  • griffinjen07 Nov 19 @ 11:05 PM EST
A1: the outside forces, things Ss deal with day to day and often have no control of. Housing, parental involvement, poverty etc. If the student's basic needs are not being met - learning is hindered. #CaEdChat

Q1 What else do we need to consider beyond reading, writing, and math to ensure that we are addressing the whole child? #caedchat
  • principledlady Nov 19 @ 11:07 PM EST

  • MrsBarnett_Tchr Nov 19 @ 11:07 PM EST
A1: My 3rds need classroom survival skills (how to be a S) - We have small group pull-out for Ss to learn how to express themselves and ask for help. #caedchat
  • IfrahA_Mohamed Nov 19 @ 11:08 PM EST

A1 part 2 Too many Ss only see themselves in school as how well they do in R, W, and M. But they are so much more than that! #caedchat
  • frodobirdy Nov 19 @ 11:08 PM EST
A1 - definitely critical thinking skills - important for so many subjects as well as for life. #caedchat

A1: The whole realm of social-emotional learning has to be addressed in addition to academics in order to address the whole child. #caedchat #sel
    In reply to @AppEducationFox
  • christinekdixon Nov 19 @ 11:09 PM EST
A1: We are passionate about infusing #STEAM throughout our TK-8 school, w/ engineering & #designthinking where Ss are using ALL above (R, W, & math) to design prototypes to solve problems in all content areas #caedchat #makerspace #MakerEd
  • principledlady Nov 19 @ 11:09 PM EST
A1: We also need to plan opportunities for our Ss that expose them to new experiences in order to ignite their passion #caedchat
  • AppEducationFox - Moderator Nov 19 @ 11:09 PM EST
Exactly. So many students are not successful in school and equate that with self-worth. They are so much more than that! #caedchat

  • AppEducationFox - Moderator Nov 19 @ 11:11 PM EST
And just as important to look at all of their Abilities! So many students have talents outside the realm of R, W, and M. Those should be honored in school as well. #caedchat
    In reply to @mel_jones19
  • AppEducationFox - Moderator Nov 19 @ 11:12 PM EST

  • griffinjen07 Nov 19 @ 11:13 PM EST
A2 I think of enchichment as a a way to continue to build and retain skills taught/learned. I like to incorporate @readtheory or @noredink to give students a chance to continue to learn and practice the skills wr have gone over!! #CaEdChat

Q2 What types of activities/lessons do you consider enrichment? #caedchat
  • KristinOropeza Nov 19 @ 11:14 PM EST
A1: In our SPED classroom, we try to focus on every day skills like being courteous, using our manners (please and thank you), and appropriate conversation skills with peers. #caedchat
  • principledlady Nov 19 @ 11:15 PM EST
A2: Any edifying experience that would otherwise be unavailable to a student. #caedchat
  • jkloczko Nov 19 @ 11:15 PM EST
A2 I think abt enrichment w/ in school day as part of classroom, elective type things but also just amazing PBL/experiences all day #caedchat
  • MrsBarnett_Tchr Nov 19 @ 11:16 PM EST
A2: Enrichment is being able to make real life connections to learning. Last year, I brought back snow for a science lesson on solids, liquids, gas. Most of my 3rds have never seen snow! #caedchat
  • itzely_arzate Nov 19 @ 11:16 PM EST
Hello! My name is Itzely and I'm a future educator attending SJSU! #caedchat
  • CampsCrusaders Nov 19 @ 11:16 PM EST
A2 Genius Hour, MakerSpace, Book Clubs, anything that's open ended where the sky is the limit for those Ss to push themselves #caedchat
  • Scotteach Nov 19 @ 11:16 PM EST
A1 - Building character is vital, beyond that developing ourselves at true content experts & also looking at current research data on memory & learning can help us see areas where we can enrich a student's education, we can't just assume "one-size fits all enrichment" #caedchat
  • mathkaveli Nov 19 @ 11:16 PM EST
One of the best things we should do for Ss is to teach them those social skills so they can be functional adults #caedchat
    In reply to @KristinOropeza
  • principledlady Nov 19 @ 11:16 PM EST
A2: Any opportunity for Ss to use information, resources and or tools in a innovative way. #caedchat
  • AppEducationFox - Moderator Nov 19 @ 11:16 PM EST
A2 An activity or lesson that reaches beyond standards to create an experience a child may have never had before. #caedchat
  • jkloczko Nov 19 @ 11:16 PM EST
A2 I also think integrated/thematic units that immerse kids in learning experiences are amazing @ronclarkacademy #caedchat
  • morgetron Nov 19 @ 11:16 PM EST
A2. Enrichment = Experience. Many times it's something you present as optional, and students choose to do it because they are interested in it. #caedchat
  • NowaTechie Nov 19 @ 11:17 PM EST
    Our 5th graders love #geniushour #caedchat
    In reply to @CampsCrusaders
  • elena_SF_CA Nov 19 @ 11:17 PM EST
A2: Authentic enrichment should take learned lessons or units to a more complex level. Enrichment shouldn’t just be “more” work for a bright kid who finishes fast. #caedchat
  • whispermode Nov 19 @ 11:17 PM EST
A1: The engagement of Ss come from their voice and choice. The classroom that focuses on the three Rs has lost focus on the S. A class full of critique, activism and empathy may be a good place to start. #caedchat #PBL #rm222 #SMETigerWay
  • CHansenCA Nov 19 @ 11:17 PM EST
A2 Experiences that bring out curiosity and develop new interests. Everything from programming to art #caedchat
  • frodobirdy Nov 19 @ 11:17 PM EST
A2 - Elective options, or projects that allow S's to innovate and be creative with content or resources #caedchat
  • jkloczko Nov 19 @ 11:18 PM EST
A2 and should be available to all kids, not just a small group #caedchat
  • MrsBarnett_Tchr Nov 19 @ 11:18 PM EST
Yes...I have many Ss who can not connect to certain lessons and I have to find a way to make it relevant. #caedchat
    In reply to @AppEducationFox
  • mrosvhs Nov 19 @ 11:18 PM EST
A2: when my Ss teach me something new, that enriches all classes I teach. Give Ss the time to revise, redo, retest, resubmit #caedchat
  • CAedchat Nov 19 @ 11:18 PM EST
Q3 Is there a difference between enrichment and extension tasks? If so, what makes them different? #caedchat
  • AppEducationFox - Moderator Nov 19 @ 11:18 PM EST
Q3 Is there a difference between enrichment and extension tasks? If so, what makes them different? #caedchat
  • ashleydhart Nov 19 @ 11:18 PM EST
A2: Active learning strategies that encourage students to go above and beyond. Enrinchment should immerse students in experiences that aren't usually readily available. #caedchat
  • IfrahA_Mohamed Nov 19 @ 11:19 PM EST
A2 An enrichment activities can be what the students are interested in (elective classes) #caedchat
  • AppEducationFox - Moderator Nov 19 @ 11:19 PM EST
Agree! I remember watching the GATE kids leave the class for enrichment when I was a kid for. It felt EXTREMELY unfair to me. #caedchat
    In reply to @jkloczko
  • jkloczko Nov 19 @ 11:19 PM EST
A3 I see extension as students going in depth or beyond when they have mastered something (creative) #caedchat
  • CampsCrusaders Nov 19 @ 11:19 PM EST
A3: Extension-current lesson/activity going furtuer, Enrichment- new activity for current lesson created to challenge students. #caedchat
  • CHansenCA Nov 19 @ 11:19 PM EST
A3 I think of enrichment as something new to explore whereas extension is adding more to an existing lesson Semantics? #caedchat
  • mathkaveli Nov 19 @ 11:19 PM EST
Why does it seem it’s always about being reactive instead of proactive #caedchat
    In reply to @frodobirdy
  • rickeducation Nov 19 @ 11:19 PM EST
A2: Enrichment includes anything that might be implied by standards, but goes beyond simple mastery. Enrichment is what rounds out a lesson into 3D, or humanizes learning. That means art, music, physical exploration, anything purely creative, experimental social games #caedchat
    In reply to @AppEducationFox
  • TheTechRabbi Nov 19 @ 11:20 PM EST
A1: Enrichment makes something more meaningful, substantial, or rewarding. I feel the Ts role is to help provide the medium and the content should be 💯 up to the Ss. #caedchat
  • KristinOropeza Nov 19 @ 11:20 PM EST
A2: Enrichment takes Ss beyond the standards. We do STEM projects every month, go on CBI field trips, and have meals together for the major holidays. Enrichment engages, inspires, and motivates. #caedchat
  • griffinjen07 Nov 19 @ 11:20 PM EST
A3: I think there is a HUGE difference between Enrichment and Extension. I feel like Extension goes deeper and Enrichment provides added layers of support. #CaEdChat
  • christinekdixon Nov 19 @ 11:20 PM EST
A2 Enrichment is giving, allowing, and encouraging student CHOICE. I think in the past enrichment was for early finishers or GATE Ss. Now I strongly believe enrichment should be embedded in the lesson for ALL Ss w theme of #proofoflearning. Let them show you! #caedchat
  • TheTechRabbi Nov 19 @ 11:20 PM EST
A2: Enrichment makes something more meaningful, substantial, or rewarding. I feel the Ts role is to help provide the medium and the content should be 💯 up to the Ss. #caedchat
  • principledlady Nov 19 @ 11:20 PM EST
A3: ? Extensions provide opportunities that help Ss further practice/synthesize their learning Enrichments allow Ss 2 go deeper #caedchat
  • AppEducationFox - Moderator Nov 19 @ 11:20 PM EST
Right?! It should be the driving force rather than the ending point. That is why I love PBL #caedchat
    In reply to @mathkaveli, @frodobirdy
  • IfrahA_Mohamed Nov 19 @ 11:21 PM EST
A3 Extention tasks can be that which builds on a current lesson to bring more understanding. Enrichment can be newer tasks they are interested in #caedchat
  • mathkaveli Nov 19 @ 11:21 PM EST
So glad to have you here. Let’s get better together #caedchat
    In reply to @itzely_arzate
  • howie_hua Nov 19 @ 11:21 PM EST
A3: I may be wrong, but I see enrichment as a task that sparks (or stems from) curiosity while extensions go deeper into the topic. #caedchat
  • TheTechRabbi Nov 19 @ 11:21 PM EST
A3: Enrichment is about value. If the extension task doesn’t do that then don’t call it enrichment. Nothing wrong with either. #caedchat
  • whispermode Nov 19 @ 11:21 PM EST
A2: shouldn’t it all be enrichment? To enrich a S’s education you need to make, whatever it is, relevant to them. Products completed should also enrich the audience, not just the S. #caedchat #rm222 #SMETigerWay
  • AppEducationFox - Moderator Nov 19 @ 11:22 PM EST
A3 Enrichment is about a new experience that enriches the lives of children after having been part of it. It has choice. #caedchat
  • mathkaveli Nov 19 @ 11:22 PM EST
    Boom! #caedchat
    In reply to @AppEducationFox, @frodobirdy
  • ashleydhart Nov 19 @ 11:22 PM EST
A3: I feel like enrichment is more of a rounded approach to teaching, taking a task further than just mastering a subject like reading or writing. #caedchat
  • jkloczko Nov 19 @ 11:22 PM EST
A3 I think extension can also be about differentiation w/ in a unit skill-wise. #caedchat
  • KristinOropeza Nov 19 @ 11:23 PM EST
A3: Extension activities extend on what’s being taught in curriculum and standards. Enrichment allows students to explore and create. #caedchat
  • HowardKiyuna Nov 19 @ 11:23 PM EST
Enrichment vs tinkering? Any difference? #caedchat
  • mathkaveli Nov 19 @ 11:23 PM EST
    Hmm interesting #caedchat
    In reply to @ashleydhart
  • rickeducation Nov 19 @ 11:23 PM EST
A3: Enrichment and extension can overlap a great deal. Extension tasks carry forth a leaning objective into 'application' or 'evaluation.' Enrichment often implies more in the 'create' domain. #caedchat
    In reply to @CAedchat
  • MrsBarnett_Tchr Nov 19 @ 11:23 PM EST
Agreed...in 3rd there are some Ss I provide an extension activity to while I work with others to help them master a concept. #caedchat

This is critical. Many Ss don’t know what they are missing- exposing their mind to the possibilities is so important. #rm222 #caedchat
    In reply to @principledlady
  • Scotteach Nov 19 @ 11:24 PM EST
A2 - Enrichment is making something more valuable & can be done with math, reading or any subject. I approach enrichment with the simple question "How is this making __ (math, reading, etc) more valuable for my Ss?" I want them to have wealth they can spend later #caedchat
  • mathkaveli Nov 19 @ 11:24 PM EST
Hmmm interesting I see that #caedchat
    In reply to @KristinOropeza
  • elena_SF_CA Nov 19 @ 11:24 PM EST
A2: Maybe extensions expand or further develop ideas from lesson/unit w/n that subject matter, but enrichment could be more creative & student driven, maybe a question the student wants to answer or an experiment they want to try. #caedchat #geniushour

    In reply to @HowardKiyuna
  • TheTechRabbi Nov 19 @ 11:25 PM EST

A6. Aside from $$$ ... time/schedule. We are trapped in an archaic 7 period schedule. We are working on changing this, but I grow impatient! #caedchat
  • AppEducationFox - Moderator Nov 19 @ 11:50 PM EST
A6 A school needs to connect what they are doing to some kind of vision. Most school vision statements talk about well-rounded students who make a difference, yet their programs/schedules say otherwise. #caedchat

A6: At our school we have staff & community support for providing enrichment opportunities, but if parents do not want their children to join in, there’s not much we can do, even if it’s a true passion of the child. We can try & encourage, but that’s not always enough. #caedchat

  • CampsCrusaders Nov 19 @ 11:54 PM EST
A7: Teamwork in your grade level and vertical alignment across the grade levels in your school. Also there should be PD for Enrichment. There is so much focused on Intervention that I feel we are left on our own when it comes to enrichment. #caedchat

Q7 Enrichment is for EVERYONE. It is not for a select few with a "Gifted" label. It is not to be taken away from Ss who are struggling in academic areas or learning English as a 2nd lang. Advocate for ALL Ss. #caedchat

A7: first we need to understand that equity means given people what is needed when it is needed. Once this happens, we are more likely to move beyond canned curriculum and one size fits all staff development and create a place where enrichment is the norm #caedchat
  • elena_SF_CA Nov 19 @ 11:56 PM EST
Enrichment activities should come with ‘scholarship’ options or other incentives to motivate & allow all students to join in regardless of socio-economic restraints. Also, whenever possible, teachers need to enrich curriculum as part of their ‘ordinary’ day. #caedchat

  • whispermode Nov 19 @ 11:58 PM EST
Indeed. However unless we acknowledge that is is backward, then we perpetuate the idea that enrichment can be provided in a vacuum- enrichment starts from Ts in classrooms and letting the idea spread. It takes admin acceptance however. #rm222 #caedchat
