Welcome to the , we're one year old this week! Introduce yourself and share your favorite chat topic. https://t.co/trYBGbW3lQ
Happy birthday to us! Happy birthday to us! Happy birthday, ! Happy birthday to us!
Congrats, , on 's one year anniversary! I haven't made it here as often as I'd like. Cathy from NJ, Grade 8 ELA
Hi, Kristin from St. Augustine, FL. Digital Learning Coach for Flagler County Schools. Happy Birthday
Happy chat birthday (is a phrase I never thought I'd use). How is Saint Augustine?
I'm here I'm here! What a beautiful unicorn!
Thanks & howdy! It's getting better here!
Congratulations on one year B-day! πππππ
Thanks, I made it myself! (I did NOT...)
Are these the actual, actual (hand-written) questions? If so, I am VERY impressed :).
A1: Creating by hand connects brain and kinesthetic learning + reduces tech. distractions
It's digital...we have to go to the Googles for it!
A1. Enhanced creativity, gets stuff into muscle memory/
Thanks Todd! And look, - here's the cake!
A1: we are more invested and often the Ss more engaged
I miss YOU! I was hoping to see you in Tampa.
I got 'em off of the archive! :)
A1. Deeper level of authenticity
So sorry to hear it! Feel better soon!
A1: We gain an understanding of how objects really feel, smell, etc. Concrete before abstract
Happy anniversary, ! Robert here from Los Angeles.
because so many senses are being accessed!
ya that Matthew messes things up!
A1: we are role models to our Ss that "creative" can mean many different things
the innovation can promote motivation
A1 easier to inject heart and soul (matt frat, DC, late, waiting for a bus :-)
That was hammered in in my math methods class!
A1 Confidence in what you can really accomplish on your own. Genuine ownership.
Welcome Robert, and thanks!
A1 Realness. Permanence. Direct control over stuff.
A1 Your brain uses a different cognitive process & is more focused on comprehension when you write! https://t.co/Ocy0iidayX
A1 creating by hand just gives it that loving feeling.. (home made cookies asking 2b maid of honour de⦠https://t.co/LQQWkBR9io
A1: Writing by hand slows things down, reduces distraction
A1: perhaps a more "authentic " product that Ss can feel engaged with...proud of...that they can "create" with their own hand. π
A1 I'm always making cards cause I forget to buy them or just can't find one I like for person
Pride becomes visible to all
A1 Even when you copy, it spends more time in your brain. Not as much sticking from a Ctrl-C.
We have more respect when we can see that it took time and control and planning to make something!
Right! It's more intentional -- Ss really focus. Typing increases reliance on tech to do it for them.
She is the queen of gifs!
A2. Technology replaces pedagogy
A2 being able to understand true size and scale is a 22nd century skill
A bit late to the party but, A1: I think handmade makes it more thought out and intentional. Shoes kids value in handmade too.
A2. Crashes, losing creations (if not stored in the cloud--and even if they are sometimes), glitches.
A2: Tech can open doors, but it can also limit access and stymie progress if it is only tool to show learning
A2: Ss limit their creativity by relying solely on digital. Doing things by hand allows Ss to manipulate things by hand. π
A2 Technology too often adds a layer of distance & disconnect that you do not have with conversation or text, paper & pencil.
A2 Tech doesn't work (loses charge by last period), Ss lose fine-motor abilities, lack of engagement b/c Ss r on tech @ home 2!
A2 With writing, Ss "blame" the device for errors. When they handwrite, they own the accountability.
A2. Pitfall of constant use of electronic devices it is increased distance and disconnection and failure to develop empathy
Q2: Tech does not always equal understanding and authenticity.
A2 My kids think tech replaces the need to think. Plagiarism abounds.
Hi friends! Logan just got sick on me so I'm on mommy duty right now. Sorry I'm missing it tonight. Happy 1 year! You rock!!
A1: Reminds me about authenticity, creativity, regrounding, face-to-face, back to 'roots'
A2 most prototypes start out in a physical form and you need to understand how to work with material
A2.1: Like any tool, there are limitations to what tech can do. Ss need to have a wide variety of tools to choose from.
Well said Agreed! https://t.co/p9NHqhzf8Q
A2 With writing, Ss "blame" the device for errors. When they handwrite, they own the accountability.
exactly. Mess can lead to more discovery!
A2: Going all-tech would cheat students of some of the tactile, creative experiences where we pair art & writing
there needs to be a balance and Ss need to be encouraged to access own creativity
A2: not available everywhere, all the time, sometimes technology doesn't work properly
A2: Ss creativity is limited to the capabilities of the tech tool
A2: Taking away the face-to-face element...there's something to be said for 'the human touch'.
Tech should be the means to share information not the sole project
A2 All in moderation, Baby!
A3: any book on differentiation- Tomlinson, etc.
A3: inspires me to keep Sketchnoting.
When things break in the physical realm, workarounds are usually easier.
A3: creating "trunks" of artifacts from Lost Boys of Sudan reading, integration of everything learned
A3: The Daily 5 and "The Sisters".
@ the gym so I'm gonna catch up tonight
A3: DBC books offer quite a variety of options
A3 I find creator/teachers like to be super inspirational, especially in terms of mindset.
A3: when I taught (world history ), Ss read "All Quiet on the Western Front". Ss wrote letters, made models, built things!
A3 I am proudly old school. My Ss put all their notes, drafts, collaborations, inquiries, etc. in a composition notebook.
A3 Genius hour!! Thank you, for your expertise & resources!!!
A2. I'm dysgraphic and never do this, but I appreciate the challenge and the stretch when asked to work in the physical world
Incredible PD opportunity with at the Boothbay Literacy Retreat has had a huge influence on writing in our classrm
Oh gosh - Ideas percolating...
"The gym" is a perfect response to A3!!! πππ
Hi ya'll. Nancy from NC jumping in. A3: HS math book from 1972 with awesome word problems for just about any subject area.
Hi Nancy! Welcome, and that sounds fantastic!

A4. Building stuff, especially if it helps solve a problem, learning new ways to learn, like .
A4: Socratic Seminar discussion keeps learning fresh, student-directed
A4 Inspire, engage, & invest thru choice, creativity, challenge, collaboration, critical thinking, controversy, & connections!
A4:always ask Ss what/how they'd solve a problem, answer a question, research new ideas.Ask Ss to think...&write about it.
A4: Devices are only tools...innovation...setting the heart and mind to discovering the 'new', unearthing what is in 'waiting'.
We use Socratic Seminars frequently; the deep thinking is so rewarding!
A4 Scale up/down or change medium. Write in sidewalk chalk. Do it in clay or K'nex. Make a micro book, 6-word story.
Disassemble a toaster (or other small appliance) after guessing how many components. Then draw reassembly instructions.
I'm here! Tweeting from San Antonio and the conference
A4 Ss become makers/builders. Sketch ideas and design prototypes with recyclables. Or enhance/repurpose e existing objects.
Yes! They need to feel free to take charge of their own learning
A4 Have students make paper Instagram photos of history, or books they're reading, or science concepts. (Thanks Katie K!)
A4 Lots of talk about , but forming ideas, insights, & opinions is creative too! No batteries or plugs required.
A4 toys man all about toys. Check out 's book for ideas and understanding
A4. Take large groups of students for a long. Steve Jobs always talked about how he did his best thinking while walking
A4: kids love to see and explore and exerience. Pictures, manipulatives, building blocks, challenges.
A4 cont: because of Ss at love to take things apart!
Hutch! Welcome to the 1st Birthday Chat!

cardboard is the king of building material
A5 My kids have shared their physical creations with the class and their parents on .
A5. Let technology enhance and highlight the learning that has taken place already
A5: Green screening with can marry handmade and tech very well!
That would be suggestions.....
A5. Use AR to enhance/share information about art projects.
A5: Create photos and movies of hand-made work, publish work online
A5 Publish!!! Create then share with a broader / more authentic audience.
A5: as much as I love tech, still start many things by hand. Like to "see" how it'll look first. Love the tactile 1st!π
A4: I provide PCT (personal choice time)...Ss gravitate to construct with concrete materials, guided by their imaginations.
A5 that is like Katrina (digital) and Nathan (physical) being together
A5 This yr, want to display Ss leaf watercolor writing projects w/ QR codes linked to audio of them reflecting on process
A5: student-created screencasts or videos teaching how to do the hands-on

A5b: Create paper or clay art, then animate it with Stop Motion apps.
No, no! Family first! Thanks for coming!

I just saw you post and had to share. Exactly what my kiddos are working on this week!!!β¦ https://t.co/rFdrQKKJd2
A5 Recorded Socratic Seminars as a visual for guided reflection.
You can also use a backchannel to enhance the conversation and involve more Ss
A5) Written story boards, then use iMovie to create fictional movie
A4 Being a listening ear, empathetic and practices help
Yes! We do this sometimes with inner and outer circles. Great variation to keep all engaged.
I'm game! Please tell me more.

We learned from Hermione, that only works for a bit...
Outsourcing!
Wait, that may actually be a good answer...
