Please join us for a weekly conversation about design thinking in K12 education. We will have a variety of moderators with a wide range and depth of design thinking experiences. Each week, we will connect the dots to the design thinking methodology and how it can and will play a bigger role in today’s K12 educational arena.

A1: my go-to #DesignThinking process is from @stanforddschool; it's what I was introduced to & I can make it work in a K-5 setting; I find commonalities in engineering design process we have used for past 5 yrs #DTK12chat
A1 when I started out in 2010 I utilized the @stanforddschool gold standard then I learned from @kimsaxe in how she designed her own process And then created & designed #DEEPdt The Why DEEPdt is designed for ALL designers young & old #dtk12chat
We use a modified version from Nueva School. Like the circular flow to show that it’s not a step-by-step. And we added graphics/colors to help w/K-6 Ss. #dtk12chat
A1 @WHS_StudioD uses a 5-stage process created for us by founder @incitewhite Gather, Glean, Generate, Gauge, Go... sometimes we add Get Ready at the beginning and Go Back at the end... pros: simple, alliterative... cons: appears linear but not #dtk12chat

Thanks Dan (its weird for all the years Ive done the official Powerhouse of #dtk12chat I have never done a Process chat… Look forward to the ideas and whys)
I like the circular! Our model currently lacks that aspect if you are looking at it as an outsider, but maybe a visual could mitigate that... hmmm... #dtk12chat
YES I miss @incitewhite & his DT contributions. I got to meet him in person he gave me How to Steal Like an Artist The GGGGG process & original site was awesome #dtk12chat

A1) my models for DT Process, for progression from simplicity (so students can see how they use DT for almost everything they do) thru complexity (for deeper understanding, to show how they use Quality Checks for General Design, and Reality Checks for Science-Design). #dtk12chat
I love the idea of having all the different models around the room to compare and inspire... Do y'all (#dtk12chat peeps everywhere) think that would be meaningful or confusing for students?

@GHSTEAMchic, @scitechyEDU, @stanforddschool, @kimsaxe
in one of my engineering for educators classes I had to create my own engineering design process. It really made me analyze what existed, what I liked & didn't like about each, what I thought was missing. But also had to really live it to create #DTK12chat

Hey #dtk12chat! I’m Dana and I adapt #designthinking processes and sprints for enterprise level clients. And just finished streaming Doctor Foster! Will watch anything from @BBC
A1 #dtk12chat well, as long as I start with empathy, I'm free to move around a lot, so I'd agree with @scitechyEDU and @strugbook about the focus and flare diagram...though not in a linear way
Q2 Are there areas of the process (framework) you use that your students gravitate towards more? Try to avoid? Gets overlooked? #dtk12chat Please share your Whys too.
Btw I have hard time processing tweets, staying focused on tasks & Modding at the same time so I will be revisiting this feed when its not so “LIVE” :) #dtk12chat
We spend a lot of time in define, I’d guess, because Ts can most easily connect it w/state standards. But empathy is my fave place to hang out! #dtk12chat
I also "love the idea of having different models around the room to compare and inspire." Ts can improve S's balance of "meaningful versus confusing" by helping Ss discover (by reflection + discussion) how each model can add to their understanding-of-process. #dtk12chat

The Produce aspect of #DEEPdt tends to be the wrap up party and it is too brief, surface, and then iteration loses steam… There is so much bulk in Empathize & Experiment a lot of times the fatigue factor hits as well as the time monster #dtk12chat
A2 As a student I've found that beginning design classes really focus on the brainstorming and prototyping phases, but I gravitate towards the empathy and define phases. I think that's the place where you are really able to see new opportunities for design impact #dtk12chat
Q2 Are there areas of the process (framework) you use that your students gravitate towards more? Try to avoid? Gets overlooked? #dtk12chat Please share your Whys too.
A2: I still feel so new to process & actually trying w/Ss running the show. I need to help them more w/empathy & define to make it authentic; time and schedules is my very poor excuse #dtk12chat
yes, "cycles aren’t always neat, perfect circles" so I like the analogy of DT Process being like the goal-directed improvising of a hockey skater, not the rigid choreography of a figure skater. #dtk12chat
A2 Also students in Go often finally admit to issues that have been pointed out to them all along and should have been resolved prior - that's annoying - not enough reflecting on feedback maybe? combination of lack of critical thinking/laziness/impatience to move on? #dtk12chat
I find people often want to converge too early during research. There's a need to have an answer and unwillingness to sit in the discomfort of unknowing #dtk12chat

Q3 Lets Talk #designthinking Mindsets
Which DT Mindsets seem to flow like melted butter with your students? Which DT Mindsets feel like a rusty nail? #dtk12chat (using @stanforddschool mindsets as an example YET there are others)
TBH I haven't examined the other models side-by-side in a way that would encourage me to choose - just stuck with the hand-me-downs and tackled other issues as we moved fwd with the program... #dtk12chat
Agreed; although as I lead Ss through experiences sometimes weeks apart from last one I like to have them think about where they were & where they are going; not lock step but seeing where we are headed can help #DTK12chat

Q2 Reframing tends to be problematic as well. People tend to fall in love with early ideas and struggle with letting go in the face of new insights #dtk12chat
That's so interesting cause in my college classes, the idea to prototype part tends to be much more paralyzing and difficult than the detail parts #dtk12chat
here’s mine 2. I start w/ 1 model when they are still learning the https://t.co/jWXy20C3e8 my exper, get comfortable w/1process & mindsets b4 figuring out which others 2use. Ts 2. Practice, learn, comfy w/1
& natural changes in ur process will happen . #DTK12chat#dtk12china

True! I am thinking about having our 6th graders reflect on the models and design their own. They can take it to middle school w/them and inspire change there. #dtk12chat

Lately I definitely feel that empathy is getting too easily overlooked & we're doing more #PBL than #DT but not sure if that's related to our current model, if I haven't developed my teachers well enough, if logistics or old mindsets are to blame, other? #dtk12chat
Love it! & have them realize it's a prototype; as they use it in middle school they might need to modify as they encounter more complex learning & challenges; a great portfolio idea! #dtk12chat

A3 Bias Towards Action gets a slow start due to not being comfortable w/ the fast pace & lack of a road map Plus making a mistake Yet once a couple laps of DT is under the belt it becomes the No Brainer Mindset almost a Badge of Courage #dtk12chat
We are seeing a lot of PBL masked as DT also. Is it not understanding empathy? Or trying too hard to integrate content standards? Or lack of understanding of DT? #dtk12chat
A2: As a student, I think the define part would be the most difficult to target exactly what the challenge is. However, after reading more on design thinking, empathize seems to be the most important in creating a strong foundation. #barbersclass@barbersclass#dtk12chat
Unfortunately I can’t stay. Too much to prep before next class. Look forward to reading chat later. Is @participatechat still archiving the chats? #dtk12chat#dtk12china
A3 Also, Show Don’t Tell tends to have a lot of talk… mainly to explain away the look of the prototype Its difficult to truly place the idea in front of people and walk away to let them freely digest it #dtk12chat
I think you're on to something with the standards - I have found when we plan from a standards point, rather than a community or interest point, we end up missing the empathy piece and doing #PBL - I recognize it for what it is, but once that train gets moving... #dtk12chat
One thing that helps a lot with this for me is to have our videos revolve around footage of actual users giving us feedback and using the product as well the initial needfinding. That way we show the users rather than tell a story about some made up user #dtk12chat
Totally agree. And since "design" is in the name of my program, I am def guilty of misrepresenting, though not intentionally! Trying to take us back to our original #DT roots, but teacher turnover is a bear #dtk12chat GREAT new Ts! But more PD needed and little time/$
Skidding in 10 mins from the finish line! Sorry - was at school council meeting. A3. Butter: embrace ambiguity, actually. My kids are totally good with outcome unknown! Nails: Empathy. More like - laser eye surgery. It's not painful, just needs to be meticulous. #dtk12chat
When you start with an interesting topic that's related to your content area's discipline in the world, the standards will fit themselves in. #dtk12chat
A3 Mindful of Process is smooth like butta, (especially with my amazing #D10 teachers)! Bias Toward Action needs work on all fronts, including mine #guilty#dtk12chat
in 2 graphics, we see a “symmetry” between Experiments done Mentally & Physically, to make Predictions (by mentally imagining) & Obervations (after physically actualizing) that we use in 3 Comparisons for Quality Checks and Reality Checks, https://t.co/ibZZkIXvI3#dtk12chat
A3: I can see human centered connecting well with students but can see students struggling with the culture of prototyping especially regarding the idea that “failure is good” because some students struggle with that concept. #barbersclass@barbersclass#dtk12chat
A4: struggling w/this one. Not sure how we define. But we tell Ss they have capacity to be change makers for a better society. Thinking/acting like a designer is way to do it. #dtk12chat
Q5 What comes first in “teaching” #designthinking The Process or The Mindsets? Why? Or do you do a Blender approach? How do you support the behaviors of the DT Mindsets in your classroom (sorry lots of Qs to sift through take your pick) #dtk12chat
It's one of the greatest challenges in doing the more pure forms of #designthinking in the classroom; design firms have but one task to complete: meet the client's needs; our students -- our selves -- have many more roles to fill #dtk12chat

Yes, exactly, and our district is newly re-concerned with declining test scores, implementing benchmarks/pacing guides etc which is giving even my most creative & dedicated #DT teachers major pause/anxiety about what we do #dtk12chat Need to show them HOW it can still work

@LSpencerEdD, @luckybydesign, @scitechyEDU
I also think it takes time & thoughtfulness to see those possibilities & connections + the mindset to make it work. The part of my job I am most grateful for is extra time I can take to plan #DTK12chat

yes, "multiple models lets Ss follow what speaks to them" so Ts can improvise -- based on their empathy for Ss (as individuals and in groups) -- to help them understand-and-do better, using different ways to think about process. #dtk12chat

A5 I like this question b/c it's making me realize I'm not doing what I believe. I think we ought to focus on mindsets first, but I suspect we start with process... hmmm #dtk12chat This deserves further investigation - great topic for summer changes
Q5 What comes first in “teaching” #designthinking The Process or The Mindsets? Why? Or do you do a Blender approach? How do you support the behaviors of the DT Mindsets in your classroom (sorry lots of Qs to sift through take your pick) #dtk12chat
A5: I would take the blender approach explaining the process while including the explanation of mindsets and where they fit in the process! @barbersclass#barbersclass#dtk12chat
Just wrapped up design thinking on the home front with a heartbroken 4-year-old whose favorite preschool teacher is leaving...incredible how it moves folks—even little ones—forward. Sorry to miss the #dtk12chat family this time.
Which is so so valuable! I think the most amazing thing about #designthinking is that you CAN use it to hit those curricular outcomes AND you're helping them become better humans all at once. #dtk12chat
