The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) is starting a new #prinleaderchat every Sunday at 9:00 pm EST. We will be starting this Sunday October 2. Our schedule is listed on this google spreadsheet https://goo.gl/SI9LVo.
A1: Compassikn, caring, respect, positivity...But I think some of the most important characteristics are grace and humanity. We are all humans, and we all need a little grace! #PrinLeaderChat
A2: Get to know students! Be visible. Make connections. Attend their activities. Recognize their achievements--both academic & other ones. Value them as people & listen to their input. They are insightful & have so much to offer in the process of how we do school! #PrinLeaderChat
A2 Eat lunch with Ss. Take time to get to know them outside of school. Ss don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care! #PrinLeaderChat
A2 - to build rapport with the students you need to simply have conversations with them and truly listen when they talk! I like lunchroom conversations the best and they will open up if they know you care! #PrinLeaderChat
A1: Empathy and humility-we need people who are willing to walk in the shoes of others without judgement and people with humility to put others first. Those are wonderful qualities for those that work with kids and can put them first #PrinLeaderChat
A2 - to build rapport with the students you need to simply have conversations with them and truly listen when they talk! I like lunchroom conversations the best and they will open up if they know you care! #PrinLeaderChat
A2: Letting them know that you value them and that you listen. It's also important to know their interests outside of school. Lunch time conversations are always the best! #PrinLeaderChat
A1: Compassion, caring, respect, positivity...But I think some of the most important characteristics are grace and humanity. We are all humans, and we all need a little grace! #PrinLeaderChat
A2: Asking them about themselves, wanting to know about their lives, eating lunch with the student(s), and having conversations in your classroom. #PrinLeaderChat
A2: Be visible, get out into classrooms, talk to kids in the cafeteria, in the morning, during the day, fist bumps, treat them like people, start with yes sometimes when your instincts tell you to say no.... #PrinLeaderChat
A2: Take the time to get to know them. Eat lunch with them. Talk to them in the hallway. Visit their classroom and help out while you are there. Let them know that you care about them, not just their test score! #PrinLeaderChat
A2: Get to know something about them! Connect in meaningful ways for that student. Some need you to know their academic performance, some need you to know their hobbies, some need you to know about their family dynamics. Figure out what they need you to know! #prinleaderchat
A2- It’s all about exposure and building relationships with Ss in the hallways, the cafeteria, classroom, bus duty etc. - being visible and more importantly, being intentionally-accessible #PrinLeaderChat
A2: I try to be everywhere the kids are-classrooms, lunchrooms, events. The more you make yourself available the better the chance your are there when needed. Also like 2x10 strategy-spend 2 minutes for 10 days in a row with a students who might be in need. #PrinLeaderChat
A2: I find just talking to students whenever you can makes a huge difference. They feel like people and return the conversation as well. #prinleaderchat
A3: Get to know the staff as people! Make an effort to learn as much as you can about them. Teachers are people first and should be treated as such #prinleaderchat
A3 Take time to get to know your staff beyond the classroom. Let staff know you appreciate what they do and find time to celebrate together! #PrinLeaderChat
#PrinLeaderChat Yes! Be present, honest. Start with trying to get to yes. If it needs to be a no, explain why. I have some grade 5’s wanting a talent show (staff not wanting one), but trying to find a way to yes.
A3: Get to know the staff as people! Make an effort to learn as much as you can about them. Teachers are people first and should be treated as such #prinleaderchat
A3: Get to know your staff as people--who they are, why they are there, what makes them tick...Make connections with them. Most importantly--remember they are PEOPLE! Leaders need to model grace and humanity if we want teachers to model it for our students. #PrinLeaderChat
A3 Kids and adults respond to the same things: Be open, be honest, listen, be visible, listen, be human, admit when you're wrong, lead, listen, don't look at a screen while talking to them, listen... #PrinLeaderChat
A3: Be available, give praise, be humble, be kind, feed them, give the the gift of time, listen, say yes more, say thank you, include fun games and challenges and get to know them as people. #PrinLeaderChat
A3: Support the idea to take care of themselves, their family and then work! Providing a positive outlook! Communicate, communicate, communicate! #PrinLeaderChat
A3: Be willing to show them you're real. Be silly, be vulnerable, be visible, be a servant. The more involved you are in all of the things they are doing, the more opportunities to connect. #prinleaderchat
A3 - we try to add fun opportunities for collaboration, in addition to PD-type activities, that focus on students -“who knows this student - if I had one wish - what engagement isn’t - etc.” #PrinLeaderChat
Q3: Respect for them as a whole person regardless of their role. They are more than their job or job description. Lots of untapped value when you view them through a preconceived lens. #PrinLeaderChat
#PrinLeaderChat Sometimes we have to persuade the adults that it won't be the end of the world to try something new, or something fun, that kids are asking us for, no matter how crazy we think it is. Guess what? It usually works out!
A4 Soup socials, ice cream, and dinner gatherings allow you to get to know your staff on a personal level and help build your school culture. #PrinLeaderChat
A4: We go to fitness classes together, text to check on one another, get together to relax (Hosted a brunch for the teachers), support them at various events. #PrinLeaderChat
A4 If you live in the community you work in, everything you do out in the community with your own family is an opportunity to build positive relationships. Every conversation with a parent beyond the school walls helps them see you are human. #PrinLeaderChat
A4: We have staff socials, a staff kickball tournament, we've done twitter chat get togethers, painting parties, and now we're rolling into March Madness with staff that requires teams to branch out beyond their grade level. #prinleaderchat
A4: Be present at their activities outside of the school day: Baseball games, Football games, etc. When they see that you take an interest in them outside of the instructional day, they'll move mountains for you. #PrinLeaderChat
A4 I will show up at non-school sponsored events that students are involved in. I've been to the dirt track to watch a kid race, been to the sale barn to watch them sell their animals at the county fair, a former student's first sermon as a pastor, etc. #PrinLeaderChat
A4 - team building activities like breakout edu games, faculty versus student kickball, softball, soccer, baseball and basketball games and luncheons because if you bring food to the party people will show up and then you provide a chance to build relationships! #PrinLeaderChat
A4: Show them that you are invested in your students, staff, and school...Be present...Staff gatherings, student activities, community events... #PrinLeaderChat
