#DevDiscuss All of the people I consider mentors have been so by a fluke. I have had many formal mentors who have had zero effect on me.
  • ThePracticalDev Jun 20 @ 9:06 PM EDT
Have you had experience being a mentor or a mentee in your software career? What was it like? If not, why? #DevDiscuss
  • kimberlypilbeam Jun 20 @ 9:06 PM EDT
Finding a mentor is so incredibly important. Find someone you can look up to, talk to about career paths, and seek advice from. #DevDiscuss
  • ChiSenires Jun 20 @ 9:06 PM EDT
#DevDiscuss up till now, I still don't know who I can consider my mentor.
  • ChiSenires Jun 20 @ 9:07 PM EDT
There are people I look up to, ask advice from... but they come and go, I guess? #DevDiscuss
  • ChiSenires Jun 20 @ 9:08 PM EDT
Or maybe I'm just shy to keep asking them questions πŸ˜… I always worry that I might bother them if I keep asking their advice #DevDiscuss
  • kimberlypilbeam Jun 20 @ 9:08 PM EDT
Being a mentor is a rewarding job. You get to see a young caterpillar πŸ› turn into a beautiful butterfly πŸ¦‹ #DevDiscuss
  • bendhalpern Jun 20 @ 9:09 PM EDT
I've had more experience mentoring than receiving because I'm bad at asking for help, but lately I've been doing some of both 😊 #DevDiscuss
    • ThePracticalDev Jun 20 @ 9:06 PM EDT

  • phillipcjohnson Jun 20 @ 9:10 PM EDT
Lucky to have had 2 unofficial mentors. A non-technical boss helped me grow as a person, a Sr. Dev. helped me grow as a dev. πŸ‘#DevDiscuss

  • Pahimar Jun 20 @ 9:10 PM EDT
I have! It was great! After I got over the initial "omg I'm so dumb" feeling I began to learn so much. I gained a friend too! #DevDiscuss

This is my fear as well when it comes to my mentors as well.... I have so much to ask but don't want to bother them #devdiscuss

  • bendhalpern Jun 20 @ 9:11 PM EDT
Receiving mentorship is awesome and I plan to seek it out more! Anybody wanna mentor me?!? ❀️ #DevDiscuss
  • courtneyxann Jun 20 @ 9:11 PM EDT
I've mentored 2 interns so far. It's good to form a partnership with them & make sure it is two sided. (Learn from them too) #devdiscuss

  • kimberlypilbeam Jun 20 @ 9:11 PM EDT
Finding a mentor is usually more successful than being assigned a mentor. There's chemistry you need to communicate freely. #DevDiscuss
  • DiganLuispa Jun 20 @ 9:11 PM EDT
A good mentor starts with the fundamental first always. #DevDiscuss
  • KPath001 Jun 20 @ 9:12 PM EDT
I'll take some of that mentorship if you are giving those away haha #devdiscuss
    In reply to @bendhalpern
  • cecilianempire Jun 20 @ 9:12 PM EDT
Challenging to find "the right" mentor since there is much to know in dev & luckily this world thrives on circulated info #devdiscuss

#devdiscuss mentoring was my favorite part of my last job and the only part I truly miss

  • michaelsoolee Jun 20 @ 9:13 PM EDT
Yup. Mentored a few weeks ago for the 1st time. Wasn't bad. Mentee was patient & I learned that I knew more than I thought #devdiscuss

  • michaelsoolee Jun 20 @ 9:14 PM EDT
Also have learned in the past w/being ok about saying I don't know. But try to follow up since you want to help mentee succeed #devdiscuss

  • grmpyprogrammer Jun 20 @ 9:14 PM EDT
Really depends on how much help you want to give. I've done it from simple email threads to Skype sessions every other week #DevDiscuss

  • Wintermute21 Jun 20 @ 9:15 PM EDT
Also in my experience, they have to want to mentor you, and you have to get on well with them anyway, otherwise it will be awks #devdiscuss

I was a formal mentor last summer, but the program was poorly planned. 2 strangers in a mentorship need a plan. #DevDiscuss

Never had a mentor, wish I had. I guess I inspired myself in some other devs, but no mentorship relation with them. #DevDiscuss

I once organized a women in tech mentorship program. Mentees sign up like crazy, but it's WAY difficult to galvanize mentors. #DevDiscuss

#DevDiscuss I tutored CS at my university. It was one of the most rewarding experiences, right next to solving problems with code
    In reply to @ThePracticalDev
  • techgirl1908 Jun 20 @ 9:26 PM EDT
I've been both. An important thing I've learned is that it's critical for the mentee to drive the relationship. Be proactive. #DevDiscuss

I don't expect (or want) my mentors to check on me every X weeks. I go to them when I need them and have a very clear agenda. #DevDiscuss
  • kimberlypilbeam Jun 20 @ 9:31 PM EDT
Not all my mentors are in tech either. Find someone who has successfully navigated your struggles. Can even be famous. #DevDiscuss
  • alainakafkes Jun 20 @ 9:32 PM EDT
Another thought (and not just for women): mentorship isn't the full package. Sponsorship matters, too! #DevDiscuss https://t.co/aLrOFxAamf

I also think it's good in the beginning to meet once a month or whatever just to build a relationship. #devdiscuss

It's weird to call someone a mentor. It kind of "makes it official" 😳 #DevDiscuss
  • KPath001 Jun 20 @ 9:36 PM EDT
I agree initially it was super helpful when my mentor setup interval meeting sessions and built a healthy relationship #devdiscuss

#DevDiscuss Each mentor I'm paired with leaves the company before we even get started. I don't think I'm that repulsive?
