#K12ArtChat wondering if this wonderful community could help me w/ a question... what does a school that supports the arts look like? What do you need to feel supported? I’m creating a list to jump start some research...TIA! #artsresearch
I don’t reallytbinknof my lessons that way. I spend the first week or so getting to know the kids and finding out what they want to learn and go from there. I do meet standards just don’t plan that way. #K12ArtChat
A1: Love to work with the idea of Responsibility and Voice! It gives Ss a way to realize how much of an impact they really have the power to make! #K12ArtChat@NAEA@TXarted
#K12artChat A1 Never havr taught art but what a great experience for us to have Philo Barnhart, creator of Ariel from The Little Mermaid & his friend Charles Moisant visit over a year ago. Talked about animation and how art is important in life. Great experience for our students
Me too! My #MakeItReal Chat is all about relevant learning and how to truly encourage meaningful learning. What better way than to encourage idea generation! #K12artChat

I don’t have an expectation per say. I tell my students just do your best and that I don’t want perfect I want you better than yesterday. For me is is just encouraging the process of creativity and seeing personal growth. #K12ArtChat
Hey #k12artchat! I miss you. Just working on a lesson plan inspired by Victoria Villasana... lost track of time. Nic Hahn, k-5 from Minnesota #makingItReal
Wonderful! There is almost no better place for a student to understand growth and learning than in art and music. It's constant progression to a final product of their best! #K12artChat#makeitreal
Q1- I LOVE using the standard that has ‘analyzing’ within it #K12ArtChat students Need to know that there’s SOOO Much More To Art, than just drawing a pretty picture, that sometimes ‘analyzing text’ to create art can yield interesting results, such as our Black Out Poetry Art
Many Art teachers were trained to have Ss follow step by step. There is the TAB movement which allows for more exploration but the transition can be tough on a fixed mindset. #K12ArtChat
A2: I have been working on the reflect aspect of the National Standards. I love using @Seesaw to help me see authentic reflection and assessment of my students learning! #K12ArtChat#MakeItReal
Q3: How do you incorporate your students' personal interests and passions into the products that they make when demonstrating their artistic understanding? #k12artchat#MakeItReal

A2 I enjoy watching Ss so excited to create, anything. Kids don't get enough time for creative play and exploration so they love their studio time to create! #K12ArtChat
I wonder that too, which is why I try my best to create projects utilizing content from other subjects, merged with subject areas of complete randomness. Rarely do I have my students ‘recreate famous artwork’, as I know my students are engaged More when THEY originally create art
My district is moving in this direction, and it feels like while some of my colleagues are aligned with the TAB philosophy, it’s a slow moving transition. It’s a process changing a huge chunk of what you do! #changeishard#k12artchat
A3: I have been using a 'Show Off' sheet for assessment this year. Students 'show me' the concept we learned in class in their own way, with their own subject, outside of class. Again... Trying to find authentic assessment. #K12ArtChat#MakeItReal
This is so interesting. As a long time math teacher I definitely see this in that area, but didn't know it was the same in ARt too! Starts me thinking... #K12artChat
A2- when teaching a standard, I expect my students to Not Just show Effort, but to PUSH THEIR CREATIVE LIMITS, for themselves and Not Just for a grade #K12ArtChat

Q4: This is a picture my daughter drew. She drew it because her mother loves Leonard Bernstein. She's 14 years old and hasn't taken any art classes. What examples do you have where personal passion and relevance lead to an amazing student outcome? #k12artchat#MakeItReal
A3: I like asking Ss open ended prompts that allow their interpretations, interests, & points of view to come through. & I stay open to the possibility of them redefining the entire thing as long as they are demonstrating building their skills (toward the Standards) #K12ArtChat

Yes! So important to move beyond a heavy focus on creating! I sometimes have to ‘remind myself/give myself permission’ to have students focus on presenting, responding, and connecting! #k12artchat

A3- There are ‘multiple levels’ within the projects I create for my students such as when I assign the project students choose from a predetermined list of items, then They Choose a subsection off that list, putting Their ideas paired with the end goals of the project #K12ArtChat
Love these! Letting our students personal interest and relevant connections become a part of their learning is a great way to build momentum! #K12artChat
I hate to go before the end, but bed time reading is calling. Thanks for the great questions #K12ArtChat I look forward to checking back in tomorrow to see what I missed.
#A4#k12artchat I love to give students an opportunity to share their voice and personal expression. Whether prompted to share memories, goals, dreams or fears.... students always impress me with their willingness to share!
A2: I encourage exploration. I can't stand 'cookie cutter' art where students have no voice or choice. I push for 'better than they expect'. High expectations= high quality art=high self esteem= success #k12ArtChat
Q4 images on cameras school but this price made the student want to do big more complex and is talking about entering VASE because he finally feels solid about a medium. #K12ArtChat
A4 my Ss were inspired by a book their class read about 911. some drew, some painted some did collage many combined several mediums. I love offering choices #K12ArtChat
Q3: My lessons are so open ended and Ss have so many options it automatically yields student voice When they hate an assignment I we discuss the standard and come up with a personal plan to compromise. #k12ArtChat
A4- I saw personal passion for Creating Something From Nothing #K12ArtChat as this student built in meaning, in great depth. This told me So Much about this students understanding of Analyzing Text to Incorporate Hidden Meaning. This was a 1 Day Drawing on the 1st Day Of School !
A6 my passions I support and promote my artist runs deep. My students know it. We hosted our student directed parent art class event tonight. #k12ArtChat
A5: My 4th gas last yr, made tiny homes( learning abt use of space) my 5th gas made memory boxes for yrs in Elementary school. (Cornel boxes) #K12ArtChat
A4: This #grade2 student is interested in highway interchanges. He’s been working on a series of drawings inspired by aerial views. I’m so intrigued by the way he views the world and his passions. #k12artchat#MakeItReal#tabart
Q6. Is my struggle- my own creations tend to be pushed aside but I always nerd out about art and its relationship to other topics in class each day. #K12ArtChat
A5- I gave my Art 2 students Total Creative Power, under my guidance of course, to design & paint our Fine Arts Department Murals #K12ArtChathttps://t.co/w4mNkWJJiC
A4: My all time fav was when my Ss drew portraits of seniors (they had never met) in their glory days and gave them as gifts. They made amazing bonds and made so many pwople happy. I loved the old military and red cross images. #k12ArtChat
A6- My students see MY PASSION for Art because I’m ‘in the struggle with them’ creating projects side by side each of them, guiding them through their own struggles as well. #K12ArtChat I made these 3 wheel thrown pots for our Pit Fire 🔥 this past October https://t.co/NKNuVCKxH4
