#edpiper Adam. NEOhio. My fav summer destination is my empty classroom...where I weep loudly over each empty desk. No, not really. It's the Appalachian Trail where I hike up and down mountains, eat Snickers every day, and shower once a week. Woo hoo!!
We kick off with a back to school pep rally and bounce houses! All students (parents and teachers too) get to “bounce” into a new school year! #EDpiper
A1: I took in pictures of my son for the first time to display in my room. Let people see into my personal life and what I spend my time outside of school doing. #edpiper
We made sure to have the hallways decorated in a way that was familiar & reminiscent to the kids! Circus themed w/ "The greatest showman" decorations was A HUGE HIT @CastlemanCreek#edpiper
A1: I'm not attached to a school anymore so I'm about to share great things that happened during the first week at lots of different schools in @Region12! #EDpiper

A1: Our HS students were welcomed on day one by cheerleaders and admin greeting them. In the classroom, I had Ss write on a notecard ANYTHING they wanted me to know. (I shared with them some about me first) #powerful#EDpiper
Hey #EDpiper Friends! I’m Sarah, Director of Digital Learning and Innovation with Transformation Waco in Waco ISD. Favorite summer destination- the beach!
A1: our administrators do an awesome job of making themselves seen and greeting the students and families as they come into school...meet the teacher, the first day, and as the year goes on! #EDpiper
R1: it is about building relationships with kids by talking with them, letting them know you care. Going to games, sending emails to students and parents. We have a “Bear of the Month” recognition for kids doing the right thing. #EDpiper
#edpiper Boarding school. After a Freshmen meeting, the rest of the student body was outside the chapel to cheer them and welcome them to campus. Pretty neat intro!
Probably a reply to someone else’s tweet. On my phone, I can pull the screen down to see the first comment. Hope this helps. Sooooo happy you’re here tonight! #EDpiper
Making students an active part of our school community through jobs, responsibilities, and other community building endeavors. We just started a team today called the Castellans of the Castle. They help keep our castle collaborative spaces tidy. #ownership = #CCEPride#EDpiper
A1. It all starts with a smile. A face to face meaningful good morning. Then I tell them that I care about their well being as a person, not just as a student, and that I will spend the next 36 weeks proving it. #EDpiper
A1: from a district standpoint I’ve integrated 4 innovative learning spaces across the district and spoke with students at all levels about how they like to learn, collected feedback and listened to student voice. They were all smiles! 😁 #EDpiper
In case you missed it, here's the first question for tonight's #EDpiper chat. Just hit reply to tell us about how you make your students feel welcome, add the hashtag #EDpiper, & you're officially in the chat! So easy! :-)
A1 Ts called parents to welcome their child to their class. We as a campus decorated decorated the school in a circus theme from the moment they walked in the door. Also on the 1st day had music playing as students & parents walked up o the school. #edpiper
Q2: The BEST thing about this question, is that I can't think of a single classroom that disappoints or doesn't belong! Everyone at the castle has gone above & beyond to make it a great learning environment! #txed#edpiper
Natalie, I was just about to give you a shout out for the most awesome tweets from @CastlemanCreek#CCEPride Posting the great things that schools and students do will go a long way. #EDpiper
A1: I saw some amazing ways to build community throughout the first weeks of school. My favorite was collaborative social contracts and campus wide displays, such as rock gardens that each teacher and student had the chance to contribute to building. #EDpiper
Q2: The BEST thing about this question, is that I can't think of a single classroom that disappoints or doesn't belong! Everyone at the castle has gone above & beyond to make it a great learning environment! #txed#edpiper
A2: several teachers did student adoptions over the summer. They assigned #s to each student and people randomly got to choose. All students were welcomed back to school with a personalized note and a book by someone they didn’t know but was rooting for them! #EDpiper
In case you missed it, here's question 2 for this week's #EDpiper. Just reply & be sure to add the hashtag #EDpiper. We would LOVE to see photos of your classroom!

R2: one that shouts “you belong here” is active with taking, use of terms from class, application and Ss stating things in their own words. No “sit n git” or regurgitation of info. #EDpiper
In week 1, I share a Google-Doc w/each S called "Mathacognition" where I ask them about their emotional assoc. w/math, what has worked and not worked for them in the past. Focus is on hearing their fears & hopes + affirming that THEY are more important 2 me than math. #edpiper
A2: Classrooms that say you belong start with a smile and a fist bump! Learning a Ss name and greeting them by name in the hallway before they even get inside. Classrooms that shout “we care about you” have Ts that day “You matter!” Ts tell Ss they’re important #EDpiper
Hi everyone you my name is Judith Alvarez. I’m a fifth grade math teacher at Sgt. L. Treviño Elementary, and I’m excitedly start this school!! 👩🏻🏫📚📝#edpiper#fifthgrade#math

There are so many classrooms @CastlemanCreek that shout out, “This place is great, and you belong here!” Hugs, high fives, decor, positive notes, smiles, and nurturing teachers. I am extremely blessed to lead a school with a culture focused on the hearts ❤️students! #edpiper
I always make a joke that, "I don't go home and think of devious ways to make your lives here miserable" typically gets a few laughs and helps break the ice. #edpiper
A2: On the first day students are welcomed with a red carpet, press conference backdrop, paparazzi, and fun music. The car drop-off line is lit @steam_ms! 🔥 #Edpiper
One thing we did this year to help our new teachers feel like they belonged to our community right away was by creating a Google Family Album. Every single staff member built a page from Slides and filled it with pics of family members and things they loved. #EDpiper
A2) All the @TaylorTexans teachers have bought in to relationships first philosophy and begin by greeting students at the door, listening to what they say, and truly caring for kids! Without the relationship, you can’t do anything! #EDpiper

Q2: The best classrooms on our campus have flexible seating (couches, beanbag chairs, etc) and are colorful, have music playing in the background and lots of growth mindset motivational decorations. #EDPiper
Q3: In your opinion, how do the truly great educators build positive relationships with students? Be sure to include the hashtag #EDpiper in your reply.
A2: Classrooms that shout you belong here help students feel connected in and out of the classroom. A great way I have seen this done is Ss creating FlipGrids to ensure that everyone gets a chance to learn about their team mates. #EDpiper
A2: Ss love it when teachers aren’t just there for the academics but for the relationships. Make coming to school a blast on a personal level too! #EDpiper
A3: By getting to know the students beyond the curriculum. Find ways to get to know them, what they're interested in. Build that personal relationship and then make the curriculum connection. #edpiper
Here's a repeat of question 3 in case you missed it. What do you do to build those wonderful relationships with your students? We would love to know! Just add #EDpiper to your tweet to join the conversation!
KIDS DESERVE IT! By always knowing that instruction WILL happen more efficiently when you have noticed, appreciated, and cared for the students for WHO they are, not their SCORES #edpiper#txed
Q2: The best classrooms on our campus have flexible seating (couches, beanbag chairs, etc) and are colorful, have music playing in the background and lots of growth mindset motivational decorations. #EDPiper
A3: Great educators who connect with their students in authentic and genuine ways help to ensure success for the school year! Its starts as soon as teachers get their lists through letters, emails, cards of encouragement, etc. #EDpiper

A3: I think relationships start before they even walk in the door. I ❤️ it when teachers send notes to students over the summer. Anticipation builds excitement! #EDpiper
You build great relationships with Ss by believing in your heart that THEY are the subject...not math or whatever. And I'm just helping to be the best person they want to be....not who I think they SHOULD be. #edpiper
A3: Postive, strong relationships are built when people are allowed to unapologetically be themselves and still be loved and cared for. #EDpiper#MrRogersMovie
A3: getting to know the students on a deeper level! It’s not always easy but it’s always worth it. Learning their interests and what excites them will show them you truly care about them. #EDpiper
Students felt welcomed at Sgt. Leonel Treviño Elementary by always welcoming them with a SMILE & positive comment as they walked in. Teachers created a safe learning environment that was "out of this world. 🌎⭐️💫 #EDpiper

R3: Greer students every day. Talk to, not at, Ss. Teacher sits with kids, shares stories, talks to Ss about their interests. It’s not always all about content. Sometimes it’s talking about life. #edpiper
A3: Great educators get to know students on a personal level and gear their interactions and instruction around their students interests; making sure that instruction is relevant to their students own cultures. #EDPiper
As in all relationships, working through the hard together and showing acceptance and love that is unconditional...no matter what. Relationship building is a work of the heart! #EDpiper
Q3: In your opinion, how do the truly great educators build positive relationships with students? Be sure to include the hashtag #EDpiper in your reply.
We can't underestimate the power of building a connection in advance of school starting! I love the idea of knowing earlier in the summer and building a bridge throughout those precious months! #EDpiper
I have my computer lab, but many times I intentionally don't use it to force students to interact with one another and me. Can't always hide behind a screen. #edpiper
A3) The great ones make students feel like they genuinely care and aren’t just going through the motions. No matter the story they are intentionally listening #EDpiper
A3: The best teachers put kids first. They spend time getting to know them, finding out their likes/dislikes, model respect, and love them daily. It all starts there. #EDpiper
A3 There are many ways to connect with Ss... talking with them to get to know their interest, having a special lunch w/ Ss, attending a Ss special event, making the time they have with their Ss meaningful and purposeful. #EDpiper
Teachers at Sgt. Leonel Treviño Elementary build positive relationships with students by always listening to what they need to say! Teachers always keep their students needs and involving their families! #EDpiper
I come from an ABA background, I didn't years working with students and adults on the autism spectrum, I address sensory issues, part of that is my stack of handmade weighted lap pads, my students ask for sensory breaks and use them functionally throughout class.
#EDpiper
A3: Ts who show an interesting their Ss interest and incorporated tinting their classroom. Ss love when I share my family pictures & family adventures with them. When you invest in your Ss they’ll invest in what you’re teaching. #EDpiper
A4: Make positive phone calls to parents frequently, ask for advice from parents about school activities, have parents share their careers with Ss, host a "Goals Night" to share expectations & the school's vision. #getparentsinvolved#EDpiper
A4: We have a "back to school" event every year inviting parents to come meet their child's teachers. I personally send out an e-mail welcoming them to the class and talking about what they'll learn. #edpiper

Here's question 4 for #EDpiper in case you missed it. Families are SUPER important! What do you do to make them feel connected to school? We'd love to know! Be sure to add the hashtag #EDpiper!
R4: I tweet a little bit. I also use @remind101 to communicate. Every Friday (or Saturday this week) I send out an email to parents and Ss recapping the week and letting them know what will happen this week. It connects everyone.
A3: Taking time to remember names, and picking up on the little things they say and asking about it later. How was your game? Is your mom still mad at you? Can you believe that episode ended that way??? #edpiper
Q4: I keep in CONSTANT contact & update them on their child's WHOLE well-being (not just academic). As a parent, I value that, & I make sure my families feel that I'm their for their child & THEM! "How would I want my childs teacher to act?" #txed#edpiper
A4: Communicate. Then communicate some more. Then do it again. #latherrinserepeat#tellthem#allthethings Put it on Twitter, Facebook, SnapChat, website, email, call Home. Tell parents things and INVITE them to be a part #EDpiper
R4: I tweet a little bit. I also use @remind101 to communicate. Every Friday (or Saturday this week) I send out an email to parents and Ss recapping the week and letting them know what will happen this week. It connects everyone. #EDpiper
A4: commutation, communication, communication! Make them feel apart of their child’s education & classroom. Send daily pics of what you’re doing in the classroom. Parents love seeing their Ss engaged! #EDpiper
A3. I have lots of small ways to build relationships but the one that is most effective is listening. If a student knows that you are more than just hearing, you are truly listening (listening is associated with caring) they will will buy in! #EDpiper
#Edpiper A3: it’s cliche but “pick your battles”. And start every day fresh - don’t hold grudges. I’ve seen students who were shocked that I still “liked” them or talked to them after I had to get on to them - they were used to Ts holding grudges or labeling them the “bad” kid
A4: Parents want to be able to trust the school...trust happens through communication, transparency, keeping your word, giving your best to their child day in and out. #EDpiper
Promoting an environment that is welcoming and transparent. Being visible, waving at car lines, sending weekly newsletters to families, etc. #EDpiper When they have concerns, make sure you genuinely listen.
My kids love 'tweeting' their exit post it tickets on our Twitter board.
I also have a mailbox in my room (an actual mailbox from Ace hardware) , they write me notes or draw pictures, they know I check it and respond daily.
#Edpiper
A4: Make positive phone calls to parents frequently, ask for advice from parents about school activities, have parents share their careers with Ss, host a "Goals Night" to share expectations & the school's vision. #getparentsinvolved#EDpiper
Student-Teacher relationships are more important than rigor, relevance and technology. Students will learn if they believe the Teachers care about them. #edpiper
A4: Positive phone calls home! I’ve gotten some fun responses when I’ve made those “good” calls home the first week of school. Weekly newsletter, staying active on social media, parent night. #EDpiper
They know from Day 1 or the day before school when to expect my emails and what it will contain. Then I follow through. No reason for them not to have knowledge of the room. #EDpiper
Q4: I keep in CONSTANT contact & update them on their child's WHOLE well-being (not just academic). As a parent, I value that, & I make sure my families feel that I'm their for their child & THEM! "How would I want my childs teacher to act?" #txed#edpiper
A4: Parents need to feel that the school is an extension of the home. We are part of the family. All too often parents are intimidated by the school system and don't feel a true partnership. Open up your school to the community as often as possible to build relationships #EdPiper
A4: Communicate. Then communicate some more. Then do it again. #latherrinserepeat#tellthem#allthethings Put it on Twitter, Facebook, SnapChat, website, email, call Home. Tell parents things and INVITE them to be a part #EDpiper

A3: Developing routines to build collaboration and relationships intentionally is key. Teachers who do this well, have more peaceful classrooms which work together. #EDpiper
A4: Communicate. Then communicate some more. Then do it again. #latherrinserepeat#tellthem#allthethings Put it on Twitter, Facebook, SnapChat, website, email, call Home. Tell parents things and INVITE them to be a part #EDpiper

Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and email keeps them informed. Personal calls/emails with positive shout-outs about their student maintains the connection. #EDpiper
Here's question 4 for #EDpiper in case you missed it. Families are SUPER important! What do you do to make them feel connected to school? We'd love to know! Be sure to add the hashtag #EDpiper!
I once had a mom who came back later & had not only saved EVERY note, newsletter, etc I had ever sent home, but also had made a scrapbook out of copies of them for the grandparents! I’m glad I stuck to being positive at all times! 😀🙄😀 #EDpiper

A5: Teachers need other teachers. This is not a job that can be done alone. Collaboration and friendship are vital in keeping teachers sane and happy.
#EDpiper#leanoneachother
Q5: We chose to become educators so we could change lives & impact future generations. That was from @KidsDeserveIt & it has stayed with me! #txed#edpiper
A4: Developing relationships with families to know that we are all on the same team which is to help their children be successful. It takes consistency, communication, kindness and a willingness to listen and learn along with all the other great comments. #EDpiper
Here's a repeat of #EDpiper Q5 in case you missed it. I am a huge fan of inspirational quotes! Be sure to add the hashtag #EDpiper when you share your favorites!
A4. I always want to have a class that gets talked about at the dinner table. I love it when a parent tells me “ my kid wanted to talk about_________ that they learned in your class.” That is next level thinking when the whole family is involved! #EDpiper
R5: Being an educator is hard work. There are times where you will fail. It’s ok to make mistakes because it makes you and your students grow. #EDpiper
A3. Be present & visible. Communicate through weekly messages or random positive phone calls. Love making those, Ps are shocked thinking their S did something wrong then laugh when they know it was just to hear how great they have been #edpiper
A4: Developing relationships with families to know that we are all on the same team which is to help their children be successful. It takes consistency, communication, kindness and a willingness to listen and learn along with all the other great comments. #EDpiper
After a difficult day remember, “The farmer doesn’t blame his crops for their lack of production. The problem might be in the soil, rain, sunlight, or infestation. As teachers we need to focus on what our students might need before we rush to condemn.” PM #STATstrong
Before things end tonight, make sure to follow the folks here who've affirmed, challenged, and/or inspired you! Let's keep our world full of these good influences! #edpiper#resiliencechat
A5: During my graduate degree PLUS my first year of teaching my mentor told me many times “Teaching is like learning to build an airplane as you are flying it.” It’s been a quote that has always stuck with me and helps the hard days. #EDpiper
R5: Being an educator is hard work. There are times where you will fail. It’s ok to make mistakes because it makes you and your students grow. #EDpiper
I have saved every picture and note from my students throughout the year every year, every summer I make a scrap book with them.
It makes me remember all the smiles and laughter and I can recall how things were from my first year teaching.

A5: Just know that even though you can't see the impact that you have on their lives immediately, or possibly ever, your job is important and they need you more than you think they do (and way more than they will likely ever show). #EdPiper
Yes! And help spark those conversations by sharing with us parents what you're all learning in the classroom. Sometimes our kids need a little starter. #EDPiper
A4. I always want to have a class that gets talked about at the dinner table. I love it when a parent tells me “ my kid wanted to talk about_________ that they learned in your class.” That is next level thinking when the whole family is involved! #EDpiper
This!!!! 🤗 I was a #hotmessexpress in HS. I want to be the person that my students NEED to help them get through the hard parts of high school #dontgiveup#edpiper
And every parent is giving you the best they can give. Being a single parent myself once, I know the value of counting on others in your village. Priceless. It's not anything I'll ever be able to repay, but I can do it for others now. #EDpiper
At Sgt. Leonel Treviño Elementary, we help parents stay connected by implementing social media & Class Dojo to help them keep connected with their students' activities & classwork! #EDpiper

#Edpiper A5 “You can’t control the wind but you can adjust your sails” - don’t stress over the stuff you have no control over - be a rockstar at the things you can!
A6:My wish for this school year: be approachable to Ts, listen more than I speak, give bite-size feedback, share my own failures, and develop relationships with Ts that allow for vulnerability with each other. #EDpiper#listenmoretalkless#failforward
Why it helps to have teacher assignments as early as possible. Not all families are available when certain meet-ups are scheduled. Give teachers and families the time and space to meet when it works for everyone. #ptchat#EDPiper

A6: My wish for the year is to remind myself everyday why I do what I do, to invest in lives and teach our future leaders! Share my passion with Ss daily and to stay POSITIVE even when things get rough. #EDpiper
to renew my love for teaching. To inspire other Ts to first realize there IS a box....and then to think and act outside of it...or as if it isn't even there. #edpiper
What a great parent! And for those of us parents who aren't quite so organized... ;)
... Use electronic means as much as possible. Blogs, for example, can be forever. #EDPiper
I once had a mom who came back later & had not only saved EVERY note, newsletter, etc I had ever sent home, but also had made a scrapbook out of copies of them for the grandparents! I’m glad I stuck to being positive at all times! 😀🙄😀 #EDpiper
Absolutely! Flexibility is key and for some families and students, there may need to be multiple meetings or meet up opportunities to ensure students have a an opportunity to become comfortable. #EDPiper
A6: My hope for this year is to reach all my students and to make sure they know they are loved and cared for every single day. And of course to develop a love of reading in all of them. #EDpiper
A6: My wish for this year is to grow my Ss through what they go through. I want them to leave my class as better human beings. I want to show them that they matter to me! #illbeyourperson#grow#flourish#EDpiper
A6) Is that every person that walks through the doors of my school knows they are loved, safe, and capable of doing anything they wish. That means students, teachers, and parents! Love big and set expectations high! #EDpiper

Our theme this year is from "The Greatest Showman." Just think how many opportunities we have each day to help a child move one step closer to their dream. That's not a job. That's an awesome experience in life we have been blessed to be part of as educators. #EDpiper
#EdPiper A6 my wish for this year is to be as excited and creative with my lessons the last six weeks as I am the first six week #FightTheFade#SayNoToBurnOut
My wish for this year is just to remember that what I do matters...that despite the fact that I will be pulled in a 1,000 directions, my #1 focus is and always be my students and my staff! #EDpiper
All of this! "Visitor" passes, while logical, may send the wrong message. How about EVERYONE in the school, including families, wearing the same kind of tag every day? #EDPiper
A4: Parents need to feel that the school is an extension of the home. We are part of the family. All too often parents are intimidated by the school system and don't feel a true partnership. Open up your school to the community as often as possible to build relationships #EdPiper

At the very least, we need a world where students are surprised when adults hold grudges toward them, not the other way around. At best, adults let it go and remember THESE ARE KIDS! #EDPiper
#Edpiper A3: it’s cliche but “pick your battles”. And start every day fresh - don’t hold grudges. I’ve seen students who were shocked that I still “liked” them or talked to them after I had to get on to them - they were used to Ts holding grudges or labeling them the “bad” kid
By letting them know that you’re a real person just like them. I like talking to them about my family. When I make a mistake I tell them and apologize for it, I like for them to know that even though I am a teacher I am nowhere near perfect... and that’s ok. #EDpiper
Thank you all for the wonderful learning tonight. I know I will rest easier knowing such amazing educators are taking great care of our future! #amazingeducators#EDPiper
