We're glad you're joining tonight's #octmchat
Let's see who's joining us -
remember to include #octmchat in each of your responses to keep our conversation linked
Just a few reminders to help with the flow of our conversation... we will be using a Q1/A1 format for #octmchat
And... be sure you are seeing the "latest" tweets by clicking on the "latest" tab (rather than the default "top")
Hi, everyone! Jodie Bailey - math coach @HilliardSchools & President-Elect of @ohioctm Had scheduling conflicts the past couple of weeks - so glad to be back for #octmchat tonight!
Take some time to scroll through the A1 responses...
Who's responses were similar to your thinking? Who's responses stretched your thinking?

"Problem posting pushes students into much deeper thinking than most answer getting" (@TracyZager, 2017, p. 146)
We've collected our #noticewonder questions... Question 2 is coming soon #octmchat
Q2: Let's answer your question of... "How many candy hearts are in the box?"
(Act 1 con't: Decide on the question & students make an estimate)
#octmchat
A1 I notice the candy hearts outside the box. I wonder if you’re going to sort them by color. I also wonder if you got them on sale after Valentine’s Day. #octmchat
Q2 I estimate 45 candy hearts are in the box. My students sorted and graphed candy hearts and I remember the colors were not evenly distributed throughout the boxes. Many kids had 10+ of one color and only 1-2 of another. #octmchat
A2: I'll say 23 because I thought 20 seemed a little too low and 25 a little too high. Looks like maybe 5 fit along one side of the box and maybe 4 along the bottom side. But I'm also thinking they could stack inside the box. #octmchat
A2 I think there are around 24 hearts in a box. I estimated three hearts in each row and you could fit 5 rows and two layers which would be 30. However, when you shake a box there is always room so I subtracted two rows (6). 😊 #octmchat
A2: I am thinking about 40. About four will fit on the bottom and 8 rows going up the box will make it 32. Because of what I know about boxed candy I added a few 💜💙💚💛 #octmchat
a3: would love to know exact dimensions of the hearts and box. I could draw a rectangle around the heart and calculate area/volume then compare to same measurements of the box and get close (i hope) #octmchat
Q4: It's time to "Commit to Action"
@TracyZager challenges us with this question "How do we model curiosity as math teachers?" (2017, p. 169).
#octmchat
A4: the 3 acts are great for all levels and makes kids interested. I also do a lot with stories because children like to hear what is happening and become curious especially when it's real life #octmchat
A4 We build curiosity by pursuing student inquiry. Kids asked how long the hallway was so we figured it out. They asked how many kids fit on a bus so we figured it out. #OCTMchat
A4 #octmchat Honestly - stop chasing answers and getting to play with mathematics. Such a treat to watch kids being mathematical and not only trying to perform for us
