Methods of meeting the needs of every student in your class, below level, on level, AND above level #pln365
  • Shapiro_WTHS Sep 18 @ 8:39 PM EDT
A1 - To me differentiation is providing students the opportunity and passion to explore how they learn and grow as a person. It’s about empowering them with ideas and tools that they may not have believed they have. #teachpos #pln365
  • PaulONeill1972 - Moderator Sep 18 @ 8:39 PM EDT
SAFE! Good to see you, my man! All is good here. #pln365

A1: When school changes to fit kids...instead of kids changing to fit school. #pln365
  • PaulONeill1972 - Moderator Sep 18 @ 8:40 PM EDT
Please disregard this question. Was doing a Tweetdeck check. #pln365

Hey Cathi! Glad you could make it. #pln365
    In reply to @Cathig8r
  • Cathig8r Sep 18 @ 8:40 PM EDT
A1 Differentiation requires you to know your Ss and their individual abilities and then modify assignments and strategies so every S can succeed and grow. #pln365

  • PaulONeill1972 - Moderator Sep 18 @ 8:41 PM EDT
Next question coming up in 60 seconds. #pln365
  • KanakoSuwa Sep 18 @ 8:41 PM EDT
A1) Ss are engaged, voluntarily participated in discussions and activities without Ts nagging them to begin/stay on task. Ss help each other before asking Ts for help = creating a student centred, student led classroom. #pln365
  • JWMcMillan803 Sep 18 @ 8:41 PM EDT
A1: One where Ss are helping each other instead of competing. One where there are rules, but Ss keep each other in check, with little intervention from the T. #pln365
    In reply to @PaulONeill1972
  • PaulONeill1972 - Moderator Sep 18 @ 8:42 PM EDT
Q2: What advice would you give a teacher who is reluctant to shift from a compliance based classroom culture to one based on competency? #pln365
  • emilyfranESL Sep 18 @ 8:42 PM EDT
A1: Differentiation is carefully and strategically planned activities that serve as opportunities for students’ equal access to content #pln365
  • michelelkelly Sep 18 @ 8:43 PM EDT
A1: Students know they can take risks. They are ok with failing, and learn from the experiences. They learn, collaborate, and want to share. Mistakes are not only ok, they are expected. #pln365
  • PaulONeill1972 - Moderator Sep 18 @ 8:44 PM EDT
Always good to see you, Craig! #pln365
    In reply to @Shapiro_WTHS
  • D4Griffin3 Sep 18 @ 8:44 PM EDT
A2) I would begin by asking them tell me how passionate and engaged are you when you have to comply with expectations? Now you know how your students feel. #pln365
  • PaulONeill1972 - Moderator Sep 18 @ 8:44 PM EDT
    Love that last line. #pln365
    In reply to @michelelkelly
  • ItsAMrY Sep 18 @ 8:45 PM EDT
To be fair, I would wonder what kind of administration this T had experienced. The T may be passing on the environment he or she is simmering in. #pln365
    • PaulONeill1972 - Moderator Sep 18 @ 8:42 PM EDT
Q2: What advice would you give a teacher who is reluctant to shift from a compliance based classroom culture to one based on competency? #pln365
  • KanakoSuwa Sep 18 @ 8:45 PM EDT
A2) if Ss are learning reluctantly (compliance based), they aren’t really engaged or taking ownership of their learning. Let them take the wheels for a bit, start with little things like independent learning stations, and see the difference it makes when Ss take charge. #pln365
  • PaulONeill1972 - Moderator Sep 18 @ 8:45 PM EDT
I like that strategy, my friend. #pln365
    In reply to @D4Griffin3
  • D4Griffin3 Sep 18 @ 8:45 PM EDT
A2) Do you understand the limitations of feedback in a compliance mode of instruction? #pln365 #TweetsThatLead

Next question coming up in 60 seconds. #pln365
  • MissG_edu Sep 18 @ 8:47 PM EDT
A1: Student goals are posted, successes are celebrated, students are comfortable contributing to class discussions & asking q’s, and respect is given and received to all by all without question. #PositiveVibesOnly #pln365
    In reply to @PaulONeill1972
  • michelelkelly Sep 18 @ 8:47 PM EDT
A2: Tell them that unless Ss feel like they can fail and not risk disappointment in your eyes, then they cannot truly ever learn from you. #pln365
  • Shapiro_WTHS Sep 18 @ 8:47 PM EDT
A2 - I’d say this: Do you want students to love learning, bring energy to class, be inspired by your instruction and feel empowered to learn? If yes, compliance will never be the answer. We want kids to be risk takers and dream makers. #pln365
  • JWMcMillan803 Sep 18 @ 8:47 PM EDT
A2: "Do you enjoy having to play bad cop every day?" "Do you want students to reach their max potential with no ceiling or be limited by what you say they can do?" #pln365

Q3: How can a competency based classroom culture impact student proficiency? #pln365
  • emilyfranESL Sep 18 @ 8:48 PM EDT
A2: I would buy this teacher @dbc_inc books! She/he might just need a little inspiration. Passion is not learned in college. #pln365
    • PaulONeill1972 - Moderator Sep 18 @ 8:42 PM EDT

And the harm that this causes. #pln365
    In reply to @D4Griffin3
  • sew1080 Sep 18 @ 8:49 PM EDT
Iwould ask them when is compliance vital? That's really the only time it's needed. Then encourage them to shift to engagement. #pln365
  • sew1080 Sep 18 @ 8:50 PM EDT
A3 Students are playing the game of school when they are in a zone of compliance. They might show proficiency, but at what cost? #pln365
  • PaulONeill1972 - Moderator Sep 18 @ 8:51 PM EDT
I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing this in person. Your classroom culture screams of growth mindset and positivity. #pln365 ❤️it
    In reply to @MissG_edu
  • Shapiro_WTHS Sep 18 @ 8:51 PM EDT
A3 - Students must feel like they are accomplishing goals and learning. Sometimes this gets lost in education. When competency and mastery occur in a classroom , the culture and pride that’s felt can transform a school. Pride is a huge factor in human growth. #pln365
  • Cathig8r Sep 18 @ 8:51 PM EDT
A2 The world has evolved. Education needs to evolve with it. Ts need to develop Ss who are risk takers Can communicate and collaborat need critical thinking skills to solve problems Doing things as they have always been done does not serve their long-term success. #pln365
    In reply to @PaulONeill1972
  • PaulONeill1972 - Moderator Sep 18 @ 8:51 PM EDT

    In reply to @michelelkelly
  • michelelkelly Sep 18 @ 8:52 PM EDT
A3: It creates a culture of collaboration, creativity, flexibility, resilience. These, along with a risk-free zone to try new things facilitate a whole new level of proficiency. #pln365
  • KanakoSuwa Sep 18 @ 8:52 PM EDT
A3) Ss will learn to be risk-takers, unafraid to give things a go, to tackle challenges with an open mind. This could lead to academic proficiency and achievement, as well as Ss growing as individuals! #PLN365
  • PaulONeill1972 - Moderator Sep 18 @ 8:53 PM EDT

Q4: How does a competency based culture improve student interaction with curriculum? #pln365
  • JWMcMillan803 Sep 18 @ 8:54 PM EDT
A3: It takes time, especially when they have been doing/playing school a long time, but Ss see a reason to want to learn more/deeper. #pln365
    In reply to @PaulONeill1972

  • KanakoSuwa Sep 18 @ 8:57 PM EDT
A4) Because competency based learning = demonstrating mastery, Ss will be well-versed in the curriculum they engage in, rather than a unit ending because 6 weeks have passed even if Ss haven't gained all the skills and knowledge. #PLN365
  • michelelkelly Sep 18 @ 8:57 PM EDT
A4: More choice, more interest, more engagement. Students are far more likely to connect to curriculum that they have a say in learning. Voice. #pln365
  • Shapiro_WTHS Sep 18 @ 8:58 PM EDT
A4 - Confidence for kids is huge. When students feel accomplished and have pride, the results are not just change for them, both for others as well. We feed off of positive energy. #pln365
  • michelelkelly Sep 18 @ 8:58 PM EDT
If only everyone felt this way... #pln365
    In reply to @Shapiro_WTHS
  • Cathig8r Sep 18 @ 8:59 PM EDT
A3 Competency allows individuals to succeed at their own levels by utilizing their own talents. Everyone learns differently, hence the importance of differentiation. #pln365
    In reply to @PaulONeill1972
  • MrSeanOlson Sep 18 @ 8:59 PM EDT
A4: Ss become more engaged and motivated to be challenged within the curriculum. Ss have less stress of always feeling forced to perform before a deadline and more in control of achieving higher standards at their pace. #pln365
  • JWMcMillan803 Sep 18 @ 8:59 PM EDT
A4: There is not one pathway to one solution. There are multiple pathways to multiple outcomes. #pln365

A4 Success begets success. Competency based learning allows Ss to start where they are, grow and experience success at their level. That success then encourages Ss to WANT to learn more & experience more success. That attitude is the key to a life of learning & success. #pln365
    In reply to @PaulONeill1972

A4: A competency based culture allows students to feel safe, supported & valued. When these needs are met and students feel their teacher believes in them, they are more likely to excel academically and socially, with the curriculum and with their peers. #pln365

#pln365 A4- I agree if Ss feel successful, they gain confidence. With that confidence the desire to learn more becomes more imminent
