The mission of #TynkerChat: Are we adequately preparing students for an unknown future? Can we, through community and sharing, make this unknown “known?” Let us lift up the conversation about making sure that when our students enter the workforce- they have the skills to thrive.
#TynkerChat will be held every Monday, starting March 13th.
We'll be using the typical Q & A format! Join the conversation! First question in 2 min! This week's topic: Are we doing personalized learning right? Follow along on our @participate page here: https://t.co/JZuKChEIBf#Tynkerchat
A1: I think the problem is that it has not been well defined. Some view it similar to an IEP for each student. I have been looking into it and it allows students to learn at their zone of proximal development.#tynkerchat
A2: when students are allowed to forge their own path they are more likely to succeed. As teachers we need to get out of the way. Our inexperience with #STEM makes us have to try new things and no longer be the expert. That makes #personalizedlearning possible. #Tynkerchat
A2: Ss are working on individual projects or collaborating with a partner. STEAM/coding doesn’t lend itself to whole class learning, unless that is in the Ts plan. #tynkerchat
Q3: I've heard horror stories of #personalizedlearning with teachers thinking that they should be creating custom curriculum for all of their students. What's working/not working in this scenario? #Tynkerchat
A2: In STEAM- there is often not one right answer or path to the finish line. If we're embracing the #makered mindset- then there's a lot of paths to success. #Tynkerchat
A2: #personalizedlearning works with STEM/STEAM so well because students have multiple ways of tackling a problem. There is freedom and room to think and they can create and make to come up with viable solutions. #TynkerChat
A3: Teachers will quickly burn out if they try to customize curriculum for each student. I think showing possible paths for their learning is more reasonable. If we are going to empower the students then they need to have high stakes it their learning. #tynkerchat
Q4 Final Question for #TynkerChat tonight: How do we allow for multiple paths and multiple solutions to be ingrained in our learning? What are the best tools for managing a #personalizedlearning path?
#Tynkerchat
A3: all students should have the same final objective and the students should be the ones to determine how the objective is met. More student focus and not so much teacher driven. If the T does the plans it is not #personalizedlearning. #Tynkerchat
A1: It means giving students choice in how they want to demonstrated what they have learned. Also to me means that we can provide, as Ts a more tailored learning experience for each student. #tynkerchat
We need to educate the public because "it wasn't done like that when I was in school" and we get pushback from legislators, parents and sometime the students as well because of what they are hearing from people outside of the classroom. #tynkerchat
A2: It goes well because you have many diff. ability levels and many diff. options/choices in showing learning. For #steam classrooms it can be using variety of tools & platforms for design and coding #tynkerchat
A4: Ss need to be exposed to a variety of tools so they can begin to figure out what works best for them. Is it digital learning, designing and creating, creative writing, etc. #TynkerChat#personalizedlearning
