  • MmeFarab May 17 @ 8:07 PM EDT
Mostly brain breaks! "I'm going on a trip" has been a popular one, but my eighth graders did a killer "Papaoutai" Just Dance the other day! #langchat
    In reply to @MlleSulewski
  • CatherineKU72 May 17 @ 8:07 PM EDT

Bonsoir #langchat! Dawn, I teach French in Central Ohio.
  • MlleSulewski May 17 @ 8:09 PM EDT
A1 LARGE change of transitioning from teaching HS to teaching college! #langchat
  • Marishawkins May 17 @ 8:09 PM EDT
A1- going textbookless! It has been a long process and culminated with having to use a textbook I hated so I was pretty much creating everything anyway... #langchat
  • als5nep May 17 @ 8:09 PM EDT
I’m Aaron. 2nd grade French immersion outside of Boston. Traveling around France with my students with photos, videos of my visits there. #langchat
  • MmeBlouwolff May 17 @ 8:10 PM EDT
A1 Standards-based grading, where meeting the proficiency target = B. Also, dept.-wide presentational rubric. #langchat
  • htrude07 May 17 @ 8:10 PM EDT
    Have you tried @gimkit? #langchat?
    In reply to @MmeJDavis, @gimkit
  • MmeFarab May 17 @ 8:10 PM EDT
Q1 this year I taught AP for the "first" time, in my new school. IT was definitely a steep learning curve but it can only get better. #langchat
  • SraWilliams3 May 17 @ 8:10 PM EDT
A1: I didn’t use my text book at all. Not for a consult for an activity. NOTHING. In fact, I just sent them back to district storage!!!!! #langchat
  • CatherineKU72 May 17 @ 8:10 PM EDT
Martinique & Guadeloupe trips in conjunction with @AATFrench keep me motivated. Students are currently pumped to engage their social/political voices as they describe school lunch realities & research on food waste. #langchat
  • MmeJDavis May 17 @ 8:11 PM EDT
Q1 Began following twitter chats and following tweets! #langchat
  • als5nep May 17 @ 8:11 PM EDT
A1: began using the Daily 5 with my class to improve literacy and reading endurance. #langchat
  • MmeFarab May 17 @ 8:11 PM EDT
... how do you know? XD #langchat
    In reply to @MlleSulewski
  • MlleSulewski May 17 @ 8:11 PM EDT
Isn't that a liberating and also terrifying experience? #langchat
    In reply to @SraWilliams3
  • madamednmichael May 17 @ 8:11 PM EDT
A1 a change I made this year was clipping curriculum, eliminating units that ss had previously not engaged with. doing more depth, less breadth. #langchat
  • SraWilliams3 May 17 @ 8:11 PM EDT
Me too!!!!!! It’s so refreshing! #langchat
    In reply to @Marishawkins
  • AggieAshley May 17 @ 8:12 PM EDT
We just adopted a new textbook, and we had zero curriculum, so we totally went off book. Don't even get me started on how awful I think textbooks are. #langchat
  • Madame_Dotcom May 17 @ 8:12 PM EDT
#langchat I'm Martha Behlow, French 2,4 & AP, Geneva HS, Geneva, IL! Speaking assessment prep, chateaux painting & 1 foot in front of the other!
  • CatherineKU72 May 17 @ 8:13 PM EDT
A1 #langchat Took extra time to reflect with students about their language learner & personal identities. This meant a few days were not in French, but connections to self & future abounded.
  • MlleSulewski May 17 @ 8:13 PM EDT
A2 Small change was using tons of PACE method lessons in my classes! No placement test & huge variety of levels was limiting but we made it work...mostly. #langchat
  • MmeBurgess May 17 @ 8:13 PM EDT
Salut, tout le monde! I'm Angela in Forsyth Co, GA. I've been out of the CR for 5 years as an ITS but am returning virtually next year to teach French 1 in addition to my other job as a Dist ITS for MS/HS. #langchat
    • MmeFarab May 17 @ 8:01 PM EDT
Good evening, #langchat! Let's take a moment to introduce ourselves: tell us who you are, where you are, what you teach, and what's keeping you going in or out of the classroom this May!
  • MlleSulewski May 17 @ 8:14 PM EDT
    And by A2 I clearly mean "A1.2" #langchat
  • htrude07 May 17 @ 8:14 PM EDT
A1: One change I have made is incorporating more PBL into the classroom. #langchat
  • MlleSulewski May 17 @ 8:14 PM EDT
Would love to know more! #langchat
    In reply to @htrude07
  • SraWilliams3 May 17 @ 8:14 PM EDT
It is. I’ve never been too in to using the book, but it was used. This year I went off it and dove into Somos from @MartinaBex and it all was amazing. We read novels! Loved it! #langchat
    In reply to @MlleSulewski, @MartinaBex
  • Marishawkins May 17 @ 8:15 PM EDT
Also since going textbookless and going back to level 1, I have learned a LOT more about proficiency to see how it develops even clearer #langchat
  • magisterb480 May 17 @ 8:15 PM EDT
A1 Having students in Latin 2 write more. Their stories are hysterical and feature recurring characters that I enjoy. And definitely speaking more Latin to students on a regular basis - not 90% by any stretch of the imagination but enough to get kids more exposure! #langchat
  • MmeBlouwolff May 17 @ 8:15 PM EDT
I am attending a @BuckInstitute training on PBL in July and I am excited to learn more about it! #langchat
    In reply to @htrude07, @BuckInstitute
  • MmeBurgess May 17 @ 8:16 PM EDT
How has that been? It's something I'm interested in trying...not now, but one day. #langchat
    In reply to @MlleSulewski
  • MmeFarab May 17 @ 8:16 PM EDT
I've been teaching novices for so long that I definitely forgot how to work with intermediates! #langchat

    In reply to @MmeBlouwolff, @htrude07, @BuckInstitute
  • Marishawkins May 17 @ 8:16 PM EDT
Isn’t it fascinating to see so much of the novels appearing in their speaking/writing even months later?! #langchat
    In reply to @SraWilliams3, @MlleSulewski, @MartinaBex
  • MmeBlouwolff May 17 @ 8:17 PM EDT
Well, I'd have to see what @SraSpanglish hasn't already written on this topic! #langchat
    In reply to @MlleSulewski, @htrude07, @BuckInstitute, @SraSpanglish
  • htrude07 May 17 @ 8:17 PM EDT
It is an awesome online game that is designed by a high school student. It’s way better than Kahoot. The Ss answer ?s and then earn money and can shop for advantages in the game. @Marishawkins has a blog post on it. #langchat
    In reply to @MmeJDavis, @gimkit, @Marishawkins
  • MmeFarab May 17 @ 8:17 PM EDT
Q2 Q2 What was your big "AHA" moment of the year? #langchat
  • MmeBurgess May 17 @ 8:17 PM EDT
Going sans textbook originally terrified me but I ended up loving the freedom of creating my own material! #langchat
    In reply to @Marishawkins
  • MlleSulewski May 17 @ 8:17 PM EDT
It's been okay. I have zero control/input into curriculum, which has been hard for a control freak like me to handle, but on the flip side is much less prep. #langchat
    In reply to @MmeBurgess
  • MlleSulewski May 17 @ 8:18 PM EDT
Took the words right out of my...fingers? #langchat
    In reply to @MmeFarab, @MmeBlouwolff, @htrude07, @BuckInstitute, @SraSpanglish

I’ll be writing a blog post soon. Just need to get my @actfl Language Teacher of the Year portfolio finished first. #langchat
    In reply to @MlleSulewski, @actfl
  • SraWilliams3 May 17 @ 8:18 PM EDT
Seriously every time I look at their writing. And their conversation has bloomed! I’ve had the best conversations with them lately #langchat
    In reply to @Marishawkins, @MlleSulewski, @MartinaBex
  • MlleSulewski May 17 @ 8:18 PM EDT
A2: My big AHA moment? I think I'm a high school teacher at heart! Let's get this degree done with so I can get back in the classroom! #langchat
  • MmeBlouwolff May 17 @ 8:18 PM EDT
A2 BVP-style Tasks. I'd been asking my Ss to turn n' talk for years, but never gave them a clear goal for the convo. Now I know. #langchat
  • MmeBurgess May 17 @ 8:19 PM EDT
True. That would be difficult for me too, as someone who wrote the curriculum for so many years! #langchat
    In reply to @MlleSulewski
  • SraSpanglish - Moderator May 17 @ 8:19 PM EDT
!!!!!!!!! I forgot about that!!!! It's going to be so awesome! Just remember you're much wiser going in than I was back when! #langchat #itooneedablogpost

  • magisterb480 May 17 @ 8:20 PM EDT
A1 And my Latin 1 class story “Itinera Liviae et Amicorum” is the best thing ever... completely influenced by my six freshmen’s imaginative ideas! Been teaching them basically through this story all year. Much more engaging than textbook stories! #langchat
  • MlleSulewski May 17 @ 8:20 PM EDT
    Q2 is up now! #langchat
  • SraSpanglish - Moderator May 17 @ 8:20 PM EDT
HUGE switch! But so meaningful! #langchat
    In reply to @htrude07
  • Marishawkins May 17 @ 8:20 PM EDT
A2- my biggest aha was watching how my 1s acquired the language and saw similarities with my 5s as well #langchat
  • MlleSulewski May 17 @ 8:20 PM EDT
Is there more info on this in his newest book? #langchat
    In reply to @MmeBlouwolff
  • SraWilliams3 May 17 @ 8:20 PM EDT
A2: to stay the course because the results are amazing. My kids have been writing and conversing at levels I couldn’t imagine using legacy methods. And they WANT to communicate. It’s that cup analogy that we fill them so full they have to give output! #langchat
  • MmeJDavis May 17 @ 8:20 PM EDT
A2 My kids want to talk more...really. Just in a safe space and amongst themselves. Give them a structured way to take the risk and they will. More guided conversations early on gave them confidence to do it more late without that structure. #langchat
  • MmeFarab May 17 @ 8:20 PM EDT
Q2 This year feels like a total blur ... I can't think of any AHA moments but maybe one will come to me. #langchat
  • SraSpanglish - Moderator May 17 @ 8:20 PM EDT

#langchat A2 My big a-ha moment: it doesn't all have to be sexy and exciting and perfectly executed all the time. We can do a practice sheet and the earth will still rotate.
  • MmeFarab May 17 @ 8:21 PM EDT
    Yaaaasssss #langchat

Well, I'm definitely older : ) #langchat I think my head is going to look like this after doing MOPI training, PBL *and* Proficiency Academy with @gretafromtexas this summer:
    In reply to @SraSpanglish, @htrude07, @BuckInstitute, @gretafromtexas
  • MlleSulewski May 17 @ 8:21 PM EDT
YES!! This is so true. I always built in a super informal "let's just chat" time at the beginning of class every. single. day. Made all the difference in the world in their proficiency and their confidence. #langchat
    In reply to @MmeJDavis
  • magisterb480 May 17 @ 8:21 PM EDT
Actually this should be A2. The Latin I story is still an “aha moment...” Who is the strange woman Livia sees in Rome? The students will find out next week (although they already know who it is...)! #langchat
#langchat
  • MmeBlouwolff May 17 @ 8:22 PM EDT
Yes, I've only read parts of While We're on the Topic, but it's in there. I need my MS PLC to motivate me to do PD reading (when there's not #langbook nudging me along). #langchat

  • als5nep May 17 @ 8:22 PM EDT
A2: Biggest aha moment is how technology maximized my Ss potential. Using Skype, merci @nycoldidcote using Flipgird, merci encore @nycoldidcote. Using storyjumper and boom cards as well. #langchat
  • RobuPrice May 17 @ 8:22 PM EDT
I’m working to maintain the use of the TL...one thing I try to do is write the directions, in French, in advance, with cognates and visuals. On a projected slide. Then I can explain the activity in the TL. Anyone else do this? Thoughts? #langchat
  • MlleSulewski May 17 @ 8:22 PM EDT
OMG this is so hard for me to get used to. I feel the need to be "on" all the time. #langchat

  • profe_robbins May 17 @ 8:25 PM EDT

A2: my ah-ha: I realized how much I hate explicit grammar. I am going to research PACE and other methods this summer #langchat
  • MmeBurgess May 17 @ 8:26 PM EDT
It might not rotate with emojis, but it will for sure keep going. But hey, life isn't always sexy or exciting or perfectly executed. Sometimes, it just spins...and others, it falls off the tracks. #langchat
    In reply to @PRHSspanish
  • SraWilliams3 May 17 @ 8:26 PM EDT

Late to #langchat and A1 More storytelling!
  • Travers_Tweets May 17 @ 8:27 PM EDT
A2- my biggest A-HA moment was once I started using glow and grow comments on rubrics. I started seeing longer, connected sentences and personalized vocab! #langchat
  • Marishawkins May 17 @ 8:27 PM EDT
Also I think early in my career Maris would wonder what I would have done without teaching grammar and we have gotten through a whole year with very little explicit grammar practice! #langchat
    • MmeGoodenough May 17 @ 8:26 PM EDT
A2: my ah-ha: I realized how much I hate explicit grammar. I am going to research PACE and other methods this summer #langchat

  • Travers_Tweets May 17 @ 8:29 PM EDT
I love PACE! It's so challenging for me and the kids but it really works! #langchat
    In reply to @MlleSulewski, @MmeGoodenough

  • CatherineKU72 May 17 @ 8:30 PM EDT
A2 #langchat I took a year to not create entire new units, blog, vlog, webinar, etc. It made a major impact on my stress level in November & for the rest of the year. Aha: I don’t always need to be producing & sharing. Back next year ;)
  • madamednmichael May 17 @ 8:31 PM EDT
A3 I volunteered to pilot STAMP testing in my district (towards Seal of Biliteracy) #langchat
  • MlleSulewski May 17 @ 8:31 PM EDT
A3: I did some CI-style lessons during my observations this year and got great feedback from my supervisor! She wants to do training for grad student instructors next year on similar methods. #langchat
  • MmeGoodenough May 17 @ 8:31 PM EDT
A3: I jumped into Standards-based (proficiency) for the first time. No tests, no quizzes. All IPA! LOVED it! #langchat
  • MmeJDavis May 17 @ 8:32 PM EDT
A3 My biggest risk was trying a whole new textbook and then deciding that I needed to supplement, supplement, supplement with technology and lots of other stuff...authentic stuff...not sure how it was going to turn out. My kids loved it! #langchat
  • als5nep May 17 @ 8:32 PM EDT
A3: Biggest risk was implementing the Daily 5 in a FI setting. It allowed me to take a deep dive at my classroom library, help Ss love to read as much as I do and build endurance to read longer. Learning along with them and having successes and failures too. #langchat
  • madamednmichael May 17 @ 8:32 PM EDT
Note to self: tell my mom not to call during #langchat Missed so much. 🙄
  • MmeFarab May 17 @ 8:32 PM EDT
Q3 I didn't commit to 90%+ TL in level one. Inner me felt bad about it, but we all had fun and they didn't end up hating me, so it was probably a win. #langchat

  • MmeBlouwolff May 17 @ 8:34 PM EDT
    A3 I think I'm back to A1: standards-based grading, where meeting the target = B. I didn't see that going down well in Lake Wobegon, but I haven't had a single complaint. #langchat #allBsallthetime
  • MmeGoodenough May 17 @ 8:34 PM EDT
I want to do more FVR next year- it got away from me this year. 😢#langchat
    In reply to @als5nep
  • SraWilliams3 May 17 @ 8:34 PM EDT
A3: my biggest risk was being more vocal about wanting to do things differently. Many of my colleagues are very staunch about how they teach. But they are slowly opening up to new ideas!!! #langchat
  • Madame_Dotcom May 17 @ 8:34 PM EDT
#langchat Great time 4 guest speakers & planting ideas 4 Ss futures! @AATFrench
  • Marishawkins May 17 @ 8:34 PM EDT

A3 -hit with an illness that put me completely out of commission for 1-2 months & I wasn't myself for 4.5.The risk I took was giving into the sickness & giving up control. Guess what? The beat went on!My team & school supported me & my Ss are happy & growing! It was hard #langchat

I think it’s important to be kinder to ourselves. My intent for level 1 was to speak enough Spanish to them that they don’t consider it crazy when they hear it. And some days are better than others! #langchat
