#6thchat is used to chat, collaborate, and grow with other sixth grade educators from around the globe. Each session we discuss a topic voted on by #6thchat participants. It's a great way to help grow your PLN and share ideas with others.
A1: It's always hard to say the "best" professional book, but this year, I am going to go with @KyleneBeers two books called 1) Disrupting Thinking and 2) Notice & Note. I find both are helping me to improve the reading lives of my students. #6thchat
A1: Teach Like A Pirate because it ignited a dulling flame in me to a full burn again for teaching and led me to so many other great books in the family. #6thchat#TLAP
A1: So many to choose from! Biggest impact in my classroom = both Notice and Note books from Probst/Beers, Passionate Learners from Ripp, Shift This from Kirr, Learn Like a Pirate from Solarz, Book Whisperer from Miller, Comprehension Connections McGregor...just so many #6thchat
A1: Teach Like a Pirate by @burgessdave has guided change in my lessons this year. I am about to dive into, for the 9th time, Best Year Ever by Bill Cecil to recharge my batteries in the 2nd half of the year. #6thchat
A2) So many of the pirate books are my favorites, and I also need to nominate Shift This! by @JoyKirr with her ideas to move to more of a student led classroom! #6thchat
Shift This by Kirr and Learn Like a Pirate by Solarz. If you don't follow Pernille Ripp's blog, I recommend that too. So much to inspire you to stay the course in the blogs of all these authors! #6thchat
A2: I changed my classroom to be more student led after reading @PaulSolarz Learn Like A Pirate He helped me let go Also Kids Deserve It by @TechNinjaTodd@awelcome#6thchat
Oooo....need to look at Wildcard...I love Ditch That Textbook by @jmattmiller and it is a "go to" for me. I also follow his website and so many other cool contributions he makes to our profession! #6thchat

A3) Again, I would recommend most pirate books and the "Hacking" series, but I am currently being inspired by @GregoryMcKeown and his book Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less. Many applications to self and our schools. Very transformational for me. #6thchat
The books that I could reread often are by Alan November( @globalearner) changed how I viewed the teaching of technology and started my on my Master's path a few years ago. #6thchat
A4) I will nominate the Google Infused Classroom by @HollyClarkEdu and @TanyaAvrith as a practical, easy to use book w/both pedagogy and digital tools. #6thchat
A3: I really enjoyed reading Vicki Vinton's Dynamic Teaching for Deeper Reading: Shifting to a Problem-Based Approach this summer. Really gets you thinking about Reading pedagogy, what works, and why. Great read! #6thchat

This would be perfect for that. It is such a "freeing" book. It gives you permission to let writing be what it should be and that is NOT a 5 paragraph essay. @KatherineBomer#6thchat

A4: I got to see some of the strategies from Ditch that Textbook at #MACUL17. Haven't read the book, but from what I've been exposed to, it looks like it could be a winner. #6thchat
You'll love it!!! You can almost hear the authors excitement for teaching, creating, and deep, creative thought on the pages. There is an almost sketchnote quality to the book formatting. #6thchat
A5: I read Drums, Girls, and Dangerous pie with my 6th graders. We got it as our grade level text to build empathy w/ our Ss, and I fell in love with it. Ss really make great connections and have meaningful discussion about the content. #6thchat
You are preaching my language! Let us instill joy in writing AND reading...remove these silly constraints! Let's return to teaching students to love books, and the page! #6thchat

Any Global Read Aloud book, 'Long Walk to Water' by @LindaSuePark this year was a great discussion starter. As was 'Pax' by Sara Pennypacker last year. #6thchat
A5 Definitely A Long Walk to Water and Wonder. Both books that stay with you! Last year we read Jason Reynold's Ghost aloud and that generated a lot of great discussion too. First person narrator and lots for 6ths to relate to. #6thchat
Once we got through it, my Ss made me get the sequel and read it. When your Ss say they want you to read to them, you can't possibly turn them down. #6thchat
A6) My Ss laughed a lot during The Sixth Grade Nickname Game that I read during the first couple of weeks of school by @gordonkorman It was great for us to have dialogue about community, leadership, nicknames, integrity, reading, and more! #6thchat
Yes. This was my first year with #GRA. Will definitely participate again. We loved The Wild Robot. Shoutout to @pernilleripp for creating such an engaging movement. #6thchat

I had my Ss make mock Facebook profiles for a Reading Month project to help them build understanding of the characters and their development. It was funny to see some of the connections they made. #6thchat
My sons have declared this their favorite book of all time! I don't even need the text anymore. I can do it poetry slam style for more emotion added. #6thchat
A6: One of my favorite read alouds was The False Prince by Jennifer Nielsen. The main character, Sage, is edgy and sarcastic and the plot is exciting and intriguing. They laugh, gasp, and love this first book in the Ascendance Trilogy. #6thchat
I've got to go but I just finished Hope in the Holler last night and you need it! :) It's a book for kids who need hope - and isn't that just about all of them? Stay warm everyone! #6thchat@LisaLewisTyre@nancyrosep
A7) I think I have to nominate Fish in a Tree by @LynMullalyHunt as I enjoy making connections to the growth mindset, helping Ss understand learning challenges, and building community. I have looked forward to sharing this one with my class for the past 3 years! #6thchat
A7: Tried some shorter nonfiction read alouds this year and loved them! Great for teaching and also awesome to see kids learning new things! See Orbis Pictus awards for some good ones. This year's fav was Finding Winnie - true story of Winnie the Pooh! #6thchat
A7: It wasn't a read aloud, but one of my classes insisted I read the Legend series along with them. We all read it and had a book club during SSR time on Mondays to talk about the week's chapters. I thought about doing it because I loved the books that much. #6thchat
A8) I really enjoyed The Enemy by @saraholbrook because it takes place in Michigan, in the '50s--so many connections to today w/immigration, how to treat others, family relationships, and more! #6thchat
#6thchat Last question! Wow! So many fabulous book recommendations! This hour flew! I'm always afraid I will fall asleep as this is a bit past my bedtime, but you all have such great ideas...inspiring! #6thchat
A8: My favorite new authors lately = Kelly Barnhill who wrote The Witch's Boy and The Girl Who Drank the Moon. Also love Lauren Wolk who wrote Wolf Hollow and Beyond the Bright Sea. Great books with fabulous writing! #6thchat
I didn't...only because the GRA comes up pretty quickly. I start with 6th grade Nickname game, do #GRA, and then Fish in a Tree right after and before Xmas. Seems to be a good timing, too. #6thchat
Thanks #6thchat for all of these wonderful book suggestions! Some were "old friends" and others are "yet to meet" books! Looking forward to new explorations! Have a wonderful reading week! #6thchat
Thanks for the book talk #6thchat I feel like I need to go straight to the Amazon website to check out some of these recommendations. Have a wonderful week everyone!
Awesome book chat tonight, #6thchat crew. My local library hold list is now longer than it was an hour ago!
Thanks for leading the way @mrskochheiser!
Now off to finish the last 15 pages of Dan Brown's Origin and start something new before bed.
