Search engines have made content very accessible. Unfortunately, the content isnt vetted. So they have flooded the Internet with easy access and have created an additional layer for us to teach about #Edchat
So excited to check in tonight. As a media teacher i always felt a great obligation to teach kids how to be good consumers of what they find on the internet #Edchat
Started following #edchat at the suggestion of a colleague. Here's a video I found on differentiated instruction that provides some great visuals illustrating to make this happen in a way that feels manageable.
We have awesome teachers who commit themselves to serve our scholars with a work of heart! Our Band Teacher, Ms. Hanna, is nothing short of amazing! Our 6th graders leave us knowing how to read and play music and some have already started with SHS Band in 7th grade! #TeamSelma
For students now Google is the first thing they use when looking up information rather than using a textbook. We just have to educate our students on the validity of the sources. #Edchat
Finding facts is easier. KNOWING facts is actually harder. Why? The harder it is to acquire knowledge, the more easily it is recalled. This is researched and solid.
Before thinking deeply, one must KNOW something to think deeply about! #edchat
When I was an administrator in international schools I found search engines kept me "in touch," but the quality of information remains a problem, just like with brick and mortar libraries/sources. So important to teach students and educators media/tech literacy. #edchat
Depends on who you ask. Search engines have changed teacher practices significantly for some and not at all for others. All our lives are indisputably different thanks to google & I hope school catches up to incorporate real time Q&A/for fighting in learning contexts #Edchat
Rather than complaining about students “Googling” answers or cheating, tchrs need to create Google-proof assignment that require students to DO something w/info. #edchat
In Montgomery County students would be able to miss 3 days of school for protest purposes. And students already have plans to use those days. https://t.co/Ib4IYOnw88#edchat
Everyone is talking about Google, but the YouTube part of the topic tonight is fascinating. Great tutorial videos exist on every subject, often more engaging than your IRL teacher. #edchat
I teach math. I've changed nothing because of Google searches.
Just out curiosity.....who was asking questions that Google could answer but an encyclopedia couldn't? Really.......has much changed?? I think this is over-estimated. #edchat
Wow.....I want to say that I'm surprised, but I know we are all doing what we think is best. I hope those Ts come to realize that they can use Google to increase S learning and do so in the future. #Edchat
Sources like google and youtube do allow students to assess different information from various sources. It really does allow them to practice their critical thinking skills when looking at the information they are reading.
The search engines are great for doing research, writing books, etc. The Internet in general empowers educators to do research from remote locations (and home!), which is great. But...as always, there is a down side: Do we always want our home to be our office? #edchat
Online access in class is a must! We can't teach them to swim if we don't let them in the pool. Let them sink a few times. The point will be made. #edchat

Trillions must be invested in a public works program to hire tens of thousands of #Teachers and staff with quality wages and benefits, reduce class sizes, repair older schools, build new ones, and equip all schools with new books and learning technology. https://t.co/phTd29fmm8
Wasn't the same true for encyclopedias when we were in school? What is so different now in terms of ease of access? (NOT saying the accuracy of info is the same) #Edchat
WELL...teaching a student to use a search engine and other applications is no substitute for teaching a student to search, investigate, synthesize, etc. #edchat
hence the lifelong learners! This is a skill everyone is using in many occupations. So having them learn how to analyze information online by using search engines will help them develop that skill of accessing information #edchat
Search engines and teaching: YouTube can be great to reduce teacher isolation, and to see modeling of effective teaching. But as always, we need to be skeptical. A slick "Presentation" doesn't mean the meal is better (lol). #edchat
Helps both me and the students immensely with ease of collaboration, feedback, and organization. But I still stress the importance of handwriting and also reading tactile materials. No way I will go to 100% digital reading. At least at this point... #edchat#edtech
"I realized, despite having many great experiences as a young learner myself in a school-centered environment, there was a ceiling to that system that could never be breached." @JoshEckerhttps://t.co/D8dsbWhxh4#edreimagined#edchat
Exactly. That's why I refuse to judge those Ts. I want to believe they are doing the best they can with what they have. In our district and surrounding areas we have been learning about Instructional Conversations and importance of rich convos. #Edchat
It has opened up the world and allowed Ss and Ts to learn from people from around the world. Ts just have to decipher good content from bad content. #edchat
what a great add on! It is very important to learn those library skills because like mentioned we are teaching our students to be lifelong learners... this includes all the way to college and into their profession #edchat
S’s were put to work building! Each construction crew built a house out of PV blocks. Unfortunately the houses were destroyed! Crews then determined the value of their home & wrote the decimal 3 ways. Last crews ordered the values from least 2 greatest! @BlueHazeWSISD#iteachmath
Let's remember, as educators, we are part of the national conversation on the pros/cons of social media; Google and YouTube cannot be separated from that conversation. Key questions to ask students are: What is the reason for a site? Motivation/Purpose of a source? #edchat
Librarians are tremendous resources foe students when it comes to mining for good information. Kids go foe immediate. They need to go for deeper #edchat
This is so true! I find myself working longer hours when I bring my laptop home b/c I have the access to vpn to the network than when we didn't have laptops and vpn! #Edchat
The search engines are great for doing research, writing books, etc. The Internet in general empowers educators to do research from remote locations (and home!), which is great. But...as always, there is a down side: Do we always want our home to be our office? #edchat
yes! I agree Librarians are a great resource for both students and teachers! It allows us to plan and prepare lessons to help our students dive deeper into the topic rather than just finding the answer. #edchat
Pedagogy should drive "technology." When using search engines we first have to ask: Is the search engine an effective tool for this lesson; for my long-term instructional & curriculum goals to meet student needs? Should I be using other tools to meet student needs? #edchat
I agree that lack of internet access is more of a hinderance. I have colleagues who say, "their parents have cell phones--they have internet." My response, "do you really think their Ps are going to allow them to use their data for hw?" #Edchat
This reminds me of “teaching to the test” Is it now that we teach to “internet engines”? What you can find it what you need to know? I hope not! #edchat
The Ts who get upset becUse the S just looked up the answers....if you found the worksheet on the net, why can’t S find answers to it? The cycle is sad to watch #edchat
Search engines and YouTube have helped students go beyond what is taught in the classroom. There are those that really want to learn more about a concept and use those sites to do so. #edchat
Networked knowledge and the smartest person is the room have definitely influenced how we approach teaching. We respect the room full of learners who have access to question, challenge, and contribute. #edchat
Consider: Google and YouTube are now state of the art resources. In time they will be archaic. Are we teaching students skills for that future time? For success when they travel to uncharted territory? What are the timeless and practical critical thinking skills? #edchat
That's a great idea! In general, I think those skills needed to successfully analyze and assess information when searching on Google or Youtube are great skills everyone needs in general. #edchat
Access to search engines has made me a better teacher, following along with someone I made for them to see where they'll get stuck and where I'll need to help them 'unlock their inner Sherlock 🕵️♀️' to find answers and to create habits of life long learning #Edchat
We don't need to teach kids WHAT to learn, but it is of greater benefit to teach them HOW to learn. They have their own stuff they need to learn. Search engines are essential. #Edchat
We recognize that we are learners just like the students we engage with on a daily basis. We have students with passions and expertise, and they might just know more than we do sometimes. That's okay. #edchat
Search engines is what people go to immediately now and I agree, teachers should challenge the students for a deeper understanding on that topic. #edchat

I feel like a dinosaur! It honestly hasn't occurred to me to look up a recipe on YouTube. I have googled recipes, but I wonder why never YT? Hmmmm #Edchat

Great point. That is why I often bring up the Q: What are the timeless and practical critical thinking skills that can be used 2 assess the past (dated), present, & future search engine/research options? What key Q must always b asked: Purpose of source? Credible? Motive? #edchat
Next #AODL chat is this Wednesday, 9/12 @ 9pm EST. Topic: Problem-based Teaching and Learning. We will explore the research behind problem-based teaching and how to redesign tasks and present students with real-world, relevant learning experiences.
Not so much in ES. I have Ts sharing misinformation (or perhaps whitewashed information is more accurate) that I think to myself (YOU can look up the truth. I HOPE a kid calls you on it! #Edchat
Tom, you have inspired me! I got a pressure cooker as a wedding present that I have NEVER used (in 19 years)! I will YT some videos and FINALLY use it!!! #Edchat
This reminds me of “teaching to the test” Is it now that we teach to “internet engines”? What you can find it what you need to know? I hope not! #edchat

I agree we are all potential learners, however adult learning is different from kids' learning in many respects especially in choice and motivation. #Edchat
Any person can find information ... being able to understand what that information means is key. We need to ask better questions if we want better answers #edchat
It's important that we embrace the fact that learning is not restricted to the classroom; that students can bring a lot to the table, and our job as educators is to listen and facilitate the process. #edchat
"One of the most common questions we receive this time of year is how teachers should handle placement (levels and goals) for students who are returning to Read Naturally programs."
https://t.co/v8sgzgJLTA#EdChat
Yes: The "How to Learn" is a timeless teaching objectives. An important and challenging question is: What are some other timeless or enduring teaching objectives? (Maybe a topic for an edchat?) #edchat
We don't need to teach kids WHAT to learn, but it is of greater benefit to teach them HOW to learn. They have their own stuff they need to learn. Search engines are essential. #Edchat

Independent reading accountability piece! (Notebooks w/ standards-based response starters as well!) Students will record the title of their book and start dates 😀👍🏼📚 Note that I am also on the chart 😅 Gotta lead by example! #EdChat#T2T#ITeachToo
#ishcmcStudio5 Ss are in the driver's seat for their first reports. Advisors support #studentagency by offering workshops to support the process. Using digital tools, like @GoogleKeep or @poppletny to brainstorm was one. ❤️ the workflow of this learner! #edchat#pypchat
We are huge proponents of student choice, and motivation definitely goes through the roof when they have it. Can you imagine what school could be if there was more choice for both teachers and students? Learning for both goes up! #edchat
