  • MsDragoo Nov 1 @ 8:09 PM EDT
A1: I hook my students to read by first hooking them to the TOPIC they are reading about! It helps when we are learning about different events in history to give them a question or a piece of info that they would want to explore #masterychat #risdconnects @RISDTnLSS
  • StephDill92 Nov 1 @ 8:09 PM EDT
A1: for reading I really work to give my Ss a choice in what we read - I do the reading while they are ear reading. We stop as needed to talk about what is going on. Their pick makes it an easy "hook". #masterychat

Q2: What is one way you can keep kids engaged in reading, whether it be while they are being read to or in what they’re reading? #MasteryChat
  • Jennifer_Manly Nov 1 @ 8:10 PM EDT
A1: Make sure they know the answer to both "why should I care" and "how do I know you (the teacher) care?" Whatever they're reading has to have a purpose. It's really easy to skim over/not do the reading when the why is not clear. #masterychat

  • MissKRafferty Nov 1 @ 8:10 PM EDT
A1: I give them a lot of choice in what they read. I also model what being 'hooked' on a book looks like. I read to them with enthusiasm and passion. I laugh out loud and cry at the sad parts. I talk about how the book reminds me of my life. #MasteryChat
  • AlyseConsiglio Nov 1 @ 8:10 PM EDT
A1: Make it purposeful. It's important to them inherently OR devise a reason other than "the grade" or "the test" to make it purposeful. #masterychat

  • Shapiro_WTHS Nov 1 @ 8:10 PM EDT
A1 - I’ve found that “hooking” students on reading starts with our own love of reading. We always pick books or topics that relate to what their interests are. #masterychat

  • awiesnergroff Nov 1 @ 8:10 PM EDT
A1: Since I am the “overly excited about the book we will be reading and probably take it too far” type person, I usually garner pretty decent motivation. Finding ways to make sure the books are relevant to students. Allowing students to have choice. #MasteryChat
  • drmollyness Nov 1 @ 8:11 PM EDT

  • BethHajder Nov 1 @ 8:11 PM EDT
A1 Lots of choices. I try to help them find a genre or author that they love, then go from there. Read Alouds also are a great way to hook them. #MasteryChat
  • Blended_Math Nov 1 @ 8:11 PM EDT
#masterychat - A1 -one of my favorite teaching moments was when a student was moving away, and his last wish was for me to read picture books for the class in funny accents like I do with my daughter. This started a semi regular math book/funny accent read aloud in 7th grade math
