A1: my go-to #DesignThinking process is from @stanforddschool; it's what I was introduced to & I can make it work in a K-5 setting; I find commonalities in engineering design process we have used for past 5 yrs #DTK12chat
  • WickedDecent - Moderator Apr 25 @ 9:18 PM EDT
    Off my chat game. A1. #Deepdt. First I learned, best I know from @scitechyEDU #designthinking #dtk12chat
  • scitechyEDU - Moderator Apr 25 @ 9:18 PM EDT
A1 when I started out in 2010 I utilized the @stanforddschool gold standard then I learned from @kimsaxe in how she designed her own process And then created & designed #DEEPdt The Why DEEPdt is designed for ALL designers young & old #dtk12chat
  • LSpencerEdD Apr 25 @ 9:19 PM EDT
We use a modified version from Nueva School. Like the circular flow to show that it’s not a step-by-step. And we added graphics/colors to help w/K-6 Ss. #dtk12chat
  • AshAusp Apr 25 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A1 @WHS_StudioD uses a 5-stage process created for us by founder @incitewhite Gather, Glean, Generate, Gauge, Go... sometimes we add Get Ready at the beginning and Go Back at the end... pros: simple, alliterative... cons: appears linear but not #dtk12chat
    In reply to @scitechyEDU, @WHS_StudioD, @incitewhite

  • strugbook Apr 25 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A1 I really like the Focus and Flare process cause it allows time to be wild and crazy but also helps actually define the product #dtk12chat
  • AshAusp Apr 25 @ 9:22 PM EDT
I like the circular! Our model currently lacks that aspect if you are looking at it as an outsider, but maybe a visual could mitigate that... hmmm... #dtk12chat
    In reply to @LSpencerEdD
  • LSpencerEdD Apr 25 @ 9:22 PM EDT
I like focus and flare as well. We show similar models to our adults to explain concepts. #dtk12chat
    In reply to @strugbook
  • scitechyEDU - Moderator Apr 25 @ 9:22 PM EDT
Yes the circle I think is impactful vs straight across I had difficulty with only have 4 Modes to #DEEPdt to illustrate that cleanly #dtk12chat
    In reply to @LSpencerEdD
  • GHSTEAMchic Apr 25 @ 9:23 PM EDT
Thanks for sharing! I think I'll print all and post; good for Ss & Tt to see multiple strategies & approaches #dtk12chat

A1) my models for DT Process, for progression from simplicity (so students can see how they use DT for almost everything they do) thru complexity (for deeper understanding, to show how they use Quality Checks for General Design, and Reality Checks for Science-Design). #dtk12chat
  • AshAusp Apr 25 @ 9:24 PM EDT
I love the idea of having all the different models around the room to compare and inspire... Do y'all (#dtk12chat peeps everywhere) think that would be meaningful or confusing for students?
    In reply to @GHSTEAMchic, @scitechyEDU, @stanforddschool, @kimsaxe
  • LSpencerEdD Apr 25 @ 9:24 PM EDT
That’s a great idea…maybe students could make a new one with all these ideas, like the periodic table options. #dtk12chat
    In reply to @GHSTEAMchic, @scitechyEDU, @stanforddschool, @kimsaxe

  • GHSTEAMchic Apr 25 @ 9:26 PM EDT
in one of my engineering for educators classes I had to create my own engineering design process. It really made me analyze what existed, what I liked & didn't like about each, what I thought was missing. But also had to really live it to create #DTK12chat

    Q2 is on deck #dtk12chat
  • DTprocess Apr 25 @ 9:27 PM EDT
yes, CIRCLES --> useful ideas about process, because we solve problems by using CYCLES of creative-and-critical thinking. #dtk12chat
    In reply to @scitechyEDU, @LSpencerEdD
  • scitechyEDU - Moderator Apr 25 @ 9:28 PM EDT
Craig don’t you have a graphic or two to share? what about your writings on your site? #dtk12chat
    In reply to @DTprocess
  • LSpencerEdD Apr 25 @ 9:28 PM EDT
Yes, four does make a circle hard to build! #dtk12chat
    In reply to @scitechyEDU
  • GHSTEAMchic Apr 25 @ 9:28 PM EDT
Good question; I tend to go with more examples helps them see there isn't 1 right way; just like problems they are working on. #DTK12chat
    In reply to @AshAusp, @scitechyEDU, @stanforddschool, @kimsaxe
  • Ed_by_design Apr 25 @ 9:29 PM EDT
A1 #dtk12chat well, as long as I start with empathy, I'm free to move around a lot, so I'd agree with @scitechyEDU and @strugbook about the focus and flare diagram...though not in a linear way
  • LSpencerEdD Apr 25 @ 9:29 PM EDT
And cycles aren’t always neat, perfect circles either! #dtk12chat
    In reply to @DTprocess, @scitechyEDU
  • scitechyEDU - Moderator Apr 25 @ 9:29 PM EDT
Q2 Are there areas of the process (framework) you use that your students gravitate towards more? Try to avoid? Gets overlooked? #dtk12chat Please share your Whys too.
  • LSpencerEdD Apr 25 @ 9:30 PM EDT
Our “What’s Next?” Seems to get skipped, & I think it’s due to time constraints and lack of comfort w/true advocacy. #dtk12chat
    In reply to @scitechyEDU
  • strugbook Apr 25 @ 9:30 PM EDT
agreed. The process is definitely a cycle. Also, I completely agree that empathy is the most important part of the process #dtk12chat
    In reply to @Ed_by_design, @scitechyEDU
  • scitechyEDU - Moderator Apr 25 @ 9:30 PM EDT
Btw I have hard time processing tweets, staying focused on tasks & Modding at the same time so I will be revisiting this feed when its not so “LIVE” :) #dtk12chat
  • LSpencerEdD Apr 25 @ 9:31 PM EDT
We spend a lot of time in define, I’d guess, because Ts can most easily connect it w/state standards. But empathy is my fave place to hang out! #dtk12chat
  • DTprocess Apr 25 @ 9:32 PM EDT
I also "love the idea of having different models around the room to compare and inspire." Ts can improve S's balance of "meaningful versus confusing" by helping Ss discover (by reflection + discussion) how each model can add to their understanding-of-process. #dtk12chat
    In reply to @AshAusp, @GHSTEAMchic, @scitechyEDU, @stanforddschool, @kimsaxe
  • lndeutsch - Moderator Apr 25 @ 9:32 PM EDT
Howdy all! Super late. 9:30am here and need to prep for class. Missing the #dtk12chat family! #dtk12china
  • scitechyEDU - Moderator Apr 25 @ 9:32 PM EDT
The Produce aspect of #DEEPdt tends to be the wrap up party and it is too brief, surface, and then iteration loses steam… There is so much bulk in Empathize & Experiment a lot of times the fatigue factor hits as well as the time monster #dtk12chat
  • LSpencerEdD Apr 25 @ 9:33 PM EDT
Esp since we say the process isn’t a lock step thing…multiple models lets Ss follow what speaks to them. Agency! #dtk12chat
    In reply to @DTprocess, @AshAusp, @GHSTEAMchic, @scitechyEDU, @stanforddschool, @kimsaxe
  • scitechyEDU - Moderator Apr 25 @ 9:33 PM EDT
Hey Dane thanks for doing #dtk12chat tonight I would love to hear more about how you adapt DT processes If I liked the crown will I like Dr. Foster?
    In reply to @danapubs, @BBC
  • strugbook Apr 25 @ 9:34 PM EDT
A2 As a student I've found that beginning design classes really focus on the brainstorming and prototyping phases, but I gravitate towards the empathy and define phases. I think that's the place where you are really able to see new opportunities for design impact #dtk12chat
    In reply to @scitechyEDU
  • LSpencerEdD Apr 25 @ 9:34 PM EDT
Yes! I also feel like produce becomes a finality that it shouldn’t be. Ss should be allowed to keep exploring it, if they desire. #dtk12chat
    In reply to @scitechyEDU
  • njkraai Apr 25 @ 9:34 PM EDT
A1: I really like @ajjuliani and his LAUNCH cycle. Super easy for young learners to understand. #dtk12chat
  • AshAusp Apr 25 @ 9:34 PM EDT
A2 Our students struggle giving sufficient time to Gather b/c they're so impatient and tend to go with their 1st idea #dtk12chat
    • scitechyEDU - Moderator Apr 25 @ 9:29 PM EDT
Q2 Are there areas of the process (framework) you use that your students gravitate towards more? Try to avoid? Gets overlooked? #dtk12chat Please share your Whys too.

    In reply to @lndeutsch
  • GHSTEAMchic Apr 25 @ 9:35 PM EDT
A2: I still feel so new to process & actually trying w/Ss running the show. I need to help them more w/empathy & define to make it authentic; time and schedules is my very poor excuse #dtk12chat
  • k12lab Apr 25 @ 9:35 PM EDT
Our friends @strugbook are using #designthinking to bring #growthmindset to classrooms #dtk12chat #dtk12
  • DTprocess Apr 25 @ 9:35 PM EDT
yes, "cycles aren’t always neat, perfect circles" so I like the analogy of DT Process being like the goal-directed improvising of a hockey skater, not the rigid choreography of a figure skater. #dtk12chat
    In reply to @LSpencerEdD, @scitechyEDU
  • scitechyEDU - Moderator Apr 25 @ 9:35 PM EDT
Hey @AshAusp I’m curious if you had the option would you change the #designthinking process you currently utilize? #dtk12chat
  • scitechyEDU - Moderator Apr 25 @ 9:36 PM EDT
    Q3 on deck #dtk12chat
  • njkraai Apr 25 @ 9:37 PM EDT
A2: The young students want to go from idea to prototype and give very little thought to planning out their ideas in detail. #dtk12chat
    In reply to @scitechyEDU
  • LSpencerEdD Apr 25 @ 9:37 PM EDT
We all have to start somewhere! Time and schedules are such a constraint on creative flow! #dtk12chat
    In reply to @GHSTEAMchic
  • AshAusp Apr 25 @ 9:37 PM EDT
A2 Also students in Go often finally admit to issues that have been pointed out to them all along and should have been resolved prior - that's annoying - not enough reflecting on feedback maybe? combination of lack of critical thinking/laziness/impatience to move on? #dtk12chat
  • mritzius Apr 25 @ 9:37 PM EDT
I find people often want to converge too early during research. There's a need to have an answer and unwillingness to sit in the discomfort of unknowing #dtk12chat
  • WickedDecent - Moderator Apr 25 @ 9:38 PM EDT
    beautiful analogy here #BOOMshakalaka #designthinking #dtk12chat
    • DTprocess Apr 25 @ 9:35 PM EDT

Q3 Lets Talk #designthinking Mindsets Which DT Mindsets seem to flow like melted butter with your students? Which DT Mindsets feel like a rusty nail? #dtk12chat (using @stanforddschool mindsets as an example YET there are others)
  • AshAusp Apr 25 @ 9:38 PM EDT
TBH I haven't examined the other models side-by-side in a way that would encourage me to choose - just stuck with the hand-me-downs and tackled other issues as we moved fwd with the program... #dtk12chat
    In reply to @scitechyEDU
  • GHSTEAMchic Apr 25 @ 9:38 PM EDT
Agreed; although as I lead Ss through experiences sometimes weeks apart from last one I like to have them think about where they were & where they are going; not lock step but seeing where we are headed can help #DTK12chat
    In reply to @LSpencerEdD, @DTprocess, @AshAusp, @scitechyEDU, @stanforddschool, @kimsaxe
  • mritzius Apr 25 @ 9:39 PM EDT
Q2 Reframing tends to be problematic as well. People tend to fall in love with early ideas and struggle with letting go in the face of new insights #dtk12chat
  • GHSTEAMchic Apr 25 @ 9:39 PM EDT
Yes! This is my goal for Ss too! #dtk12chat
    In reply to @strugbook, @scitechyEDU
  • strugbook Apr 25 @ 9:39 PM EDT
That's so interesting cause in my college classes, the idea to prototype part tends to be much more paralyzing and difficult than the detail parts #dtk12chat

True! I am thinking about having our 6th graders reflect on the models and design their own. They can take it to middle school w/them and inspire change there. #dtk12chat

    In reply to @LSpencerEdD, @scitechyEDU
  • AshAusp Apr 25 @ 9:40 PM EDT
Lately I definitely feel that empathy is getting too easily overlooked & we're doing more #PBL than #DT but not sure if that's related to our current model, if I haven't developed my teachers well enough, if logistics or old mindsets are to blame, other? #dtk12chat

    In reply to @mritzius
  • GHSTEAMchic Apr 25 @ 9:42 PM EDT
Love it! & have them realize it's a prototype; as they use it in middle school they might need to modify as they encounter more complex learning & challenges; a great portfolio idea! #dtk12chat

A3 Bias Towards Action gets a slow start due to not being comfortable w/ the fast pace & lack of a road map Plus making a mistake Yet once a couple laps of DT is under the belt it becomes the No Brainer Mindset almost a Badge of Courage #dtk12chat
  • LSpencerEdD Apr 25 @ 9:42 PM EDT
We are seeing a lot of PBL masked as DT also. Is it not understanding empathy? Or trying too hard to integrate content standards? Or lack of understanding of DT? #dtk12chat
    In reply to @AshAusp, @scitechyEDU
  • Scibili_Melanie Apr 25 @ 9:43 PM EDT
A2: As a student, I think the define part would be the most difficult to target exactly what the challenge is. However, after reading more on design thinking, empathize seems to be the most important in creating a strong foundation. #barbersclass @barbersclass #dtk12chat

A3 Also, Show Don’t Tell tends to have a lot of talk… mainly to explain away the look of the prototype Its difficult to truly place the idea in front of people and walk away to let them freely digest it #dtk12chat

I think you're on to something with the standards - I have found when we plan from a standards point, rather than a community or interest point, we end up missing the empathy piece and doing #PBL - I recognize it for what it is, but once that train gets moving... #dtk12chat

Q4 How do you define #designthinking mindsets to your students? What are they? Why are they valued in #designthinking (are they?) #dtk12chat
  • LSpencerEdD Apr 25 @ 9:46 PM EDT
There’s nothing wrong with PBL. It has its place. But the key is making sure it is identified as such and not misidentified or mispackaged. #dtk12chat

One thing that helps a lot with this for me is to have our videos revolve around footage of actual users giving us feedback and using the product as well the initial needfinding. That way we show the users rather than tell a story about some made up user #dtk12chat

Totally agree. And since "design" is in the name of my program, I am def guilty of misrepresenting, though not intentionally! Trying to take us back to our original #DT roots, but teacher turnover is a bear #dtk12chat GREAT new Ts! But more PD needed and little time/$

in 2 graphics, we see a “symmetry” between Experiments done Mentally & Physically, to make Predictions (by mentally imagining) & Obervations (after physically actualizing) that we use in 3 Comparisons for Quality Checks and Reality Checks, https://t.co/ibZZkIXvI3 #dtk12chat

  • WickedDecent - Moderator Apr 25 @ 9:53 PM EDT
It's one of the greatest challenges in doing the more pure forms of #designthinking in the classroom; design firms have but one task to complete: meet the client's needs; our students -- our selves -- have many more roles to fill #dtk12chat

Yes, exactly, and our district is newly re-concerned with declining test scores, implementing benchmarks/pacing guides etc which is giving even my most creative & dedicated #DT teachers major pause/anxiety about what we do #dtk12chat Need to show them HOW it can still work
