CatholicEdChat is a twitter chat. Topics focus on discussions around educational issues for Catholic Educators and topics beneficial to Catholic Schools. We look forward to continuing to connect Catholic Educators online to discuss education and teaching with faith in our schools. The chat takes place on Saturday mornings. Time 9am EST.
Good morning from very cold La Loche Saskatchewan (-40) where I teach grade 3. I've missed being here, but am looking forward to today's chat. #catholicedchat
John-middle school social studies in NW Iowa, rare wknd off from reffing basketball. Favorite part of #CSW18 was #globalkahoot or my ss reading with our 1st/2nd graders. #CatholicEdChat
I am at a new school this year. We ended our week with a special Gold Book Mass for 2nd grade and presented the @VizAcademy Sisters with their own Gold Book. #CatholicEdChat
Good morning! 4th grade teacher from NJ here! My favorite part of Catholic Schools Week was our amazing STREAM fair designed to address the UN's Sustainable Development Goals! #CatholicEdChat
A1: I'm not sure I can name a best Lent specifically, but I always enjoy when Ss lead Mime or Shadow Stations. I also enjoyed helping to implement Family Service projects at my old school. #CatholicEdChat
A1: best Lent for me was one where I gave up meat. I think it was because I was extremely conscious of the sacrifice and had to plan to make it work, so Lent was always at the forefront of my mind #CatholicEdchat
A1: I think my all time fave was Journey to Jerusalem...we walked and prayed simultaneously. Tracked steps w pedometers donated by local Catholic hospital. Walked the distance from our school to Jerusalem. #CatholicEdChat
I think trying to be more intentional about prayer-quality over quantity-and usually finding a new book to read-I'm going with @BishopBarron and To Light a Fire on the Earth. #catholicedchat
Good Morning #catholicedchat I’m the Director of Admissions at @BMHSMustangs I also serve on the senior admin team. We had a blast in my house with #csw18
@AtchisonSbcs ended CSW18 by celebrating our school and community's fams w a check to Catholic Charities for >$500 that we raised in a penny war to help others "Keep the Lights On" (our theme this yr is Be the Light). We also played Family Feud & took this pic! #CatholicEdChat
A1 my best lent was last year when a friend and I led stations of the cross for children every week at our church. We had a small turnout, but the children & parents who came really liked it. #catholicedchat
A1: My best Lent was during team formation for an ACTS retreat. I was the most focused and fully present in the season. I wish I could repeat that on my own, but I know it takes a village. Maybe the LS at VIZ can come together and focus #CatholicEdChat
A1: my best lent was anytime I got to guide students on the journey! From teaching faith formation to teaching and leading in Catholic schools! We have such a strength in having this annual time to reflect and grow #CatholicEdchat
A1: Also love living stations esp. when students choose song clips from current hit songs that fit w each station - creativity at its finest #CatholicEdChat
A1 One yr I "gave up" my mornings by going on the exercise bike while reading either a spiritual book (I focused on the bio of St. Gianna Molla). My fam also attended Stations of the Cross every Fri that yr. I physically & spiritually felt good that Lent. #catholicedchat
Erin, I would love more info on this activity! We have never done anything like this, and our culminating all school Lenten activity is led by our 5th graders. They would love this! #CatholicEdChat
It was sort-of difficult-and did get some pushback initially-but doing a decade of the rosary each day or some time in adoration in each week. Motivating acts of service in instead of just giving up things #CatholicEdChat
Good morning! Exhausted from a great week filled with fun activities! Highlight of #CSW18: the teacher dance at the talent show! Our students reactions were priceless; check out the video I just posted! 💃🏻🕺🏻 #CatholicEdchat
A1 it’s weird to think of my “best Lent,” but when I was in grad school, I was intentional in my prayer and reflection with my college kids that I worked with and that helped to frame my perspective on Lent now when I am working with younger students, too. #CatholicEdchat
A2 I know it's a lot of work, but getting the whole school on board with a theme, activity and daily actions, I think are the key for our students. #CatholicEdchat
A2 Be intentional to support them-- it's always a priority to make sure students in 3-8 have the opportunity to go to confession as a class family. I encourage teachers to as well #CatholicEdChat
A2: I have been in schools where I feel like there is too much focus on sacrifice for Lent as a negative. I enjoy working with students to understand that our sacrifice can be something that we do to help or for others and THIS is positive. #CatholicEdChat
A2: I’m currently working on reflection books for our students to participate in daily that challenges them to slow down and be present to God’s word throughout Lent. #CatholicEdChat
A2 I think it's impt to be good models for our Ss--talk about what you are giving up for Lent, invite them to Stations of the Cross, talk about the Gospels from Sunday or from Mass that day, etc. #CatholicEdChat
Another highlight from #CSW18 was our seminarian basketball game with the @DioceseofJoliet Jammers! Students were fully engaged. This is my fave picture: 2nd gr Ss meeting their adopt a seminarian! #CatholicEdChat

A2: I think @beingcatholic1is the one who inspired me to this but I really try to set the stage for my Ss in Lent with silence, music & art reflections, etc. Prettysure Mr. Doyle is the one who says "I will set them up for You, You take them the rest of the way." #CatholicEdChat
A2: one of the things we have done in the past was a day in the life of Jesus. Parent vols set up our parish center with "stalls" like Jerusalem would have complete with goats and a mini-temple. Ps dressed up too. #CatholicEdChat
#CatholicEdChat. Good Morning! Grateful for chance to reflect on Lent, but as so often happens I cannot be on my phone now. Will enjoy reading comments later. Hope everyone gets a good rest after #CSW18.
A2: Making Lent truly applicable and meaningful for kids at their level. Leading circle times that allow kids and teachers the chance to “own” their Lenten experience. Being open about what the HS has done for you. #catholicedchat
A2: one of the things we have done in the past was a day in the life of Jesus. Parent vols set up our parish center with "stalls" like Jerusalem would have complete with goats and a mini-temple. Ps dressed up too. #CatholicEdChat
A3: we are blessed with a dedicated formation team on the parish side who invites our students to attend the Mission Talk with a more student-centered discussion during the day. #CatholicEdchat
A3 cont: the formation team polls our parishioners and sees what topic might be most desirable for them in their faith at the moment and the hunt for a guest speaker begins. #CatholicEdChat
A4-6- when the time comes - I'm not going to be much help... Still playing catch up from Csw! Will have to rely on my leadership team for focus. #CatholicEdChat

A2: In the past, “sacrifice” for #Lent for my Ss has been an act that they do, out of complete love for Jesus. Something like, taking this hard reading test without complaining...so their sacrifice for #Lent is not complaining, done out of complete love for Jesus. #CatholicEdChat
A3: yes, it does. They’re not successful IMO. I think it’s due to the fact that the speakers rarely have a reach farther than middle-aged to older adults. Never a draw for families or kids. #catholicedchat
A3 the thing I remember, is the year we did promise cards. One section detached and on it we listed our prayer intentions for our priest to pray for us. The other part was our Lenten commitments. They were folded & kept displayed in the church through the season. #CatholicEdChat
A3 TBH, I don't know if we're having a parish mission this Lent. We did have a nice one to kick off Advent last yr on stewardship, evangelization, & discipleship that was great for fams w/ older children, teachers, & adults #CatholicEdChat
Late for #catholicedchat - do I need a TARDY SLIP? A3: We have done Missions with speakers at church. Speakers and authors who are inspirational. Advertising and sharing with nearby churches make them a success.
This gives me an idea! What speakers are out there for families and kids to participate together? #CatholicEdChat Possibly offer Catechesis of the Good Shepherd nights if you have the program.
A4: yes, our Home&School Spiritual Committee helps to plan our school’s Lenten Mission each year. They bring in a guest speaker, have classroom activities, and always find a new non-profit where we are able to give our almsgiving to. #CatholicEdchat
A4: A couple years we used the bulletin boards to display the Coporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy and then we planned service projects to intentionally connect with them. #CatholicEdChat
A4 I don't know if we have a Lent theme. The parish Mardi Gras celebration was pushed onto our school's plate :/, so we're focused on getting through that, first! If we do have a theme I'm sure it'll somehow be connected to our yr's theme of Be the Light. #CatholicEdChat
A4 the only tie to a theme is our daily devotional that we select. It would be interesting to be intentional to include it in other parts of our day 🤔 #CatholicEdChat
A4: I have never worked in a school where we picked a theme. It seems like such a terrific way to help everyone focus. I would love to brainstorm here for one! Can't wait to hear your ideas. #CatholicEdChat
Sadly, I have to run—off to serve the greater population their Saturday morning Starbucks coffee. I’ll check back later to see more ideas to help guide our students on their Lenten journeys. #CatholicEdchat
#catholicedchat Q2 for a successful Lent we have students write Lenten promises and we share tLenten challenges through our Parent e-mail notifications and on our morning announcements-Lenten challenge: giving up unkindness.
A4: A couple years we used the bulletin boards to display the Coporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy and then we planned service projects to intentionally connect with them. #CatholicEdChat
pre-A6: when I worked at a HS in New York, a group of students helped me design posters of the stations of the cross to look like mid-2000’s iPod billboards with the silhouette and bright-colored background. I’ll search my computer for pictures! #CatholicEdchat
I really think a school wide theme is a great way to have a successful #Lent It helps everyone be intentional and focus. We are all so distracted and pulled in different directions. #CatholicEdchat
A4 New school means I’m unsure about a potential theme, here are some of the resources I am using. Aren’t the peg dolls just the cutest? #CatholicEdChathttps://t.co/WdsHMDHhUF
I think Journey Through Lent with Mercy was great! It was a lot of work but we made footsteps and lined the hallways to the bulletin board. Our footsteps were of living the corporal works or Mercy. #CatholicEdChat
For the past few yrs we have done a living Stations of the Cross, w most of the 8th graders playing the roles of Jesus, Mary, etc. Children are so emotional and touched by that experience. I hope we continue that tradition #CatholicEdChat
A5 my theme is “gratitude” and my students will write 40 thank you notes this Lent- thank you to your mom or friend or teacher or neighbor or coach #catholicedchat
We did something similar. I think it's so meaningful for kids to see that there is so much more to Lent than giving chocolate up. Might be neat to do a flipgrid this year and share what we will be doing hay that way! #catholicedchat
#catholicedchat In Computer class, one class using digital drawing programs to depict the Stations of the Cross and then we make a slide show. We also use some of the images on the Morning Announcements to remind students the days we go to Stations of the Cross.
A5 my theme is “gratitude” and my students will write 40 thank you notes this Lent- thank you to your mom or friend or teacher or neighbor or coach #catholicedchat
A5: our focus will be mindfulness in Lent. Starting out each day with breathing exercises and Lenten meditations. Would love to hear any kid friendly mindfulness techniques/meditations you love! #CatholicEdchat
Gosh, so much going on in February--Lent, Black History Month, Lunar New Year--would love to somehow tie in all of that into one theme! #CatholicEdChat !
A5 my theme is “gratitude” and my students will write 40 thank you notes this Lent- thank you to your mom or friend or teacher or neighbor or coach #catholicedchat
@Flipgrid allows students to share their thinking via video. We use it with iPads and chrome books. This generation seems to love videos- they put so much care into ANYTHING they are recording. Authentic audience for the win! #catholicedchat
In reply to
@MrsAsauer, @BarbInNebraska, @Flipgrid
A5 my Ash Wednesday craft is ctreate a self-portrait and then I paint a cross on the forehead with glue and then sprinkle black sand over it. Ash Wednesday creativity! #catholicedchat

I need to up my game in Instagram. I have kept it kind of for only personal use, but am following more and more educational things. Who are your favorites to follow? #CatholicEdChat
