A1 Coaching educators is empowering and inspiring them to be their best. It is partnering with them. Learning and growing together. Coaches can see things in educators that they may not see themselves. Best job ever! #ohedchat#educoach
A1: Just like a sports coach helps someone else (or a team) to win, coaching in education does the same: it leads folks to WIN (however we describe that). #OHedchat#educoach
A1: It means that educators support each other, challenge each other to expand beyond our comfort-zones, and we willingly learn from each other. #ohedchat
A1: Coaching is life giving, focused on the human side of change, and making impact on both student and adult learning. Everyone needs someone that will encourage, nudge, and support their ongoing growth! #ohedchat
A1 Coaching others connects with identifying untapped potential in our team members, collaborating with them to establish growth goals, and working side-by-side to support our team members with achieving these goals #ohedchat
A1: coaching is to give perspective. As a player(teacher) you see a snapshot but as a coach you see the bigger picture and hope to guide your players toward success with the right feedback.
#ohedchat
A1: I coached swimming for 10 years - it was all about being the eyes on the side of the pool. Coaches see the WHOLE picture, and help break that down into approachable pieces that can be practiced and refined. #ohedchat
For example, if I want my teachers to integrate tech: they try a lesson, they reflect on it; I add other ways to try, logistics, taking to the next step after that.... Personalized feedback to keep making each teacher better #ohedchat
A1: Coaching is a selfless act. We don't get into it for ourselves - it's about servant leadership, a commitment to ensuring a colleague's success, reaching goals, learning strategies, improving outcomes. We're happy when THEY succeed. #OHedchat#educoach
Before I ask them to try something new, I make sure they know it's ok to fail. No risk no reward. If a lesson flops... And one is bound to.... Who cares? When they know this is my attitude takes the pressure off. #ohedchat
A2: Passionate, patient and a good listener. You can't just do. You have to listen to the person you are coaching and get them what they need. #OhEdChat
Both for the teacher and for the coach. Nothing gets you excited about pushing your own learning forward like working with a colleague to refine their own practice. #Ohedchat@ohlearnforward#Educoach
A2 To me most impt. is being a good listener and by that I mean TRULY listening. Not imparting my own experiences/opinions or thinking of my next question, but being fully present in that moment with that T #ohedchat
A1 to coach others in education means to empower through partnership and goal setting to positively impact instructional strategies and student achievement. #OHedchat
A2: A good coach has to have observational skills and excellent listening skills. I may know lots about something, but I have to be able to tailor support to the needs of the person I’m coaching. #ohedchat
A2: coaches must be effective observers and listeners. Must be able to create a dialogue and relationship built on trust. Perhaps, most significantly, must be a “we” approach, not “you.” #OhEdChat
It never gets old being reminded of coaching being a selfless act. There’s a posture in my spirit that has to right from the beginning before any meaningful conversation can happen. #ohedchat
A2: Great coaches are givers. And they see the bigger picture - we coach others for their future. It's not just about mastering a particular skill, it's about generalizing and reflecting to future successes. #OHedchat#educoach
A2: The ability to listen deeply, consider the perspective of others, spur meaningful reflection and actions, and form meaningful, trusting, and sustainable relationships. #OHedchat
A2: Instructional coaches need to remember what it's like to be in the classroom everyday. If you can't relate to those "in the trenches," you won't make the connections that are critical for success. #ohedchat
#ohedchat awesome stuff so far. Going to have to read up on it later. I am really interesting in instructional coaching as a potential future move. I love helping others finding their own new highest achievement. But, family is calling.
A2) A big toolbox.
When a teacher has an idea but needs the logistics or the right strategy...being able to pull something appropriate out of my toolbox is the most helpful/practical for them.
#ohedchat
A2: And non-threatening. No judging, just support. Coaches are there 100% to help teachers reach their goals...so students can reach their goals. #OHedchat#educoach
Generalizing...maybe Transfer is the right way to think about coaching - Ideally you want the teacher to be able to transfer what they are working on to other areas of their own practice. #OHedchat#Educoach@ohlearnforward
A2 At the foundational level coaches must be able to establish a positive rapport & partner this with the ability to build strong relationships with team members. This will allow the coach to the guide the team member to greater levels of success and higher impact for Ss #ohedchat
A2: Coaches must be well-versed in andragogy (the method of teaching adult learners) - and how it's different than pedagogy (teaching kids). #OHedchat#educoach
A2 One of the best complements I received that speaks to the skills needed ... Teachers told me I never lost the "Teacher" in me. They mentioned I knew when to push and when to pull back. They appreciated that I understood their busy times. #educoach#ohedchat
Thank you for highlighting the importance of being an ongoing learner too! There is so much reciprocity within coaching. We learn and grow from each other. #ohedchat
For me it's really just about being present and putting all other distractions out of my mind for that period of time. I go in with an open mind and let the conversation guide the meeting. #ohedchat
A2: on top of the great answers given, I would also say a solution seeker. Be able to identify what problems need to be solved, and find a method to measure that progress is being made #ohedchat
Good follow-up Bryan! Adult learners need ownership of the goal & process, perhaps more than anything else. If the goal is forced upon our teachers (as it often is), we oughtn't be surprised when our teachers don't go full-bore after it.

A3: In my work with @AlisaSimeral we've found one of the biggest challenges is the lack of clarity around what the heck a coach is for, anyway, and how will a coach help? #educoach#OHEdchat
A1: Robin - IL, to offer guidance, mentoring, being a good listener. Step Up when its necessary...Step Back to allow growth to happen with the student/staff you are coaching. #ohedchat
A3: Monitoring the impact of your work and communicating that to the principal, staying connected to Ss so you don't lose sight of why you are coaching, Balancing your time across the whole staff, circling back to provide ongoing feedback #ohedchat#Educoach@ohlearnforward
A3: you're not a classroom teacher and your not an administrator. Instructional leaders float in that gray area. They need to think like a teacher but be able to provide feedback with the goals of the school like an administrator.
#ohedchat
A3: Providing relevant feedback to a wide range of educators. There are no "one-size-fits-all" solutions. The challenge is to give useful, personalized feedback to every teacher #ohedchat
A3: One of the biggest challenges may be balancing—being able to move from conversation/task to the next, being fully present for each, and not losing track of supports/resources/next steps are needed for each. #ohedchat

Here is a book by Malcom Knowles https://t.co/8qOQEFgQQe The Adult Learner: The definitive classic in adult education and human resource development #ohedchat#educoach

This really reiterates the importance of relationships and having the sense of psychological safety in place to have those critical/difficult conversations without damaging the relationship itself. This goes with the receiving of feedback as well. #ohedchat
Indeed - and if we only "assign" coaches to underperforming teachers, what message are we sending about coaches? And what am I supposed to think if the coach asks me if I need anything? #Eek#educoach#OHEdchat
I have found that Learning Forward has specific tools that can help frame conversations around what a coach is for, how will the coach help, how will you need they are helping. The Tools For Learning School journal is a great resource. #OHedchat

Agreed. Unfortunately "roll outs" of coaching can cause a lot of problems especially when TRUE COACHING is not understood. #educoach#ohedchat
Build coaching programs together with Ts, not for them. Build Together and they will STAY is my motto! #educoach#ohedchat
A3: Educators are instructors who coach their students. There may be a reluctance as to the “Why” would I need an Instructional Coach?...I AM an Instructional Coach! #ohedchat
A4: Communication is key. Anyone in a leadership position should be constantly receiving feedback on what the teachers need, what the teachers are seeing, and how students are responding to interventions/programs. #ohedchat
A4: Set aside time to talk about, define, and describe the role of instructional coach together. This is perhaps the single most overlooked and underappreciated strategies to help the work find its happy place. #educoach#OHedchat
A4: Another is time management. Coaches can't be everything to everybody, so we have to prioritize our efforts. Work in cycles. Help teachers identify next-steps, then let 'em get after it...and return with strategic follow-through on a schedule. #educoach#OHedchat
A4: Probably my favorite: Coach for reflective growth. Help teachers THINK differently about their work, their goals, their impact. When we focus on how our teachers reflect, the impact will last far longer than any skill or task. #educoach#OHedchat
A4: Be dependable - show up, follow up, provide the resources and feedback in a timeley fashion, listen more- talk less, be an advocate for and defender of collaborative time focused on sharing of best pratice #ohedchat
A4: I think there can be the “BWHADITW”-Because We Have Always Done It That Way mentality! Change can be stressful & difficult for some...#growthmindset is a great strategy, accepting that education is ever evolving...its never a “one & done”. #ohedchat
A3: Overcoming a "lack of definition" of my role I guess you could say yet still trying to actively create one .... does that make sense 🤔 #OHedchat#educoach
That's worth stopping, sitting down with your teammates (admin, teachers, other coaches...) and defining it together. As my daughter's barrel-racing coach says, "Go slow to go fast." #educoach#OHedchat
A3: Overcoming a "lack of definition" of my role I guess you could say yet still trying to actively create one .... does that make sense 🤔 #OHedchat#educoach
A5: "Tell me what you noticed about..."
"Why did you chose that option?"
"What was the result of your choice?"
"How might you have influenced a different outcome?"
#educoach#OHedchat
A5: Some of the best questions have been about how (1) I was learning from my colleagues, and (2) how I was sharing my knowledge with my coworkers. In other words, how is my practice impacting other educators and students? #ohedchat
A5: My personal favorites, useful in just about any coaching situation:
"What is your goal? Why did you choose that goal? Tell me about your plan for achieving it, and how can I help you?"
#educoach#OHedchat
A5) how does that (change/strategy/technology) make the lesson more effective/engaging/rigorous. If it's not one of those things, what's the point.
#ohedchat
I agree Tricia - being fully present in the moment and all the while keeping all the other plates spinning in the background can be draining. I think having a good process for monitoring your own work is essential. I used Google Forms to keep track of my own work #OHedchat
A4- start with the people who are wanting to be coached. Don’t force yourself or devote your time to those who are not willing partners. After you build success others will come along. Some quicker than others #OHedchat
A6: it was a call forward and had nothing to do with pedagogy. "You are a leader in this school, and everything you do drives the culture and climate of the school forward" Makes you consider that even simple things like saying hi to people in the hall matters #ohedchat
A6: A peppering of reflective questions, designed to get me to think more deeply, frequently, and accurately about my efforts. @AlisaSimeral & I compiled a list of effective Q's in The Continuum of Self-Reflection, found here: https://t.co/CAsSERJJMF#educoach#OHedchat

A 5) I am a preservice teacher studying Special Education at Cedarville University. In my field experiences, my supervisiors have told me be super enthusiastic, tell objectives before a lesson, give feedback constantly, praise students more often! Im learning a lot! #ohedchat
A6: Build relationships! Tell the athletes ‘good job’ the day after a win. Tell the drama kids to break a leg. Ask the quiet kid how their weekend went. I make sure my students know that while I’ll push them & challenge them, I’m behind them 100%. #ohedchat
Great topic and discussion tonight. Sorry I was late to the party. My role tonight was Uber Dad. I will be reading the chat and commenting as I am seeing lots of great stuff. #ohedchat
#OHedchat A6: started having 15 minute #FASTER mtgs with @GLSSuperFalcon. 5 minto share my work, 5 min to have questions posed to me, and 5 minutes where we collaborate on the most important and develop action steps to move #Faster#Legion
A6: Can't say I recall any solid feedback in one go. But, I've amalgamated this: You're going to make some mistakes when you head into this. But make them well, learn from them, and then don't make them again. (and when possible laugh. Preferably with a friend) #ohedchat
