#MasteryChat is a weekly chat with a growing family of educators from around the word focused on teaching better and reaching more students. Topics cover an array of challenges and solutions for teachers of all grade levels and subject areas, admins, and support staff.
#MasteryChat occurs every Thursday at 8:00pm eastern.
The chat was created by team at @thegridmethod, but is hosted by guest moderators each week. Our primary moderators are @techieteachott, @raehugart, and @jeffgargas.
I’m Chad from @teachbetterteam and creator of #thegridmethod! From OHIO! I love working with teachers, schools and districts to increase achievement and reach ALL students! Ready for a fun #MasteryChat
Tiffany Ott here! 9th grade math teacher at @WRApioneers and part of the crew at @teachbetterteam. I LOVE #Masterychat and the super awesome #PLN we have created here.
Looking forward to a great chat with @MrsHankinsClass about how we ALL are reading teachers!
Ray, K-8 Math Instructional Coach from Rhode Island here #masterychat
Don’t forget to join us for #edChatRI this Sunday at 8pm EST. This week we have a special guest the @ATMNEmath Conference and @rimtamath!
Hey there girlfriend! So pumped you are hosting tonight! Kristen 3rd grade Pittsburgh. Ready to make things happen with my people! ♥️📚 #MasteryChat#Nan3EDU
A1: Effective anticipatory discussion/activities can be a good hook. I chunk with cliffhangers then lead a speculation discussion, too. “Contents of the Dead Man’s Pockets” took 7 episodes. Builds suspense! #MasteryChat
Hey all! Louie jumping in for a little bit before I get back to work. 5th grade teacher in Philly. Hope to fill my bucket a little with an amazing PLN! #masterychat
A1 - I teach US History, so I will frequently hook with photographs, video clips, history gifs and memes, sound clips/speeches, and quotes. I make the text relatable to them to start, and I share my enthusiasm! #masterychat
A1: I have found that a great way to "hook" readers is to dress in character. I can not wait to dress like Franny K. Stein this year to introduce our kids to the Jim Benton series!
#MasteryChat
Hey #Masterychat Brent from Magrath. 2 weeks out from #NCTE and meeting so many friends. On the way to watch High school football in the rain at 3 degrees so will be in and out.
A1 - Engaging topics, premises and brininging in their interests! I used popular TV shows, characters etc, in some of my word problems and reading scenarios #masterychat
A1: I try to hook my students by getting them excited and relating the reading to their daily lives. I love @scholastic because I use storyworks, and my students love it because it is high interest. #masterychat
A1.1: It was a lot of fun to bring the Magic School Bus series to life when my partner @StephenHurst14 & I dressed like Ralphie & Arnold last week for Book Character Day too! The kids were so excited and love the series even more now!
#MasteryChat
A1: Right now I am using #ScholasticAction magazine and students get to choose 3 articles we're reading together...giving them choices is a way of hooking them in reading #masterychat
A1. Unfortuntely, I fee like I'm not doing this as well as I want to right now due to pressures of Scope and Sequence, but I love the idea of environmental changes in the classroom to draw in students! #masterychat
A1: 1. Use student interest to guide you. 2. Let your own passion and enthusiasm shine through. 3. Connect learning to real life & let them see how reading transfers to the world around them. #MasteryChat
A1: During guided reading, we track progress and try to go up to next level. Students talk about leveling up and our excited to read more challenging books. #masterychat
A1: I hook my students to read by first hooking them to the TOPIC they are reading about! It helps when we are learning about different events in history to give them a question or a piece of info that they would want to explore #masterychat#risdconnects@RISDTnLSS
A1: for reading I really work to give my Ss a choice in what we read - I do the reading while they are ear reading. We stop as needed to talk about what is going on. Their pick makes it an easy "hook". #masterychat
#masterychat A1- if you get them engaged then they will stay with it. I dressed as a flight attendant for a virtual trip around the world to study global diseases
Hello #MasteryChat Folks! Heather here from Upstate NY. Music teacher who loved teaching reading turned tech integration newbie who still loves teaching reading and sings in the hallways 😁🎶💕
A1: Make sure they know the answer to both "why should I care" and "how do I know you (the teacher) care?" Whatever they're reading has to have a purpose. It's really easy to skim over/not do the reading when the why is not clear. #masterychat
A1: Giving them some choice in what they read, and if it has to be on a specific topic, some meaningful purpose as to what they will do with the info or why they need to read it. #masterychat
A2: I like to deliver text via Google docs, and I chunk text and asked a targeted question about it using the comment feature that the Ss answer by replying. #MasteryChat
A1: I give them a lot of choice in what they read. I also model what being 'hooked' on a book looks like. I read to them with enthusiasm and passion. I laugh out loud and cry at the sad parts. I talk about how the book reminds me of my life. #MasteryChat
One question in, and @MrsHankinsClass is already rocking it. Such an amazing educator with a heart of gold. Truly never ceases to inspire me. #masterychat
A1: 1. Use student interest to guide you. 2. Let your own passion and enthusiasm shine through. 3. Connect learning to real life & let them see how reading transfers to the world around them. #MasteryChat
A1. Find what interests Ss and have them pick those books out to read. Read aloud. Bring books to life. Model a love for reading. Sometimes read a book then show them the movie and compare the similarities and differences. #masterychat
A1 I read aloud everyday to my babies. We're currently reading Wishtree by @kaaauthor I also pair up my other subjects with books that go along with what we're reading. I'm excited because we just got a new app called @BookCreatorApp so they get to create also! #masterychat
A1 - I’ve found that “hooking” students on reading starts with our own love of reading. We always pick books or topics that relate to what their interests are. #masterychat
A1: Since I am the “overly excited about the book we will be reading and probably take it too far” type person, I usually garner pretty decent motivation. Finding ways to make sure the books are relevant to students. Allowing students to have choice. #MasteryChat
A2: I keep Ss engaged by reading in different voices. Some kids love reading. Some don’t. It’s our job as Ts to make reading fun so that all kids do! Read in character or w/an accent! I promise it will be more fun for Ss & you! #MasteryChat

A1 we start class reading news headlines online in Spanish. Kids know so much more than they think. Cognates, context clues, prior knowledge #masterychat
A1 Lots of choices. I try to help them find a genre or author that they love, then go from there. Read Alouds also are a great way to hook them. #MasteryChat
#masterychat - A1 -one of my favorite teaching moments was when a student was moving away, and his last wish was for me to read picture books for the class in funny accents like I do with my daughter. This started a semi regular math book/funny accent read aloud in 7th grade math
A2 - Intro reading in diff. ways. For SS, paragraph shrinking, frequent whole-class Brain Dumps, partner reads, and using tech tools helps keep Ss engaged. Also, a simple trick is to let them read where they want in the classroom. Lay down! Sit in the corner! Relax! #masterychat
A1 books in my [French] class are mostly kid's books since that's the level of communication most of them are at right now- they're hooked by comparing it to the Eng versions. When reading content-related materials, they compare those texts to their own experience #masterychat
A1: No matter what is being read, I try to share a personal connection. And I'm always honest- sometimes, I'll admit to not enjoying a certain text or reading piece, but share ways I've made it easier to make it though. #masterychat
A2: Tardy as usual. Find out what interests the students. Target what they find enjoyable and make that the focus of reading. Awaken the love for reading. #masterychat
A2: ask them questions! Show them you are interested in what they are reading...it gets them excited I tell you more and to continue reading so they can continue to share #MasteryChat
A1.2 I also have a pretty good size library in my room and listen out to what they like so I can add more. Currently, I have a Minecraft group, so I added a few books this past Monday. #masterychat
A1 Give readers choice and make sure to have a wide variety of books that everyone can find something to relate with. Important for Ss to see themselves in the books they read as well! #masterychat
Love hearing you read aloud everyday. Have you heard about #BookoftheDay ? I love how this idea would help students reflect on previous read books. #MasteryChat
In reply to
@4XSoccermom, @kaaauthor, @BookCreatorApp
A2. The only way to keep kids engaged is by promoting passion and choice reading. We do not have nearly enough time to do this right now. I want to see if I can sneak in a block of some silent choice reading time. #masterychat
A2: I like sharing what I am reading with my students...I find that when I tell students I've read a book I'm recommending, they would be more likely to take it and read it. THIS promotes their reading engagement #masterychat
A1: In AP Lit we speed date every year. Ss fill out a Menu based on the novels they meet and dine with, and then choose one from there for independent reading units. Definitely hooks them in and it's tons of fun! #MasteryChat
Speed Dating Literary Merit in #EngstormAPLit19. Dining at the iconic Bistro Littéraire, talking through tastiest aspects of our date (served on silver platters), discussing appeal and whether they would be our first course; all amidst incredible ambiance (and fun)!
#aplitchat
A2: I try to have individual reading conferences with each student, and I am doing a 50 book challenge with my students. I also let students read and, when we read a play, I let them have different parts so that they can immerse themselves in their character. #masterychat
A2: I encourage them to draw to support their thinking and comprehension. We pull in our own stories that relate. We use @Flipgrid to share our thoughts and reply back. #masterychat
A1: For math, often times we act out the word problems. I’ll call kids up front & have them pretend they’re holding 56 lemons...everyone has fun & they get into the “story” of the problem that way #masterychat
A2) stop the story and ask them to predict what's next. High level thinking if you ask them to justify their reasoning. In science, I would always bring in the humanity story behind the topic.
#MasteryChat
A1 I never made my students read just for the sake of reading. There was always a reason behind it
Whether it was reading for pleasure reading for knowledge reading to prove a point reading to get directions and so on #MasteryChat
A2: Relevance, reflection, and a day in how they will share what they have read. I love seeing students present in different ways. It encourages creativity and acknowledges their strengths. Have Ss: Make text connections. Rewrite storylines. Develop characters. #masterychat
A2: Two powerful tools are emotions and curiosity. 🤔 Make it something that evokes a strong emotional response or leaves them so curious to find out more. #MasteryChat
A1: I try to pick books based off of student interest. I find that students are much more motivated this way. If they don’t have an interest, I try to provide background knowledge and activate schema on the topic to form some kind of connection #MasteryChat
A2: When reading to kids, one of my favorite ways is to build in kinesthetic reactions. I learned it from my fourth grade teacher, and it’s still applicable. When Ss hear a vocab word (or another cue), they stand up. Increases oxygen to the brain, too! #masterychat
A1- I love making the reading fun a meaningful. One of my favorite things to do is have book celebrations with my class once we finish a book! #Masterychat
A2: Two powerful tools are emotions and curiosity. 🤔 Make it something that evokes a strong emotional response or leaves them so curious to find out more. #MasteryChat
A2: When I read to them, I step outside of myself and walk around the room and try to make it entertaining and it works! My 8th graders are too cool for everything but even they'd be engaged by the 3 Little Pigs if I can read it in a not-so-Mr Anderson way #masterychat
A2 - List below
1. Make sure you set it up
2. Show your own enthusiasm.
3. Recognize their own interests
4. Always model a love of reading
5. Be patient with kids who are initially skeptical
6. Lots of options
7. Have them read to the class
8. Praise #MasteryChat
When I model read aloud for primary Ed I use a document camera and silly voices - the kids engagement is sky high as they can see the graphics and words better and enjoy my enthusiasm for reading #MasteryChat
A1 By making it relevant! Being a math teacher, so much of what my students need to be able to do is interact with and understand word problems. Don't use a random problem about so &so cutting wood boards into 4 equal peices... Use something that is relevant to them! #masterychat
A3: I am hoping that #Newsela will help with that with its Lexile scaling. I also use inline vocab work. In other words, I don’t have many tricks. :( #MasteryChat
A2: I have created slideshows that go along with a book they are ready for more visualization and clarification. Have open discussions about the book. #MasteryChat
A2: choice and exposure to new pieces of text. Students should have a choice as much as possible. I also take away graphic organizers, notes, etc...allow kids to just read and let conversations flow naturally. #masterychat
A1 #masterychat Find out what interests & excites them. Using this, draw books that align with their interests. Read alouds, book talks, T & S recommendations are helpful as well
A2: I keep kids reading by using strategies like chunking, or having activities every so often through a text. It helps give them a breather if they aren’t a strong reader and keeps them engaged #masterychat#risdconnects@RISD_STEM4All
A2 When reading aloud, I really get into character. I also include their input, encourage making connections. When reading to self, I try to keep a good selection of books, magazines, comics, cookbooks, etc. for them to enjoy. #masterychat
A2: we are using #sketchnotes and the Ss love it. Discussion is always key as well. The Ss LOVE to tell me what is going on and what they think will happen next. Building a culture of reading is so important. #MasteryChat
A2: If you are reading to the kids, one way to hook them is by using @screencastify! Have the students read along at their own pace by uploading the T reading their book to YouTube. Ss can adjust the speed of the video and read along. (1/2) #MasteryChat
A2 During read aloud get into character and show excitement, they will be engaged. When I do #principalreadalouds I like to have an activity connected with book. #masterychat
A1: More than "require" reading, I inspire reading through always asking myself, "why should they read this?" If I can come up with a good reason for myself, I will do a much better job selling it to Ss. #masterychat
A1 - By letting them read what they WANT to! It’s more THAT they are reading than WHAT they reading. Reading what they love fosters a love of reading! #MasteryChat
A3: I noticed a S who is a good reader, but had difficulty staying engaged. So, I asked him what he thought would help. He said he wanted a book buddy. I thought he meant a reading partner—he did, just the stuffed animal kind! We now have #BookBuddies!
#MasteryChat
A2 - reading aloud and using my voice to really create the character. Then I ask them to read in their heads but create different voices. You will hear them giggle to themselves because they are having fun! #masterychat
A2. Students are more interested in reading materials when they get to choose what they want to read! To keep them engaged, sit and talk with them about a book, ask questions to them about their reading material. #masterychat
A2: I try to keep Ss engaged in reading by making the book interactive in some way - through small group or class discussions, conferencing, etc. #MasteryChat
Tell me more about how you use Flipgrid! Do students respond to each others videos? I'd love lots more details if you are willing to share! #masterychat
A2 I love to use sketch notes while we are reading aloud. It’s a great way to quickly check if they are understanding. I also think it’s never too early to show kids how to take notes and annotate text as they are reading. No requirements just say readers take notes #MasteryChat
A2: Have students practice their own reading fluency with @screencastify by having them record reading their books out loud. They can reflect easily. #MasteryChat
A2 I keep my kids engaged in read aloud by using my document camera or I will scan a book in and use smart board- the kids love being able to see the graphics and words- along with my enthusiam and silly voices -it’s quite the show! #MasteryChat
A2 This is Ss/class specific..length of the read and activity associated with the content...I have used Google Forms recently with embedded youtube clips to reinforce the content with giving an additional example and assist with attention #MasteryChat
A2: when doing a read aloud, I harness every last acting skill & go for it. Voices, gestures, theatrics...I’m on stage & try to draw them in through my mad skills. They’re 8, so pretty easy to please. 😂 #masterychat
A3: This is a daily struggle, and every student is different. Some just need some direction, others need a different version (audio, graphic novel, etc), and some really just refuse to read. Looking forward to reading responses for more ideas! #masterychat
#aplitchat
A3: I encourage students by really making it engaging. I have them not only reading, but include visuals and activities so that they don’t feel like they’re behind. I will also use funny voices and read aloud to keep them engaged. (Sometimes we act it out) @RISDTnLSS#masterychat
A3: I have a student who loves horses, and I went shopping to find books that I knew she would love. I strongly believe that every student likes to read. It is just the fact that some have not found the right book yet. #masterychat
We do a For the Love of Reading Series where we record a T reading a book of their choice and post it to FB for families to share with their littles in the comfort of their house. We need to do something like this w/ QRcodes so families can easily go back to them. #masterychat
In reply to
@mjjohnson1216, @4XSoccermom, @kaaauthor, @BookCreatorApp
A3: I find what interests them. I had a Student who would only read comic books. After some digging on some of his outside interests, I collected a bunch of graphic novels for him to read. Which really expanded his reading abilities. #masterychat
A2: Incorporate reflection throughout the whole reading- not just the beginning and end. Make sure students understand the importance and can share it! #MasteryChat
A3.1: Another way I have encouraged kids to read is by using flashlights. They really enjoy reading with the little finger flashlights and look forward to our weekly #FlashlighFriday.
#MasteryChat
A2– I LOVE grabbing a book of my own for the first 5-10 minutes of independent reading & modeling to my students my own personal independent reading! I do this before moving around to confer with students. They are always interested in my current book! #MasteryChat
A3 - See A2 and start with something they like. Keep it simple and even do one on one reading. Patience and persistence pays off if we understand the fear or anxiety that comes with kids who lack confidence or just haven’t had success in reading. #masterychat
A3 - Find out what engages and motivates them and start by tying that into their reading. Most students WILL read about what interests. You should also ensure that no barriers exist in terms of accessing the text. #masterychat.
A3 I have been tutoring a S for 3 years. We have tried almost every genre and have finally found that graphic novels are the best fit. Not babyish, lots of picture support and compelling characters #MasteryChat
A3 Being an ELL myself who was forced to read in front of the class before I was ready I didn’t develop a love for reading. I share with my Ss that info and explain the importance of reading. #masterychat
Every time I have done that, they wind up bringing in dozens of suggestions the next day. They are so eager and excited to share what THEY are interested in! #MasteryChat
A2b: I also try to have Ss approach reading through an author’s lens. Reading becomes more engaging b/c Ss are thinking about it in a deeper way and they also look for techniques and ideas to use in their own writing. #MasteryChat
A3 - I like to use the “I do, We do, You do” method for struggling Ss. I model first, then the S and I do it together, and finally the S does it on their own. It builds trust, partnership, a willingness to take a risk, and confidence. #masterychat
A1 - I teach US History, so I will frequently hook with photographs, video clips, history gifs and memes, sound clips/speeches, and quotes. I make the text relatable to them to start, and I share my enthusiasm! #masterychat
A3: I turn reading into something other than “reading”...rename it, maybe they are word explorers or sentence pirates. Give Ss a special item to wear or fun activity to do as they go...maybe after one page is complete they’ve unlocked a pirate chest or draw a picture #MasteryChat
A1: With the main lit pieces, I will start teasing “the best parts” the week before (pre-hook? 🤔). I am working this year to shift away from pre-reading journals (yawn) to introducing related visual/audio media/resources as a hook before approaching the text. #MasteryChat
A3 I have been tutoring a S for 3 years. We have tried almost every genre and have finally found that graphic novels are the best fit. Not babyish, lots of picture support and compelling characters #MasteryChat
A2: if you are reading to them, use different voices and make the story come alive with music, puppets, etc then let them do the same on their own or for you 💕 #MasteryChat
A3: I challenge the notion that they don’t like to read. “How do you learn how to play your fave video game? Or order at a restaurant? What about learning your face athlete’s sports stats?” Reading is everywhere- sometimes we need to reframe their thinking. #masterychat
A3a: I give them all sorts of ways to read. They can read picture books, graphic novels, chapter books. They can listen to a book on tape and follow along. They can read to themselves or to someone else. They can read to the therapy dog we sometimes have at school. #MasteryChat
Q3- I have worked hard to build my classroom library & know what is in school library so I can help find a just right fit-I check out library books for kids all the time! #masterychat
A2: My favorite tactic is modeling/teaching #makingconnections . My 1st lessons of the #3rdgrade yr are what kinds of connections we make when we rd. Then my 1st several assignments are having Ss leave comments in @GoogleForEdu slideshows telling their comments. #masterychat
A3- I just co-created a fishing book with a Ss using all of his own pictures. He has a copy for home and one for school and he's so proud of it- it's an entry point for him and he can feel successful and proud #masterychat
A3: Keep trying to build that reading culture. Love what I saw @KellyGToGo who read 1-2 minute cliffhangers everyday from a a different book..Let kids borrow if interested....Let kids bring in their own to read to class #masterychat
A4: #Newsela, interactive Google docs, #FlipGrid draft reading, and #CanvasLMS’ new Stimulus question feature to simulate standardized testing scenarios. My marked up Gdocs sometimes include directions that require quick internet searches to produce DOK1 answers. #MasteryChat
I think by being strategy in getting to know the students interest and provide books that students can feel successful is enough to change some of that. Setting goals for reading skills and tracking so they can see they are growing!#masterychat
A3: finding books they love is key. My goal is to get my Ss to love reading. I will read with them and encourage them at their level, create goals to grow #MasteryChat
A3b: Giving them lots of different opportunities with lots of types of texts can eventually narrow it down into something they DO like - then I take it and run with it #MasteryChat
A3 build them up. Really celebrate their successes and encourage failure as a sign of their efforts to improve. Encourage them in every way you can #MasteryChat
@lynzhite and I found multiple poems for our potential and kinetic energy unit. Ss picked the poems based on interest and had to find connections (kinnections… Haha) #MasteryChat
#masterychat A2- make it something they can relate to- we are about to start the stock market game so they are reading up on different companies that peak their interest @RSScrew
A3: To boost engagement for relunctant readers, go read outside, inside reading with flashlights, in a fun place in the classroom (under tables/fun nooks/etc) - and help Ss find books that matter to them with topics/characters that they are interested in! #MasteryChat
A3: I think it is important to meet students where they’re at (reading level, interests, goals) and give them ways for developing self-efficacy in their abilities. Keep positive. Recognize/celebrate all successes. Offer choice. Let Ss lead/read a story for the class #masterychat
A3: It's important to ASK students why and where they are struggling with their reading. I had a conversation with a student yesterday and after learning her struggle, we learned how to chuck long text and annotate as we read.
International support is imperative #masterychat
A3:I think by being strategic in getting to know the students interest and provide books that students can feel successful is enough to change some of that. Setting goals for reading skills and tracking so they can see they are growing!#masterychat
A2: Turn and talk during read aloud and Post Its for noticings and wonderings during independent reading. Then, share ideas and make it social, create a community.#masterychat
A3) I don't give them answers. You have the entirety of human knowledge in your hand. Ask the question to your phone and read something to find the answer. Even if it's the title of the right YouTube video. Accessing information is a crucial skill.
#MasteryChat
A2: I am nosey. I always pick their books up, read the back, and ask them if they like it and why, but I really only do this with the ss who like to read and have books on their desks, lol! #masterychat
A3: Find a way for them to experience success with reading. Maybe it's a certain level of text, a different genre, a fun poem instead of a whole book, or a comic or graphic novel. Once you find a way in, the possibilities open up. #masterychat#literacyforall
#masterychat - A3 - obviously I’m not a reading teacher, but I can relate to this in math class when students see a word problem and just shut down. You’ve got to encourage the growth mindset and reinforce how important it is to be able to apply things we learn to the real world
A3: I have a “Book Off” where I take books that kids love and just read a few pages-then grab the other book and read a few. It is exciting and hooks them into the moment. Many don’t like to read bc they don’t know what they love! Must find their purpose! #Nan3EDU#MasteryChat
A3 I think it is so important to help kids find their love of reading. I used to love being read to, but would hate reading independently. Once I found books that interested me and I gained my cofidence I have loved it. I hope to help kids in the same way. #masterychat
A1 my kids are hooked on technical manuals right now as we are researching vintage cameras and they are using the cameras and manuals to create YouTube Demonstrations - the hook is figuring out how things work- interest is everything! #masterychat
A4: I haven't been able to do this yet, but I plan on using @flipgrid so that my Ss can create book trailers. I also plan on using @classroomq for individual student reading conferences. #masterychat
A3 I encourage partner reading and listening to reading. They LOVE to read on @EpicKidsBooks They also use their science website because they can hear the books read on there. #masterychat
A3– I partner up with Ss and read the same book along side those very hesitant readers...They feel very special when I read the same book as them and I have found it’s a way to help hold the accountable! ( think of a miniature book club) #MasteryChat
A3: We talk a lot about their reading histories and why they feel that way. We break it down in a one on one conference if needed and I try to discover the cause with them. We write goals for the year to change things up. #masterychat
A2: I think one adversary to reading engagement is that we too often shy away from “The Struggle” and want to move along quickly & give students the INFORMATION rather than provide them with the TOOLS to overcome the struggle & become more confident readers. #MasteryChat
A3. Sometimes working with someone 1:1 in reading, a mentor, or a teacher, Spending some extra time to sit and work with a S having difficulty, can help out! Finding materials that interest them, encouraging them, asking questions. #masterychat
A3 First look to their interest, find books they can relate to, and make sure they are getting books that are a good fit. I also get involved and have book clubs with these Ss. We have our High School kids coming to mentor and they will be in book clubs as well. #masterychat
A3 #masterychat#celebratED I think as a teacher you owe them the effort to find what drives them. Maybe chunking it up and having them draw the main idea as a comic, maybe reading the same book over and over for gain confidence and fluency. We just need to use all our tools!
A4: Digital reader responses, audiobooks, tumble readers, student to student book interviews, creating videos/stop-motion/storyboards. So many fun options!!! #masterychat
A4 - I love attaching little tidbits into google docs, video directions or even having students read and do a Flipgrid on what they have learned. #MasteryChat
A2 there are so many ways to keep ss engaged traditional ways of acting out a scene stop at a pivotal point use voice inflection use booksnaps or shared docs answer questions on a @padlet make predictions or talk about character traits on @Flipgrid#MasteryChat
A4: I mentioned using @EpicKidsBooks, but my Ss create their own books using @BookCreatorApp too. With Epic, I create collections of books related to the current content and share them with Ss. #MasteryChat
A4: I love to use the read and write tool for my students and the ability to use resources in @DiscoveryEd as well as google tops to pair with images with the ability to comment, highlight and annotate. #masterychat#risdconnects
A4: I use slideshows for visualization and I am addicted to @Flipgrid for student responses to what they are reading. Ss use Google Classroom to stop and jot. Also, I been doing some research on #booksnaps which I would like to use as well. #masterychat
A3- My son was diagnosed with Dyslexic in 5th grade and it was like pulling teeth to get him to read. We started listening to books on audible and now he listens to all his books! Love Learning Ally and Voice Dream for struggling readers. #masterychat
A3 Many of my math Ss feel bad at reading. This causes problems w/understanding complex problems in real world applications.
Often, they shut down before they even start. Getting them to take that first step with OODLES of encouragement is key!
#masterychat
A3: Ss choice in reading material helps to encourage reading. I really like conferencing w/ Ss & using a repeated reading strategy to help build their confidence as readers. When I'm reading w/ a S, they can’t “fail” b/c I'm right there to aid w/ challenging words #MasteryChat
A4: You know, there’s actually a lot of value to paper/pencil/highlighter reading. I like the Smart Board for projecting and highlighting important parts for full group, but I also don’t think reading instruction HAS to be teched out to be effective. #MasteryChat
A4: Using Ipods/other tech for audio versions; using the projector to freeze a certain portion to make sense of it; allowing students to take pictures of pages so they don't have to lug big text books home. #masterychat
Matching books and kids is an underrated skill that takes a lot of practice + relationship building. It's all worth it to see a student matched up with a book that might change their life. Books have definitely changed my life + I have some great teachers to thank! #MasteryChat
A3 sometimes kids just haven’t met the right book yet or have been restricted to a level. I’ve had a lot of luck using student lead book clubs and to show them that books connect people and having a shared experience makes the story even more magical #masterychat
While they're listening they're hearing fluent readers read, so they're still gleaning something. Our 'good' readers shouldn't be expected to achieve at high levels at every moment. It's okay to just listen at times. #MasteryChat
A4 #masterychat#celebratED this one is one I'm still growing on. Use online read aloud for those super low babies or EL, have the student video themselves reading and then watch, and create a trailer for the book to share their love and encourage others to read it.
A4 I have attempted to go paperless in history this year! All primary reading sources are on the chromebook (we are 1:1) . I can add links on all reading sources to take my kiddos to other sites/videos connecting to that particular reading! #Masterychat
A5: With narratives, sometimes I ask them to produce a 12 panel storyboard cartoon to highlight the most important story beats. I did this with Shakespeare’s Ages of Man speech so that they had to include all details for each--requires serious decoding! #MasteryChat
A4: Ss use Google classroom to create an online ongoing notebook, the Ss create book talks on @Flipgrid and use @Flocabulary for some great videos to support reading. #MasteryChat
A4: I am actually having my students publish a book this year. It is through @scholastic, and I am excited for them to create a piece of writing and realize the work that goes into it. #masterychat
A3: I try to chat with my students and explain to them why it’s important to read. I like to learn about about their interests and try to find a good fit for them. I tell my students if they don’t like to read, they haven’t found the right book! 😬#masterychat
Lots of independent reading on devices with Benchmark Universe and Epic. The "Read to Me" option is great for our littlest ones! #booksforall#MasteryChat
A5 - Ss create propaganda posters, fan-club websites, simple “Tweets” of 140 charcters of what they’ve learned. Also, S have used @flipgrid to do book talk/text reflections. #masterychat
Q4: I love storyline online and books that have been put onto YouTube in cartoon form or are animated. I’ll have the concrete book in the room but I think it helps kids see that reading is simply bringing words to life #MasteryChat
A3: I work to find an interest level. I also work to use audio text. Getting past the stigma that reading must be done with your eyes. We all read and all types of reading must be allowed. #masterychat
A4– Recently I have been using @Flipgrid as a way for students to share their reading, reflections and book recommendations to each other! They love getting to create a video of themselves and hearing about books from their peers. #FlipGrid#MasteryChat
A3: I work to match Ss with books and encourage them to stop books they don’t like. I sometimes will read the opening of the book aloud with them to see if there’s interest. We provide daily class time & encourage rereadings of favorites #Masterychat
A4: We will use the iPads w/ some Ss to aid their reading. Apps like RazKids and BookFlix are engaging and help the Ss follow the text as they listen. #MasteryChat
#masterychat - A4 - When asking open ended math questions I like to ask them using @goformative or Google Forms. That way we can view the responses anonymously as a class together and look for common misunderstandings
A4: Creating social media feeds (Snapchat and Instagram using AR has been fun for characterization), creating slam poetry versions of classic texts and recording it, etc. #MasteryChat
LOVE student Publishing. Why just publish in your room? Or in your School? Or in your Community? Love how @teacherslearn2 implements publishing his students books on Amazon #SquadGoals#masterychat#Teachergoals
A1 We get “comfy” (kids are at tables, on the floor, we even read outside). We discuss instead of quizzes, questions lists, tests. We let the authors message affect us & inspire our next steps. If you want to get students to love reading: https://t.co/RAXNWFzvgA#masterychat
A4. You can do booktrailers, booksnaps with the Ss after they have read the book. Writing a summary of book in the trailer to introduce it to others and publish or reviewing books and sharing with others in booksnaps! #masterychat
A4 I have been using @Newsela. It allows my Ss to read current event articles at 5 different reading levels, contains quizzes, and a writing prompt. The data from the program helps me monitor my students’ reading growth. #masterychat
A4: Just shared the "BookaKucha" idea (based on Pekakucha) from #Eduprotocols with the teachers I serve. Love this straightforward approach to building a culture of reading. #ditchbook
A4: If they're reading on their device, they can open my docs in apps that allow them to highlight keywords and write on the doc. Every year, I hear of a new app/program they've learned of to open/manipulate docs #masterychat
A3 use books on line @audible_com find what they are interested in reading chunk the assignment into small manageable parts let them choose what they read and don't forget about nonfiction some students prefer how to books over Mysteries I was one of those students #MasteryChat
A4 I enjoy Newsela and so many others. My 6th gr kids love Scholastic Junior, and I have used the storylineonline site for jumping off points in mini lessons.#MasteryChat
Awesome! What age do you work with, Todd?
Curious- do any of them resist the cartoon, believing themselves to be poor artists? (I have had students respond this way to my similar attempts.)
How do you counter that? #MasteryChat
A4: I LOVE @Newsela and News in Levels & online #ScholasticAction Magazine for my ELs. Our struggling reading love when the text is read aloud to them. They stay focused and learn #masterychat
Oops, I kind of answered that in #3 but I will add to it. My kids read a couple of pages to @Flipgrid and add their connections, favourite parts or book recommendations 💚😀 #masterychat
A4- we are 1:1 chromebooks and all classrooms have smart boards so most everything we do with reading is done using technology. I also use the doc camera to read books to kids or share reading resources #masterychat
A4) I'm a principal... Implemented Applied Digital Skills and Modern Communications so students are producing instead of just consuming information. To gather information and then make a product makes it meaningful
#MasteryChat
A2 I let them guide our discussions. I need them to know what they think and what their peers think, not what I think. That’s only when it happens naturally or when asked. The book was for them; not for them through me. #masterychat
A4: I use my 30 Second Pitch... students pitch me their idea on how to embed tech into all learning all day! Reading is day long learning for us... it’s just a matter of how they want to do it! #MasteryChat#Nan3EDUhttps://t.co/UGJmfq2vJu
A4: In every way possible!! We teach the YouTube generation. Let’s meet them where they are. There are a million and one apps that can be used to teach the love of reading... & the love for the magic place that is ... #MasteryChat
A5 #masterychat#celebratED make a comic book version. We also have several samples of ways to map out their reading and take notes. I've been wanting to do a mock news report using the books character as the news story.
A5: Let students choose how they will demonstrate their knowledge in creative ways: play, song, stoaryboard, comic, dance, re-write the ending, “interview” the author or characters, role-play, create a model, etc. #masterychat
Currently, my Ss are gathering research using @padlet and creating nonfiction books with their research using Google Slides or @HaikuDeck. #MasteryChat
A5: I use @Flipgrid and @Seesaw . Students create reading response and book recommendation videos. We use the @goPEEQ ball to answer questions about our reading. #masterychat
A3. Students get a lot readerly rules in school, but not enough space to build readerly lives: give them the gift of time + the right to stop, to change books, to take what they need + leave what they don't. I wrote about this recently! #MasteryChathttps://t.co/CU4XBwxM7B
A5: Book talks with @Flipgrid. Give Ss choice. Ss can create lyrics for a song and sing it, create a sales pitch for their book, perform a play, rewrite the ending or the beginning. Tons of choices. #MasteryChat
A5: The most common way is I have Ss responses on @Flipgrid. They love using flipgrid so much that they can’t wait to share what they read. This has the best results. #masterychat
A3 We destroy their love of reading. Which would you prefer: a book club experience or what we traditionally do with literature in class? It doesn’t have to be this way but we’ve created this “teaching reading” norm. We can change it, too. #masterychat
A4: My favorite way is to have text within @GoogleForEdu slideshows. I assign the slideshow from Google classroom. Ss read the text, engaging with it through selecting a word, phrase, etc. and creating comments. #masterychat
FIRST TIMER! I love when we have first timers here in #MasteryChat. :)
I can't believe I missed the opportunity to welcome you at the very start of the chat!
Thanks for being here!
A5: I make them the teachers- by doing a "Why Do We Read?" project for my units on "The Kite Runner" and "Hamlet" every year. I'm always blown away by their projects. It's pretty open ended but the experiences they create for this question teach more than I could do. #MasteryChat
I am incredibly grateful for @MrsHankinsClass. She is doing a phenomenal job tonight and is just one of the most genuine and kind- hearted educators I have ever met. #masterychat
A6: Seriously? I don’t even know where to start. Most of my really important ones are unrelated to academics per se. I prefer it that way. Kids starting to believe in themselves are the big wins. #MasteryChat
Q4 For our staff book study Ts used @Flipgrid to respond and I have been using different video editors to make quick book talks prior to my read aloud. #masterychat
A3 #MasteryChat Read to them, suggest audiobooks, find topics of interest. Remember not every Ss loves fiction. If they love sports, connect them with biographies of athletes. If they love animals, there are some excellent non-fiction series that are engaging & informative
A5: we always make an art project based on a book we’ve read, noting how we can take the words/story and depict it visually. Sometimes making puppets are fun, even if just on a popsicle stick, and the kids re-act out the story or make their own with the characters #MasteryChat
A6: This year, a new student told me: “I can’t read. I can’t write.”
I put a book in front of him called “At the Park”. He read AND comprehended it. With my help, he then wrote a sentence: “I luv basbol.”
I said, “You are a reader. You are a writer.” He smiled.
#MasteryChat
A4 I use @Flipgrid for practicing fluency and for responding to their reading. Epic for them to listen, Google Classroom for responding or working, and they will be starting to work on Book Creator to create their own books. #masterychat
A5: There are so many ways to let students show what they've learned...the best thing is for them to know that they're reading for FUN and sharing or recommending a book is just a great way to encourage others to read and learn #masterychat
A5: I always use this example (but it’s so good!), but for my Breaking Enigma lesson, Ss used what they read to teach their groups how to go about breaking the code and later needed information from reading to crack the encryption #MasteryChat
A5: I think letting them find a way to share whether it is bu making something or creating a song or even bringing you book they are reading that they used a skill or strategy you have taught! #masterychat
I model it first with a sneak peak at my own horrible artwork. Stick figures are FINE. Sometimes they score better than the artists' because they satisfy the rubric instead of focusing on the aesthetics. #masterychat
I love how publishing intros audience & makes writing authentic. In the past I’ve partnered w/ the school Librarian to create a S published shelf. All S books are catalogued & barcoded “Just like real authors!” Ss can sign-out S books just as they would any other. #MasteryChat
A5 I often have my ELs record videos on @Flipgrid to discuss what they read. This may be a summary, interpretation, or application of knowledge acquired. #masterychat
A5: Love using #sketchnoting during and after readings! I find that’s it’s easier to remember/show information when I have a drawing associated with it. #masterychat#sketchnote
A5 - Deep questioning. Make comprehension and understanding the goals not just retention of the “what” but the why and “what if’s” of texts. #masterychat
A6: My favorite reading moment is when one of my ELL students was able to read an entire sentence perfectly and we celebrated. He lit up when he score high on his test that was in ENGLISH!!! #masterychat#risdconnects
A4 - We have programs like Snap and Read which allows anything digital to be read. Many students use this tool just because it is how they like to read. Podcasting their fav childhood book. I require multiple voices. It’s tons of fun! #MasteryChat
A5 after we read for book club ss create a project to inspire others to read that book. I love when they present and then the whole class is excited to read the book next #MasteryChat
I like to use technology to teach great resarching skills when reading online materials- you can't believe everything you read online. We look for biases, misinformation, etc. #masterychat
A4 #MasteryChat I am a huge fan of audiobooks as they help Ss visualize a story as it unfolds. I also ❤️ tech for representing connections & understanding (ie. book commercials, #BookSnaps, #bookbentos)
#masterychat - A5 - Having choice in how to show understanding is important. Have them do a green screen video, create a @StoryboardThat, or show their learning by teaching the class through a @Screencastify
A5: I plan on using @flipgrid to document which books the students are liking. My students love to read, and once they start reading, they do not want to stop. I have fun friday where I turn off the lights and project a fireplace on the screen. #masterychat
A6: Fave moment is when they relate it to something or someone in their own lives...it shows me they are making connections and thinking at a deeper level #MasteryChat
A6: My favorite reading moment is when one of my ELL students was able to read an entire sentence perfectly and we celebrated. He lit up when he score high on his test that was in ENGLISH!!! #masterychat#risdconnects
A5- my photography class is creating YouTube videos on what they are learning from vintage camera technical manuals and will demonstrate how to use the cameras #masterychat
A6: I had a student who hated reading, but I discovered he hadn't connected with a series yet. He reluctantly tried Magic Tree House and it blew him away. He finished the first 30 books in about two months! #MasteryChat
A5 We Make comics, character trading cards, Create a Buncee to illustrate their learning, book trailers or recommendations in Flipgrid, or they build show animation clips. They sketch in Draw and Tell #masterychat
A6 - In my 1st year of teaching, I had a S who said that they “sucked at reading.” He repeated this phrase in his own “self-defeat.” I required him to declare enthusiastically “I am a good reader!” as he entered my class. He emailed me when he graduated thanking me. #masterychat
A6 When an ELL read his first book in English with me! He worked so hard for months and went from knowing no English to reading! The joy and pride on his face is something I will never forget and a reason I want to be a teacher. I want to give that to more students. #masterychat
A5. Design or make a character they read about and describe a small biography about them. Dress up and portray a character in a book and talk or act out a skit in the book. Make a video about the book! #masterychat
A4 I include technology when we work with texts in stations & when we create based on our reactions and reflections. We made these for our building after reading and discussing Antigone, a 2,400 year old Greek play. Thank you, Collab Screens! https://t.co/0TDExCKW3B#masterychat
A6: Last year, I had a level 1 ELL finally open up in my class when I told her that the C-based coding language was new to everyone. By the end of the semester, she was one of the best programmers in the class. #masterychat
A6 My students acted out a book/play and it was great to see how some of my more timid Ss really came out of their shells once they got comfortable with the dialogue #masterychat
I'm loving this chat! Fast and furious with it all as always and sorry late to introductions--- Lissa from CA, I teach AP Literature and my students amaze me every single day! and we read A LOT. #masterychat
A5) Create a script and use our green screen to put yourself "on location" on whatever the topic is.
Stop motion animation to tell the story with Legos.
#MasteryChat
A6 I love that they beg me to read aloud! I have been known to give the characters their own “voice” so the ss listen in complete silence and enjoy the story. #MasteryChat
A6 I work with 1st graders, so my favorite reading moment is when a S reads a book by themself for the 1st time. Their excitement is contagious #MasteryChat
A6: Reading my childhood favorites as the class book and having Ss cry and hug me, rather than judge me, when I cried while reading the end. Bridge to Terabithia...does it every time. #masterychat
A6 My favorite moment was when a child started connecting the pieces and was able to read an entire book to me. Then later that night, the mom emailed to shared that he read to her for the 1st time. #Slammedthatdooropen#masterychat
A6: I think it has been seeing a student who a parent said was a "struggling reader" who by the end of the year was able to confidently tackle texts. #masterychat
A6: My washer recently broke. The repairman told me that I was the reason his son loves 2 read. He's now graduating high school & still loves 2 read. He stopped by the next day w/the entire series of books I introduced him to 4 my class #MasteryChat#tears#hearthappy#reading
A5 I have had students create a meme poster for their book, create board games for books, create book talk slideshows, choose a character and write an additional chapter from that viewpoint, and many more. #MasteryChat
A6 This year my goal has been to have more diverse books in my Principal library and seeing Ss come in and get excited about my selection is so awesome. #masterychat
A7: Depends on the level and setting, but The Bible, Complete Works of Shakespeare, or Freedom Writers would have to be way up there for very different reasons. #MasteryChat
A5: My kids have used @Flipgrid and @Buncee to show what they know after they read. Both tools are engaging and I'm able to get a good handle on what they've read when they're allowed to be creative. Read about both here: https://t.co/V5LetViu6x#MasteryChat
A6 - Helping students break apart science word problems and scenarios was always my favorite. Finding the pieces to get what we need to find a solution! #masterychat
A6 When they tell me I achieved one of my yearly goals: “Ok, you’re right, I like this one.” Or when they ask if we can read. Or when they ask if we can read required novels from pervious years together. #masterychat
Listening to a student confidently read aloud at the end of the school year... when they struggled only months before. They know I will never give up on them or leave them behind! #MasteryChat
A6) this year a group chose "the history of Netflix" as a mini project. They learned Netflix used to send DISCS by SNAIL MAIL.
That was really cool that they learned something unexpected and also I'm old. #bekindrewind old.
#MasteryChat
Super bummed that I missed #MasteryChat because @MrsHankinsClass rocks! But super excited that I’ve got #GeniusPD on the calendar soon so I can read through all the tweets! Wendy, you are truly amazing! Can I come be a student in your classroom? I’ll bring my own pirate costume!
A7 - My favorite scientific book was always Darwin’s On The Origin of Species. It would be a stretch but you could in theory teach an entire biology course from it’s contents. #masterychat
A6 #masterychat I've had several but it never gets old if I stop reading and they start moaning and get upset that I stopped the read aloud. I love that.
A7: “Oh the places you’ll go” would be my go to book in any classroom or office. Every individual needs to be aware of what they’re capable of. Doesn’t matter the skill of reader ❤️#masterychat#risdconnects
A5: So many options! Journals, sketches, posters, discussions, gallery walks, @Flipgrid, multimodal presentations, literature circles, research, Google classroom, opinions/persuasive arguments, letters, create a video, write their own book...
You get the idea... 😉 #masterychat
Nice! What an interesting opportunity for them to shine!
I, also, have been known to draw some atrocious stick figures myself... Here is one of me trying to explain what x and y intercepts were with a reference to interceptions in football games...
#masteryChat
A7 - “Brian’s Winter” by Gary Paulsen. I struggled to find a book that I liked throughout my late elementary, early MS years until a T suggested I try this book. I read it in a single day at school and haven’t put books down since. #masterychat
I've published six literary magazines with @Skyline_WC + my Humanities students published a book about the hidden + contested histories of our town last year + it's a new experience for them to write *for* external readers by thinking *as* readers. Good luck! #MasteryChat
In reply to
@MsJachymiak, @Scholastic, @Skyline_WC
A7: This is a hard question. I would say "Wonder" because it emphasizes choosing kind, and I feel like kindness transcends everything else. #masterychat
A6: When their eyes light up... the 💡 lightbulb moment of finding their passion... is it a mystery? Humor? Gathering facts through a @Scholastic news that moment is PRICELESS #MasteryChat#Nan3EDU
A6 #MasteryChat So many moments, but most recent is 1 of my previous Ss is reading the same book as I am & giving me updates not spoilers. There is a really sad part in it that I need to prepare myself for. ❤️ that he cares enough to do that!
A7: I LOVE "Mercedes And The Chocolate Pilot" it tells a powerful story and helps teach students about an often times overlooked historical event. #masterychat
A6: I think it would have to be the student who would only read comic books. Getting him to read graphic novels led to trying other books, which in turn changed His view point on reading. It made me love what I do even more. #masterychat
A 6.2 My other favorite moment was when a child made the connection after reading the title "Good Times" on a passage. She says, "Mrs. D, I really like the show and watch it sometimes, but I don't think I know enough about it to pass." LOL #masterychat
A7: oh my gosh so hard.....Hooway for Wodney Wat! So many things you can do with the book and students love the underdog that saves the day from the bully #masterychat
A6 Students essays are whatever they learned from the book, the theme which reached them. They can also choose to make a presentation, a creative project, etc. We don’t have tests or quizzes, so their discussions, annotations, even a quick chat with me works! #masterychat
A6: 2 yrs ago I read the classic "Cheaper By the Dozen" to my #3rdgrade class. I got all choked up when I had to read about the dad dying in the end. We had grown to love Mr. Gilbreth with all of his eccentricities. #masterychathttps://t.co/kuZUWdTtYt
#MasteryChat - A6 - I’ll always look back at reading Sir Cumference and the Knights of the Round Table on Pi Day with my class in a bad Monty Python impression.
A7) as a former science teacher- A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson. I used to read aloud or assign passages to students. It's so engaging.
#MasteryChat
@raehughart would love this! She deliberately plans out how she will bring "soft skills" meaningfully into every #teachfurther unit she does!
Tell her about Tobin's Pizza, Rae!
#MasteryChat
A6 Not sure this is best of all time, but today a 6th gr. left his book in my classroom again. When I told him that I would just have to take it home to read it, he said, "YES! You need to!" He has told me daily how much I need to read the book. 😁 #MasteryChat
A6. When a S , who was previously struggling in reading, came into library to check out books that he found interesting. He was working 1;1 with a T, just excited to keep reading! It was wonderful to see him smile about reading! #masterychat
I treat each day as a massive book club: individual, small group, then their curated discussions become our class discussions. So easy and so impactful: https://t.co/RAXNWFzvgA#masterychat
A6: This yr. I had a 4th grader who has an eye reading level of D was able to make a connection between a book he ear read that was grade level for 4th and a book we were currently reading. Just becasue Ss have dyslexia doesn't mean they can't understand. #masterychat
Just had another thought! We should set up Book speed dating for educators during PD! Get a whole bunch of awesome education books and then speed date them. Common interests could form into book studies for the year!
We should do this on November 26th, @ItsAMrY! #masterychat
Q: Students read books, math problems, science data, and more...how do you “hook” kids in what they're reading?
I give them something they can feel. I use manipulatives for science texts. #MasteryChat
A7 All I would need is Dr. Seuss' French Dictionary: it's chock full of easy to grasp vocabulary and, of course, Seuss shows you how to use each word - any student who picks it up during our weekly reading time will definitely not put it down #masterychat
A7: Only ONE BOOK you ask? Oh wow... The Giving Tree is one that speaks to my soul... once you read it life just changes before you! #MasteryChat#Nan3EDU
A7: "Les Miserables" has a special place in my AP Lit classroom every year-- as Victor Hugo said "Wherever men go in despair, wherever children lack a book to learn from or a warm bed, Les Miserables knocks at the doors and says: -Open up, I am here for you.” #MasteryChat
Hands down my favorite experience was when a student who had been using a feature on @Buncee that allows text to be 'read' aloud used his own voice and read to his classmates one day. It was a great stride for him and his peers were patient and supportive. #MasteryChat
A7: Trick question! I’m going with a MacBook, because then we can access the internet, which means we can access almost anything 😉 #Masterychat#cheating
A7: only 1!!! 😬 oh that’s a painfully tough question...hmm if it was my own it would be “the courage to teach” by Parker Palmer. If for the kids, “maybe something, beautiful” #MasteryChat
A7 The Energy Bus by @JonGordon11 It has so many life lessons for any age. I absolutely love both the adult and kid's version of this book! #masterychat
A7 Not a Fair question because there are thousands I love! However, Hatchet was the book that hooked me and the series helped me become the reader I am today. #masterychat
A7 The Outsiders by @se4realhinton. It was the first book I read from start to finish in one sitting. I couldn’t put it down. I keep it and share it with my ELs to remind me/them that we can overcome difficulties in reading. #masterychat
YES - Soft Skills must be a cohesive and deliberate blend in our lessons! Love this! Tomorrow our students are hosting a POP Up Restaurant in our math Class to implement and apply math skills with other valuable social skills. Its all connected! #masterychat
A5 SLAP THE DOOR! Such a fun way for the kids to show what they know. Typical exit slip on a sticky note but on the way out of class they slap the note on the door! #masterychat
A7: A book we created together. Lots of auccess with that in the past! It brings a lot of pride; this, becomes a real motivator. @WriteBrainBooks are great for individual book creations; the students actually become the authors! #masterychat
A Gr 1 Ss idea started the whole thing! “Can we publish our books to the library like real authors?” YES! Ss decided if they had a book ready to be published. The librarian printed the barcodes & entered the books in the system. Not there yet this year, but soon #MasteryChat
A6: A kindergarten student put down his tablet to listen intently to the book I was reading aloud. He was enthralled and hung on every word from cover to cover.
The power of a good book, my friends. 💙 #MasteryChat
Not sure why this popped up first but I always liked the short story, Waters of Gold by Laurence Yep. Lots of imagery. Lots of symbolism and authors craft for middle school. #masterychat
A6 answer 2: one of my ELLs comes into my room daily asking if we can read more of Sender Unknown because he wants to know what's happening with Paul and Elflet. 😂😁 #MasteryChat
True. Time seems to be a constant conundrum for creating these amazing learning experiences that we want to for students.
Any ideas for how we as educators/leaders can make that time exist? How do we give it space to flourish? #MasteryChat
A7- one?! (Gasp!) A Week in the Woods by Andrew Clements-new kid trying to figure out how to fit in in a new environment. We all are the new kid at some point #masterychat
A4: We are transitioning to a BYD with cell phones for instructional use in the classroom. I am looking most forward to encouraging quick annotations & highlighting passages to peer-share with #BookSnaps . #masterychat
Q1: Students read books, math problems, science data, and more... how do you “hook” kids in what they're reading?
I use manipulatives for science texts. #MasteryChat
We do not live in an isolated world - so, why teach content this way? Utilize #interdisiplinary#PBL Techniques to build purposeful units for students to thrive #masterychat
@raehughart would love this! She deliberately plans out how she will bring "soft skills" meaningfully into every #teachfurther unit she does!
Tell her about Tobin's Pizza, Rae!
#MasteryChat
Bonus: I think the library....many different books some sorted by level. Some sorted by type of book, or topic or series. A soft place to sit and enjoy books with each other #masterychat
We do not live in an isolated world - so, why teach content this way? Utilize #interdisciplinary#PBL Techniques to build purposeful units for students to thrive #masterychat
Just had another thought! We should set up Book speed dating for educators during PD! Get a whole bunch of awesome education books and then speed date them. Common interests could form into book studies for the year!
We should do this on November 26th, @ItsAMrY! #masterychat
A7 UGH! Why did you have to give us such a hard question, @MrsHankinsClass!
Can I cheat and say a CHROMEbook so I can access thousands of online texts? :)
#masterychat
A6- I have a Ss working on fluency. She has passages to read each night to an adult. Her mom was working late, so she recorded herself reading and brought it to school the next day. She said “Ms. Andrews, look because of you I’m a reader. I knew you would be proud!” #MasteryChat
A6. One of the best parts of teaching my Humanities course is watching students use their agency to make meaning from texts independently. Students just closely interrogated Paris is Burning to examine identity for #LGBTQ History month + made videos about it. #MasteryChat
A7: If i coułd only have one book in my classroom, it’ll be ‘My Shoes and I’ by @renecolato
It tells the story of so many of my students coming from Central America and myself 🤷🏽♀️
#masteryChat
BONUS this is my reading corner in the back of my classroom! Each bin is filled with all different books the kids can choose whenever they’d life! Often the kids will read there, work there, or even just talk in the mornings there❤️ #masterychat
Thank you @MrsHankinsClass for such a phenomenal chat. I am so lucky to have this PLN who supports me 110 percent of the way and welcomes me in as a 1st year teacher. #masterychat
A7. As a former middle school teacher I always liked the short story, Waters of Gold by Laurence Yep. Loved the symbolism. A short story full of authors craft! #masterychat
I wish I had a better pic of my shelves that are jammed packed full of books that are not so jammed packed because they are being checked out by my students! #masterychat
Bonus - the kids read wherever they are comfortable, in their chairs, on the floor, or in the offer (a small room with one table and a few chairs) #masterychat
BQ/ we have spots throughout our entire building. Every classroom, our amazing library, our halls, and any book we can utilize. This year we have stationary reading bikes and they have been a huge hit! #masterychat
A7 anyone at HS level have welcoming reading spots? I am wrestling with how to create this in my Spanish class. Other bulky items preventing me from flexibility #masterychat
#masterychat When it comes to reading I love the advice fro. @LewisHowes@RyanHoliday in terms of just trying different reads our students anxiety increases as they look at a huge task like a long CO OP placement, big goal or book. Given permission to try many & stick with some
Bonus: I don't have an "inviting place" for students to read; however, I have a diverse classroom bookshelf with a ton of books that represent my students' culture and language. THIS is a great way to encourage reading for all students #masterychat
Bonus: I got a subscription to Sports Illustrated for kids. I keep a stack in my class and the Ss read them during Advisory time or when they have some free time. It has created some interesting conversations. #masterychat
It's awesome to see you giving students space to practice + receive formative feedback on "soft skills" in an authentic + meaningful context. #MasteryChat

We created a for the love of reading series where we record teachers reading their favorite book so families can watch and listen to the story in t.f he comfort of their own home. #masterychathttps://t.co/mDc3rMQjCM
A7: If I could have only one book in my classroom it would be The Wild Robot by @itspeterbrown This story has gotten even my most reluctant readers interested and contains so many great lessons about our world #MasteryChat#WeLoveRoz
A1: In order to hook kids into reading, we've got to #makeitmatter. Some say it's most important to show relevancy & purpose to younger students, but I've found my high school students seem to even need it more. We've got to turn the "So What?!" into "That's Why!" #masterychat
If you don't already follow the awesome @teresagross625 and @Toppel_ELD do so RIGHT NOW! These ladies are master teachers of reading! Thank you, ladies for inspiring me and our #PLN to be passionate readers #masterychat
It really is! Our 3-5 grade classes read it and then saw the play at a children's theater. While we were reading, one of my students shared that they also have dyslexia. They were able to connect to a character in a book and it was SO impactful. #masterychat
A7: There's no way I can pick just one!!! But here are some of my favorites. I love books that inspire confidence, understanding, and empathy. #MasteryChat
She would be very modest, but my go to is @ErikaChacra Her patience, passion, and willingness to help. Also @crystal_midlik because she's always willing to share ideas and helped me get stared on my 4th grade journey. #masterychat
Thank you Wendy @MrsHankinsClass for such great questions. So many wondful ideas from this chat tonight. Will have to go back and read what I missed. #masterychat
What a masterful chat! So happy to be an official part of the #MasteryChat family. Thanks to @TechieTeachOtt for the invite!
Remember to join the conversation next Thursday, November 8th at 7:00pm CST.
B/Q: This was very reflective for me. I’ve realized that I need to integrate more reading into my instruction. My classroom is a computer lab in which I have 32 devices that can serve as amazing reading resources that I’ve left fairly untapped. That’ll change. #masterychat
A3: Never underestimate the magical power of reading aloud to our reluctant or struggling Ss. As much as they try, they can't resist it a great story, especially one read w/enthusiasm! Don't beat the book/poem/story; just read w/joy. Build from there! #masterychat#readersforreal
A7 I Wish You More. It was gifted to me by @MrLibrerosClass and @missrdgzem and I’ve already purchased many copies for friends. It makes me smile! #masterychat
A7: I wouldn't say that I couldn't live w/o this one, but a favorite for the beginning of #3rdgrade is "Howliday Inn" by James Howe. It has loads of story elements, and is a fun mystery. Also, the character dev is fun. Check out audio book.
