Jonathan, a Library & Instructional Tech Specialist at I co-org with every Wed 9PM ET. This is my 20th year!
Melissa vet teacher (17+) in Ohio.....we are 1:1 iPad k-8
I'm a 4th yr Tech Integrator K-5 in midcoast ME. 2012 UMF grad. No 1-1 here, but I always love !
Dan, 5th year business teacher from St. Louis. Trying to use 1:1 as much as possible in all classes.
I’m hoping that some of the amazing students can join & me for tonight!
It's go time, ! Question 1 (Q1) is on deck!
FYI: ETEP was the most intense and professionally rewarding 9-mo. of my life! Best choice ever!
Tim, 4th and 5th grade classroom teacher, 1:1 ipads. I was once a PST (thanks Mrs. Storer).
I'm Sean Scanlon. Director of Instructional Tech at Marian Catholic HS in IL.
Q1: Why did you choose teaching as your profession?
glad you could join and me tonight! It’s going to be a good one! I love chats w/ PST!
Hi there Sean! And thanks for the follow! Welcome to tonight!
A1: I love kids & have a passion for learning. It's not work when you go to school happy & inspired. Life is good!
A1: I began teaching after I finished MA studying youth media culture. I wanted to work WITH Ss, not from a distance.
I loved being around the kids & helping them figure things out. Amazing experiences while I was in high school in NYC
Woot! Great to see new & regular faces. Thx for joining us
I tutored my niece for years & then started coaching. I realized there was nothing else I ever wanted to do.
A1 I chose teaching bc it is impactful, fun, & my experience as a S was not easy (not bc of my learning profile. Poor system)
I chose teaching because, of all the career choices I looked at, it was the one that I could help others the most in
Sean Tech Integrator, Dover Foxcroft, Vet teacher. Kansas for the win
Hi Tim! Not only do you have 1:1 prowess, you are also a model for sharing w/ PSTs!
A1: The freedom to influence, craft, and develop minds of Ss
A1: I became a teacher to make a difference and impact Ss lives like mine was in high school.
. Just curious - what were the challenges and what steps did you take to correct them in your own practice?
Framing an opportunity for PSTs to see the power of PLN in action. Much to learn beyond the university c'room
Agreed. Pretty sure every T can still identify the 1 (or more) T that was a HUGE reason for career choice.
Q2: How might practicing Ts best support PSTs as they shift into the classroom, especially in a 1:1 model or w/?
. I think & I agree- hence the emphasis on PLN development as we teach !
A2: Get connected! I wish I had started building my PLN on day one & believe was a required course for new Ts!
A2: Share! Blog, tweet, & model your experience. We only learn from what we see. Recently getting my blog on. Super reflective!
Make sure they are comfortable with the tech in a 1:1 program. Give them time to play https://t.co/P1RwFTylcv
Q2: How might practicing Ts best support PSTs as they shift into the classroom, especially in a 1:1 model or w/?
A2: Providing PD with in-staff development, collaboration, and Ss interaction. Talking with Ss gives everyone a perspective.
I moved around a lot. Ts did not take the time to help me adjust. Now, plenty of check ins, reflections, voice!
A2: OPEN YOUR DOOR! Whether you're PST or veteran, NOTHING substitutes for watching other Ts in action + a follow up discussion
A2: through the use of a mentor program. Help show them the ropes and how you use tech in the classroom
a2 have a back up plan. And allow activities that build hand skills at any level
A1: I didn't choose teaching, it chose me...passionate @ education bc I could be the Ts that I should have had for all classes
Does there need to be clearer communication between PST programs & districts? Who "makes the time"?
We need to encourage Admin to find ways to encourage Ts to observe each other. Ts need time.
Hi I am so late, but bananas were needed. Shai from PA. HS Math T.
I had the luxury of student teaching under one of my most influential Ts from HS.
Was told by my evaluating admin that Ts need to get in and watch me. I guess thats a compliment.
A2 Model planning, invite to PD, get them connected, let PSTs play & explore. Listen to their ideas. Engage in disc.
YES need to have conversations to what could be in schools. Classrooms need to be open before PST come https://t.co/Ccb2aLd1QT
Does there need to be clearer communication between PST programs & districts? Who "makes the time"?
I think so, and there are so many gaps that PSTs could help us fill in short-staffed Schls.
Thanks, Jonathan. I kinda wish I lived in a climate that I could grow a banana tree. Hubby and I eat so many.
Definitely a compliment. Even our best Ts can pick up new ideas
Absolutely! A great compliment! The most effective models are right down the hall!
A2: YES YES YES What better use of resources than release time to observe Ts & collaborate. Team teach too! Invaluable
PST have grown up with the tech, maybe they have more to share. Use them as a resource
A2: As much as anything, watching colleagues push through challenges - not just "perfect" teaching - is priceless for PST
= Pre Service Teacher chat
I was thinking tech, but you bring up a more urgent point- how to connect good Ts w/schs!
Got it, . I love working with pre-service Ts. I love being a mentor. Always learn from them too!
A2: work together & share knowledge/resources,realize that it takes all of us & each level of exp has contributions
A2: We can offer planning time with co-operating Ts + welcome them to Department Meetings + Faculty Meetings = Great perspective
Yes ! How many staged exemplars did we watch that just created anxiety due to their perfection? Not realistic
Q3: If you could wave your magic wand, what would you envision as the ultimate collaboration between PSTs & classroom educators?
YES! Every mentor T I talk to notes how much having a fresh perspective helps them rethink "old" ways https://t.co/2kWhCx6WZ5
Got it, . I love working with pre-service Ts. I love being a mentor. Always learn from them too!
A2: Always be there to listen, guide, offer support. Share everything you have. They may not want it, but it's there.
Before I use a tool I play w/ it. Then my Ss play. PST should have the heads up & play too! Markers for all!
There is no more authentic a glimpse of a school’s nuances than a faculty or dept. meeting, for sure
wish meet & greet off school grounds to be able to chat in a less stress, maybe at the college https://t.co/VvmErlwKwb
A2: We can offer planning time with co-operating Ts + welcome them to Department Meetings + Faculty Meetings = Great perspective
A3: More style discussions w/ blended opportunities to extend conversations to deepen & evolve understanding.
Def a challenge w/ time, but observation time must increase for PSTs. Easy on current Ts
A3: A true practicum of classroom management & tech integration in a live classroom over the course of a year
A3: We can learn so much from eachother! New Ts fresh eyes collaborating w/ exp. Ts years in classrooms = EduGOLD!
it is also important to have students draw out ideas. It is start of the design process.
A3 The magic wand would create more time in the day so a mentor & PST could sit, plan, & reflect before, during, and after day.
A3: team teaching&literally walking in teacher shoes,planning/bus duty/discipline/IEP meetings & teaching jointly
A3: My M.S.Ed. = 8 months co teaching + UPenn supervision + classes with my cohort AND mentor Ts. Near perfect.
A3 more in-class time with a variety of teachers
A3: I think has it right. She connects PST to a virtual mentor. That PST makes authentic projects for VM to use.
A3 mores time spent with the listen to her, kids
A3 The magic wand would also generate outside observers not connected to school or college to provide ideas & feedback
A3: I would also love to see Discipline X PST collaborating with Discipline Y Veterans for some work. Busting silos on Day 1.
Maybe prior to placement chat to make sure all mesh? https://t.co/1IOPKGTujT
A3 more in-class time with a variety of teachers
A3: Encourage more style offerings that PST can connect and network with those in the classroom.
A3: I would take a approach and do some 1:1 mentoring/training to help them out through the process.
Tim, I wish more schools would build an hour a day for team building/planning for Ss learning experiences.
And if they go to other classes. They'll focus on strategies/pedagogy & not just content.
A3: I met taking a grad class her PST year/my 15h year getting recert credits. Invaluable learning experience
you need to,see what to,do and what not to do
A3: We also need to see higher ed start mandating classes. My mentee last year had NO edtech training in undergrad.
expressed this more eloquently than I did. Much value in merging approaches to curric., tech & collab!
darn comma near the space bar
Classes like that are few and far between. Just asked if I would come speak to a group about it. https://t.co/nsIgBmbxJ6
A3: We also need to see higher ed start mandating classes. My mentee last year had NO edtech training in undergrad.
Agreed. Unfortunately it's hard for a PST to differentiate between good vs. bad teaching w/o guidance
agreed! and not just Microsoft office!
That's a great idea. Start teaching them how to write & reach personal goals. Blogging?
., I think we are starting to see a shift. Edu Depts are seeing that their PSTs need formal training in using .
OR just learning how to integrate the graphing calclulator into a math class. Ugh!
So why do they observe alone? How can they discuss what they saw. Team up!!
Our school now requires every T to be on a PLC. That time is to do just that, supposably.
A3: HUGE issue is incorrect assumption that PST are Digital Natives ergo tech-savvy teachers. NO. Must develop this unique skill
Q4: Reflection time! If you could change anything about your PST training, what would it be? What worked well?
to me it is about watching kid's reactions
I enjoyed that course because it brought a range of edus together - PSTs learning with experienced Ts!
groups can throw teacher off their game. We have a college that does it and it was strange for teacher
A4: I would of loved to see more quality EDUs stepping up & embracing a coaching/mentoring role.
I know I learned how to use a printer that held markers - hooked up to an Apple IIe
How about just tech training? None when I went through. https://t.co/SfPuRge8WA
Q4: Reflection time! If you could change anything about your PST training, what would it be? What worked well?
I agree PST not tech-savvy, just like many assume Dig Native Ss are tech savvy - they're not.
We also have a PLC time, buts it's only once a week. It's a very effective time. Imagine having it 5 days?!
They need to teach authentic use of . Projects that PST will find valuable and not just busy work.
A huge myth! It distances us from our resp to help dev sound practice. Repurpose the tool to afford learning.
15 years, you say? Good thing we value intergenerational edu collaboration here! (I kid, I kid!)
A4: I was very prepared, esp. w/implementing sound assessment practices. Would've liked more course options.
Ah, my Apple IIe had a dot-matrix. Jjjj Jjjj Jjjj. Jjj Jjj Jjj. https://t.co/vLAzgrf30P
I know I learned how to use a printer that held markers - hooked up to an Apple IIe
student reaction is as telling as student voice
A4: handson/real exp w/non textbook related classroom req&walk in Ts paths for all roads inc discipline/meetings/busduty
I was definitely just thinking pairs. More than that and Ts wouldn't go for it.
Our PLC time is built into the schedule for every other day. (block scheduling) Only required 1 day a week.
A4.2: spent an entire year w/ Ts & that worked well bc I saw more than a glimpse
Risky assumption. This is where we can integrate an impactful (necessary) lesson in !
A4: my PST training focused too much on how NOT to teach rather than how TO teach. More focus on daily routines
A4: how to use the grade book systems and daily teach used in the classroom.
. Purposeful learning is something I am trying to do w/ We focus on thinking of S outcomes then integration
I wish we could get that PLC time when we need it. Not just scheduled time.
Ss may be able to use tech, the real question is:can they use it appropriately/purposefully?
huge difference in texting/gaming vs tech integration in the classroom as a learning resource
As long as we need them to SnapChat what's going on in class or show Netflix on laptops, we're good.
A4: My PST training didn't exist. 20 years ago, there weren't computers in the classrooms for the most part.
A4 Number Munchers and Oregon Trail do not count but I was held accountable for proper use of the overhead projector.
Gamification is an effective strategy, but playing games is not even in the same ballpark.
A4: graphing calcs were just starting to come on board, so after I started Ting, learned how to use one.
Ever wonder if SnapChat will be the next social media tool we adapt for learning?
I had a Media class 20 years ago - learned to use a Mimio, no foolin'. https://t.co/qtUkUpVCIq
A4: My PST training didn't exist. 20 years ago, there weren't computers in the classrooms for the most part.
Q5: The PLN is powerful! How would you define/describe the impact of being a connected educator? Or the potential?
A4: More than pure "real world", I got some incredible intros to pedagogy/theory at . Bell Hooks, Friere, Zinn...
Well it is definitely next up for communicating, so hopefully school is not far behind
OH, that's right. Same here. And using the copy paper that transferred to make a worksheet.
A5: PLN = Game Changer! A virtual trampoline creating many jump off points for learning w/ my Ss. https://t.co/JU7yABThkD
The problem I have with it, is that it wasn't built to be permanent.
A5) Being a connected educator means that 1:1 resources don't even once you leave the school
A5: My PLN turbo-charged professional growth! I felt less isolated & met amazing Ts who implement masterfully!
A5: PLNs are definitely game changers. I wouldn't still be teaching if it weren't for my discovery of PLN 4 yrs ago.
What level of communication though?
Temporary & lack of writing skills.
Being a connected edu is having access to PD anytime anywhere. Ideas, suggestions, posts all ripe for the picking (thinking)
So…can you share with us what kept you learning about ? Is it an effect of ? Or?
A5: PLN is awesome. So many new connections to make. New people and new ideas to better your teaching.
there is not an easy way to track snaps.
A5: priceless! only place you can learn w/ other Ts globally on literally any topic or issue
and as a teacher getting what I need when I need it. not when someone says i need it https://t.co/gYxmtvISNp
Being a connected edu is having access to PD anytime anywhere. Ideas, suggestions, posts all ripe for the picking (thinking)
Engaging in tech doesnt always have to equate to decrease in "Writing skills"
My infamous phrase: I thought I was crazy. But my PLN showed me that I was just in the wrong asylum. https://t.co/rbAd0koFAW
A5: My PLN turbo-charged professional growth! I felt less isolated & met amazing Ts who implement masterfully!
A5: twitter chats like this one, and chats keep me growing as an educator. I LOVE my job!
A5: I didn't get really connected until worked in a 1:1 ipad school with Twitter mostly, wish had to start.
A5.2 potential is growth...tweet chats are like & tweeps challenge me to grow w/ every chat
It was my desire to not be bored. I HATE to be bored, so I am always looking for ways to engage Ss and me.
A5: I like both the short term (I need an app that...) AND long term (I'm building a Makerspace & need advice...) part of my PLN
Agreed on that. I just think Instagram & the ability to search by tags makes them more useable
True, our TCs promote a balance of analog & digital tools to empower Ss with writing.
agreed! nice to connect to others who understand & can help you grow, removes the feeling of an island of 1
One of my favorite Werner-isms! Truth! https://t.co/nfBcvCymQr
My infamous phrase: I thought I was crazy. But my PLN showed me that I was just in the wrong asylum. https://t.co/rbAd0koFAW

The face-to-face collaborations born from the virtual PLN are special & very valuable.
My pln helped me grow in ways I never expected. I'm playing with & other devices. iPad class flourishes due to them
AND being a mother of a son with autism (who always wanted to know why) helped my desire too.
for tonight's broad audience, would you define “TCs”?
Love when I get to conferences and have the opportunity to truly connect with PLN face-to-face
PLNpower is feeding the fire for our redesign. Ideas for a maker space & LLC start from a tidbit gathered from another edu.
Agree - perhaps not grammatically correct writing, but writing practice nonetheless. https://t.co/UabH47mHR1
Engaging in tech doesnt always have to equate to decrease in "Writing skills"
I agree. I love meeting peeps of my PLNs in person. It's like meeting a family member you haven't seen in years.
homerun answer! bet could find a nice animation for this
Note: Billy is talking abt his special connection to me created via PLN but now via magnetic forces. https://t.co/uSptVbm9js
The face-to-face collaborations born from the virtual PLN are special & very valuable.
YES! Meeting was like a family reunion with cousins I had never met before but already loved! https://t.co/wzTHYY4m5d
Love when I get to conferences and have the opportunity to truly connect with PLN face-to-face
Q6: Teaching is rewarding, hard work - and fun! What are you most amped up about re: next unit/lesson/student teaching?
me too!! connection is strengthened & feel like you're meeting a life long friend!
Ditto. I'm thinking we're going to need a tweet-up at ISTE this summer.
A6: I've pitched awesome tech electives for next year - Broadcast Journalism & Digital Literacy ! Exciting!
TCs are Teaching Consultants, classroom teachers/mentors that promote quality instruction & passion for writing
I just described it as a family reunion too. I remember meeting 1st time. We hugged!
A6: working w/ Ts to use VR in class w/ Ss in low socio economic area,Ss reactions are heart warming b/c most have never left TN
My lesson here is choose a profile pic wisely: I always have to wear a hat to be recognized.
You HAVE to connect w/ to talk Broadcast Journalism. https://t.co/opMfU3hCYR
A6: I've pitched awesome tech electives for next year - Broadcast Journalism & Digital Literacy ! Exciting!
Really excited about next PLC on Student Centered Classrooms. Encouraging Ts to create more engaged lessons
A6: I am getting jazzed up for the projects coming up soon. Love my Ss puppet creations.
My bear hug nearly knocked off her feet at Philly. My long lost twin sis!
A6: I have a student teacher in the fall. I can't wait to show them everything. Teach them the ropes, etc.
I will! We want to build this program with A-game!
A6 Working on machine unit now. Genius Hour is around the corner. Very excited to see what Ss pitch. Lots of hands on!
A6 - my Ss have felt empowered during this differentiated self-paced mastery learning unit ... Looking to create another
I had a hat on in an earlier profile pic. PLN members all said "The hat! Where's the hat?"
World's largest Whack-A-Mole game!
A6 we have long projects that are personalized. I like to see what students come up with
again Obi Wan rules & is the MVP!
That's awesome, Mike. Are you ?
Can't wait to give devices to a new group of Ss. They come up with amazing projects in the end. Working on gamifying digcit
Clark Kent v. Superman effect. I share this when teaching Twitter to Ts. Don’t choose forever winter!
Sharing is caring. Whether a PST or in the classroom, what will you take back to other PSTs or your building?
Before turning in take a peek at this week's . Qs generated by to focus on PD.
Was amazing to meet I am sure I screamed/cheered/laughed obnoxiously. 😄 https://t.co/cBgViwa4mO
My bear hug nearly knocked off her feet at Philly. My long lost twin sis!
Melissa, I TOTALLY want see that! Need a new angle on DigCit for Libr "orientation". https://t.co/RZCIIjElaU
Can't wait to give devices to a new group of Ss. They come up with amazing projects in the end. Working on gamifying digcit
I'll follow-up w/tonight's crew & colleagues who have solicited some advice! I need to blog, too!
: Connect! Follow some new PSTs, offer up class visits, try to help how I can.
: get out there, get involved, don't freak out, manage your time, and know your limits.
