#sschat A1 They are part of our representative democracy and each vote counts. Teach Ss how to focus on the issues to become an informed citizen when going to vote. If you don’t vote, don’t complain!
#sschat A1 When I️ taught US Government, I️ made it a requirement to attend one school board or town council meeting to watch elected officials in action.
A2 One thing I did last year was a group project after we finished studying the protest culture of the 60's and early 70's. I had the students design a protest of a current day issue #sschat
I teach in Oklahoma school budgets seem to be cut by the hour anymore, if not the minute....lol (I laugh to keep from crying) #sschat
But in all seriousness this has been a great issue to get them engaged at a more local level and not just federal.
the students could either make a video, a poster, a song, a piece of art, write an essay, write an editorial, or make a skit. They also had to create a hashtag for their issue, and sample social media posts. #sschat

#sschat A3 Today, we were fortunate to have a dialogue with a class from Monterrey, Mexico. Our Ss voiced there opinions on issues from gun control to immigration. Not everyone agreed but shared their views. Working to build that voice!
A3 I am pretty open with my views (which are not the mainline political views for Oklahoma). I have seen this give the students confidence to speak up and share their opinion. It is empowering them to not shy away from the political process. #sschat

#sschat A4 Inviting experts to share their views. Last year, Senator Donnelly spoke to our Ss. Today, we had @vicpasquantonio share her role as a reporter. Also, my colleague @1988project is working with his Ss on a bill regarding President Garfield memorial.
#sschat A6 Yes. Used to show it in class because I️ doubted the watched it. We focused on the agenda of the President but also reminded Ss it takes the other 2 branches to make it a reality.
A6 For my WH Ss this year I plan on making an XCRedit opp around the SOTU address. It will be based on foreign policy & what we are studying at that time. They will need to explain how the history of the country affects Trumps view towards them. #sschat

#sschat A6 in the media, it all depends on the commentator and their thoughts on the speech. With all the media outlets today, it is difficult to react to all commentary.
