Hi all! Michelle, ELA teacher and literacy coach at HMS in Berwyn. I'm snowed in for spring break in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, excited to connect with you! :-) #d100chat
This is Rhea 1st grade dual teacher from EME taking a break from my to do list. Actually, added this chat to my list so I could cross it off. #d100chat
A1: My kids are blogging, and just completed the slice of life challenge with the Two Writing Teaches blog! a few of our students wrote every day in march - find their blogs here: https://t.co/K5mwmbIOpJ#d100chat
A1: I work with teachers like @mrsninan1@ms_colletti to help support them as they are looking to give Ss more ownership on what and WHEN they create - I think it’s ab giving Ss the skills to know when and options ab ‘how’ #AppleEDUChat#d100pride#d100chat
A1: I use Twitter to foster connections but then I use any tool that works (Padlet, Google Hangouts, Skype, Docs, Slides, Flipgrid, Voxer) to get us talking, sharing, creating, and learning with other students & classes around the world. #D100chat
A1: Began using Flipgrid. Students enjoy reading their original essays for others to hear, and sharing their thoughts and ideas with each other. Integrating it with Chatterpix was also fun! Also Kidblog to share comments of discussion questions. Quiet students shine! #d100chat
A1: In first grade @seesaw is the quickest to implement. @jg_jgarret I have wanted to set up a mystery skype with a classroom in a Spanish speaking country.
#d100chat
A1: Students connect with other students on @PenpalSchools and @Flipgrid! They love meeting authors via Twitter and Skyping with them in the classroom! Thanks @laurenTarshis for this awesome opportunity!! #D100Chat
A1 I love how Kidblog connects kids, sometimes in one class, sometimes across classes, and sometimes outside of school. I like that you can have the variety in audience, and it gives a private post option too. #d100chat
A1: I love using @Flipgrid to connect Ss. We have done several collaborative projects, sharing music w/ other Ss and schools. I also use @Padlet#d100chat
A1 Skype and Google Hangouts are our tools for global collaboration. We have a blog set up in Seesaw but I haven't connected outside our class yet. We also participated in Buncee Buddies program too. #D100chat
A1: I have seen twitter and paddle with flip grid used well in classrooms. Teachers show excitement in communicating the Ss and share it with them are the best #d100chat
I think HMS had close to 75 students blog EVERY day in March! Totally exceeded my expectations! And, a few new teacher bloggers - @dhaury2@abortscheller and @MsCaprarola :-) #d100chat
In reply to
@maryhavis, @BerwynSouth100, @dhaury2, @abortscheller, @MsCaprarola
A1: Some great tools to connect globally are Google Hangout, @Flipgrid, @PenpalSchools and of course twitter. Also, @TED_ED clubs provide a great community to globally connect and share ideas that students are passionate about! #d100chat
A1: having my Ss maintain math blogs was awesome. They learned to comment on each others’ blogs and give feedback. Great for collaboration, connecting, &learning. #D100chat
A2: One barrier to social media in school, sometimes I get so involved in it, I miss actual moments. You have to remember the screen-real life balance! #d100chat
A2: I try to teach/drill/help the students understand that what you put out there is out there forever. People see it and it portrays who you are. I think that supervised guidance is a way to bring awareness. #thinkbeforeyouclick#d100chat
A2: Fear. Henry Jenkins in Participatory Cultures in a Networked Era says we are shutting down meaningful opportunities for young people out of a moral panic of technological and cultural change. Courageous Convos needed! #D100chat
so far sharing music they love to play (I teach band/orchestra) but we are working on a composition project now, so they will be sharing created music soon! #d100chat
A1: Many teachers and students in the district have loved trying @PenpalSchools. Students are also loving the @Flipgrid explorer series and the new global grid connections. Also, partnering with friends who teach in other countries. #d100chat#innovate135
A2: Perceived (and real) parental pushback. Requires transparency and a clear vision. A concerned parent asked me here: https://t.co/Ke0G76zQax#D100chat
There is also a "Mystery Location Calls" community on Google Plus: https://t.co/WW8mC03Tbu which uses Google Hangouts to connect if that's easier in your District #d100chat
A2: Barriers such as Ss not utilizing the connections of social media instead of: “see my new filter? I’m a bunny!” The see it as: “share share share.” and not: “I was able to talk to a person studying nursing at the college I want to go to.” #D100chat
Definitely! Beyond the one-time connection, Mystery Skype is a "gateway" to more long terms connections: share about seasons, favourite books, holidays, etc...#d100chat
A2: I think many parents (and teachers!) are afraid of social media, and the idea of Ss involved with it. Understanding that it can be a learning tool is tough for many #d100chat
A2: kids need to be 13 for a Twitter account... but there are ways to access the benefits of social media if they are younger. Here’s one idea: https://t.co/t7UscvMzL8#d100chat
That's why I typically only tweet at night as a reflection tool! I don't want Twitter to replace relationships with real people, yet I like to share the story of @BerwynSouth100 too. #balance#d100pride#d100chat#BePresent
A2: One barrier to social media in school, sometimes I get so involved in it, I miss actual moments. You have to remember the screen-real life balance! #d100chat
A3: I think you can certainly use social media to build relationships. Tweeting and using IG to share success with a wider audience and show people you care, definitely a perk :-) #d100chat
Q3: Digital Leadership is about making a positive difference in someone's life. What are some of the ways we can use tech & social media to have a positive impact on others? #D100chat
A2: Digital Citizenship is critical. i love that we have a PBIS cool tool that teaches and reteaches the expectations. @ColleenCook82@samshuman24#d100chat
A3: Student/Staff Celebrations and Shoutouts! What is something someone awesome is doing?! Share it with the world! Show that they are appreciated and noticed! #D100Chat
A2: I think it opens a lot of great conversations to be had on Digital Citizenship. It can also be intimidating for faculty to start, but sharing is so powerful too. #D100chat
A3: I make a point of reaching out to my #PLN/PLF when I know they are having a hard time, have suffered a loss, or just to say how much they mean to me. #D100chat
A3: Chats like these allow us to connect with and learn from other educators regularly. The positive impact we have on each other is powerful. That makes a difference. #d100chat
A2: Gary, former Supt, now trainer for character. Have a large SD that I have been working with now for almost 2 years where the majority of principals will not use Twitter of Facebook bc of fears central office will disagree w. what they share. #D100chat
A3: Ss that have been sick and had to stay home for longer periods of time certainly benefit from social media interactions with teacher and classmates.
#d100chat
A3 I have seen people use Twitter to get ideas from each other. Not only does this support collaboration (even from down the hall) but it also maximizes time spent planning. Ideas from coworkers help us find our own plan, too. #d100chat
A3 We can make positive differences using social media by breaking down our classroom walls and working on projects together like @TeachSDGs@Belouga_#D100chat
A3: Ss enjoy reading positive comments about their work from parents and peers. Make sure that their work is seen-Tech makes it easy to share with parents, no more papers shoved in the backpack #d100chat
A3 Our district hashtag, and our school hashtags, help us build our community. I love that we are a part of something bigger than ourselves. #d100pride#d100chat#BetterTogether
Celebrations! Wouldn't it be awesome if each school/ district used a # to celebrate each other, their students, great lessons, great teaching, etc. Could inspire! #D100chat
A3: Something as simple as a thank you for an awesome co-teaching lesson. Our district vanguard members built Google Sites to share their PL with their buildings. I love when teachers are excited to share what they have created, but how they can continue to use it. #d100chat
A3: It’s important to share your good message online - the more positive you post the more positive your image is - if you Aren’t putting something positive out there to build your portfolio then who is? #d100chat
A3: You can use your social media account to promote/amplify others. I often use my account to simply retweet voices that I think need to be amplified, especially underrepresented voices in edu. #d100chat
Q3: Digital Leadership is about making a positive difference in someone's life. What are some of the ways we can use tech & social media to have a positive impact on others? #D100chat
I agree Justin! We are currently reading #KidsDeserveIt & we talked about calling home to celebrate the kids! We need to celebrate each other as Ts as well and share what we are doing! I love this video: https://t.co/RomR7cAkIn
A2: @JCasaTodd I had a major ah-ha after listening to you on @gcouros podcast. Teachers are afraid of the mistakes students will make, but those are the learning opportunities to teach them how to behave and respond to social media. #d100chat
A3 Ts in our district use Twitter & it has helped teachers connect across our 8 buildings in real life, too! We don' wait until Institute Days to communicate anymore. I've see SM result in classroom visits, emails, texts, and face to face conversations. #d100chat#d100pride
A4: One of my 3rd graders completed an Independent Passion Project. She chose a topic she loved (Mexican culture), researched it, Interviewed family members, created art work, and presented on Explain Everything. She was one proud young lady! #d100chat
A4 Our Book Club worked hard to raise funds for solar-powered speakers, MP3 player. Recorded favourite stories for school in Uganda @COHU_Official#literacy#D100chat
A4: Towards the end of our Holocaust unit, I ask kids to pick something within that topic they'd like to know more about, and research and share. Also, when writing Memoir and NF, kids get choice in what they study #d100chat
A4: They were psyched when they finished their informational texts about the Sun, Moon and stars. Anything they make themselves they are proud of. #d100chat
A4: My students really enjoyed their 3D design unit that we did. 2 years ago, I had a student inspired to build a prosthetic for himself. Couldn't be more proud of him and I loved sharing that experience. #D100chat
A3: Leaders leverage social media tools to create a positive brand presence to emphasize positive aspects of school culture, increases community pride & helps to attract/retain families when looking for a place to send their children to school #D100chat
I think it's important to put positive messages out into the world. Our mind helps us shape our mindset, and by seeing the positive in others and sharing it, it helps you focus on the good in the world! #d100chat
A3: It’s important to share your good message online - the more positive you post the more positive your image is - if you Aren’t putting something positive out there to build your portfolio then who is? #d100chat
My clubs are all wrapped up right now, but you can connect with other clubs during connect week, or reach out to other club leaders on the Facebook group. It is a great close group. @WillGourley is a great leader to connect with in Canada. #d100chat

A3: Student/Staff Celebrations and Shoutouts! What is something someone awesome is doing?! Share it with the world! Show that they are appreciated and noticed! #D100Chat
A4: When Ss at our school learned about a student who was a refugee at our school seeking asylum they wrote letters, made her video go viral, shared and cared. I was amazed by them. #D100chat
That's the BEST! I often share out this student: @HabSkibbix who created a prosthetic hand for his teacher AND is an entrepreneur (and he isn't even out of highschool!) #d100chat
A4: Just wrapped up a class teaching students entrepreneurship skills to create a business they are passionate about and fills a need for others. It was a great experience! #d100chat
Shoutout to all D100 for attending this chat on Spring Break - and amazing that we have @JCasaTodd leading us! We can’t wait to hear you speak at @iEngageMidwest TY! Want to see the new features in iWork for the iPad meet me over at #AppleEDUChat for more!
This kind of learning opportunity will have an impact on her forever. She will never forget it! You always find ways for our students to maximize their learning potential and dig deep within themselves! #d100chat#piperproud
Aww, thanks for the shoutout, Jennifer! If you have any questions about our Kindness Passion Projects, please let me know! Our Kindness Share Fair is in one month! #D100chat
