Welcome back, Brian! Thanks for the shoutout, earlier.
Good evening,
I'm Lee, a coordinator of instructional technology and teacher from NY.
Happy encouraged me to join this chat! I can't resist a good debate
Welcome back, Lee! Thanks so much for being here.
You got it Larry, I hope things are going well!
Hey, Larry! I’m psyched to be here.
Jacqueline, northern NJ Social Studies teacher, joining the chat!
I'm looking forward to a healthy debate. It'll help me deal with tomorrow night.
YAY, Jacqueline! Thanks for joining in, my friend.
Christy here. Tech coach from NJ. First time here, might just be a lurker. ;)
A1 G (whatever they are calling themselves now) for the KO. Free and plays well with others.
A1: Google for sure. I'm a Drive, Chromebook, Project Fi, Nexus (soon to be Pixel) user
A1: I prefer over Microsoft
A1: Loved Microsoft Office until I had to actually pay for it myself, so I'm gonna have to say Google
A1: Can I go with an apple/google combo? I love apple devices but cannot imagine teaching without
A1: I love my 1:1 iPads, but cannot live without my Google apps! I’m pretty sure I can access my Google Drive from a toaster.
A1: Google ftw (saw & had to jump in)
A1: I'm always somewhere between Google & Apple. Both are a part of my personal and professional lives.
Welcome, Christy! Feel free to lurk or chime in whenever you feel the urge :)
ease of use. Efficient and effective.
A1 little late 2the party. I like all three depending on what I'm doing & what I'm expected to do for my job! Hi
A1: I think Google takes the win here for its collaborative features. Hard to find better and free options
A1: love my Apple products, but Google is awesome! Makes work life so easy.
A1:
Google all the way!! Awesome web-based apps that are device agnostic and FREE!!
A1. Google will likely overtake apple. History repeats itself. Apple's innovation loses steam, prices itself out of market
A1: Apple devices hold up well in the classroom against little hands though, props for that and the test of time
I agree! Love Google Drive & am a new user to Google Classroom which I love.
I am totally on board with you. An Apple/Google combo.
A1: Google phones still have headphone jack!
A1: I've struggled with the creation piece in Google w/ Chromebooks. Feel like it is easier to create on iPad
A1: Google makes life/work, well, easy! So robust! However, I am typing on an Apple product...I think I need both
Can't wait for my Galaxy to die so I can buy a Pixel. {{fingers crossed}} https://t.co/VmspZuNF6S
A1: Google for sure. I'm a Drive, Chromebook, Project Fi, Nexus (soon to be Pixel) user
A1: I have a class set of Google Chromebooks, which often give us trouble, but I'm thankful for the tech & love using Drive.
A1: I forgot to mention the ease of COLLABORATION Google Apps (G Suite) Provide. LOVE this feature!!
work supplies a lovely MacBook but I'm working from a teeny Chromebook at home & couldn't be happier
My district uses iPads for younger grades and then moves to Chromebooks for older
Thanks for jumping in, my pal!
. I played around with Google Classroom before county got - Glad drive works w/Canvas so well
Project Fi in the house!! https://t.co/Mz3oDl9hhd
Can't wait for my Galaxy to die so I can buy a Pixel. {{fingers crossed}} https://t.co/VmspZuNF6S
A1: Google for sure. I'm a Drive, Chromebook, Project Fi, Nexus (soon to be Pixel) user
...how could I forget FREE?! It amazes me everyday that we don't have to pay for Google.
Our next question will begin in just 1 minute.
I agree. It's hard to find better creation apps than iMovie and Garageband. https://t.co/MHLKOrJJCV
A1: I've struggled with the creation piece in Google w/ Chromebooks. Feel like it is easier to create on iPad
Teresa from NY. Jumping in for a few....
My motto: If it's free, it's for me!
SO TRUE! https://t.co/bl9nq56g83
...how could I forget FREE?! It amazes me everyday that we don't have to pay for Google.
Honored to have you join us, Teresa! Thanks again!
A2: Both? For different reasons. Like the 1:1 Chromebooks, but like them having phones as well.
sure you're not a librarian? We seem to love free, too (if it's worth the time investment)
A2: Love county embracing BYOD policy but I think 1-to-1 would solve serious equity issues
A2: BYOD! Make use of the resources at your disposal, no need to reinvent the really expensive wheel
A2: Only experience is 1:1...I would imagine, consistency has to factor here, but I am curious to hear the debate...
A2: While I definitely agree with the BYOD philosophy, I believe it may create an opportunity for unequal access.
A2: 1:1 if your district has the resources to supply it. But not all activities require 1:1; choose wisely.
A2: Can I say both? Would love an opt-in 1:1 program- BYOD if you choose, or supplied device if you prefer
A2 We have BYOD at our board but we also have chrome books and iPads that are available for sign out.
A2:
If money isn't a factor, then 1:1 is the way to go! However, I totally understand why districts would choose BYOD.
A2: I like both. We have Chromebooks, but I encourage Ss to bring phones and personal laptops/ iPads to class.
A2: I'm in full support of 1:1, but the reality is that we often can't afford it. Sooo i'm BYOD
I wonder what the ratio would be in this scenario. I guess it might depend a lot on demographics. https://t.co/nUIxaNbwx0
A2: Can I say both? Would love an opt-in 1:1 program- BYOD if you choose, or supplied device if you prefer
A2: we're 1:1 but I think it's imperative that Ss kno how to use the tool they carry in their pocket or purse
Definitely one of the better arguments for BYOD. 1:1 can definitely be cost prohibitive. https://t.co/xebrVqiIsp
A2: I'm in full support of 1:1, but the reality is that we often can't afford it. Sooo i'm BYOD
A1: Google or Apple.... love them both!
A2: 1:1 allow options to be given for Ss w/o having to worry about Ss being left out/unable to explore options with
A2: 1:1, but when thinking about incorporating VR headsets, it would be great for students to have their phones.
A2- I prefer BYOD-we don't have it, we have 1:1, but I like the ownership that comes with the BYOD option
A2: Was working with Ss who had access to a cart of Chromebooks. Gave S option of phones or CBs, S chose right tool for them
Love the concept of choice here! https://t.co/Q0KBztWBcU
A2: Was working with Ss who had access to a cart of Chromebooks. Gave S option of phones or CBs, S chose right tool for them
A2 It's a draw. I don't care too much how we get to 1:1, but cell phones DO NOT count. Equity issue.
Our next Q is coming up in 1 minute.
if they've invested their $$ in it, they should know what it's capable of beyond social applications
Was just reading how Ts need to harness this power, Ss don't always know how to use tech for edu
Good point! What would you think of a 1:1 program with a purchase option? https://t.co/SqxNaPIr3W
A2- I prefer BYOD-we don't have it, we have 1:1, but I like the ownership that comes with the BYOD option
VR headsets are expensive but awesome potential. It is tough to purchase 1:1 and a class set of VR headsets.
Agreed much would depend on demographics
A3: Student choice whenever possible! Sometimes it's easier to streamline things so it probably depends on the assignment.
A3- Student choice whenever possible, but has to be accessible by the T
A3: All about S choice. Beginning of the yr I try to teach into a lot of tools, so Ss know options and can choose wisely
A3: Choice increases engagement & encourages critical problem solving. Differentiation is for more than testing accomodations
A3: Student choice & voice always trumps cookie cutter options for the entire class.
Good method! What are some go-to tools for you? https://t.co/MvFBU6zX2w
A3: All about S choice. Beginning of the yr I try to teach into a lot of tools, so Ss know options and can choose wisely
A3 My concern is access 3 app/tool(assuming its tech), need to ensure that ALL students have access to resources 2 show work
A3: If the project is assessing the skill, and not the tool (as it should be), you don't need to limit the options
Mic dropped. https://t.co/RWrBA8JZcT
A3: Choice increases engagement & encourages critical problem solving. Differentiation is for more than testing accomodations
A3: BOTH! Plan the project and give them options of how to present it in a choice board, then into
A3: choice in end product
Great point here! https://t.co/TpyvJqEvHj
A3: If the project is assessing the skill, and not the tool (as it should be), you don't need to limit the options
Oops , meant access 2 app not (3) https://t.co/S83mbiO40I
A3 My concern is access 3 app/tool(assuming its tech), need to ensure that ALL students have access to resources 2 show work
Would love to hear your favorites! https://t.co/93Fqkv4jgH
A3: All about S choice. Beginning of the yr I try to teach into a lot of tools, so Ss know options and can choose wisely
A3: depends on the assignment, but I'm all about student choice for an end project.
Agreed! VR headsets rock! showed me a demo on them! https://t.co/6d16agkAvN
true story. It would be great to even have just 5 or 6, so students could share. The experience is just amazing!
Agreed. The tool should only be a medium not what is assessed. https://t.co/0woeQicdbE
A3: If the project is assessing the skill, and not the tool (as it should be), you don't need to limit the options
Welcome, Maggy! Thanks so much for joining us during our Great debate!
not enough hrs in the day to investigate evrythng & if Ss learn on own, that time should be honored
Google Suite (esp Drawings), , screencastify,
Our next question will begin in 1 minute.
So true. Goes back to thinking critically on exactly WHAT we are assessing. Great stuff! https://t.co/2IWKnWXMds
Agreed. The tool should only be a medium not what is assessed. https://t.co/0woeQicdbE
A3: If the project is assessing the skill, and not the tool (as it should be), you don't need to limit the options
A3 Depends if I need specific platform or need to keep the afective filter low. 2nd semester is CYOA once we have some tools
Realized I never intro-ed myself- Cassie- AT and Behavior Specialist
, , Luke Harper , , Kluber , Bray Wyatt , , ,
A4: Student exploration and mistakes all the way! How else will they be prepared when they have to do this independently?
Yes! I love learning from the students!
a3.When students have a choice they are invested & when they are invested they will go for it versus just giving the minimum
A3 in the end choice, focus on content & demonstration of understanding, not how "pretty" end product is, can be deceiving
And I never said, "Welcome!" Thanks for joining us tonight, Cassie!
In addition - school will block truly inappropriate and unsafe sites, right? https://t.co/wLuAuGKW9I
A4: Student exploration and mistakes all the way! How else will they be prepared when they have to do this independently?
absolutely - bust out the , I have some real artists at my school
A4: exploration and mistakes at middle school level
Q4- depends on the students you are working with- for most students-explore on their own... some students need guidance
Awesome point, Jon! Thanks so much for joining us, ! https://t.co/6z9DTD8HpO
a3.When students have a choice they are invested & when they are invested they will go for it versus just giving the minimum
A4: Exploration & mistakes make for meaningful learning. We also need to teach digital citizenship & media literacy.
a4.The future is about curating not mindlessly complying. If want students to become trustworthy we must start trusting them
My Ss LOVE the sharpies.......
A4: ooh, good question - student age/experience/maturity = gradual release of prescreened sites https://t.co/HeCDCwXlU9
A4: So agree with this. Real world is not pre-approved and extreme filtering. Teach into https://t.co/jSV4yUkvmk
A4: Student exploration and mistakes all the way! How else will they be prepared when they have to do this independently?
WOW! Speechless. https://t.co/VVHvBtw9Vc
a4.The future is about curating not mindlessly complying. If want students to become trustworthy we must start trusting them
A4 It all depends, truly believe Ss should be taught how 2use Google etc, as its a text form & different skill is needed 1/2
Ummm! I need this printed and hanged ASAP! https://t.co/exIGfrDejV
a4.The future is about curating not mindlessly complying. If want students to become trustworthy we must start trusting them
A4: somewhere in between. Pros and cons on both sides. Hate to see kids blocked from using awesome apps that aren't approved
Yes yes yes! https://t.co/7D8mKSACnZ
A4: somewhere in between. Pros and cons on both sides. Hate to see kids blocked from using awesome apps that aren't approved
A4: Tear down the walls!! We all learn from our mistakes and we need to be there for our Ss to ensure their safe landings.
Couldn't agree more https://t.co/vo38yb4w3X
a4.The future is about curating not mindlessly complying. If want students to become trustworthy we must start trusting them
R4 Believe in exploring (Board blocks inapp. sites)but also having sites ready for those struggling and Ss w/ limited English
I let them explore freely, but am there to coach and guide if/when needed.
Q5- Both! Some students learn better through the mechanics of writing- some digitally- open it up
A5 Hard to ignore research of pen/paper on comprehension - but also need to teach Ss as many tools as we can
A5: This goes back to student choice for me. Who are the notes for? Ss should do what is best for THEM
A5: give student choice, whichever they prefer
is now trending in USA, ranking 43
Love this! https://t.co/Q9xZskFarN
A5: This goes back to student choice for me. Who are the notes for? Ss should do what is best for THEM
Wow, powerful question and controversial as some research states the physical act of writing helps us . I'm pencil and paper
A5: I like the opportunity to be more paperless in the classroom, but we still take paper/pencil notes too
Times are changing and we need to change with it. Offer students a choice of how THEY learn best.
A5: I tend to fall in the middle of this issue; however, in general, I think we could adopt more digital text strategies.
A5: Thought it over some more. Digital notes if they're showing me, paper notes if it's for reference for later.
A5: This! Yes! https://t.co/piusLtgmP9
A5: This goes back to student choice for me. Who are the notes for? Ss should do what is best for THEM
A4: exploring doesn't always yield the "good stuff" - like to suggest & other hidden gems, even Ts may have missed
Sometimes I recommend students take a picture of their paper notes. Helps keep things organized.
A5 Ss need to find what works best for them, many Ss need use of tech for fine-motor issues, etc
Our FINAL QUESTION of the evening is coming up in 1 minute!
Agreed! Helpful to point out to Ss learning theory and why they are making certain choices
A5: digital for S,but I'm pencil/paper first.I process info better that way (some S might too). Is choice allowable here?
Sending positive vibes to our for
A5 I will also add some struggling Ss that never work with paper/pencil immediately take to the digital with new confidence
I always let them take pics of my anchor charts. It's what I do at conferences, why not?
Q6: FINAL QUESTION - Technology taught by experts vs technology integrated across curriculum. https://t.co/8z9CCwqvIO
Always room for choice! https://t.co/jDzy6Yk67l
A5: digital for S,but I'm pencil/paper first.I process info better that way (some S might too). Is choice allowable here?
Many of them are reading digital texts now.
Thanks for your support and positive vibes ! You always put a smile on my face :D
also pics of charts, anchor charts, criteria, etc. Great tool for this
A7: integraed cross curriuclum, we learn together
A6 Feel like I'm cheating by always saying "both" - Ss need experts and they need gen ed teachers to be tech savvy
Q6: oh wow... both? Primarily integrated in, but occasional outside support
A5: def a "this" AND "that" situation - Ss need access to all tools in their toolbox to determine best one for job
Thanks for a fun chat!!!!
A6: Integrated! The best way to become an expert is to do!
Thanks so much for your support, Teresa! You are an !
A6: Integrated across curriculum. Skills like reading & writing apply to all subjects just like tech! Tech should be seamless
A6: Even as a former tech teacher, I believe tech should be integrated in all content areas. No more keyboarding classes!
R6. Technology integrated into curriculum = link to real life, use of technology throughout our lives
A6: I love integrating, but I REALLY need some1 else to explicitly teach them to type lol Hunt and peck holds up the process!
I believe tech should not be taught in isolation. It works best when enhancing teaching and learning. https://t.co/N95dfBcLpU
A6: Integrated across curriculum. Skills like reading & writing apply to all subjects just like tech! Tech should be seamless
oh, definitely not! But is there also a place for developing specialized skills, passion projects etc?
Agreed. Tech is not its own island, it's a part of who we are and should be that way in the classroom https://t.co/pnU0nbOx4n
I believe tech should not be taught in isolation. It works best when enhancing teaching and learning. https://t.co/N95dfBcLpU
A6: Integrated across curriculum. Skills like reading & writing apply to all subjects just like tech! Tech should be seamless
A6: Parents, please squeeze in keyboarding skills after shoe tying? lol
