#CAEdChat: Increasing girls' education goes beyond just getting them into school. We can do more to increase long-term literacy, income, & equality for girls around the world: https://t.co/aIrQxlbhi4#GlobalEd
Hey #caedchat - Michael Cohen aka The Tech Rabbi. Traveling the country conjuring creative capacity for Ts and Ss. Soon to be joining a school as a Director of Innovation.
Excited to be here! No matter HOW much wanted to participate in twitter chats, tonight is 1st twitter chat EVER b/c vacay gives me more time w my babies :) #caedchat
A1: the outside forces, things Ss deal with day to day and often have no control of. Housing, parental involvement, poverty etc. If the student's basic needs are not being met - learning is hindered. #CaEdChat
A1: My 3rds need classroom survival skills (how to be a S) - We have small group pull-out for Ss to learn how to express themselves and ask for help. #caedchat
A1: We are passionate about infusing #STEAM throughout our TK-8 school, w/ engineering & #designthinking where Ss are using ALL above (R, W, & math) to design prototypes to solve problems in all content areas #caedchat#makerspace#MakerEd
Elena from SF area, shamelessly trying to get this K teacher’s Donors Choose to fund, but there’s less than an hour left before it’s taken down. 🤷🏼♀️ #caedchat
A1: Diversity- cultural, religious, learning styles, etc. etc. Kindness and respect. Fostering an environment that is inclusive to all students and taking outside forces into consideration. #caedchat
And just as important to look at all of their Abilities! So many students have talents outside the realm of R, W, and M. Those should be honored in school as well. #caedchat
A2 I think of enchichment as a a way to continue to build and retain skills taught/learned. I like to incorporate @readtheory or @noredink to give students a chance to continue to learn and practice the skills wr have gone over!! #CaEdChat
A1: In our SPED classroom, we try to focus on every day skills like being courteous, using our manners (please and thank you), and appropriate conversation skills with peers. #caedchat
A2: Enrichment is being able to make real life connections to learning. Last year, I brought back snow for a science lesson on solids, liquids, gas. Most of my 3rds have never seen snow! #caedchat
A1 - Building character is vital, beyond that developing ourselves at true content experts & also looking at current research data on memory & learning can help us see areas where we can enrich a student's education, we can't just assume "one-size fits all enrichment" #caedchat
A2. Enrichment = Experience. Many times it's something you present as optional, and students choose to do it because they are interested in it. #caedchat
A2: Authentic enrichment should take learned lessons or units to a more complex level. Enrichment shouldn’t just be “more” work for a bright kid who finishes fast. #caedchat
A1: The engagement of Ss come from their voice and choice. The classroom that focuses on the three Rs has lost focus on the S. A class full of critique, activism and empathy may be a good place to start. #caedchat#PBL#rm222#SMETigerWay
A2: Active learning strategies that encourage students to go above and beyond. Enrinchment should immerse students in experiences that aren't usually readily available. #caedchat
A2: Enrichment includes anything that might be implied by standards, but goes beyond simple mastery. Enrichment is what rounds out a lesson into 3D, or humanizes learning. That means art, music, physical exploration, anything purely creative, experimental social games #caedchat
A1: Enrichment makes something more meaningful, substantial, or rewarding. I feel the Ts role is to help provide the medium and the content should be 💯 up to the Ss.
#caedchat
A2: Enrichment takes Ss beyond the standards. We do STEM projects every month, go on CBI field trips, and have meals together for the major holidays. Enrichment engages, inspires, and motivates. #caedchat
A3: I think there is a HUGE difference between Enrichment and Extension. I feel like Extension goes deeper and Enrichment provides added layers of support. #CaEdChat
A2 Enrichment is giving, allowing, and encouraging student CHOICE. I think in the past enrichment was for early finishers or GATE Ss. Now I strongly believe enrichment should be embedded in the lesson for ALL Ss w theme of #proofoflearning. Let them show you! #caedchat
A2: Enrichment makes something more meaningful, substantial, or rewarding. I feel the Ts role is to help provide the medium and the content should be 💯 up to the Ss.
#caedchat
A3 Extention tasks can be that which builds on a current lesson to bring more understanding. Enrichment can be newer tasks they are interested in #caedchat
A2: shouldn’t it all be enrichment? To enrich a S’s education you need to make, whatever it is, relevant to them. Products completed should also enrich the audience, not just the S. #caedchat#rm222#SMETigerWay
A3: I feel like enrichment is more of a rounded approach to teaching, taking a task further than just mastering a subject like reading or writing. #caedchat
A3: Enrichment and extension can overlap a great deal. Extension tasks carry forth a leaning objective into 'application' or 'evaluation.' Enrichment often implies more in the 'create' domain. #caedchat
Q4 @SirKenRobinson’s book “Finding Your Element”makes the claim that once you discover your passion, it changes everything. Share your thoughts about this and its implications for education. #caedchat
Q4 @SirKenRobinson’s book “Finding Your Element”makes the claim that once you discover your passion, it changes everything. Share your thoughts about this and its implications for education. #caedchat
A2 - Enrichment is making something more valuable & can be done with math, reading or any subject. I approach enrichment with the simple question "How is this making __ (math, reading, etc) more valuable for my Ss?" I want them to have wealth they can spend later #caedchat
A2: Maybe extensions expand or further develop ideas from lesson/unit w/n that subject matter, but enrichment could be more creative & student driven, maybe a question the student wants to answer or an experiment they want to try. #caedchat#geniushour
What if the kids hate the task? Is it enrichment in theory but not in practice. I Wish enrichment had nothing to do with standards and just with what they’re passionate about. #caedchat
Q4 @SirKenRobinson’s book “Finding Your Element”makes the claim that once you discover your passion, it changes everything. Share your thoughts about this and its implications for education. #caedchat
A1: Having a diverse classroom and creating a safe space for students is important. Getting to know your students to understand what each student needs is essential. #caedchat
Q4 I have witnessed @SirKenRobinson's claim first hand at @Quantum_Academy. Our school-wide enrichment program has helped Ss discover new interests. See survey... #caedchat
A4: My Ss say it's obvious whether Ts are passionate or not. I know positivity breeds positivity but could the same thing be said about passion? #caedchat
A4: Passion is so important. Ss need to develop their interests and loves and be able to share that w/ peers. They in turn become Ts of their own craft and can inspire others. #caedchat
A4: Well, for 5th graders I have mixed feelings about this because many don’t even know yet what’s out there that might become a passion. When I taught middle, I saw kids who had strong interests in certain topics. In fifth, I try to provide a buffet. #caedchat
A4 Totally agree!Opening up about my passion about geeky stuff (comics, anime) allowed me to accept myself and how unique I was.Once I tied this into my classroom, teaching has been so much fun. I connect with my kids on a different level, we all have such a great time! #caedchat
I wish as educators we could give every student the chance to discover their passion(s). Although we may not be able to reach everyone, if we can make an impact on some Ss by connecting them to more opportunities, that's an amazing thing! #caedchat
A4: School doesn’t teach passion because it’s not something that can be standardized. My whole mission in #education is to help Ss find their passion and support their growth and success beyond academics. #caedchat
A4: Passion is an intrinsic motivator. We naturally work harder and attempt to do well in the areas that we are passionate about. Educators have the honor of providing ways for students to discover their passions #caedchat
A4: #caedchat Passion is the fuel for all innovation and progress. But to expect learners to display the same kind of passion in every subject during an 8 hour schedule is unrealistic. I often wonder how passion for learning is diff. from passion for learning more about 1 field.
A4: In maker sessions and code sessions I expect to see 2-3 (out of 12) take off and work outside of class. Other times Sa who struggle academically shine. #caedchat
A4 kinda~Maybe I am crazy but shouldn’t we start Ss learning with enrichment, like @jcorippo says turn blooms over let them create and produce. We can’t keep doing what we’re doing or we’ll end obsolete in a generation #caedchat
A4 I had a SPED autism Ss that did a #geniushour on the history of STAPLERS! His SPED T and I were like, what? But he did an amazing job and presented to a small group of kids who loved it. Made him feel so good! #caedchat
Balance is key. We can drill and kill all day long. But allowing a part of the day where students choose it just as important. There has to be a love of something related to school. For me it was art class. #caedchat
Totally agree- That’s why the idea of enrichment is dated. Shouldn’t all work a Ss is asked to do, or chooses to do (see what I did there), be enriching? What’s the point otherwise? #caedchat#rm222
A2: Enrichment activities can be activities that have students learn about the world outside of school. Teaching them to take what they learn and incorporate it into the outside world. #caedchat
Q4 @SirKenRobinson’s book “Finding Your Element”makes the claim that once you discover your passion, it changes everything. Share your thoughts about this and its implications for education. #caedchat
#caedchat True. Mine was Eng. literature but yes. Finding that ounce of "this is where I feel most myself" in the bazaar of concepts as it were is critical. But letting Ss realize that about themselves is the tricky part.
A4. Finding a passion can change everything (for the better) as Sir Ken says, but it's important for young people to know that it's okay if they haven't discovered one yet. #caedchat
You were lucky it was something that was mandatory in school. Think about the artists, the craftsman, the performers who often their talents are not valued in school. #caedchat
(1) Personally, I believe if we want to discover student’s interests & passions, there has to be both opportunities to try new things as well as opportunities to share out their questions & curiosities. #caedchat
#caedchat Hear you. But lot of that is changing. Specially in IB schools where I currently am. Ss get exposed to a lot of chances where they explore, experiment and find their way. Creating the right environment for such thinking is essential.
A5: Our district has a GATE program that selected Ss attend once a week. In my class we do a lot of PBL, creating, and researching so that they can continue challenging themselves. #caedchat
A5 My school has lots of opportunities for exploring passions. My previous school had explore classes, but the Ts didn't always make them fun exploration. T's attitude is most important in that kind of class. #caedchat
A3: Extension is expanding on ideas from your lesson. Enrichment is something that students can learn and enjoy and hopefully use in other areas. #caedchat
(2) Maybe this doesn’t look like a “Program” but instead it’s a place to write questions or share ideas at the end of a unit test or an interest survey students complete throughout the year or an anonymous box to add ideas or topics kids want to learn more about. #caedchat
A5 The goal of enrichment is in everyday learning through PBL. But @Quantum_Academy we have choice based classes called Explore and Elements. #caedchat
A5 I currently do not teach, but I would I would think enrichment in schools would be having a range of elective classes for students to choose from if able #caedchat
A5 cont. Explore classes allow our students to test out and try things in a 2 week class. Elements allows students to dive deeper into topics for 4-6 weeks. #caedchat
#caedchat A5: In the IB a lot of that is embedded into the curriculum. With the CAS and service projects, the extended essays, the TOK profiles and dozens of events annually where Ss participate a sense of global citizenship emerges. It is hard work. Blurry at times. But helps.
A5: At our school, we haven’t *yet* been able to provide official enrichment opportunities beyond individual classrooms. But I’m trying to get a student-published newsletter and/or yearbook going. Wanna join @MrsBarnett_Tchr? #caedchat
Totally agree. However, unfortunately I think there are more walled gardens than not. I’m all about breaking down those walls 🙃 #caedchat#pinkfloyd#rm222
A5: I make sure every student gets to experience the benifits of enrichment, not just the Ss that are at grade level standard or finish early #caedchat
The T I assist with encourages her 2nd graders to do a lot of creative projects that allow a lot of freedom to meet the unique needs of each student in her classroom. Although they aren't official programs, she incorporates them into the curriculum #caedchat
A5: We have a push for CTE classes. I teach Alg 2 and Geo hybrid comp prog. Next year Alg 1 w/ prog too. We also have Robotics club, HOSA, Biotech, Business, CERT open AP access, and more. #caedchat

A5: At our school currently, the enrichment choices are mainly made by the families. We have band, art & computer enrichment activities & classes, some during & some after school, but without parent support, a student loses out. #caedchat
A5 @Quantum_Academy we want all of our students to develop these competencies. We help them do this through a choice based enrichment program where 100% of our Ss participate. #caedchat
It is about enriching the learning experience. Many schools still do not provide students any choice in their day. We have to start somewhere... #caedchat
As a brand new baby school Double Peak School will grow in enrichment & after school opportunities. Currently running 5th-8th grade free Lego EV3 Robotics club- Last year 4 GATE Ss only, this year squashed quickly due 2 belief of inequity #comeonecomeall#caedchat
Yes! So important to make sure all kids get the enrichment. I’m so tired of seeing struggling Ss get remedial education while others get enrichment. #caedchat
YES! It makes more sense to start a fire with a big 💥... not little sparks here and there. Make it go boom and the fire will more likely stay lit on its own. #caedchat
A5: Oops, forgot to include my own “enrichment” program at my school... We have an expanding garden that kids get to take part in designing, preparing, planting & harvesting! #plantingfutures#caedchat
A6 In MS, scheduling! If a Ss needs engl/math intervention it's hard to find time for explore classes during school day. But maybe those classes could incorporate Ss passions. #caedchat#priorities
A6 When people think of enrichment, I think they often think of gifted learners or early finishers, but these opportunities should be available to every student. They don't even have to be official programs, just small gestures in the classroom #caedchat
#caedchat Thanks. What doesnt help is some Ts convinced their subject is the one learners really need to know about. ^_^ And if they dont they take it personally. And that adds stress to the learner. Much like being in a real bazaar with everyone vying for our attention.

A6: This touches on problems of providing enrichment. Don't offer enrichment only to GATE Ss (etc in regards to funding) b/c that's where the funds are. Be creative. Include all Ss. #kidsdeserveit#caedchat

A5: Exploration in #rm222@SanMarcosTigers includes making deeper connections with class, family and self. It means digging deeper and not wider. Providing time to understand what Ss know and want to know. #caedchat#pbl
A6: the biggest problem when it comes to enrichment is that admin and teachers don’t understand that it is for everyone. There is a huge difference between differentiating and enriching #caedchat
A6: Not all Ts know how to differentiate instruction to include enrichment. Often Ts are just told to differentiate without being taught HOW. Also, many think that GATE is the only enrichment needed #caedchat

Before I received my classroom I taught dance at an elementary school bc of my background - but I was funded by a grant the school received. All Ss received it as part of a weekly rotation. #caedchat
A6: A core problem schools have to address is accountability. What standards? What assessments or measures will be used? They must explain their goals. Schools are accountable to their local Board and community. It can be tricky. #caedchat
A6 A school needs to connect what they are doing to some kind of vision. Most school vision statements talk about well-rounded students who make a difference, yet their programs/schedules say otherwise. #caedchat
A6: At our school we have staff & community support for providing enrichment opportunities, but if parents do not want their children to join in, there’s not much we can do, even if it’s a true passion of the child. We can try & encourage, but that’s not always enough. #caedchat

A7: Teamwork in your grade level and vertical alignment across the grade levels in your school. Also there should be PD for Enrichment. There is so much focused on Intervention that I feel we are left on our own when it comes to enrichment. #caedchat
Q7 Enrichment is for EVERYONE. It is not for a select few with a "Gifted" label. It is not to be taken away from Ss who are struggling in academic areas or learning English as a 2nd lang. Advocate for ALL Ss. #caedchat
A7 Encouraging creativity & freedom in the classroom. Although some schools lack PD, we can encourage our peers and other educators to get on board with enrichment oppurtunities! Teachers need support too :) #caedchat
A7: first we need to understand that equity means given people what is needed when it is needed. Once this happens, we are more likely to move beyond canned curriculum and one size fits all staff development and create a place where enrichment is the norm #caedchat
Enrichment activities should come with ‘scholarship’ options or other incentives to motivate & allow all students to join in regardless of socio-economic restraints. Also, whenever possible, teachers need to enrich curriculum as part of their ‘ordinary’ day. #caedchat
Hey all Im from Southern California! #Q7 I think we just need to talk to them and see what they need then communicate with the parents and try to do our best to make sure they have whet they need in the classroom to be successful! #caedchat
Indeed. However unless we acknowledge that is is backward, then we perpetuate the idea that enrichment can be provided in a vacuum- enrichment starts from Ts in classrooms and letting the idea spread. It takes admin acceptance however. #rm222#caedchat

Oh, we haven’t harvested much yet, but we’ve created some nice native plant & rose gardens. We have goals, though, to expand our garden to include an orchard & raised beds of veggies! 🌶 🌽 🍅 #caedchat
I just don't want to argue semantics here. It is about enriching the lives of our students. I know we are on the same page about this, friend. :) #caedchat
