#TechtalkGA Q1 Tell us your title, school/dist. and what your favorite Super Bowl Commercial was!
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Feb 4 @ 9:01 PM EST
Hey, #TECHtalkGA! I'm Angela, Dist ITS for MS/HS in Forsyth Co + French 1 T. I wasn't super-impressed with the commercials this year, but liked the Dilly Dilly GoT combo.
  • iamryanwhite Feb 4 @ 9:02 PM EST
#techtalkga A1 Ryan White. Lead #edtech learner from #floydpln Lots of good ones. I'm more thankful that @CBSSports streamed it for free.
  • mycalfdoll Feb 4 @ 9:02 PM EST
A1: Jason Bateman. Was it Hyundai? Vegan dinner had me laughing. #TECHtalkGA
  • MsWillipedia Feb 4 @ 9:03 PM EST
Hello everyone! I'm Nadia, Digital Learning Coordinator for the Cobb County School District. There were so many great commercials this year, but the @OlaySkin one was hilarious. #TECHtalkGA

Oh yeah, that one was good too! And so was the failed Alexa with Harrison Ford LOL! #TECHtalkGA

  • CurtHitchens Feb 4 @ 9:03 PM EST
#TechTalkGA Q1: Curt Hitchens, Computer Science teacher in Walker County, GA, I wasn't impressed with any of the Super Bowl commercials. I studied for the instructional technology GACE instead.

#TECHtalkGA Q2: HOW IMPORTANT IS THE CONCERN FOR INTERNET/CYBER SAFETY IN YOUR SCHOOL/DISTRICT? HOW DO YOU KNOW?
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Feb 4 @ 9:04 PM EST
While I didn't love the commercial, I *do* love SMG! #TECHtalkGA

Valid valid. That said, the @Audi one was also one of my favorites. 😂 #TECHtalkGA

A2: it is very important to us. It is challenging to teach how every user has an important role in the process of security. #TECHtalkGA
  • iamryanwhite Feb 4 @ 9:07 PM EST
#techtalkga A2 As we increased devices, our schools stepped up the plate and got #digcit certified by @CommonSenseEd. Our teachers are also getting better at spotting spam emails because they immediately notify us. This topic truly "takes a village"
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Feb 4 @ 9:08 PM EST
#TECHtalkGA A2: We have a big push right now for making teachers aware of the need to protect student privacy and to encourage smart online decisions with students. One way that we do this is with a new tool from @EdFramework that helps Ts easily eval sites & tools.
    • edtechteach3 Feb 4 @ 9:04 PM EST
#TECHtalkGA Q2: HOW IMPORTANT IS THE CONCERN FOR INTERNET/CYBER SAFETY IN YOUR SCHOOL/DISTRICT? HOW DO YOU KNOW?
  • edtechteach3 Feb 4 @ 9:09 PM EST
#TECHtalkGA It was because of your district, motivating @DawsonSchools became @CommonSenseEd certified!

#TECHtalkGA Q3: HOW DO YOU (OR YOUR SYSTEM/DIST.) ADDRESS STUDENT INTERNET SAFETY INSIDE THE SCHOOLS OR CLASSROOM?
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Feb 4 @ 9:10 PM EST
#TECHtalkGA, meet the #forsythpln IRL! Sorry to interrupt the flow of the convo, but I wanted to take the chance to remind you one last time how much I hope to see lots of you this Sat at #edcampforsyth! @EdCamp_Forsyth 02.09.19 8:30am @SouthForsythMS https://t.co/YLk1YzcqBI
  • CurtHitchens Feb 4 @ 9:10 PM EST
#TechTalkGA A2: CIPA and FERPA essentially force these things to be a top priority. E-Rate and other funding sources are tied to their implementation.
    • edtechteach3 Feb 4 @ 9:04 PM EST
#TECHtalkGA Q2: HOW IMPORTANT IS THE CONCERN FOR INTERNET/CYBER SAFETY IN YOUR SCHOOL/DISTRICT? HOW DO YOU KNOW?
  • MsWillipedia Feb 4 @ 9:10 PM EST
A2: While there are so many opportunities that come from the internet, as educators, our district does see importance in keeping students as safe as possible online when on campus. I know this from first-hand work and from observations of internal policies. #TECHtalkGA
  • CurtHitchens Feb 4 @ 9:11 PM EST
#TechTalkGA A2: I also know that certain districts require students to complete courses from Common Sense Media before issuing them devices.
  • mycalfdoll Feb 4 @ 9:12 PM EST
Q3: common sense education dig cit curriculum. Teacher awareness and goguardian. #TECHtalkGA
  • MsWillipedia Feb 4 @ 9:12 PM EST
A3: From a technical standpoint, we have firewalls and filters galore focusing on keeping our students out of harm's way. #TECHtalkGA
  • MsWillipedia Feb 4 @ 9:13 PM EST
I wish I could be there in person, but I'll be sure to RT and share this info! #TECHTalkGA

  • iamryanwhite Feb 4 @ 9:13 PM EST
#TechtalkGA A3 Tons of filtering, firewall protections, and Google Admin user/device restrictions. The best advantage that we have? Our teachers. Invest in them with Google Certifications, 1 on 1 coaching, and timely support.
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Feb 4 @ 9:15 PM EST
#TECHtalkGA A3: In addition to using tools like Ed Frameworks, we also have implemented a K-12 Digital Citizenship curriculum involving EVERYONE: Ts, Ss, admin, MSs, ITSs, Ps, counselors. We're also looking at another tool for next yr that will help us monitor BYOT devices.
    • edtechteach3 Feb 4 @ 9:10 PM EST
#TECHtalkGA Q3: HOW DO YOU (OR YOUR SYSTEM/DIST.) ADDRESS STUDENT INTERNET SAFETY INSIDE THE SCHOOLS OR CLASSROOM?
  • MsWillipedia Feb 4 @ 9:15 PM EST

#TECHtalkGA Q4: HOW DO YOU OR YOUR SYSTEM/DIST. ADDRESS STUDENT INTERNET SAFETY OUTSIDE THE SCHOOLS OR CLASSROOM?
  • MsWillipedia Feb 4 @ 9:16 PM EST
Yes, having technical safeguards as well as providing instructional support and guidance in tandem work better. #TECHtalkGA
    • iamryanwhite Feb 4 @ 9:13 PM EST

Isn't that the truth?! We can't be there all the time, so we have to teach them what to look for, how to react. It's kinda like how we raise our kids LOL #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @iamryanwhite
  • CurtHitchens Feb 4 @ 9:18 PM EST
#TechTalkGA A3: I use Apple Remote Desktop to monitor computers. We also encourage teachers to stick with the guidelines in the AUP regarding image and video searches. I also like to use https://t.co/wiP4QEuTj2 to remove related content from YouTube videos.

#TECHtalkGA Q3: HOW DO YOU (OR YOUR SYSTEM/DIST.) ADDRESS STUDENT INTERNET SAFETY INSIDE THE SCHOOLS OR CLASSROOM?
  • iamryanwhite Feb 4 @ 9:18 PM EST
#TechtalkGA A4 That's really really hard. Where the school house ends can be a sticky answer. We take home and filter devices 9-12. Unless the "after school time" creates a large disturbance in the school, we don't address it.
  • mycalfdoll Feb 4 @ 9:19 PM EST
A4: common sense Ed. We’ve had parent nights but haven’t had good attendance. Any ideas from those who’ve had success? #TECHtalkGA
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Feb 4 @ 9:20 PM EST
#TECHtalkGA A4: Outside of school is tough. This is where the rubber meets the road re: dig cit. If Ss have really learned the lessons, it helps. If it's just compliance, then we have to start thinking about consequences, especially if it interferes with the school day.
    • edtechteach3 Feb 4 @ 9:16 PM EST
#TECHtalkGA Q4: HOW DO YOU OR YOUR SYSTEM/DIST. ADDRESS STUDENT INTERNET SAFETY OUTSIDE THE SCHOOLS OR CLASSROOM?
  • MsWillipedia Feb 4 @ 9:20 PM EST
A4: That's a big question! I have seen many different methods in addition to teaching digital literacy, and wonder what ultimately is the most effective way. Looking forward to learning from the other answers. #TECHTalkGA

We are going to try a cyber safety night for our community in April. We’ll see how it goes. #techtalkGa

#TechTalkGA A4: On at least two occasions, we've had GBI agents visit our middle school students to discuss cyber safety and appropriate online behavior. Many of our kids are clueless about the consequences of some of their actions.

#TECHtalkGA Q5: WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE BIGGEST CYBER THREAT TO OUR STUDENTS IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS?
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Feb 4 @ 9:25 PM EST
For sure! We also have our county sheriffs come out to speak to Ss and Ps - they're always shocked by what they hear. #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @CurtHitchens
  • MsWillipedia Feb 4 @ 9:26 PM EST
Sadly, I can imagine that's so. I also feel that many parents probably don't know what to teach their children about the consequences of their digital actions (especially since so many adults don't quite know what to do themselves). #TECHTalkGA

#techtalkga A5 Ransomware and data breaches are becoming common place, which is not a good sign. Upcoming is the weaponization of AI and Quantum computers that can hack anything.
  • MsWillipedia Feb 4 @ 9:29 PM EST
A5: I foresee privacy continuing to be an issue. #TECHTalkGA
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Feb 4 @ 9:30 PM EST
#TECHtalkGA A5: I think what we've seen already mentioned here: a lack of understanding. They think if their account is private, they're safe. Or if it's 1:1 (texting, DM, etc.), or in their home (smart devices). Everything digital opens a door, and not always to friends.
  • edtechteach3 Feb 4 @ 9:31 PM EST
Great chat tonight, #TECHtalkGA! Thanks to everyone who participated! Fill out the form below to make sure you get tagged as a reminder next week! https://t.co/p7HG03Ln1L

#TECHtalkGA, looks like we all had pretty much the same thoughts LOL! #greatminds
  • CurtHitchens Feb 4 @ 9:31 PM EST
#TechTalkGA A5: I think the biggest cyber threat will focus on our students' personal information. I know this is a hot topic in districts throughout GA currently. There seems to be a lot of gray areas and some very limiting state regulations.
  • iamryanwhite Feb 4 @ 9:33 PM EST
#TECHtalkGA Exactly. It's a matter of when, not if. Advocate for recovery plans, check insurance policies, educate people on cybersecurity, and have internal/external audits of your network.
    • CurtHitchens Feb 4 @ 9:31 PM EST

A5: I think a bigger threat is determining reality, in many forms. Is this email/link from someone I can trust? Is this post shared by someone with an agenda. Are these real feelings or manipulations engineered? #TECHtalkGA

Thank you @edtechteach3 for hosting #TechtalkGA. Wish that I could be at @EdCamp_Forsyth to catch up with everyone!
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Feb 4 @ 9:36 PM EST
That's a skill that can't be emphasized enough, to Ss as well as to adults. Possibly even more to adults, who sometimes they know enough that they don't need to look with a critical eye anymore. #TECHtalkGA

  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Feb 4 @ 9:43 PM EST
Thanks so much to @edtechteach3 who volunteered to host #TECHtalkGA tonight when I forgot it was Monday & realized I had no topic LOL! See y'all next week to workshop what we're working on: come prepared to share success, struggle, & strategies (HT to @gillianriley00)!
