Great topic: We discuss about „Best tools for teaching and learning“ at - beginning in 2 hours from now.
Want to create a high-performance culture in your school? Book your place at our free session in https://t.co/VBDbtIwheT
All the work I do with and Chromebooks, it always come back to how devices open opportunities for access.
NOW Topic: What specific ways have iPads, Chromebooks, Laptops changed the way we approach teaching compared to last Century?
W/Internet access, any student can have knowledge the teacher doesn’t have. This can be powerful if teacher’s not treated
My school has 1:1 laptop program. It has definitely changed the way we look at classroom management! https://t.co/aRYTJtDKSZ
WELCOME Topic: What specific ways have iPads, Chromebooks, Laptops changed the way we approach teaching compared to last Century?
"Intelligence plus character: that is the true goal of education" -Martin Luther King, Jr.
When all students have a device, there can be lots more participation.
"Curating" content is now an academic task. Didn't exist before. (Well, Ss created "Works Cited" pages.)
Hi, all! From NY here attending Hunter College's Graduate School of Education!
...and it truly enables the "teacher as facilitator" philosophy! https://t.co/SZccsf85oX
When all students have a device, there can be lots more participation.
Chromebooks and have transformed classrooms in .
Advanced technology plays a big part in this. For example, e-books, learning games, and apps to help with translation
Also, effective 1to1 Chromebook programs create time & space for authentic learning - For teachers and students.
Devices/internet access have made resources essentially unlimited. We use to depend on one/two stagnant, school-selected resources.
I certainly can, if in the right hands...
Has student access to personal devices made teaching easier, harder, or just a different model from past experience?
JOIN Topic: What specific ways have iPads, Chromebooks, Laptops changed the way we approach teaching compared to last Century?
TRUTH iPads, Chromebooks, Laptops etc have changed nothing… WE have changed how we teach to accommodate technology.
Hi! We look forward to connecting with you & sharing news and tips around K-12 digital content and resources.
instant access to information allows teachers to create more engaging lessons just in time
TRANFORMED is a big word. How so transformed in
Easier, with the right use of professional development.
Joining a bit late today from the blizzard which is Denver today.
So more access to more stuff...what impact has that had?
Backward instruction > conventional for students with lower cognitive flexibility & vice versa https://t.co/W4cXQUouYt
Translation apps can be a big help for students learning another language.
teaching hasn't changed as much as technology has changed, tech is just another tool for teaching same old way, in most cases
tools I love most are and
. Teachers are approaching teaching and learning in a different way. More access. More possibilities.
If 1:1 students get direct instruction online the teacher can be more effective.
Yes, digital has made teaching more challenging. We really have to transfer ownership as well as facilitate vs. dictate.
pedagogy has not changed, it can, through Ss driven learning that devices can now allow, more difficult to do without some tech use
In 1:1 programs you should be able to get rid of textbooks and their cost.
Access is a start. What happens after access -- aka pedagogically -- is what really matters. What have you seen happen?
Strong system of education is key
It's sad that you feel that way, I would disagree. Not as much "chalk and talk" nowadays! https://t.co/37nPh1kMk9
teaching hasn't changed as much as technology has changed, tech is just another tool for teaching same old way, in most cases
It’s hard to learn coding without a computer of some sort.
Technology added isn't necessarily value added. Value comes from the teachers, support, and reflection.
pedagogy from T directed, to student directed, less diaromas and more student choice, videos websites
I find my iPad to be very useful in the way I learn. It is more organized, can fit all books/files in one place, and effective
I think digital has made a better pedagogy more possible. But, we can still limit/control kids even with tech. Need the pedagogy.
If thought is given to the "why" of 1:1 up front and a goal set to personalize learning and make Ss creators, I see positive change.
Should 1:1 access be the standard that we strive for? Are we teaching this methodology in teacher preparation programs?
Ok... more possibilities...what actualities?
i have learned so much more through tech since it brings about opportunities non existent before ipads etc. personalize PD
Some students can overcome ineffective teachers w/device it they are self-directed learners.
In educ the more things change, the more we understand why some things are the way they are AND SHOULD BE LEFT ALONE…eg: Teachers
Number of the Day: 82%
Record Rate for U.S. High School Graduation!
Our schools are not failing. https://t.co/wa5cxhhdeG
so does organized correlate with learn more/better?
1:1 is okay. Devices when you need them is the key.
Tech and devices has forced teachers to be learners again. And that is good.
teacher prep doesn't prepare for 1:1 not when most prep classes are lecture based, show preserv Ss what it really is
Graduation rates are up only because feds are pushing for it. You could graduate a monkey if you wanted to.
What's yr favorite kids book on diversity & acceptance? https://t.co/Twm6C5aEL3 6 childrens books on diversity & acceptance
At least half of HS grads have to take remedial courses in college if they go.
Teachers are reflecting and rethinking how they teach. I like this.
thanks Andrew... what examples of opportunities that weren't there previously?
Thanks for the follow Always excited to share and learn from colleagues
How might we step clear fidelity in the next two months?
Schools need to figure out the pedagogy before they hand every kid a device.
most cases teachers still do chalk talk, there are pockets, but not as much as I would hope to see
We can't separate the tchr from the tech. Knowledgable, enthusiastic tchrs using tech will be more effective than those who hate it.
Teachers are always surprised by how often students think about school. Access is the key.
Yes. Organization is a big asset in learning. Accessibility to resources is important in our everyday learning.
My Franklin planner made me more organized in the 1980s. It didn't make me smarter.
Tech/Access are the tools, along with pedagogy, to make relevant/engaging challenges for our students. Hard to be really pro w/out.
connect across continents, collab on student driven projects, meet with scientists, deliver a story like never before
need more that just access to devices... 1:1 is more about marketing by tech companies than pedagogy for Ts and Ss...
iPads are good for consuming information and not so good for creating it.
Technology won't replace teachers, but teachers who use technology well will replace those who refuse technology's impact.
Looking to control recreational traffic on campus? Listen to our on-demand webinar to find out how: https://t.co/w9Ihsvfcwg
agreed, we are on that path, not ready since pedagogy hasn't kept up, what will it look like? not just using google
We should strive for 1:1. Would you want to be a student without one?
so if tech is transforming education... when will the transformation be visible at widespread scale?
so much more Ss collab, think about what could happen now, design challenges across countries, learning
Tech tools are driving work, innovation & the world. Ed. has to be part of it. To me, it's a Student or Civil Rights issue too.
Could not agree more, Mark. So you're 1:1. Now what? Technology before instruction/a plan is not optimal. https://t.co/jZFp3sMYZG
need more that just access to devices... 1:1 is more about marketing by tech companies than pedagogy for Ts and Ss...
It will look like students getting direct instruction online and teachers facilitating learning in groups or ind.
BY MOST MEASURES education performance is flatline. Why so little effect from massive addition of technology to classrooms?
only be visible when learning begins to grow outside of the brick building, learning all the time
As long as the model is "teaching is something we do to kids" devices won't make a substantive difference in the outcome.
Sit down, face the front, buckle up, turn off your electronics - school is like flying!Dr Rue Change education
If 1:1 was the clear answer to instructional/achievement challenges everyone would have been 1:1 long ago.
totally true, Ss see care they are willing to go way outside comfort zone, learn and be absolutely amazing!! https://t.co/vjupXo3S6E
You're replaceable when it comes to providing kids information, but irreplaceable when they know you care... via
problem is lots of 1:1 is just using the device like a worksheet
STUDENTS are immersed in technology yet no significant gains in learning. What’s up with that?
Sadly, what has happened is that we are using tech/access for more testing vs. more creativity, innovation and student ownership.
Failure is the new success.
Not sure yet, but I think some 20th Century-thinking educators need to be out of the field first https://t.co/K9MjbQpQuG
so if tech is transforming education... when will the transformation be visible at widespread scale?
it's still NOT about the tech - it has to be about effective teaching & building relationships - tech can help do this
Multiple choice questions are the best way to evaluate student learning
This is so tough to watch. Part of our job is to make sure this doesn't happen. https://t.co/KjTmRpFZS2
problem is lots of 1:1 is just using the device like a worksheet
As important as the client devices (iPads, laptops, etc.) are infrastructure & connectivity.
I can put a jet engine on a bicycle, but all I get is more noise. The system is designed to get the results it gets.
agree, we have most opportunities now to be creative, what do we do? test and more testing, why not create and evaluate?
immersed in tech is not the same as being immersed in learning
But it provides "bad" teachers with a better way to shift to provide more modern learning for Ss https://t.co/MGHSsmW72F
DANGER technology doesn't replace bad pedagogy...it merely makes babd pedagogy more efficiently bad -->
I am always amazed at the fact that there are still many educators who view tech in education as an option and not a necessity.
I agree with you but would change the order to relationships first.
"When the community becms the curric, the what and the why of lrng comes together." https://t.co/5LCDYfHFHj Gr8 talk by
Be careful: Using technology doesn't necessarily make you a more effective teacher. Teaching isn't even close to that simple.
Create and share your videos for Dec. It's all about community during the holidays, share your story with
agreed, bad pedagogy=bad questions=unsuccessful Ss no matter if tech is involved
Client devices without top notch educational content or capabilities to create/access such are not much of help.
Tech enhances...It'll make a good lesson great or a bad lesson worse. Use tech wisely!
This is where the support of district and building instructional leadership is absolutely essential. https://t.co/WGX47t6T5L
I am always amazed at the fact that there are still many educators who view tech in education as an option and not a necessity.
DOES ANYONE SERIOUSLY believe that education is getting the full benefit of technology? Whose fault education or technology?
School pension problem made worse thanks to teachers retiring early due to test & punish reform movement.
Giving a poor teacher technology just gives him or her one more thing to struggle with.
tech has opened the eyes of many Ss to stories they never would have heard like through and https://t.co/OtXJGGx7mZ
tech is either a tool that can deepen teaching learning or just tech for the sake of having tech.
A direct quote from my class newsletter was turned into the BEST holiday gift ever-thanks Noah!
https://t.co/wEtHIezmsN
Truth. In turn though, it makes great teachers even better. https://t.co/ca45Coe2Q6
it's all about the pedagogy. Tech doesn't make poor teachers good!
I agree. Tech necessary to meet the needs of modern learners!
I've seen that happen. It's tough to watch.
Many educators are focused on what’s convenient for the adults. Learning new tech/pedagogy doesn’t fit.
are you saying is not well designed for edu, or that edu is not taking advantage of resource?
In most cases, certainly no. We're limited by our structures, mindsets, pedagogy, belief in students, fear of failure.
A direct quote from my class newsletter was turned into the BEST holiday gift ever-thanks Noah!
https://t.co/FAsoEMW7yr
i'd go on a limb and say that it's educations fault, really same structure as 100 years ago, could be so much better
Totally agree, Mark! https://t.co/6K9bhv40Lp
DANGER technology doesn't replace bad pedagogy...it merely makes babd pedagogy more efficiently bad -->
We look for silver bullets and want instant change. We have a hard time focused on the goal - Look, squirrel.
now in 4th decade of tech revolution. Most fields have changed, educ has changed little.. even though lots of tech...why?
when we have such a big system, change has to happen from bottom up, not top down and that's difficult for many Ts and policy makers
tech in the classroom is the same as games in the classroom. Either for learning or just for fun
Tech is a solution looking for a problem. It’s up to educators to figure it out.
We should still have books, just not textbooks.
Challenge: Teaching with technology when you didn't experience it as a student growing up. Takes work to make this happen.
It needs to come from both directions.
education is one of the slowest moving industries to incorporate tech in its space.
"both" answers your question pretty well, as far as blame is concerned then
Why have this topic on today if we have not changed significantly? Or is it not enough yet?
Tech important aspect, but we really need to break free of traditional school models /traditions. Ts/Ss need to be free to design.
One thing I'll never understand: "let's replace books with tablets".
we not have chance to model and evaluate problems through tech that only supercomputers and scientists could do a few years ago
I love the reflective nature of questioning within an online discussion.
During a session at the NYS Capitol - IDs the need for additional $ for foster youth to attend college
New wine into old wine skins. https://t.co/l9JTlhXx7J
now in 4th decade of tech revolution. Most fields have changed, educ has changed little.. even though lots of tech...why?
Public wouldn't accept a car from the 1980s today, but does accept schooling from then. Why is confusing.
I so wish that design was more in tune with pedagogy, but it would be also great if schools evolved
I don’t know if we have failed technology, but we have a ways to go to figure out optimum use.
i'd agree, policy makers can't create education change when they don't have a clue, need more educators as pol. makers
A key to teaching with technology is learning alongside your students. This can be a powerful model.
Tech is the Tool, Teacher is The Transformer. T's need to embrace tech, but way more than that.
P1 very interesting article. Indeed teenagers are seen as a challenging age group to work with https://t.co/rEMJXZ6WYZ
LAUSD closed in wake of threats! Say this was your district? Do you have a way to engage your community? https://t.co/2vr83oOcEo
Some of our educations more like 1880s.
Subtopic: Is removing too many of the interpersonal connections that Ts have with Ss or Ss have with other Ss?
it would be nice if pedagogy evolved too. We know best practice but continue teaching how we were taught.
. Is it fair to say that educational tech is only as good as the hands it is in?
EDUCATION WILL KEEPING GET THE TECH it's been getting until education demands more/better... https://t.co/CcfpmoqM3B
P2 however they have much potential for development and we should take advantage of as educators https://t.co/rEMJXZ6WYZ
Yes! Reality is we are connected world wide, shouldn't Ss & Ts benefit in ways that deepen 21stCC? https://t.co/otVKhR6ZFz
so much more Ss collab, think about what could happen now, design challenges across countries, learning
good share, spot on, failing technology, we must drive change and if we allow for pedagogy to overload Ts= no success
Schools need to find a new paradigm more than they need to evolve.
LAUSD closed in wake of threats. Say this was your district? Do you have a way to engage your community? https://t.co/2vr83oOcEo
I don't believe books should ever be fully replaced. However, I believe in adapting to new technologies as they evolve.
More tech for the sake of more tech is not an answer. We all wish it was, but it's not.
Ed is the only business run by elected volunteers and rich guys with way more money than they need.
We must bring what students do with Tech outside of school into school.
. When it comes to Tech in edu, we have too many educators and administrators steeped in their own 20th Cent education.
here's an old tweet saying the same thing: https://t.co/T4PDdf3BZR
Comparing iPads and educational materials is worse than comparing apples & oranges. It's comparing apples and the bag they come in.
Ed tech amplifies a teacher's capability--good or bad.
pedag. shift must look like more robust real life environment where we pose ??s, this does happen, not as much as it could w/ tech
Question to ask: What value is technology adding in instruction and/or student achievement?
indeed, maybe coming up with active ideas that entail putting phones away not just lecturing https://t.co/xW9TJhDxxj
Yes, digital has made teaching more challenging. We really have to transfer ownership as well as facilitate vs. dictate.
I wrote this in 1990. Tech will not replace a good T, but a good T who uses tech well will replace one who doesn't.
Some of what happened in 1-room schools beats some of what happens now.
yep, how can we imagine the future when we are steeped in the past? drives me nuts
. We also have enormous budget issues still constraining so many places. Many still getting worse.
Social media is dangerous for our students? Only if we focus on the neg & not the HUGE opportunity. https://t.co/Bn7HDjZfbU
We know this, but what's the next powerful question or next step for tech integration? https://t.co/RioHZGnUW1
Ed tech amplifies a teacher's capability--good or bad.
And books/content can take digital form. It is just that mere devices are not going to replace them. https://t.co/mm0cr1bPzX
I don't believe books should ever be fully replaced. However, I believe in adapting to new technologies as they evolve.
another ? is how can we support a system that continues to "fail" but what is true success, do we know?
This sounds right, but why is that distinction central to you in as far as is concerned
You know how we say good cops need to police bad cops. Same with teachers ok? Teachers need to fight for quality teachers.
Constructive feedback is positively correlated to increased self-efficacy.
gives Ss opportunities to participate in class when they might normally be hesitant or even resistant
No doubt. It was long-term relationships trumping all and true need to see everyone succeed.
Key to the quote is "good teacher." Thanks for sharing, Howard. https://t.co/hvn7IY3RQS
I wrote this in 1990. Tech will not replace a good T, but a good T who uses tech well will replace one who doesn't.
TECH won't change until educ changes. educ won't change until it embraces it's empirical knowledge.. start there
Agree Ts must shift from how to use tech to why to use tech https://t.co/5FDVoPWLMA
Be careful: Using technology doesn't necessarily make you a more effective teacher. Teaching isn't even close to that simple.
System failure is a myth propagated by reformers who gave us the test and punish culture.
We need to teach it as a literacy. It's really the new resume if we use it to showcase our work.
that design is starting to become apparent, but we are looking at changing that system of 150 years
I have spent a few decades of my career looking at the empirical knowledge and wonder why others don't.
. money will always be a problem until education is prioritized. Does the Defense Dept have a $ problem?
fair enough, but Ts have many excuses for being slow to make changes, what's the excuse of tech companies?
If Ts aren't using get Ss communicating outside of school walls, missing the boat. That alone will shift paradigm
I have been an EdTech Coach for almost a decade now. I'm ready for powerful shifts in instruction.
another example why it's so important for students to be emotionally and psychologically healthy https://t.co/ji3jhaddE3
safety first and education second or educate first and learn and question what keeps us safe?
Sometimes educators get stuck in using new tech in old ways (e.g. digital worksheets).
Edtech and allow for a new paradigm(s) but there is no magic.
Tech companies have made quantum leaps. Ed tech companies not so much. Think what Google knows about you.
TECH companies make what people buy...
You may not be "prepared" to integrate technology into your instruction, but your students are most definitely ready.
Apparently, things like tech and/or standards are not powerful enough to transform education. Has to be a cultural revolution.
Most tech is designed for one purpose, then repackaged for education...
plenty of Ts being pushed to teach in failing ways by inept systems, but it's only $ driving bad
When you invent something new (SM) you give people one more way to screw up. Both adults and students do so with SM.
noticed a shift in pedagogy? i try to work with Ts on understanding visible thinking and tech as a way to show it
Check out "Whole-brain teaching" in Ms. Roush's science class: https://t.co/6GCIMY5Hl5 How else can we use our body to learn?
So just told me that all she wants for Christmas is 2500 followers. She's worth the follow - I promise.
Tech tools allow for current information & connecting with world. My major concern is negative effects of too much screen time
It's a process and it takes time. I'm patient. I try and keep people comfortable.
WHERE IS THE TECHNOLOGY THAT MAKES IT EASIER FOR A TEACHER TO BE GOOD? Most tech makes teaching difficult
...while still advocating for effective instruction.
But they also promote their products and advertise to parents and schools, sometimes at expense of learners
You can learn lot's by just watching-Yogi Berra. Be empirical:Look. The Boob from YellowSubmarine
But easy to explain to someone that "gets it."
Most tech was never designed for the betterment of learning and with the T in mind. Built for the Central Office.
bummer, so are we saying that school districts have to shift their paradigm and shift the market?
effective is key, do we really need to make dioramas still or is their a better way to show Ss understanding?
If district demanded it, it would happen. Lack of vision at the top is an issue.
agreed, we need to have that thinking first, can't throw money at a problem if we can't think about how to solve it
Some think DefenseDept has $ prob. US spends more/kid than others. Not sure money is the prob
Yes! Ss use tech for personal learning, so why not leverage it for ideas? https://t.co/9cZrNUcIl4
You may not be "prepared" to integrate technology into your instruction, but your students are most definitely ready.
Yikes. Please add tri-folds and brochures to that list as well.
WHY SO LITTLE DATA about tech directly improving instructional quality / Ss learning? Perhaps tech doesn't improve either...
Tech companies are staffed by fast learners. No reason why they should understand real ed.
Improve your students’ performance by improving their skills. Register for tomorrow’s free : https://t.co/gotAiyYgEv
The future of industry is in the sharing of ideas. We must empower Ss to be ready for this! https://t.co/gmonwlN56c
Maybe teaching needs to be difficult. Isn't student learning and growth more important anyway?
ok but there are some awesome innovators out there, which they were the rule, not exception
they stay in the classroom, no one sees them but parents, make a video, create a website, write a story, ways to grow!
Will take more than a district (too small buying power)
First thing I noticed about tech was that I didn’t control the information anymore. Had to miss that.
Implement tech in classrooms in order to get this generation of students re-interested in school
Many innovators are hard to follow as they seem to damm smart to others. We need change agents.
We're changing the "magnet on the refrigerator" era.
sorry, did you say that TX is going to start an edu revolution? Forgive me for not holding my breath
. Those innovative ideas need to come first, but they also need to be funded at some point.
As a tech director in any individual situation that’s how I view it. It’s only in aggregate it becomes necessary
So many Ts struggle with that release of control over content/management. It's a difficult shift for many. https://t.co/84vWBo9BIL
First thing I noticed about tech was that I didn’t control the information anymore. Had to miss that.
IF STEVE JOBS, BILL GATES, LARRY ELLISON et al really cared about education they'd develop ed specific products
Advice 2 educators at various levels, young & old, take risks today 4 our Ss. They need U too! https://t.co/ZKwTkwMsSo
. (I myself was assessed better than most and was misdiagnosed with . On a mission to open many eyes now).
so spot on! we have to have Ss share ideas, but Ts must too! the system needs to change and these chats help https://t.co/GBA50o1Abz
The future of industry is in the sharing of ideas. We must empower Ss to be ready for this! https://t.co/gmonwlN56c
technology is a part of student's lives. As educators we must find ways to integrate in class https://t.co/fhDeBEw4tl
Technology won't replace teachers, but teachers who use technology well will replace those who refuse technology's impact.
Working with technology means I get to learn pretty much every day. I love that.
I think products are wrong approach. Ts need to stop looking for projects and look to design.
must help Ts to see benefit, can't say you are scared anymore, too many Ss can't think on their own to solve problems
. How many of the skills we teach kids today will not require tech knowledge for application in their world?
Three Reasons Hawaii Put the Brakes on Solar -- and Why the Same Won't Happen in Your State https://t.co/1hSM3thUTU
I just googled "texas school board" (;_・)smh
see that every day in how we document Ss learning, worksheets? or is there a better option?! can't say we can't do it
Thank you for participating in a delightful … join us tonight for another chat new topic. Shoutout to co-mod:
Yes, we need to be DIYers and facilitate DIY with Ss.
Look at the overall system. We focus on bad data and imprecise measurements..
Our goal should be to create self-directed learners so they can use the technology to take off.
and work posted in the hallways- We are making better strides with this year! next up- global :)
Modeling learning should be a priority for all teachers and admins. Great point.
This applies to teachers as well as students, in my opinion. https://t.co/Zbxjdl7ann
Our goal should be to create self-directed learners so they can use the technology to take off.
love it! this is a necessary trait of any creative innovator, the ability to diy something, Ts must emulate
How come kids spend hours on screens but still they aren't able to approve elementary & HS on those same devices?
You both have thought about this for way longer than I, is there really so little to hope for?
Everyone is insisting on innovation & that is rarely a free ride. Innovation rarely succeedss without the money.
When I walk into a kinder class and the students work is at student eye level that says a lot to me.
Data associated w/state tests is bad. Don’t waste time. Best data is gathered today
yep, when students feel space is their own, crazy awesome learning happens, changes lives!!
I agree, but our funding is tied to the worst possible data sources.
I empower teachers so they can empower their students. That's what I do.
Agreed! That has student-led written all over it!
Teach engaging lessons/let tests take care of themselves. Teach students to game tests
Or without facilitators to connect learning to subject matter. Prob need math & language at the least
YES. It's less about knowing everything--more about how to find out. I like it!
We’ve seen this five times. Please stop.
It says a lot. Student work posted at adult height tells a different story.
Writing? - Word processors are proven to speed up and improve the writing process in many ways over writing by hand.
Build assessments that measures what matters.Curiosity, creativity, understanding.
Also, long-term knowledge is necessary from problem solving.
Using tech (and learning as we go) serves as a wonderful model for never ending learning.
We're preparing Ss for their future, not our past. How are you leading schools into the "Networked Age?" https://t.co/D64ACBeCem
To get students to produce snazzier writing, teachers have started banning words in student writing. https://t.co/s8g1s2xROE
I have also seen studies that show spell checkers help learners to be better spellers. Worked for me I know.
Definitely. Having foundation knowledge committed to memory will always be important.
Playing devil's advocate... is adult height posted work a good or bad thing? Depends on audience??
Big thanks out to my friend and today's entire moderator team for his Herculean moderator skills.
& that’s not mentioning collaborative options of gdocs which are even more powerful. However even then tech not essential
Next step, connect foundational knowledge while using tech & make sure Ss know the connect
Keep up the good fight every day. We can win.
If your teaching inspires students to learn more, do more & become more, youre an awesome teacher
https://t.co/bFMbj3dR90
