@IOLblog
Should be an intersting topic. Will see if I can comment or ask questions. No experience switching LMS.. at least not yet.

We can access Twitter on wifi at work but not the hard-wired connection. Oh well... Glad to be here for
#IOLChat
:)
IOLblog
Mar 30 @ 12:07 PM EDT
@ceasom
That's just crazy.
#IOLchat
But glad you're able to access one way or another.

Q1 coming up! ... Surviving an
#LMS
Switch

Will be in and out today :-). Jennifer from ATL - grad student and adjunct online learning

@jshamsy
Hey there, Jennifer!
#IOLchat
IOLblog
Mar 30 @ 12:11 PM EDT
Q1) How often do you experience a switch?
#LMS
#iolchat
ceasom
Mar 30 @ 12:13 PM EDT
Have only ever experienced a switch in
#LMS
when changing jobs so far, but we've considered implications of a switch here

A2) about when I get settled - every couple of years unfortunately
#iolchat
ajwalshiv
Mar 30 @ 12:14 PM EDT
@IOLblog
A1 For me, I remember when I was a student and Bb took over WebCT.
#iolchat
IOLblog
Mar 30 @ 12:14 PM EDT
@ceasom
How long have you been using the one you are using now?
#IOLchat
What sparks the covo to consider a switch?
IOLblog
Mar 30 @ 12:15 PM EDT
@jshamsy
Ha! That sounds more like my experience - every 3-5 years. And with two schools, it can mean a lot of switching around.
#iolchat
IOLblog
Mar 30 @ 12:16 PM EDT
@ajwalshiv
I remember that too! WebCT was the one I started with (way back) and then the school moved to Bb
#IOLchat
Everyone was confused.
ceasom
Mar 30 @ 12:17 PM EDT
Using Blackboard for 5 years now. I came from eCollege at my last job. Switch consideration is based on pricing, tech capabilities
#iolchat
ajwalshiv
Mar 30 @ 12:17 PM EDT
@IOLblog
I only have experience with Bb as a student and in my work. I've "explored" or reviewed others. Nothing extensive.
#iolchat
jshamsy
Mar 30 @ 12:17 PM EDT
@ajwalshiv
@IOLblog
WebCT was my first ever LMS experience in online learning - actually worked well!
#IOLchat
jshamsy
Mar 30 @ 12:18 PM EDT
@IOLblog
yes! Luckily there are becoming variations on the same themes
#IOLchat
jshamsy
Mar 30 @ 12:18 PM EDT
@ceasom
I just think with many you are paying for options that you don't or shouldn't use
#IOLchat
IOLblog
Mar 30 @ 12:19 PM EDT
@ceasom
That's a pretty good chunk of time. Pricing seems to be a lot of the decision.
#IOLchat
ceasom
Mar 30 @ 12:19 PM EDT
@jshamsy
Agreed. Some options can be turned off, but you still pay for them whether used or not
#iolchat
IOLblog
Mar 30 @ 12:21 PM EDT
Q2) How much lead time do you usually have? How long does the switch usually take to complete?
#iolchat
IOLblog
Mar 30 @ 12:21 PM EDT
@jshamsy
Q2 may be mainly for us. :)
#iolchat
jshamsy
Mar 30 @ 12:22 PM EDT
@ceasom
sounds a lot like car shopping - do I really need heated seats?
#IOLchat
IOLblog
Mar 30 @ 12:23 PM EDT
A2) I've had more than a year to prepare and a little less than a year. But that seems to be the general timeframe.
#iolchat
jshamsy
Mar 30 @ 12:24 PM EDT
A2)
@ceasom
would know about that -- it does seem like it takes a semester or two to shake out
#iolchat
ceasom
Mar 30 @ 12:27 PM EDT
A2) I agree with
@Melissa_Venable
that a year is about right to choose and switch
#LMS
effectively. Lots of ripple effects.
#iolchat
ceasom
Mar 30 @ 12:28 PM EDT
It's common to run old and new
#LMS
simultaneously and transition over slowly for a semester or two
#iolchat
IOLblog
Mar 30 @ 12:28 PM EDT
Q3) What are the most important features of an
#LMS
to focus on in a transition or when considering a switch?
#iolchat
IOLblog
Mar 30 @ 12:29 PM EDT
@ceasom
I've seen that, too. A slow roll-over with a final semester when the old system will be active and available.
#iolchat
IOLblog
Mar 30 @ 12:31 PM EDT
@ceasom
wondering now about the impact of that on students - some courses in new system, others in old.
#iolchat
ceasom
Mar 30 @ 12:31 PM EDT
@IOLblog
One solution would be to teach out a cohort on the old system and bring new cohorts onto the new
#LMS
. Avoids confusion
#iolchat
IOLblog
Mar 30 @ 12:34 PM EDT
@ceasom
I like that idea!
#IOLchat
May add to the logistical hurdles behind the scenes, but could be effective option.
ceasom
Mar 30 @ 12:35 PM EDT
@IOLblog
It's a tracking nightmare for the operations team, but seamless for students
#iolchat
IOLblog
Mar 30 @ 12:36 PM EDT
@ceasom
Sometimes we need to really revisit priorities. ;)
#IOLchat
IOLblog
Mar 30 @ 12:36 PM EDT
Q4) What can students and instructors do to prepare for a new
#LMS
?
#iolchat
ceasom
Mar 30 @ 12:39 PM EDT
@IOLblog
Try to be ahead of the learning curve; tutorials/workshops on new system ahead of time, practice.orientation course
#iolchat
IOLblog
Mar 30 @ 12:41 PM EDT
@ceasom
I think this is where the timeframe expands - on the admin side it may take more like 2 years, to build training resources
#iolchat
ceasom
Mar 30 @ 12:42 PM EDT
@IOLblog
Agreed. From initial selection of new
#LMS
to final implementation could be two years or even longer.
#iolchat
IOLblog
Mar 30 @ 12:43 PM EDT
@ceasom
Yes! What the faculty and students experience is just one(last) phase of the overall project.
#LMS
#iolchat
ceasom
Mar 30 @ 12:45 PM EDT
@IOLblog
There has to be several dry runs behind the scenes with "fake" courses receiving robust testing by admin/faculty
#iolchat
jshamsy
Mar 30 @ 12:45 PM EDT
@IOLblog
@ceasom
This should be at the forefront!
#iolchat
-clear idea of what you are trying to accomplish - can get lost in bells/whistles
IOLblog
Mar 30 @ 12:45 PM EDT
Last Q ... Q5) Are there alternatives to using an
#LMS
in online ed?
#iolchat
jshamsy
Mar 30 @ 12:45 PM EDT
@IOLblog
Be proactive - ask questions....do some research on your own - think about how this might affect you/students
#iolchat
jshamsy
Mar 30 @ 12:46 PM EDT
A5) think there are lots of Web 2.0 tools that you can put together an LMS -- it is only a medium not the instruction
#iolchat
ceasom
Mar 30 @ 12:46 PM EDT
@IOLblog
Yes, but depends on the purpose of your "courses". Basic training could be provided with YouTube links and Google Docs
#iolchat
ceasom
Mar 30 @ 12:47 PM EDT
@jshamsy
Yup! The LMS brings everything together for progress tracking, but many tools can be used to get the job done
#iolchat
IOLblog
Mar 30 @ 12:48 PM EDT
@ceasom
True enough - a lot of variables here. I've known faculty members to go rogue and create their own course sites, too.

Progress tracking, "attendance" = considerations for using
#LMS
Integration with student info systems like CampusVue too
#iolchat
ceasom
Mar 30 @ 12:51 PM EDT
Separate tools may provide an online "course" but don't provide formal data tracking and integration for report production, etc
#iolchat
IOLblog
Mar 30 @ 12:52 PM EDT
@ceasom
Good point! There are a lot of "behind the scenes" connections between LMS and non-instructional functions
#IOLchat
jshamsy
Mar 30 @ 12:53 PM EDT
@ceasom
Nice thing about LMS is keeps it simple - all in one spot w/plug-ins-good learner analysis will help determine solution
#iolchat
ceasom
Mar 30 @ 12:53 PM EDT
@IOLblog
LOL I guess I have my admin & accreditation hat on today instead of an educator's ;)
#iolchat
jshamsy
Mar 30 @ 12:53 PM EDT
@ceasom
I rarely use those tracking tools... =(
#iolchat
ceasom
Mar 30 @ 12:55 PM EDT
@jshamsy
I don't think most instructors use those tools, but admin needs the data for accreditation, state, and dept of ed reports
#iolchat
IOLblog
Mar 30 @ 12:55 PM EDT
@ceasom
It helps to have all of the relevant perspectives in attendance. ;)

LOTS data mining and analysis behind the scenes for quality assurance, retention, etc. LMS data helps that process
#iolchat
jshamsy
Mar 30 @ 12:57 PM EDT
@ceasom
I think this is where a more systemic/holistic plan would come into play - most aren't using that
#iolchat
jshamsy
Mar 30 @ 12:58 PM EDT
@ceasom
I.e..instructors just teach/IDers just design .. need to get a collaborative effort together - get rid of the silos!
#iolchat
jshamsy
Mar 30 @ 12:58 PM EDT
@ceasom
I can totally see the use in that!
