Good morning #satchat -- Quinn Rollins, Salt Lake City. District curriculum specialist. Author sometimes. I don't know enough about digital portfolios, excited to learn today!
A1 For today's learner digital portfolios are essential learning tools that: capture students' learning, can be accessed anywhere, are easily edited & enable ongoing feedback + reflection & span the years. My Digital Portfolios page https://t.co/4E2DXaJhhB#satchat#edchat
According to International Journal of ePortfolio, students who maintain a digital portfolio throughout their K12 education graduate at a higher rate and with a higher GPA than their non-portfolio holding counterparts! Has anyone seen this? #satchat
Digital portfolios themselves are not the answer. It is the changing pedagogy that first must take place to make the portfolio meaningful that should be requisite for 21st century learners. #satchat
A1: Digital portfolios are great tools for access and quality planning & goal setting. Just have to be careful they don’t replace all work forms. Notebooks still have a place in the classroom, especially for ELA! #satchat
Yep! Portfolios are something asked for in every career. Think back to my binder from Student Teaching. 😬 As we move away from paper, it makes sense #satchat
Just a reminder about SPAM on our #satchat this morning:

A1 I think as many schools and employers take a "show me" view of hiring, a digital portfolio is going to be an essential piece for kids to start developing. It's all about the body of work #satchat
A1: The digital portfolio is esstential for the 21st century learner. They live in an ever increasing digital world and we must prepare them for their future. #satchat
A1. As a teacher going through a departmental self-study & eval where we're all creating our own digital portfolios to meet criteria, I like the idea of Ss having the same opportunity! #satchat
A1) I'm hesitant to insist any one thing is a necessity for everyone, but I think digital portfolios are something we should be working towards. It can be a far more relevant, valuable and lasting way to document learning than any other. #satchat
A1 Portfolios #empowerstudents by creating a record of their meaningful learning—with all associated struggles, opportunities, discoveries, risks, and rewards #satchat
A1: I'm going to say that a portfolio is necessary, they are changing to digital, and I probably need to get on board with this for my students. #satchat
A1: I think providing exposure is essential to prepare our learners for the ever-growing digital age. If used effectively, it could be a great place for self monitoring, reflection, and collaboration. #satchat
A1: Digital literacy seems to be required for the 21st century communicator. A digital portfolio is a way to assess and provide feedback. Also sets conditions for collaboration, e.g. - #satchat ! @teachKHT
Have to be careful about everything being digital. Lots of research on the brain remembering what the hands are doing. Notebooks are still quality tools for writing and reading. #satchat
studies say many 21st century ss will be self-employed so they will need to have the skills to develop a portfolio of work and talents, and be able to self-evaluate their skills and products #satchat
A1
Digital portfolios are a great tool for helping students demonstrate their knowledge, experience and ability to implement what they learned. As for a necessity? It depends on the class and purpose of the portfolio.
#satchat
A1 a digital portfolio lets a student take pride in their best work and see their own progress across the years. Beyond being infinitely shareable, I like that it helps the students celebrate their own accomplisments. #satchat
A1 Portfolios #empowerstudents by creating a record of their meaningful learning—with all associated struggles, opportunities, discoveries, risks, and rewards #satchat
A1: Digital portfolios is where we should be going. I'd love to see all University's use these in the admission process that'd force K-12 to switch #satchat
A1: Digital portfolios provides learners of all ages with an opportunity to show what they know about the topic at hand. They also provide an opportunity to tell your story #satchat
A1 Digital portfolios can be one way for 21st cent Ss to communicate, one thing should not be necessity, giving Ss diff avenues & platforms is important #satchat
A1 A digital portfolio tool like Seesaw empowers students to independently document their learning and provides an audience for their work—their peers, parents, or the world. #satchat
A1)Ss portfolios have been an essential part of my classroom practice for 20+ years. Tech has allowed my Ss opportunity to amplify what was once just papers in folders through digitalization. #satchat
A1: I keep thinking, what is the end game for a S regarding digital portfolios? What is predicted it may look like for a 5 year old 13 years from now. #satchat
So we need to get to a place in which the teaching and learning match what would be documented in digital portfolios? Can the change happen simultaneously? #satchat
Q1 - I believe a digital portfolio is more a benefit or bonus than a necessity. A good thing to have but not necessary to be successful #SatChat#Tec207@mgcjusa
Really excited that the #satchat crowd is looking at this topic judiciously -- I think portfolios when done well are incredible - but they are not the holy grail of education
Hi! Abbey - principal in NYC. A1: Students need to know how to move fluidly between digital and paper and choose the best form for the job and/or to archive work. Doesn’t always have to start and stay digital, but Ss should have options! #satchat
I remember those binder portfolios and panicking when I handed them to someone; "that's my only copy!" ...digitally, we can share with anyone. #satchat
A1 a digital portfolio lets a student take pride in their best work and see their own progress across the years. Beyond being infinitely shareable, I like that it helps the students celebrate their own accomplisments. #satchat
Question 2: what items would you expect to see represented in a student's digital portfolio? Think multimedia assets, personal vs. academic, interdisciplinary vs. focused, etc. #satchat
A1 Using a digital portfolio tool to engage parents with the amazing things happening in our schools around learning is a powerful way to tell our stories. #satchat
A1: A digital portfolio would curate and display a learner and his/her various skills to a massive audience, with the learner in control of what is being curated. Valuable for kids to learn how to market themselves and their abilities #satchat
A1: Having students create a digital footprint now is a great way to have Ss think about the message they want to send to the world. A digital portfolio would be part of this. #satchat
A1: Um, no. "Necessary" in education leads to all kinds of "standards" and paperwork. We're talking about kids. Fingerpainting is a digital skill.
#satchat
A1: #edtech is never a necessity. It's just a tool. If it serves your #pedagogy then it's excellent. If not, better not use it. I use the SAMR model to determine which app to use and how to use it. Tagged some favorites in the pic. #FlipgridFever#MIEExpert#MinecraftEdu#satchat
A1 yes, b/c serves as a way to represent themselves as a learner & of course it should be digital-that aspect can contribute to creativity of it #satchat
I think this is a key point. I've said for years that they may use #edtech daily but they don't know how to use it for learning. It's our job to teach them and this includes their daily social media presence.
#satchat
Good point!! I think blogging in a great digital portfolio-focus along the educational journey-taking risks, reflecting, making changes. Work in progress!! #satchat
A1 As we wave goodbye to book culture, it becomes totally necessary for students to understand and curate experience in various multimedia formats. Doing this well is an art you can't necessarily learn on Snapchat. #satchat Portfolio or Bust.
A2: A portfolio should tell the story of you. While it should include academic content, I'd like to see leadership, service learning, personal goals, sports, clubs, etc. #satchat
A1: Maybe not all digital at all times, but the skill of creating, editing, sharing to the world, and recreating is a cycle that the tech specifically supports! #satchat
#satchat A1: Also, I am thinking of the advantages of having a portfolio for college applications. My son had to have one for Ball State when he was applying to the College of Architecture and Planning. It was quite competitive.
A2 There are so many things that can go into a portfolio, but they all should revolve around how Ss have grown in their thinking Find variety of items that show their thinking #satchat
A1 Using a digital portfolio tool to engage parents with the amazing things happening in our schools around learning is a powerful way to tell our stories. #satchat
A2: Growth pieces, reflection and showcase best work. School work and outside school passions. This combination really tells the whole story of a student. #satchat
Crafting an interdisciplinary portfolio allows students to make more unlikely connections. THIS is creativity at work! Science meets art meets math meets personal passion -- all in one place. #satchathttps://t.co/r6QDA5iupg
Just a caveat that I wouldn't suggest kids can't learn on their own, thru tech or otherwise. But agree that portfolios in particular should ideally be in the larger context of pedagogy and assessment. #satchat
A2: I say let’s make the portfolio interdisciplinary! Perhaps a collection of process moments across subject areas, or tracked progress across an extended form of project based learning. #satchat
I'd want to see a variety of tools used to represent not only their own strengths through certificates, badges, credentials, but I want Ss 2 go beyond flashy & show they know information that is practical for handling the real world. #satchat
Question 2: what items would you expect to see represented in a student's digital portfolio? Think multimedia assets, personal vs. academic, interdisciplinary vs. focused, etc. #satchat
Love the first page!! Displays ed philosophy, me as a person, family basically my why in life! Then each page after focuses on NC teaching standards. Link to my blog is there too! #satchat
A2 Students identify factors in what makes work meaningful to them & create a portfolio of work representing times they succeeded and failed to make their work meaningful. #satchat#empowerstudents
A2: Digital portfolios should have mechanisms in place so that constructive feedback can be given from a global audience. Additionally relevant media to help support comprehension of topic at hand #satchat
The point of portfolios is creating a representation of continuous learning and progress - as such, the assignments should be designed as such #satchat
Question 2: what items would you expect to see represented in a student's digital portfolio? Think multimedia assets, personal vs. academic, interdisciplinary vs. focused, etc. #satchat
A1 : digital portfolios can be a great way for students to show their work over the course of a year ( or marking period ) I don’t think were there yet in terms of it being a necessity,— yet #satchat
A2: Samples of writing, their thinking, their growth across disciplines, and their passions which help tell colleges and employers what skill sets and drive the students have. #satchat
A2 So many things can go into a portfolio but I think self reflection, goal setting, questions the student derived are just as important as the final product. Reflection empowers growth #satchat
A2 Students identify factors in what makes work meaningful to them & create a portfolio of work representing times they succeeded and failed to make their work meaningful. #satchat#empowerstudents
A2: should include snapshot of Ss flexed #21stcenturyskills - multiple media, subjects showcased in various appropriate methods like video, gifs, blogs etc. #satchat
A2: Interdisciplinary is the key. Want to help our students create s clean digital academic and personal footprint they are proud of (sorry for the dangling preposition) #satchat
Question 2: what items would you expect to see represented in a student's digital portfolio? Think multimedia assets, personal vs. academic, interdisciplinary vs. focused, etc. #satchat
A2 Learning is a journey of experiences. From the student perspective I’d expect to see that journey documented. Tell me about the journey, not just the destination. #satchat
A2. Most importantly, reflection. Process pieces - brainstorms, drafts, feedback, reiterations. Work that shows their growing understanding of themes & essential questions. Application, connections, questions... #satchat
Question 2: what items would you expect to see represented in a student's digital portfolio? Think multimedia assets, personal vs. academic, interdisciplinary vs. focused, etc. #satchat
A2: Samples of writing, their thinking, their growth across disciplines, and their passions which help tell colleges and employers what skill sets and drive the students have. #satchat
A2: Students should collaborate to create with different apps/platforms to add to their digital portfolio. They need to technology choice to prepare them for their future in a digital world. #satchat
A2) I would like to see students curating a collection of how they are developing useful and transferable skills (public speaking, website design, interviews, expressing opinions) in addition to content-related skills #satchat
A1. A digital portfolio is beneficial, but certainly not a necessity. An ongoing blog/vlog of learning and reflection would be equally valuable. It's nice to show work, but the reflection and understanding of how the work changed you is more powerful/telling. #satchat
#satchat A2: For my son's portfolio for Ball State, he had to include his drawings, poems, paintings, anything creative he had done to showcase his creativity.
A2 using a portfolio to support reflection, showing what they know, Looking for ideas/templates others have used for both verbal and written reflection #satchat
Question 3: Do you see digital portfolios as a place to showcase finished work & projects only, or as the place to document the entire process from concept to finished product? #satchat
Question 2: what items would you expect to see represented in a student's digital portfolio? Think multimedia assets, personal vs. academic, interdisciplinary vs. focused, etc. #satchat
A2 So many things can go into a portfolio but I think self reflection, goal setting, questions the student derived are just as important as the final product. Reflection empowers growth #satchat
A2
A student's digital portfolio should include what they know, what they can do and what their potential is for what they know. Very similar to Bloom's Taxonomy
Demonstrate what they:
Remember
Understand
Apply
Anaylze
Evaluate
Create
#satchat
A2: Samples of writing, their thinking, their growth across disciplines, and their passions which help tell colleges and employers what skill sets and drive the students have. #satchat
I agree that students need to identify what makes work meaningful to them. This work is all about student growth and needs to be led by student thinking/reflection #satchat
A2 Learning is a journey of experiences. From the student perspective I’d expect to see that journey documented. Tell me about the journey, not just the destination. #satchat
How many of us then go back to a Storify (or choose your tool) and put the threads into reflective context? Using comments and annotation instead of just documentation? This seems an important step we (me) often forget or ignore #satchat
Question 3: Do you see digital portfolios as a place to showcase finished work & projects only, or as the place to document the entire process from concept to finished product? #satchat
Question 3: Do you see digital portfolios as a place to showcase finished work & projects only, or as the place to document the entire process from concept to finished product? #satchat
Design portfolios from professional POV. WHY's there paper when my stuff's on websites, LinkedIn, AngelList, Medium, Amazon...think "real" for kids. #satchat
Aristotle says the rhetorical triangle has three sides. Pathos is just one of 'em. When everyone's focused on feeling, ethics and logic become precious commodities. #satchat
A2:. DP’s should be interdisciplinary and be outlets for students to show what they know in the formats that suit them best, not just collections of “last drafts.” Additionally, they should be houses for student research and resources they collect for their success. #satchat
Yes! Schools say they value family engagement but don't always use the tools right in front of them. These portfolios have multiple audiences. #satchat
A1 Using a digital portfolio tool to engage parents with the amazing things happening in our schools around learning is a powerful way to tell our stories. #satchat
A2)I ask my Ss to place one item in their Wow Work folder each week. It could be math, writing, a recorded reading showing fluency, etc. But they have to tell why they're putting it in and how it supports their goal(s). I use @Seesaw. #satchat
Digital portfolios allow Ss to showcase what they do in today’s classrooms (website creations, coding, iMovies, green screen, etc) having one to me is the equivalent of sending a w.s. home for parents to see. It’s a necessary part of the learning process. #satchat
A3. The great part to a portfolio approach is it recognizes process as being part of learning. When we are able to study what came before and reflect on what we have done (or not), we strengthen the learnign process. #satchat
Process + Product = Powerful! Here is a stellar example of one student documenting her entire creative process -- from concept to completion -- that imbues the final piece with more meaning & merit: https://t.co/uGXB8cHduv#satchat
#satchat depends if the portfolio is for professional purpose or for end-of-year project - latter I think makes more sense but if it is replacing a resume, not so much. IMO
A3. I want to see it as a place for reflective growth. In reality, it has become a place to show the ending of things. I have not found the right way to do this yet with my students, I admit. #satchat
A3: Process is more important than product. If mini-lessons are powerful, Ss should be encouraged to show where and HOW these changes impacted their work, not just that the changes were completed. Standards tell us what to teach, but not how. #satchat
A2: Samples of writing, their thinking, their growth across disciplines, and their passions which help tell colleges and employers what skill sets and drive the students have. #satchat
Or a website. I had my Eng 2 Ss create websites this year. They have a blog post page (reflection), passion page (teach me about what they love), and growing. #satchat
A3. It also nicely allows us to weave both formative and summative elements into our assessment work. It forces us to remember that summative without formative isn't tremendously valuable. #satchat
A3 My granddaughter's school uses @Seesaw successfully and my daughter/SIL enjoy seeing their daughter's kindergarten work in progress and once completed. Great record keeping of her work and progress.
My Seesaw page https://t.co/LnxDrYAAMU#satchat
A2: Id like to see a wide variety of items included In the portfolio- examples of academic items and creative items —-things that show a well rounded student who can create and think #satchat
A3 I see both! Really should encompass the learning journey along the way to get to the final product of what was learned. Using a variety of digital platforms. #satchat
A3: I think there is space for both in a digital portfolio. Let people both see the road to get there and the finished product. It feels more meaningful. #satchat
Question 3: Do you see digital portfolios as a place to showcase finished work & projects only, or as the place to document the entire process from concept to finished product? #satchat
Yes! So the real question for me becomes not what is “in” a digital portfolio but how do students understand what a digital portfolio is/can be, the purpose of it (is the audience bigger than the class/teacher) so THEY choose what goes into it broadly. #satchat
A3: The portfolio needs to show growth in students and not just mastery. Being able to showcase the "Point A to Point B" process would be very valuable to stakeholders #satchat
Or a website. I had my Eng 2 Ss create websites this year. They have a blog post page (reflection), passion page (teach me about what they love), and growing. #satchat
A1 Simply digitizing past practice serves little instructional purpose and ultimately leads to low levels of learning. These types of practices have lead to a number of studies that have indicated that purchasing more technology does not increase student learning. #satchat
I agree! It's so important for us to allow students to see how all content is interrelated. Portfolios can help make this more obvious for students #satchat
A3: Portfolios should show the process and not just the produce. If it is showing growth then it must show where you began along with your accomplishment. Goals, reflection, questions...should all be there. #satchat
Question 3: Do you see digital portfolios as a place to showcase finished work & projects only, or as the place to document the entire process from concept to finished product? #satchat
A2) More than the content, I'd think it should demonstrate how a student learns. And as the student would lead her learning, she should be able to determine what's in it. #satchat
Question 2: what items would you expect to see represented in a student's digital portfolio? Think multimedia assets, personal vs. academic, interdisciplinary vs. focused, etc. #satchat
A3: I think that digital portfolios should display both finished projects but also what the process of how the finished project came to be. Then you can talk about what struggles you faced along the way #TEC207#SatChat@mgcjusa
A3: As an educator, we love to see where Ss began, and where they end up! I believe it should be a work in progress because we are ALWAYS growing and improving as learners! #satchat
Question 3: Do you see digital portfolios as a place to showcase finished work & projects only, or as the place to document the entire process from concept to finished product? #satchat
A3: I think documenting the process of learning a digital portfolio can be helpful for the feedback it would provide. My students post their writing and collaborate with their peers to help them edit and revise. #satchat
A3: Students should choose how they want to present themselves. As educators, we promote the value of the process and encourage students have both types of work. #satchat
Question 3: Do you see digital portfolios as a place to showcase finished work & projects only, or as the place to document the entire process from concept to finished product? #satchat
A3: Digital portfolios should document the learning process - there's no need to make the process look perfect by only showing final drafts - celebrate the messy parts of learning, too! #satchat
Agreed. 100%. I get privacy, but a kid w 100K views on YouTube--that's a portfolio. And real. I've got kids on Deviantart, Wattpad, Medium, IG... #satchat
Such an important part of the writing / learning process! Are we practicing what we preach to students? Including metacogntive aspects in our own self-guided learning? #satchat
A3 I don't think there should be only 1 portfolio. Depends on the situation. Some call for finished work, but others might want to show progression #satchat
A3 Finished work, but w/ descriptions of process. How did you create this? What did you learn aling the way? If you had another month to work on this, what would you change? #satchat
A3:@KellyGToGo said it best in stating that no writing is finished but rather a last draft is submitted. I’d like to see the process as well as the product in DP’s. There is always editing to do and things we can add to improve. #satchat
Right. That is definitely one piece that allows dig. portfolios to move beyond substitution. Can the spoken part happen as interviews between Ts and Ss face-to-face? #satchat
A3
The purpose of the portfolio will determine if it shows a work in progress or final product.
Both are important but it depends on the purpose. One should not be limited to a particular way of using a digital portfolio. #satchat
A2. The assignments/work are the least important parts of a digital portfolio, IMO. The student's reflection on the work, how it connected to their life/interests, why they chose it and how it helped them grow is as important as how it aligned to a set of standards. #satchat
Many teacher education programs in NJ encourage digital portfolios so future teachers can highlight what makes them the best candidate for the teaching position. I’ve often interviewed candidates based on their digital imprint and passion. #satchat
That's what I was thinking, plus they get some basic skills in websites (navigation menu, content, etc.) The passion page is curation that must include text, pics, and vids. Will likely have their research papers start there too then get copied to a doc. #satchat
#satchat I like the idea of including S work that shows the process and their reflection of the learning skill acquired ( ie. Perseverance, tenacity, lessons learned from failure)
A3) it could be nice for students to reflect on (and possibly document) each of the steps and the process of one major project - what was good, challenging, what worked, what they would change... #satchat
3A) One way to look at this is through Process--If we parallel this to Teacher PLC work, pre-assessment then work in progress then final outcome--shows growth even if the end product is not mastered--what GROWTH occurred? #satchat
Start by showing them some good examples from others that had good reflections. May need to go outside the classroom to find these. I'm sure plenty of people here have some to share. #satchat
Oh absolutely. If that happens, though, it would make sense for the T to record the conversation. That is, portfolios, IMO, should endure beyond one moment. #satchat
A3: The one time a digital portfolio MUST be a finished product is when students are using it for a job interview / job placement. This is where their best work must be on display. #satchat
A3 Students yearn for an educational experience that caters to their interests, innate desires for expressive creativity, and a need for play. Digital portfolios support that change in student experience. #satchat
I think it depends on what portfolio platform you use. In my classes, we do a lot of “sandboxing” online, as the process is just as (or sometimes more) important than the finished product. #satchat
Question 3: Do you see digital portfolios as a place to showcase finished work & projects only, or as the place to document the entire process from concept to finished product? #satchat
A3.2 Or how about a failure portfolio? What DIDN’T work here? What would you do differently next time? Why was the attempt worthwhile? What did you learn about the topic? The process? Yourself? #satchat
Q3 as with any type of learning I️ like to see the progression as both a teacher and parent so digital portfolios should house the entire learning process not just A’s but what Ss are proud of & can improve on. The reflection part is the piece that needs to be included #satchat
We're using the new G Sites, the rubric is more of a working doc that lists everything they should have on it, am still working through the processes with Ss, and we have fun writings on Fridays that get their own page too. #satchat
A2:. DP’s should be interdisciplinary and be outlets for students to show what they know in the formats that suit them best, not just collections of “last drafts.” Additionally, they should be houses for student research and resources they collect for their success. #satchat
A3 Finished work, but w/ descriptions of process. How did you create this? What did you learn aling the way? If you had another month to work on this, what would you change? #satchat
A3: it can be either. Hopefully, however, emphasis is placed on process more than product. Digital portfolios also increase the opportunity for collaborative learning thru peer feedback #satchat
You're so correct. We cannot expect students to adapt to a learning culture based on growth and innovation unless the adults change. Focus on showing change and progress - build confidence. #satchat
#satchat A2. S projects at various stages should be included along with the finished product. Student voice about the process and what they learned about themselves.
We have organizations, non-profits, educational thinkers, and companies guest moderate. The rest of the time we do it. The purpose is to engage educators, talk, share, and have a positive conversation about various topics. Sorry if you feel otherwise.
#satchat
Great point. Can conversations about portfolios happen without being recorded? Can students engage in conversation about each other's growth without having to record it? Or does that defeat the purpose of a portfolio? #satchat
A3: The one time a digital portfolio MUST be a finished product is when students are using it for a job interview / job placement. This is where their best work must be on display. #satchat
#satchat A2. S projects at various stages should be included along with the finished product. Student voice about the process and what they learned about themselves.
We know students dig deeper and perform better if they know they have an audience beyond their classroom teacher. It's called the "audience effect." But how can we harness this while protecting work from an unwanted audience? #satchathttps://t.co/QVjE9UrAj1
A3 The creation of the portfolio as the project-what would Ss define as aspects of a strong portfolio after sorting through several ex? Why? What is the purpose? What would be the learning target for creating a portfolio, not just the doing target? #satchat
My hunch is that it defeat the purpose of the portfolio. That is, if it's meant to be a record of their success (or growth), that record should include discourse. (But not necessarily all of them.) #satchat
That's true of the humanities too -- many of those same processes (multiple iterations, continued tweaking) are present in ELA, social studies, arts #satchat
A2: I think there needs to be a range of programs used to show that Ss are digitally versatile. They also need to show their reflections on the work. How did this turn out? What could I change to improve it? #satchat
A4: Great advice from @nellkduke about starting off small. Make it your goal to have just one quality project to public and go from there. Schools must inform parents about the benefits of authentic learning. #satchat
A4 In today's digital world, is anything really private anymore? Pretty much anything/anywhere can end up online in a second. Privacy is almost nonexistent. #satchat
A3: I see digital portfolios as BOTH a place to showcase finished work AND as a place to document the learning process. A class blog/website is perfect for this!
#satchat
A4: Be aware of policies & regs (both inside & beyond your district) get parents & students on board, and if need be, redact names and/or pictures #satchat
In comes the importance of teaching digital footprints/digital citizenship early. Also be selective in your audience & what you include in the portfolio. Honestly, a great ? to ponder! #satchat
A4: There are many apps that allow Ss to share only with Ts & Ps rather than with the general public.
At my school, Ts have used @Seesaw effectively. #satchat
A3. I see a digital portfolio as a place for students to show work that they feel was important/influential to them. To reflect & discuss their growth as a learner. Also to demonstrate choice & how the learning opportunities we provide supported their future choices. #satchat
If they become focused on the tech and the recording rather than talking about the learning, by all means let them just talk. Don't see why portfolios would need to capture every single thing. #satchat
We also have to honor privacy concerns. The same judgment we place on sharing tweets from school and the classroom should be applied to sharing portfolios and work samples publicly. Know your school’s policy! #satchat
Niki from PA 4th gr writing & science. Late to chat also. We use new google sites. Easy to use, and the kids love creating their own sites with all the features available. #satchat
A3: Definitely the entire process. I want to see their thinking and learning through the process. If I am an employer, I want to see how you think through and solve a problem, not just the end result. #satchat
A4: data and student privacy is important to keep in mind. But the "public" feel of a dig portfolio also helps or pushes Ss to realize their work will have an actual audience and take it more serious + real world connections #satchat
We also have to honor privacy concerns. The same judgment we place on sharing tweets from school and the classroom should be applied to sharing portfolios and work samples publicly. Know your school’s policy! #satchat
Why do (anything, really) if its only purpose is to stay within the walls of your classroom? I try to make everything connect to the outside world. #satchat
There needs to be a variety because while we are digital we also need that time away from the tech with focus on people. When recording the environment is different. #satchat
Yes. I guess my wondering is I want to be true to the process nature of portfolios, right? So, if we want that conversation to be tied to student growth, then it would seem to be valuable. . . .#satchat
I opted out. I opted out last week as well when the #satchat discussion was about "servant leadership." I have no problem with service leadership, but no one should be subservient to anyone else. #history
Just like kids playing in a real sandbox making beautiful castles and structures, but knowing that they can always change or even reset their work. A safe space filled with constructive feedback and guidance. #satchat
I agree that the process can be just as, if not more important at times. Students need to have a space to reflect on the process to solidify their learning #satchat
Let’s not underestimate the metacognition opportunity presented by portfolios. Students are evaluating their work to see which products make the cut. I’d love to make a rubric that students use to grade their work to decide whether it makes the “cut” #satchat
This makes me think that part of this, then, is connecting students with the tech side of creating a website and managing that for themselves. @dogtrax idea of crafting a “digital identity”. Navigating Wordpress unit maybe? #satchat
A4: I use @Seesaw. It has a feature allowing the teacher and student to share their portfolio with only the teachers, students, and family members that we want involved to give feedback. It is like Facebook for digital protfolios. #satchat
A4: safety is always a priority; but empowerment comes with sharing ideas with the world, interacting with others outside the four walls. Teaching Ss digital safety is a must #satchat
A4: This is something I'm not entirely sure how to do. It seems hard to find a way to make sure that we don't inadvertently spread work farther than the student would want. This seems like a potential downside of digital. #satchat
A4) If the focus is on learning, they shouldn't be thinking about an audience for everything. Once students have gone through a process they're proud of, they themselves can decide what to share. But teach them the value of managing and editing, not sharing everything. #satchat
A4) If the focus is on learning, they shouldn't be thinking about an audience for everything. Once students have gone through a process they're proud of, they themselves can decide what to share. But teach them the value of managing and editing, not sharing everything. #satchat
It's proven that an experience is "stickier" only after reflecting on it. Reflection is important for the student, but for the teacher to reflect on student work allows them to better teach to the individual. Know where a student came from in order to know where to go #satchat
This is tough for me. I was always concerned looking at a Ss files before school started. You don't want a preconceived idea what how that Ss works as we all evolve & change. That being said, portfolios take a deeper dive into thought the process #satchat
I think there needs to be more parent education around this. Schools should be sharing student work with a global audience but parents need to understand and be involved in that process. Educating parents=winning #satchat
Just like kids playing in a real sandbox making beautiful castles and structures, but knowing that they can always change or even reset their work. A safe space filled with constructive feedback and guidance. #satchat
A5: I think it is very important! Learning is a lifelong process and we need to consider the progress that students have made until that point! #satchat
A5: The reality is... it depends! If the portfolio sent along is of a high quality and tells a real story, collaboration to reflect on the contents is important. If not, it’s heading for the shredder! #satchat
A5: This is a “duh” question for me as a teacher - 💯 part of the work. I think that the most important question is how are Ts working with students to help them understand this about themselves so that they own their own process. #schemaformasterlearners#janepollock#satchat
A5: Very high. Ts need to look at the Ss process of learning to see how they have grown. Mastery is nice, but not all Ss will reach it; however all Ss can grow. #satchat
#satchat A5: Obviously extremely important. This is why we suddenly have all these rules and laws about collecting, analyzing, and improving student data.
Id like to know what strategies teachers have out there to get kids to buy into this. Portfolios arent where these kids share and learn. Who are these eports for? #satchat
A4: It needs to be a partnership with parents. I use G Sites
for my student websites because it can stay on campus only or go public. Each parent and student decide that and discuss what personal info to include. #satchat
I've heard this question before. It begs the question do we require and not allow some work to be deleted or truly leave the portfolio in the hands of student choice knowing this could happen? #satchat
Just like kids playing in a real sandbox making beautiful castles and structures, but knowing that they can always change or even reset their work. A safe space filled with constructive feedback and guidance. #satchat
A4. Ss should have the option of what they want to publish, just as they do in all walks of their digital/social media lives. But, we also know that the work Ss do for an audience is usually "good" work vs work only done for a teacher which can be often be "good enough." #satchat
A5. Critical would be an understatement. I think of the dialogue this invites with S’s and P’s and how much easier it would be digitally to interact with past work where creation to reflect progress is a logical follow up step #satchat
A4: Keeping the time old “what you post is public and never goes away” in mind, schools could create a drive folder (similar to my district’s Backpack) to share positive student work examples and anonymous data to keep communities informed. #satchat
A5:It is important to reflect on the Ss past work (not dwell on it) in order to best understand strengths/weaknesses & see growth. Provides a blueprint. #satchat
for me an authentic audience creates an opportunity for others to give feedback. Our theatre and orchestra kids love when I record their performances and upload to YouTube #satchat
Good point, it is still the student's choice on what goes in. So if they don't want it shared, then that is okay. But a peer may intentionally leak it for whatever reason (not condoning this), so it may not remain private. #satchat
A4: Writing/posting about the learning experience online without using specific information is a good way to balance sharing students work while also keeping their privacy! #Tec207#SatChat@mgcjusa
A5 Teacher reflection is crucial. We must develop deeply personal relationships with our students so that we can help guide them in their development and growth #satchat
I think the power of a portfolios is when the work is "owned" by the student and they take it with them wherever they go and it doesn't stay with the school. #satchat
A4: Keeping the time old “what you post is public and never goes away” in mind, schools could create a drive folder (similar to my district’s Backpack) to share positive student work examples and anonymous data to keep communities informed. #satchat
A basic portfolio created because of “compliance” will stay in a dusty box all year or head to the paper shredder. A quality portfolio that captures choice, voice, and process learning will spark discussions and new goals. #satchat
I think there needs to be more parent education around this. Schools should be sharing student work with a global audience but parents need to understand and be involved in that process. Educating parents=winning #satchat
Beyond choice, many of those online maker tools (that can be included in portfolio) simply don’t have any “standard” or paper equivalents. PowTunes, Explain Everything, even creating a song in Garage Band and with one click, playing it. #satchat
It would be interesting to see a #student portfolio with school & extracurricular achievements. Imagine how proud they’d feel, showcasing their best essay and a picture of them on stage or on a sports field. Great concept! #satchat
A5 if a student's work does not meet expectations, as a teacher, I have to reflect where I went wrong ... did every kid struggle? Can't blame only the kids #satchat
#MyMomAlwaysToldMe
Kindness is to do & say
The kindest things
In the kindest way
If you can't say anything nice
Don't say anything at all
Not that I EVER listened !!!
#SaturdayMorning#satchat
A5. I beleive it is crucial as long as the reflection process is intentional with its goal setting and follow thru. Don't just collect reflections to showcase. Use it. #satchat
I've heard this question before. It begs the question do we require and not allow some work to be deleted or truly leave the portfolio in the hands of student choice knowing this could happen? #satchat

"Rants About Removing Trump"
Moore accuser exposed as card-carrying far-left radical. Yep, it was a hit job orchestrated by Bezos and his propaganda rag, the WaPo, as we thought.
A5 It's important for teachers to reflect on students' past work to learn about their learning styles and their interests and how to help them continue to grow. #satchat
Well well well, so George Takei, another self righteous, condescending, Trump hating Hollywood scumbag who rants about removing Trump from office is accused of sexual assault... these arrogant Hollywood pigs are the same ones calling Trump a sexual predator, let that sink in.
A basic portfolio created because of “compliance” will stay in a dusty box all year or head to the paper shredder. A quality portfolio that captures choice, voice, and process learning will spark discussions and new goals. #satchat
Q5. What is the point of a digital portfolio if you aren't showing a student's growth and their thoughts and reflections on their work and growth as a learner over time? Otherwise it's just a gallery walk of current work. #satchat
A5: I think looking back to move forward is important; we should know the skills they possess when they enter our classes. However, I prefer using my own pre-assessments as a starting point & use a previous class’s work as another point of data to understand my students. #satchat
In Google Drive, there’s revision history and sharing settings to control who sees what and who has changed what. #satchat. Many other services we use offer similar ways to safely track progress. #satchat
A5 to be an active participant in growing that student forward, Ts need to guide Ss through the reflection and understanding of where they have been and take them to their potential #satchat
Very true! I had never thought about this aspect of portfolios. Learning might not be as meaningful if the students are not familiar with where they are forced to share. #satchat
One of my favorite things about google docs is the revision history. When I taught pen and paper I would always tell my students not to erase. There's so much value in seeing where they started #satchat
#satchat A6: I teach high school so I'll answer that question. Not only is a DP a valuable tool to assess academic growth in measurable terms, it is also something that can be used for college applications.
A5: #satchat this>>>> we fail students if they can't recognize, articulate, and celebrate their own progress to a third party! Such an important #lifeskill
A5: This is a “duh” question for me as a teacher - 💯 part of the work. I think that the most important question is how are Ts working with students to help them understand this about themselves so that they own their own process. #schemaformasterlearners#janepollock#satchat
#satchat Q6: DPs give students a way to share work with family in all geographical locations which brings up points of discussion and reflection naturally
#satchat
Trump- "Putin they're getting closer!
Putin- " You pardon them remember, we went over this?"
Trump- " Yes but what about me, who'll pardon me?"
Putin- "Here sit down & relax. Have a cup of tea"
A5: It is critical for teachers to reflect on a student’s past work to understand his/her progress and process. This will help the teacher to further the student’s educational gains. #satchat
Elementary for practicing navigating tech tools and the concept of "digital"; middle for establishing digital citizenship & long term educational vision; high school for K12 culmination and college entrance/career readiness. #satchathttps://t.co/1cpHYdMFsH
A6. Digital portfolios allow students to share their journey of growth as a person and a learner with a global audience. This benefits them with college admissions/careers etc. Resumes are a dying format. They also help kids start build a positive adult digital identity. #satchat
A6 elem and middle: ease of access and sharing, no lost papers, high school the same but also can easily take with them and share at the collegiate level with Click of a button. It’s not attached to the school. #satchat
A5: Didn't see the Q, but assuming from answers. The student DP also shows how far my thinking has evolved and changed, which makes me better and shows my growth as well. #satchat
A6: As a high school T, a portfolio can give my Ss the ability to see their progress, reflect on learning, & prepare college applications which require portfolios. #satchat
As a college student, I wish I had created a portfolio that I could use to show my learning over time. Especially since the meaning of education changes so much as I go through my educational journey. #satchat
A6: Elementary kids will see tremendous growth, middle school Ss will experience motivation and engagement related to their interests, wonders, & passions, and high school Ss will see the beginning of a future taking shape #satchat
Ok... how about focusing on the reflection aspect? Not "I need to document this learning now," but documenting the reflection ok that learning later on? #satchat
#MyMomAlwaysToldMe from the time I was 5 to be honest, get a job & pay taxes cause if you don't file taxes you go to jail. If you go to jail you'll get beat up. If you get beat up, you'll prob die 😒
Mom's an accountant.
😂😂😂
#saturdaymorning#satchat
There's certainly many we can name for each level but overall, the confidence these can instill. 'You don't know where you are going until you know where you've been.' #satchat
A6. It is about building habits and honing the skill of self-awareness. When you start young curating a DP you strengthen these skills so as a college student or adult you really understand how to present your story. #satchat
Thing is: they already do this It's a very small tweak to show case studies--where I've failed to collab w ppl based on neg SM. Then show uses cases for positive. #satchat
And Beyond The Walls of the classroom does not have to mean going public. It could mean experiencing and expanding the self in multiple spaces. #satchat
An important aspect of digital portfolios is that they offer students AND teachers an effective way to organize and SAVE work for future reference/enjoyment. I often read and share my 5th grade writing folder (created in 1977) with Ss.
#satchat
Even at the collegiate level, many of my classes have begun to insist on digital portfolios as a part of classes because of how they will benefit our future. #satchat
A6. Digital portfolios allow students to share their journey of growth as a person and a learner with a global audience. This benefits them with college admissions/careers etc. Resumes are a dying format. They also help kids start build a positive adult digital identity. #satchat
A6 Portfolios create a record of meaningful learning over time. At any point, the student can start conversations w/ parents and past & current teachers about how to make school more meaningful in the future. #satchat#empowerstudents
A6. Elementary- self selected pride pieces. My son picked pieces I wouldn't have chose for him in his portfolio but then he could tell me why and that provided more insight into how he sees himself. #satchat
That's it for the chat!
THANK YOU #satchat PLN
Saturday morning has always been a great learning time for me and I hope you.
If you have topics for the chat please DM me. We are building out next year's schedule.
Have a great week.
A6: At the HS level, we're prepping students for life AFTER HS, so the benefit to DPs will help them secure college scholarships, admissions, and jobs. #satchat
A6 Over years, Ss can literally incorporate their voice via audio & video clips. Imagine a HS senior listening to his/her thoughts from years past. Priceless! #satchat
Thank you, you're right, students aren't the only ones sharing their growth and accomplishments. And absolutely their portfolios should link to their artistic accomplishments. #satchat
A6. As an elem teacher, I see the ability 4 ss to witness growth and see how being intentional and purposeful can spur greater growth as key. Equipping that skill set early can really provide ms&hs teachers with driven/growth mindset ss. #satchat
Portfolios help Ss at every level see themselves as learners, that they -- like their portfolio -- are works in progress. Crucial with disengaged HS Ss. #satchat
A6: The benefit of a digital profolio at all education levels, PreK through higher education, is that it connects them to a learning community with every post. Students learn best from each other! #satchat
A6: I often struggled to remember progress over the year more than numerical data. Portfolios can show student directed progress of skills over a longer period of time and provide each teacher at each level better insight into the S. #satchat
Love that! Whole student” portfolios could boost confidence in low achieving and/or disadvantaged #students. They’d have visual proof of success in their life, wherever that might be.💡 #satchat#lightbulbmoment
Question 3: Do you see digital portfolios as a place to showcase finished work & projects only, or as the place to document the entire process from concept to finished product? #satchat
A6: For elem., students are gaining exposure & foundational skills for not only word processing/portfolios but how to be a good digital citizen. Middles gain momentum & confidence in growth & editing. High schoolers gain focus for college/career. #satchat
A6: Ss in MS can start to make connections btwn what they know and what they share online. Crafting a digital port. as a digital identity-for career + college- reinforces the 💡that what’s out there about you can be shaped by you and can be academic in nature, too. #satchat
Thank you for sharing your smarts with us and the world #satchat! We are better together. You can take bulb for a spin for free by redeeming this free 30-day trial: https://t.co/krbigccF8q Have a great weekend!
Thank You to our guess moderator @bulbapp and thank you our #PLN for making this another amazing #Satchat. Special thank you to the found fathers @bradmcurrie and @ScottRRocco. Thank You to all of our Vets!
#satchat is discussing student portfolios this morning. I encourage everyone who knows a child to check out this chat feed #satchat Children need to #growimagination beyond their current circumstances and have a record of their own growth and accomplishments. @WPS_ericatruban
Example: Girl making a book for senior project. Don't give me a leaflet. Put that thing on Amazon using Kindle Children's Book Creator. That's real! #satchat
#satchat I need to go back and read this whole chat. I wanna see what different and unique platforms other teachers r using to create their digital platforms and ways that they become more student generated. Thanks to all!
In the back of my mind thru all of this: Our portfolio at age 17, 15, 13 is of limited value later on. We've barely touched the surface of who we are. It does help lead to a lifetime of reflection (continuously building portfolios) and navigating a digital world. #satchat
Indeed. And share that Bookcreator with a class that is learning something similar because they need that info to help them complete a project #satchat
The very reason I #satchat is because today’s topic was something I knew very little about. Learning doesn’t stop on Saturday so thanks for great insight on DP’s today!
