Perfect! Data analysis is important in the life of a coach!
we are doing EOY NWEA testing now. We are liking it! Great job on your PD!
My other eduwin was playing counselor to many students struggling towards the end of the year with various things.
What does the EOY NWAE cover? Is is summative?

Tonight we are joined by . For more ideas on finishing the year strong follow the May challenge.
Greetings fellow Iowan! I always love seeing Iowa Coaches at Going to anything this summer that we may run into e/o
Let’s get started with tonight’s topic: Finishing the year strong - coaching to the
---> Q1: What are specific end of the year challenges coaches face?
A1 For me, it's the variety of tasks to do. I want to coach, prepare for next year, reflect on this year, etc. So much to do!
Q1 Great Q!As Lit Coach, staying out of Ts way(!) Offering 2 help, knowing they are focused on content. https://t.co/kMPLJOtuEE
---> Q1: What are specific end of the year challenges coaches face?
Janea in AZ, my trying to participate in chat on Twitter
A1: Since this is my 1st year as a coach, I'm struggling BIG time whether I'm making a difference.
This was my first year as IC, too. I hope yours was fun and successful!
A1: exhausted teachers working to summarize student learning as well as plan for next year-how to support when time is the need?
A1: Ts being less engaged/interested in coaching due to end of year assessments and activities.
A1: Completing the work of this school year, while also planning for the next.
A1: Teachers unwilling to plan for next year because they are worn out.
A1: wanting to coach while others wrap up. Ss checking out, end of year testing. Motivation in general.
That is true. How can we assist so they don't feel so worn out?
That sounds like an effective year to me. I could always do better, but I know I made a difference for Ts and Ss!
A1: going between 2 buildings, trying to meet the needs at both, supporting reflection when there is so much to do
A1: It's hard this time of year to have Ts capture, reflect on thoughts from this year set goals for next while thinking's fresh
Q2: How can you address the challenges to maximize the rest of the school year?
A1. We are year round-but Ts still so focused on last min prep for standardize testing that some can be less receptive
You are. It may not seem like it, but you are supporting Ts-it may be just by listening! https://t.co/peywh4yWJC
A1: Since this is my 1st year as a coach, I'm struggling BIG time whether I'm making a difference.
I think many can relate to this feeling. My first year as a coach too- it's been rough
first year is hard! You're making an impact through the trusting relationships you are building-will be your foundation.
A1: As mentoring coach it is challenging keeping new teachers working up until the last bell. Essential to keep our kids engaged.
So true - listening is such an important part of coaching as is empathy.
that's why we make teacher appreciation such a big deal. Gives Ts that final boost of motivation.
A2) Keep pointing out positives and year achievements & stress the benefits of coming in already prepared for next school year
A1: Another struggle is seeing what we need as a building and wanting to implement it all at the same time next year!
That's great. Celebrating teachers is critical. They need to feel appreciated!
I'm sure you did, Nancy! Coaching is challenging & sometimes a lonely job. If you spent time with Ts, you made a diff.
A2: Keep energy & positive attitude! Balance schedule & support in anyway possible
We need to show them we're here to support. For some, maybe teach a class for them so they can sit back & watch?
A2: Our coaches would work to support T's where their needs were. Giving them options as to what the focus would be.
A2: celebrate victories all around.
A2: I plan to find time to work with new coach recruit to freshen up as we wrap up!
A2: building excitement in Ts for next year and getting a jump start in those actionable next steps now!
Prefect time for working with new hire to start the year strong!
A2: Trying to remain invitational; pushing in to force coaching feels extra intrusive at the end of the year
A2: set attainable goals for the last few week, and goals for starting back in the fall.
A2: Consistent support & positive feedback helps keep everyone moving in the right direction. True for new t's as well as s's.
--> Q3: The end of the year has many distractions for teachers. How can coaches shift the focus to teaching to the ?
But don't give up. Ts will need Coach, even if it's just to process testing https://t.co/VDGSfo4m1I
A1. We are year round-but Ts still so focused on last min prep for standardize testing that some can be less receptive
A3) Kids want and need us to be present til the end - need to be safe socially and physically. Lots of fun to be had too!
But that can help build relationships. Ts would rather see coaches digging in that sitting in office.
A3: Ask questions! Take an interest in activities & learning targets. Showcase what's going on in classrooms & student learning
A3: don't let them become distractions. Incorporate them into teachable moments and curriculum.
A3: sometimes the end of the year can be the perfect time to offer support to teachers in risk taking; try something new
In so far as they relate to the fact that much of the diverse ways of their church.
A3: Being there to lend a hand is critical. Teachers are tired-may be losing steam. Being there to offer resources can be great.
A1 I caution you on this. Same feeling 3 yrs. ago. I began w/ creating cross-curricular skill list https://t.co/FbYel3IksB
A1: Another struggle is seeing what we need as a building and wanting to implement it all at the same time next year!
A2: Especially at end of year, put our agenda aside. Build relationships & capacity instead
A3 I've made the offer to Ts that I'm learning a new strategy & would just like kids to try it out. Ts have collected data for me.
I totally agree! Somehow seems like lower risk! https://t.co/6Ak1Tfzgc2
A3: sometimes the end of the year can be the perfect time to offer support to teachers in risk taking; try something new
A3: end of year is great time for stretching practice-suggest Ts try something new as a trial for next year
A3: letting Ts have some inquiry into their instruction. Using the time to reflect not only w/their Ss but w/themselves
Does this "test-prep" push stifle our teachers? Why do we do this?
A3 Can also offer to help plan some type of end of year celebration unit for Ts and Ss.
Feels safer - have all of summer to reflect and make improvements!
Yes, but as Coach come in with some kind of plan so it's not perceived as T overload
What a great idea! https://t.co/PHrRu8Sras
A3 Can also offer to help plan some type of end of year celebration unit for Ts and Ss.
A3) helping teachers close out well is as important as opening well. What happens at the end carries kids into & through summer
A3 I've seen Coaches offer to read to classrooms while they do a needed task for a little bit. Relationship building!
Yes. I always refused to do it. Had best results on tests. Hmm. Correlation?
Q4: What can be done in the last month to encourage students to keep learning through summer (to avoid summer slide)?
A3 I think it's about being present and visible. When we keep working, others notice that.
A3: Focusing on why we are here - all students learning and giving them an equal opportunity as others
So true! We have to narrow our focus. Give ourselves & our colleagues bite-sized pieces to work on
I share snacks and treats with Ss & Ts I've coached this year. My way of saying thxs! https://t.co/924VOvMH4z
What a great idea! https://t.co/PHrRu8Sras
A3 Can also offer to help plan some type of end of year celebration unit for Ts and Ss.
Exactly! https://t.co/vMGmNxbYOj
A3 I think it's about being present and visible. When we keep working, others notice that.
A3: Utilize lessons that take advantage of the amazing energy kids have this time of year. Channel it in a positive direction.
Not my ideas-encouraging Ts ideas, they worry it is too late to start for this class-never to late!
A4: More inquiry based lessons that may inspire more curiosity Also modeling that we continue learning year-round!
I was just reflecting on that today;got "stuck" in my office w/paperwork; added a pall to my day; need interaction
I like that strategy! I'll have to try it!
When I was a coach and had a little down time I tried to find small grants to help them write. We received some amazing stuff!
A4: Sharing resources that are engaging so kids have a "fun" way to engage in academics in summer months
Great point! More success than trying at kickoff of busy new year https://t.co/p3HTMFGOsE
Feels safer - have all of summer to reflect and make improvements!
Q4: Maybe make book trailers of good books to read over summer and have a reading contest
and word gets out we know what we're doing! Today T tried to see me, but I was always working w/ someone!
yes - Coaches can help provide great resources. https://t.co/LigfdQtzOY
A4: Sharing resources that are engaging so kids have a "fun" way to engage in academics in summer months
Sorry I'm late! I'm a Division Level Instructional Coach in Fairfax, VA
A4: providing students with opportunities for voice and choice; let Ss explore their own learning and gain empowerment/motivation
A4: Because I'm passionate about reading, we start identify fiction & nonfiction titles they should add to their reading lists.
A4: Make learning fun and engaging - help students find their passion so they are intrinsically motivated to learn
Welcome. We never count tardies here. :) Glad you could join us.
A3: Remove the distractions as possible & leave teachers in classrooms
Yes! Voice & choice lead to ownership and increased motivation! awesome. https://t.co/4xvOWwYacm
A4: providing students with opportunities for voice and choice; let Ss explore their own learning and gain empowerment/motivation
A4: Offer to set them up on a virtual book club. Maybe set one up with the teacher in a google doc. Something simple. :)
I do this as well. Send out an email of strat & see which Ts would like me to come in. https://t.co/8ESi87VBKP
A3 I've made the offer to Ts that I'm learning a new strategy & would just like kids to try it out. Ts have collected data for me.
A4. We try to set up summer reading clubs. We also try to have fun mini classes during breaks long enough to have them. Also tutor
A4) I always wrote students over the summer, encouraging them & they would write back what they have been doing.
Yes - Coaches & Admin can work to remove the barriers and distractions allowing to teach to the https://t.co/BL9uFD1VGv
A3: Remove the distractions as possible & leave teachers in classrooms
A4: Model yearlong learning for Ss AND Ts by offering to help w/summer programs; summer school, camps, orientations, clubs
amazing! Something they'll remember, for sure!
I've created a Coaches Feedback form, so Ts can share w/ me how I can improve to support them
A4: Get kids connected through social media to book challenges, websites, blogs, etc that might peak their interest in reading
--> Q5: What is done in your school to foster teacher reflection at end of year & to plan for new growth over summer/next year?
And feeling (positive or negative) can linger thru summer! We want Ts to return wanting to wrk w/ us
A4: share local library, community ed, and online resources with families and students
A5: I think we could improve in this area - such a focus on Ss we often forget to reflect on ourselves & plan intentionally
A4: Encourage kids to share what they believe would be valuable learning opportunities they can take advantage of.
One more thing - I make homemade treats for most PLCs. I know that seems trite, but Ts LOVE the thought of being appreciated
Ss will ask me for reading recommendations because they know I am a reader.
Involved leadership team in brainstorming areas for growth. PD is both celebratory and reflective
A5 One thing we've been doing w/our Teacher Leaders is goal setting and reflecting all year. They keep notes in a composition book
A5: Gaining feedback from our Ts is so important. We ask Ts to reflect about needs through building/team/individual implications
A5 So hard at both of my buildings with brand new admin still trying to find their focus.
A5) We did long-range plans. It was great to reflect on yr and intentionally plan for upcoming year for more projects
Treats are a great way to teachers' hearts! https://t.co/oe4YOUxATq
One more thing - I make homemade treats for most PLCs. I know that seems trite, but Ts LOVE the thought of being appreciated
A5: We have GAP goals teachers look at and reflect on. I think what may help next year is the start of PLC process!
I love this! https://t.co/cAMbcAyaw2
A5 One thing we've been doing w/our Teacher Leaders is goal setting and reflecting all year. They keep notes in a composition book
A5: Freshman academy teachers meet & discuss our kids:celebrating successes & taking a hard look at where we feel we fell short.
We will be using notebook to reflect on our year together next week.
A5: Would love to see a video journal. Support teacher & students to do this as a project. :)
A5: have been asking teams where they would hope to be at this time next year and discussing with them
We might have to show Ts how to use voice & choice-some may be worried about loss of 'control'
We just had an admin shuffle this week. It changes so much!
A5: We've also been identifying areas 4team & personal growth, and immediate next steps👣Sealed in envelope to pull out in Fall
Would love to get this rolling at my buildings. https://t.co/D5iHg88WlE
We will be using notebook to reflect on our year together next week.
A5 hi! We r doing a "take it deeper" 1 tool SAMR style planning workshop for 2016-17
Great question to get ppl thinking ahead in a positive way! No strings attached - DREAM! https://t.co/iFg0SUacOJ
A5: have been asking teams where they would hope to be at this time next year and discussing with them
--> Q6: What are ways to build excitement for the coming year, while remaining grounded in the present?
when vision is shifting/up in air/unclear can certainly be a coaching barrier since we are vision shapers/aligners
Yrs ago I created presentation, "The Value of Failure" & took it on the road. Successful. Today it's called 'grit'!
Love the sealed envelope https://t.co/TgZ0alunL7
A5: We've also been identifying areas 4team & personal growth, and immediate next steps👣Sealed in envelope to pull out in Fall
Sorry... I'm really late! Lost track of time (easy to do this time of year)!
A4 help Ss find themselves in the learning throughout the year, keep it authentic to keep them curious
“: A5: have been asking teams where they would hope to be at this time next year and discussing with them ” Great idea!
A6: have a goal for the remaining weeks that is attainable and can serve as the first of several action steps for the next year
A6: Document goals while ideas -what worked/didn't work - r fresh in mind, providing feedback 2coaches regarding desired future PD
I think I could use this with a teacher that expressed disappointment with assessment scores
Allow Ts some "wish time" Envisioning what could be in our "perfect" classrooms can be a firestarter https://t.co/VpCDUhibSS
--> Q6: What are ways to build excitement for the coming year, while remaining grounded in the present?
A6 Setting aside time to plan forward in PD or PLC is helpful.
A6) I have noticed collaborating on ideas for projects has built a lot of excitement for upcoming yr. More minds, more ideas
A6: I'm in the process of making a teaser/sneak preview of fun stuff for next year
A6. Our system is in a MAJOR transformation this and next year. It helps Ts to know we are helping them meet new demands/needs.
A6: Showing how they are interconnected and a continuation of a professional journey rather than a means to an end.
Had a whole new admin team start 1st semester. Really threw us for a loop. Gaining traction now
Factored into this truth.
A6.2 involve as many teachers as possible in the planning/dreaming for next year. Build excitement through collaboration
A6: Select key areas to move to in the Fall. New projects like video in the classroom, student blogging. Plan 4 this!
Tell me more about SAMR...
A6: This is the perfect time of year to look both forward and back. Write or revise your coaching vision and plan.
A6: Celebrations build excitement! Also collaborating to create theme for next year, focusing on the positive
agreed, actionable steps are key! Go for the small gains now to result in the big wins later.
Better late than never! Valerie here from the ISD in Missouri!
Awesome idea! I may steal this! https://t.co/YEp33gQNfK
A6: I'm in the process of making a teaser/sneak preview of fun stuff for next year
A6: Make plans w/ colleagues to meet periodically to share new lesson ideas & share resources. Build on each other's strengths.
And write it alongside the Ts who are honing their own visions and plans https://t.co/aBwWyFztrd
A6: This is the perfect time of year to look both forward and back. Write or revise your coaching vision and plan.
Kathy here late final touches large prof learning tomorrow
YES!! I'm excited . . . it can be contagious! https://t.co/Zoxg9sAFby
A2: building excitement in Ts for next year and getting a jump start in those actionable next steps now!
Agreed! I know next yr, instead of asking STs if they need help; I'm going 2 set up appts w/ them right away
Welcome. Glad you could join us!
---> Q7 Do you have specific questions for each other in regards to finishing the year strong?
...and invite colleagues onto Twitter so they can continue personalized learning throughout summer 🤓🎉👌🏽
Ts love to collaborate providing time is productive! I always go to mtg w/ resources & research
Welcome. Glad you joined us!
Our admin are building time into next year's schedule for regular group planning and sharing! ! https://t.co/EuikqkGGag
A6: Make plans w/ colleagues to meet periodically to share new lesson ideas & share resources. Build on each other's strengths.
But 4 a brand new T it can be a welcome at the end of the yr when things feel like they're falling apart https://t.co/Kea3oocBqW
A2: Trying to remain invitational; pushing in to force coaching feels extra intrusive at the end of the year
A6: Connect with teachers outside your department/grade level! Look for ways to share and learn from their expertise.
Good point. New teachers have never finished a year and would LOVE a coaches support. https://t.co/tYeqZvVUQC
But 4 a brand new T it can be a welcome at the end of the yr when things feel like they're falling apart https://t.co/Kea3oocBqW
A2: Trying to remain invitational; pushing in to force coaching feels extra intrusive at the end of the year
thanks! Use if you can - Ts loved!
Q8: We say often say we “surviving” the end of the year; is it possible to “thrive”?
Small gains help build confidence & empowerment in Ts. We create a ripple effect!
A7: Do any of you have reflection questions you prefer to use w/ Ts in regards to getting feedback on your coaching for the year?
We hand some Ts new to Prison Teaching. Even though they are seasoned they still need extra support!
Yes, have a plan to the very end! https://t.co/8IEq1cUUzA
Q8: We say often say we “surviving” the end of the year; is it possible to “thrive”?
A8: Absolutely possible! When Ts can acknowledge their growth and successes they realize that they're not just surviving
---> Q9: We all know self-care is so important! What are you doing for yourself to avoid the end of the year burnout?
A8:most definitely! We have to remember to reflect and celebrate even the small wins. Ts need to feel celebrated too= thriving on!
appreciate your generosity, Rashida!
A8: I think if we relish in our successes, we can thrive!
A8: If we work to lift each other up, we can thrive. No one should be going it alone. Connect with your Tribe!
Great question! https://t.co/r4QdbjvGc1
---> Q9: We all know self-care is so important! What are you doing for yourself to avoid the end of the year burnout?
Absolutely! Send me a DM if you need anything else!
Continued informal collaboration with colleagues. https://t.co/CYRhmS0USs
---> Q9: We all know self-care is so important! What are you doing for yourself to avoid the end of the year burnout?
A9 Today I dug in the dirt. Lots of weeds in the garden due to all the rain we are getting.
Thriving, for me, is the result of keeping students engaged & active while keeping myself prepared (grades, etc)=less stress.
A9: Taking a day off to enjoy the 100th running of Indy500 festivities!
A9. I make time to read something fun and exciting. I also have fun with my kids at the pool during swim season! &Netflix Binge!
A9: Planning July getaways 😝😎😍 ...and focusing on maintaining positive relationships
Yes!!! I can't forget Netflix binges!!
Q10: What are some take-aways for you from tonight’s chat to finish strong to the
OMG - so cute!!! Thank you for your work as a pet foster. I have a rescue dog of my own.
I agree - I'd have to start on paper.
A10: Don't forget the personal stuff to stay uplifted, netflix, pool, get aways, etc. Thx !
❤️❤️❤️ ": Spending time with my second love--animal rescue. Right now? Fostering these three' "
A10: Reflection is powerful-especially when thinking ahead to next steps. Remember to celebrate w/Ts growth & success of the year!
If we expect teachers and students to set goals and grow, coaches need to model and lead the way!
A10: Gratefuk I joined before the last bell 😝 making a note to put these chats on my calendar. Reminder to celebrate success w/Ts
I live next to an animal rescuer. We always have friends in the neighborhood.
A9: Making list of things to get done, checking off. Getting into the classroom to support Ts & Ss- That's what I <3
A10: Goal notebooks, previews of upcoming "attractions," tips on motivating kids w/NWEA MAP. etc. etc.
