-

-
-
-
-
A1: responsible connections
-
-
-
-
-
-
Genise, Administrator in Birmingham. Hello all!
-

Digit Citizenship = Understanding Impact...
-

A1: Digit Citizenship = Understanding Impact...
-
Welcome Genise! How's the weather there??
-
-
HI Maria! I'm happy to join the conversation and learn from all of you. 😊
-
-
-
Q1: How do you define Digital Citizenship in two words?
-
Totally agree! Our digital actions leave footprints and an impact
-
Understanding impact of our decisions can be complicated!
-
Two words is not enough but worth considering!
-
-
-
Teaching MS, students do not always get the lasting impact they are making...
-
Hi, sorry to miss great topic! ,discussd in book study last nt
-
I think it's a great way synthesize things you know about it!
-
even more so when we don't see immediate consequences
-
-
-
and even as adults, our actions can have lasting impacts on each other!
-
GREAT Point. Impact may come years later.
-
-
I first said, "Responsibly connected." However, I love 's comment, "Understanding impact."
-
Definitely. Students must understand the impact of their digital decisions.
-
Would probably just say THINK!!!!!
-
-
-
Q2 is up! "Should digital citizenship only apply to students?"
-
A2: should apply adults = role models = teachers = trend setters! Kids will mirror our actions!
-
A2: We ALL have to be accountable. As Ts we should not put things out there that we would be afraid of Ss finding.
-
A2: Absolutely NOT! No, no, no!
-
-
We can comm across time/space; we have global audiences &the perfect pulpit to preach from - our lessons should be positive
-
A2 should apply to anyone & everyone in all professions. Especially critical for admins & Ts to model
-
What do teachers need to consider as digital citizens?
-
-
A2: stated "If you want to see how you act online, watch your Ss or kids!" It becomes real!
-
Interesting! Ideas for modeling ?
-
A2: can't say it loud enough - EVERYBODY needs to be good digital citizens
-
A2: No! Guide by example!
-
Ts need to consider EVERY ASPECT of being a digital citizenship. Actions speak louder than words.
-
A2 Applies to all, Ss, Ts, everyone accountable, resp use, we all need to model approp use :)
-
What are some things teachers can still work on learning about ?
-
Everything! We need to make sure we are modeling what we would expect from everyone else.
-
A2: Everyone who engages in technology use should be aware and adhere to appropriate digital communication and etiquette.
-
A2: We model behavior in real life, we must do that online as well
-
-
Love this! https://t.co/lbwo4qydI6
-
-
A2: should apply adults = role models = teachers = trend setters! Kids will mirror our actions!
-
Facebook posts. Word usage online. Images posted online. Privacy of personal life.
-
A2: adults should be responsible - should teach/model appropriate use
-
Completely agree! https://t.co/MztzBpOFa0
-
-
A2: should apply adults = role models = teachers = trend setters! Kids will mirror our actions!
-
Hi :) I will mostly be out tonight, but trying to follow and chime in some!
-
ideas for modeling digital citizenship?
-
It is just sad that the people with the most online following are often those with the worst .
-
A must. We all have our digital footprints on display.
-
Quite a critical issue is it not? Sends a poor message to students! Do bad and get attention.
-
A2: I've seen class accounts on twitter! Seem like great ways to understand it as communities that have rules of ettiquite
-
-
every adult should do the Google power search course
-
have to keep reminding myself of this when we do projects in school; easier to say "no, don't need to cite"
-
Teachers need to be held accountable to what they put out on social media. My philosophy: Would my dad like/appreciate it?
-
Citing the sources we use; watching how/what we use/post; using digital platforms for good etc. https://t.co/FbbuVJN9J8
-
-
ideas for modeling digital citizenship?
-
-
A3: we have to be. Who knows what will go viral...good or bad behavior.
-
It's different for our Ss to ask that same question though. Our parents have different thoughts often times than we do.
-
A3: The actions of one teacher can change the reputation of a district in an instant! Negative PR is lethal for everyone!
-
Definitely a critical issue. We are expected 2 communicate norms 2 Ss. Must model responsible behaviors
-
And positive PR can really make a community/school look incredible.
-
A3: same rules should apply no matter where we are and when
-
A3: I am seeing younger Ts not consider such things. Is this the case everywhere?
-
A3: I think so if it makes directly affects the employer.
-
A3 As members of organizations charged with cultivating competent, productive & empathic citizens...? Uh, yes!
-
so true - bad news/behavior is always broadcast loud and clear
-
Especially since some of the Ps that my students have are younger than me. I tell my Ss, "Would grandma approve?"
-
A3: I always kept my personal life private online!
-
A3: Ts must understand the impact our actions do to a community. We're in a public position, fair or not, have to be mindfull.
-
-
And also privacy with certain matters!
-
A3: Ts must understand the impact our actions do to a community. We're in a public position, fair or not, have to be mindful.
-
Whenever posting online as a teacher and relating to education, I thought about "How will this impact my school, staff, Ss?
-
A3: Sometimes we have no idea what Ss are looking up to us.
-
I loveYoung Ts but I wonder if colleges prep them to understand what Social Media does other than share things
-
I keep my circle very small on social media that is personal.
-
A3: Yes to an extent. If we are tagged on something that appears on our pages, no. If we post it, yes.
-
A3: Accountability is essential. Digital
etiquette rules apply to Ts also. Must communicate with regard for integrity.
-
Definitely! It's part of the profession!
-
-
How much social media etiquette is taught to Ts in college?
-
We are responsible to many people as Teachers posting on social media! https://t.co/KvzKvnKjaf
-
-
Whenever posting online as a teacher and relating to education, I thought about "How will this impact my school, staff, Ss?
-
Good point, Laura. Can't be responsible for other people's posts.
-
Not enough but is really stepping it up with the EdTech class now.
-
-
A3: Thoughts and pics posted online help paint a picture for others. Be careful of the pic you are painting. We are models.
-
I do know tries to teach her preservice Ss proper social media etiquette.
-
Integrity, great word! Represent yourself & your opinions but do so in a way that respects the opinions of others
-
A4: We all get excited at the novelty of starting. We have to understand that Ss feel that same novelty.
-
A4: So, I LOVE the middle. Episode Jan 6th. I laughed so hard! For copyright, we edited that text a bit.
-
AWESOME point !! novelty causes excitement and sometimes blinds judgement?
-
A4: I have no clue what that even means, so, maybe a feeling of confusion. What's that even mean?
-
Agree Maria! As little as one tweet is so easily sent, but the impact can stick forever
-
People from impressions with their eyes first. It can be hard to change that!
-
Congrats for focusing on Netiquette with Social Media! Bravo!
-
-
In the episode, dad gets a Twitter set up and has no idea how to correctly use it.
-
-
A4: it makes me giggle a little and think of the 80 year old lady next door that got a new tablet for Christmas!
-
Mike Heck just started on Twitter. He used Twittered rather than Tweeted. Hilarious! :)
-
Yes, sounds like engaging in effective communication skills.
-
I feel excited for this person -
-
It took me a while to think through. He's experiencing surprise at how quickly he's become a user once joining Twitter
-
-
A4: We have to realize there's a teaching opportunity, right?
-
A4: This also makes me think. Do we need proper action terminology or just the proper action?
-
No TV for me, just Twitter chats
-
Love the positivity! Social media can be great for self expression and connecting with others!
-
At least that's the way I interpret it!
-
-
IMHO Language provides clarity but shouldn't be like a vice-grip
-
I don't even know what the middle is. So, that is my issue I think. So, stay naive and it doesn't matter, right?
-
"With great power comes great responsibility"-Uncle Ben, Spiderman
-
A4: The user is learning and is impressed with his ability to engage.
-
In no time - he'll be tweeting
-
Me too! Isn't there something important on tonight? Our TV is never on.
-
-
I still get excited and impressed with myself sometimes when I "twitter" something!
-
Any conversation that prompts Spiderman quotes is a good thing!
-
Tweet of the night from David right here!
-
A5 *palm to forehead*? :)
-
Let's start a movement replace tweet with twitter! :-) Tweeted = Twittered
-
-
A5: This is a tough situation!
-
Heck, I was surprised. I joined twitter and right away I had 5 followers that I had no idea who they were. LOL.
-
A5 Reach out to T immediately but privately & - from a place of care & concern - tactfully share your thinking
-
-
A5: going to have to ask them what's up, can be awkward
-
-
A5 shake my head, have seen this often, sometimes awkwd to address, but use a "hint" of some sort to guide them
-
A5: let them know! delve into the impact it can have. if you know them, it's definitely easier
-
I saw this over holiday break and just really did not know what to do. I felt stuck!
-
-
what did you end up doing in the end?
-
key thing you wrote, go to them privately
-
A5: This actually happened (w/friend). I said something about being careful. Was told to mind my own business.
-
-
Agree, despite your own feelings, they will only change if they learn!
-
Honestly, I have yet to bring it up. Sensitive individual. Fear of causing waves bigger than I can surf.
-
A5: Chat time with T. Discuss responsibility 2 adhering 2 ethical behavior, discuss footprint Question T, discuss rectifying
-
A5: I would send a PM and let them know it may be seen by people not intended for, and ask if they're ready to defend it.
-
A5: Proceed with caution - point out how it may be perceived & the potential repercussions
-
-
But at least you tried...and the consequences won't be weighing on you.
-
A5: Lived this w/ a new T. I offered my opinion, she considered and removed it, and we built a great friendship.
-
-
That is all you can do. Make the effort and let it lay as it will.
-
that's the best when you truly are only trying to help grrrr.....
-
I did. It didn't stop the individual AND he still does. SMH.
-
-
-
I dropped it. Not my problem. He is a younger/newer teacher.
-
Throwing this out there, what if you are that teacher's administrator, have to do anything different?
-
I cannot understd how some post pics/status during school and selfies, etc. abt Ss.
-
FB during school is a tough issue. I Tweet but it is part of my job. :)
-
If it falls into anyone's lap most, it would def be administrator's situation.
-
Good quesiton ! I think it would be wise to offer wisdom as Admin before Super gets to it!
-
A5: When it is a peer, it is so much easier when you have a good relationship. I have also ignored out of fear of reaction.
-
-
All comes down to knowing approp uses/etc. Some miss the lessons on this
-
Same here. I tweet only when I am not responsible for Ss.
-
Great question. Wouldn't that admin be obligated to?
-
-
Excited to see back in ny on Thursday! Looking forward to a fun day
-
Could require written documentation.
-
-
-
Depends on the admin. Some I would say something to, other's I would not. I would hope an admin knows better.
-
that's what I was thinking; I am very much a gray-matter type of person, if I was Admin not sure what I'd do
-
Agree..."Digital citizenship" is really just citizenship.
-
-
A6: I address this at the beginning of the school year, and let them (and parents) know it won't happen.
-
A6: Ss must graduate to be my FB friend. Church Youth Group kids can friend me but I monitor behavior and often unfriend
-
Are you talking if an admin does something inappropriate or if an admin sees something being done?
-
A6: Only if it is dedicated to school use. i.e. my youtube channel that is for school.
-
I'm not even friends with former students! Though work email works!
-
A6: no way, no how. You can't take that risk.
-
A6: Ss can follow me on Twitter, I use it strictly for ed and don't follow them. FB I don't friend until after graduation.
-
Admin has a responsibility to respond.
-
A6: Even those who have graduated, undergo some serious scrutiny! I think I only have 8 former students right now/
-
A6: I do address. No followers (when I have control over it) until the Ss graduate. I don't do instagram or snap-chat.
-
A6: upfront with everyone, I tell Ss when you graduate HS, then send me the request and even then, maybe
-
Most have forgotten their 8th grade math T by then! :)
-
For sure! "Even then, maybe..."
-
I read the question as the admin did something inappropriate. Would T say something to admin.
-
They don't forget their music or tech teacher! :-)
-
makes this a big point...he looks over profiles before following.
-
No one ever forgets their math teacher do they? Middle School math is the best!
-
-
I was thinking teacher - if Admin, a whole other issue!
-
A6 Kidlets knew their friend request was getting declined but if they want to follow nerdy teacher tweets, party on
-
-
Would depend upon the school climate, trust factor and the level of collaboration.
-
When my son was in HS, all of his friends wanted to be my friend on FB. He would tell them they have to wait.
-
-
A7: if you're not prepared to explain it to admin, parents and students, don't post it.
-
