Please join us for a weekly conversation about design thinking in K12 education. We will have a variety of moderators with a wide range and depth of design thinking experiences. Each week, we will connect the dots to the design thinking methodology and how it can and will play a bigger role in today’s K12 educational arena.
Im Mary via Atlanta… sadly I dont have Fall TV show I have lucked out on… However I look forward to Dirty John series in November (awesome podcast) #dtk12chat
Cookies just about to go in the oven. Ready for #dtk12chat
A1) No TV in my home, but this fall, since no new Stranger Things, we keep rewatching https://t.co/1UD8zEbxjM
Hi Bonnie from BC. Teaching students in a Socials class this year. I don't own TV and just bought a clock radio...love @cbc &@CBCStephenQuinn #dtk12chat
Talk about serendipity! Just had a conversation yesterday with my colleague about how to start implementing design thinking in to our classes. Trevor from the DC suburbs here: design curious and eager to learn. #dtk12chat
Ha— thanks! We’ve just opened a new school this year so haven’t had much time for chats. But with DT as our school wide lens, I’ve been skimming the hashtag from time to time for inspiration :) #dtk12chat
10th grade Pre-AP ELA class. Our anchor texts are Lord of the Flies, Caesar, 1984, which we use to explore power on an individual, group, & systemic level. We want to try and use DT to have Ss explore how to combat the negative effects power shown in the texts. Advice? #dtk12chat
A1: I explain in same way to both parents & Ss— >DT is a people-centered approach to problem solving, a mindset that involves seeking & acting upon opportunities to improve the world around us #dtk12chat
#dtk12chat Official A1) DT is the application of learning through meaningful problems based on empathy for the user. And we try to have exhibitions to showcase the process whenever possible. And tweets. And local news stories.
Q2 How do you start a #designthinking challenge? Do you plan it all out or trust the process and put simple guide rails to follow? Or maybe you do something else? #dtk12chat
A1 A human-centered approach to learning, creating, and doing through empathy (is my go2 definition) Then I say its about strengthening your empathetic posture to deal with the world around you esp. outside the classroom #dtk12chat#DEEPdt

I’m thinking about having a DT night where parents and students combine to go through the DT process to solve a school or community issue. Parents get a real taste of what we do and how. #dtk12chat
I wonder is there are adults in your school community can share their experiences around this topic “combat the negative effects of power” That to me will present many opportunities of design 4 Ss #dtk12chat
Love this! I teach an hour south of DC. I've never thought about the potential that provides in terms of finding people/parents who work directly for/with the highest systems of power in America. #dtk12chat
#dtk12chat Go with the flow whenever possible and make the most of compartmentalized time if you must. You authentically can't "plan" all the way through...and never should in education.
It is one of my go2s especially when it is around topics such as this… we did it for a Social Justice unit on 4th grade and also thought that the novel The Giver would have many themes Here is my take on Romeo & Juliet https://t.co/QSgu8SaEDS#DEEPdt#dtk12chat
Q4 How do you keep all the post-it notes organized, available for unpacking & synthesizing, & revisits? What do you do with them when its prototyping time? #dtk12chat Also how do you protect & store prototypes b/t class times (so bulky, irregular, & delicate)?
It is students centered building a community of trust, value and embracing challenges together. Developing Social emotional intelligence. #DTK12chat A beautiful graphic

We just did a parent morning coffee meeting and did a design sprint with about 25 parents. They loved it! Great connections to what they’re students are doing in classrooms. #dtk12chat@CampbellCSI
A2: You’ve got to have parameters but the beauty of #designthinking is in the flexibility of the process as well as the diversity of ideas and constraints. #dtk12chat
I hope you connect with @lndeutsch (she is in san carlos) she would be wonderful to talk to esp around the idea of DT as your school wide lens… a #designthinking gem of the West Coast #dtk12chat Thanks for joining and skimming… always welcome
A1: I would mostly describe it as a way to refine and approach a problem, I would often not use the word solve or solution. I am a fan of shifting thinking to #ProcessOverProduct#dtk12chat
A3: We’ve stuck mainly w/quick fire challenges so far... while we technically have all day, 2nd graders stamina is still limited so short sprints are good right now and helping get them in DT mindset #dtk12chat
Tonights Questions? No but that is a great idea… We need to do better Here is a screen shot of them in scratch form- i am randomly grabbing them as the convos flow #dtk12chat
I am SO looking forward to hearing what others do. My stickies are losing their stick and end up everywhere. And while we have a lot of space it somehow still never feels like enough for some of the prototypes #dtk12chat

Q5 How do you provide an opportunity to truly empathize below the surface with Users? Do your students have opportunities to dig deep with users? What are they #dtk12chat
A1) Probably the same for P & S, the process that addresses a real-life challenge based on a human’s need, but for P I explicitly extend it beyond a project & emphasize thinking that goes on backstage We spend a lot of time pushing kids to identify a human user. #dtk12chat
One way to grade a design challenge is to decide what is the takeaway you want foe students at their level. If you want collaboration describe it and call it out when you see it. Create a simple rubric for the aspect you are grading. Stay human centered and engaging! #dtk12chat

I like having the reflect/notice at the core of the process. It’s like the core of the self. As you move through process, check back with self. This connects to DTmindset of “mindful of process” & how well are we navigating ambiguity. #designabilities#mindsetsmatter#dtk12chat

The amazing @KimKriedeman gets her MS students @VIDASHARKS to do this as good as I have seen anyone do it. She is relentless in modeling and devoting time to empathy. Don't Talk about it, be about it! If you want deep empathy other stuff in the day may not get done. #dtk12chat

We talk a lot about importance of empathy and I think reflection should get just as much air time. Without it, I’m not sure the empathy is really happening #dtk12chat

Been doing that one a looong time. I did that challenge on a parent design night. We knew one team had come up with the billion dollar idea and prototype. Now @comcast offers the feature those parents uncovered the need 4 at our design night! #empathy2action#dtk12chat

A6 mastery grading & iterative assessment works great - in combination with reflection and self-assessment. Asking Ss to engage in tasks that make a contribution to their worlds (and gauge their impact) is cool too! #dtk12chat
We are almost done I will STOP of Question 8 ( i just rolled Q6) Q6
How do you "GRADE" #designthinking challenge/learning? Also, what Formative Assessments do you utilize during the DT process? #dtk12chat
Biedwalk... background news story on 29 year anniversary of Lona Prieta Eathquake of ‘89. I lived in Santa Cruz at the time. very near epicenter. Rich with design opportunities back then. While downtown collapsed. Moved into tents/yurts. #dtk12chat#history#quakeof89
#dtk12chat A6) Ss self assess the process- no grade. Summative assessment= performance of understanding. Formative assessment is naturally built in throughout. Authentic feedback from peers, industry experts, teachers is essential.

Failure resumes, pre-mortems / Headlines from the Future to predict what good work looks like in advance... peer review. @NLearning has some amazing assessment ideas that pair well with DT #dtk12chat
Q2 How do you start a #designthinking challenge? Do you plan it all out or trust the process and put simple guide rails to follow? Or maybe you do something else? #dtk12chat
A2: I love the idea of total choice and letting the Ss guide the process! Since it’s new to our Ss, Im leaving it open enough so it “feels” open for Ss & focusing on pieces of the process like identifying needs. Our prototypes are just sketches now too. It’ll grow! #dtk12chat

It's conference time and I'm just getting to catch up with #dtk12chat for a bit. Lots of neat stuff flowing here!!! Thanks for leading, @scitechyEDU!
Looks like we got a great head start on next week's topic! Everyone come back and find out!
Also a good idea. I’ve been talking with a makerspace teacher from another school about our kids doing a project together that benefits Nashville. #dtk12chat
A3: I like spreading over multiple days or more. Lots of time identifying and defining. 1st ideate session might have a firm time constraint, bc I think that helps get the juices flowing. As Ss become more skilled with what’s involved, I can see parts moving quicker. #dtk12chat
