#BadgeChatK12 Archive
#BadgeChatK12 was founded in December, 2014 by a group of educators who are passionate about credentialing learning and achieving. While there are thousands of us around the globe issuing badges to learners, there was not yet a regular twitter chat for those of us in the K-12 space to gather for learning and sharing about badging. After reaching out to leaders in the field (like the good folks at Mozilla and The Badge Alliance) for their thoughts, #BadgeChatK12 was born.

Tom from So Cal HS Spanish teacher moving forward on first time w/baddges fif next year.
I'm Noah in Denver! Working with Aurora Public Schools on badging 21st Cent Skills for ss.
I work with teachers/schools as they integrate technology. Have little experience with badges, and want to learn more
Good afternoon ! We are a Santa Barbara, CA based team providing edtech PD opportunities w/ digital badges to educators.
Great to have you with us this week Jen!
Yah!! So glad you're joining us April!
Rich from Santa Barbara. I use open badges with edtech teacher pd
Ben in Santa Cruz, CA representing - Glad to be back at
Excited to get going...last week we got waaaay in the weeds on endorsements https://t.co/yVkvx53jnY
This week, Workflow
Great to see you back! Been missing you!
Good evening Mary Bus Ed T from CT looking into using for badging platform and figuring out best-practices
Q1: Who are the different stakeholders that have Digital Badge workflow challenges?
Sue in LA working with Just lurking and learning from
Nice! Hope this community is helpful for you!
I miss every time I can't make it.
A1 The greatest challenge lies with administrators trying to green light badges w/out training.
May I suggest the Tonai Method? she has some very creative ways to pull this off
A1 Please say what you mean by "workflow challenges"...
yes, any tips/resources are appreciated, thank you!
A1: At the district level some folks are just starting to imagine what a badges workflow would look like.
A1 Teachers hope admin will rely on our expertise to implement and monitor and hope they will let us train them next,
Thanks for asking! Workflow = process challenges, time wasters, busy work + more
Good afternoon ! Glad to pop in for a few minutes to chat!
A1: Ditto, are we focused on the workflow of issuing ? https://t.co/MsLgkN0UqO
A1 Please say what you mean by "workflow challenges"...
A1: Teachers! Time is precious and difficult workflow can be the difference btwn sticking with it and bailing early
Awesome to have you here at and glad you caught at Excited 2 learn more about
A1 I'll try: badge creation not aligned to shared standards, badge assessment doesn't scale, badge consumers not in the loop
Could be issuing. Also could be for earners, validators, consumers, etc
A1: By starting with a collab. process with IT, district and site admin, we do not feel constrained by workflow challenges
A1: For Ts making time to learn and post evidence. For my Ss, remembering their login info...
Sounds like a similar problem that can be had with online courses.
Great point! Just having a new login can be a workflow challenge with ss!
We encounter the scaling issue quite a bit.
That's where I am; an online high school
A1: Getting all the moving parts to work together (platform, badge issuer, notifications, evaluation, etc.)
OK, now that we've thought about WHO may be impacted on workflow, let's move to the actual challenges...
Q2: What are some of the workflow challenges w Digital Badges? Please share examples!
A1: We have struggled with the follow-through of earners checking and sharing badges.
Good afternoon, Kari Milton here, glad I can join for a bit.
Glad you mentioned that (I was about to ask). I remember that being a big lesson learned...any new insights?
Do you mean "checking" on whether they have met criteria and "sharing" their evidence back out?
hi Kari! I heard great things about your session!
collaboration, change in ~ herding cats
Can you say more about that? Is a risk that things fall through the cracks?
A1 We're about to launch bulk awarding features on to make the badge issuing workflow faster for awarders.
Q2 Motivating students do the work without extra credit? Do we make it extra work or ad part of nirmal wirk?
Our new insights are around the power of badging for all -- Ts, Ss, community. The more we badge, it's understood
badges might mean one more thing in five more places for and admins to worry about, need integration
Good to know! The bulk issue is mos def a workflow constraint when mult ss deserve same Badge
I'm trying to figure out a way to easily do workflow for my Ss an Ts using , maybe modifying method for us
yes please!! And perhaps a leaderboard option someday?
Excellent on bulk awarding feature! We automate through our for efficiency. It's how we scale up
A2: I think systems that put all the work on Ts (create Badge, attach evidence, issue) is a huge challenge
A2: One thing is the compatibility/ease of use with our current LMS, and allowing for the badges to be transferable.
Are you able to show us the badges you issue for ? Is just a login portal, yeah?
Interested in the badging in community... https://t.co/R7qxct4CVg
Our new insights are around the power of badging for all -- Ts, Ss, community. The more we badge, it's understood
April - could you describe that for those who are facing the barrier of scaling?
Yes! Compatibility with LMS/SIS can be a challenge (as well as HOW to make compatible...csv vs api)
Yeah the leaderboard features for are in the pipe + a bunch of security features we're prioritizing
Actually, since we automate the issuing of the , Ss don't always visit it to see/share it.
This is one of the concerns we have - creating more work for Ts, would most be willing to do? https://t.co/LK0p2ZSAFf
A2: I think systems that put all the work on Ts (create Badge, attach evidence, issue) is a huge challenge
Thx for sharing that! It's a touch design constraint: scale to batch issuing AND have earners care
What kinds of activities are you issuing badges for?
Thanks for that catch - I'll see if we can get that shared:)
Many platforms now offer a variation of claim codes so earner can own attaching evidence, apply for Badge
I would love to know which systems provide best pathways for integration.
What is your LMS? https://t.co/8FSU4y8I8H
A2: One thing is the compatibility/ease of use with our current LMS, and allowing for the badges to be transferable.
Not to mention scaling can present issues around validity and rigor.
We're exploring a "county of learning" model sim to the cities of lrng promoted by
That is an important consideration. Do you have any ideas on solving that challenge?
I believe that if it is worthwhile work, there will be buy in. I find it incredibly worthwhile in my own practice.
BAM! We want all deserving to be credentialed AND want to avoid participation trophies
Schoology. You might know it offers badges, but those end up being more like stickers.
Our database admin automates an export from to issue badges in our platform from
Awesome! fyi is releasing "Global Playlists" this Summer that will be accessible to all
Had another question but we're running out of time so a quick final question 3 coming up...
Q3: What are your takeaways from this week's chat?
We started with our college & career readiness indicators and grew based on S interest and school priorities
We've just started learning about it, so not yet. If you have some ideas I'd love to hear them.
Stickers = internal, not portable?
A3: workflow/process seems to be a work in progress for many; depending on resources available to them
A3. Just getting started thinking about badging w/in a K-12 setting and learning what the challenges are. Thanks for sharing!
A3 The word "workflow" covers a lot of things!
That I now have more questions I haven't thought if before now and need to get answers.
Cool! So these badges are issued automatically by your system for things that students are already doing?
Welcome ! I'm also new to .
Cool! Could you estimate what % of districts use google accounts for students?
Yes, and in many cases, they were being recognized. We have pathways specifically to motive Ss to continue
A3: I've got a few resources to explore. Thanks for facilitating!
Neat. Does the system show evidence of what the student actually did to earn the badge? How would I find that out?
Yes, and that don't have much meaning beyond the classroom or moment.
Not too much effort. Each school has a ambassador. We share the load
thanks everyone - that time flew by quickly
Thank you everyone for the resources to start badging, hope to check in next week!
Agreed The real long term value of badges is that they show evidence of learning
Seriously. I don't think a half hour has ever passed so quickly in my life
yes, signing on w Google will make it so much easier!
Badges are both for reward and recognition. But students don't play video games for badges.
this will solve kids not having email issue for many(some districts turn off gmail)
They play for the enjoyment of the game, we need to consider this when planning to use badges in the classroom.
Many companies like have kids use Google accounts for sign up
Formative is OK. Do you need portability? What about retrospective formative value - and conversion to portable
I've done lots w actually though is good too!
