Hello, #122EdChat!! I’m Anna from San Diego where I teach some outstanding English 11 and AVID 11 students! I am most excited to rejuvenate and recharge this summer, so that I can be a revived teacher for my new 2018-2019 kiddos!
Welcome to #122edchat! I am Tiffany Ott and I LOVE this group of awesome educators! Check in and tell us where you are from, what you teach, and give us a preview of what you are most excited for this summer!
A1: I think assessment is a useful tool for providing feedback but can result in high stress and anxiety in our students if not presented in the right way. #122edchat
A1) I think Assessment is useful as long as it comes with reflection. As long as you are open to understanding ways to change, and able to then process and incorporate into your daily routine then it can change your world #122edchat
Q1: Assessment is a significant part of our world in modern education. Some think of it as a powerful tool for improving teaching and learning. Others believe it is a distraction from learning and harmful for students. What are your thoughts and why? #122edchat
A1: I'm a SPED T and assessment is a big part of my life. I love what I do for assessments 1 on 1 with Ss. I learn so much and get a better picture into their thinking. I really dislike the one size fits all state testing! #122edchat
A1: It really depends on how the information is used. If it is used to mold, shape, and drive instruction, then good. However, too often it is used as an "all-or-nothing" event that can be put in a gradebook. #122edchat
A1: There needs to be a balance. Tests are a reality, but when we are just trying to "get through" testing, it is time to take a look at the impact on the kids. #122edchat
Q1: Assessment is a significant part of our world in modern education. Some think of it as a powerful tool for improving teaching and learning. Others believe it is a distraction from learning and harmful for students. What are your thoughts and why? #122edchat
A1: It all depends on the type of assessment and the purpose of it. Assessment can be both powerful and destructive, you have to use it purposefully and positively. #122edchat
A1 Assessment used to help Ss (#formativeassessment) are a positive Assessment to gather data to compare schools across an area, or to justify funding is a waste of Ss time #122edchat
A1 Assessment is powerful, meaningful, insightful, & so beneficial to the learning experience. BUT if it is improperly used, it is a waste. Too often Ts assess, but don't use results to guide instructions. Or, districts require us to assess w/o meaning. #AssessBetter! #122edchat
A1: I think there's a happy medium we need to find! Assessment is really great for feedback but we can't put all our eggs in one basket and put all the pressure on an assessment. #122edchat
A1: assessment can be useful when you use the information to drive your instruction. Assessment is not meant to be a check in the box. Timely feedback should be provided and decisions ahould@be made that will help Ss grow. #122EdChat#LoveLiteracyLearning
A1: All things in moderatoin. Assessment absolutely has a place, we need to be able to see where students are. However, having kids sit for four hours multiple days testing.... Seems like overkill #AmIRight? #122edchat
A1. I’m not in the classroom using it every day like most of you. Im always open to using what’s best for kids. Not sure i have the experience to weigh in #122edchat
A1 I think Assessment is a powerful tool for analyzing a students learning and figuring out next steps. That being said I would love it marks reflected individual student growth #122edchat
A1 Not all assessments are created equal. Assessment FOR learning can be a beneficial check learning, and allow for feedback and growth. Assessment OF learning is at the end, when a determination of mastery is needed. #122edchat
A1 I believe it can be both, when assessment is done correctly & purposefully, not just to meet content standards but as a feedback tool then it can be very powerful.
Assessment only becomes a distraction when you're doing it too many times without making any changes #122edchat
Hello! Chad Ostrowski here, from Canton, OH. I work with teachers, schools and district sharing @thegridmethod and so much more to help them reach more students! STOKED that the amazing @TechieTeachOtt is moderating tonight! #122edchat
A1: I view assessment as a compass. It can point us in the right direction and can be useful when it serves a purpose. I used to not like tests growing up, and I feel like a test does not measure everything, but it gives an indication. #122edchat
Assessment is a necessary evil! But there are different ways to assess beside pen to paper and options need to be part of our standard toolkit. #122edchat
A1 - Assessment is key in a productive learning environment. Formative assessment allows teachers and students to know what is known/unknown by the student. #122edchat
Q1: Assessment is a significant part of our world in modern education. Some think of it as a powerful tool for improving teaching and learning. Others believe it is a distraction from learning and harmful for students. What are your thoughts and why? #122edchat
A1 it becomes a distraction when it's always a high stakes assessment, it dictates whether you pass or fail and only serves YOU and not the learner. #122edchat
A1 I think assessment is necessary I guide instruction, but I think there is a point when we are assessing our assessments and we are giving tests to put a check in the box! Using formative checks and allowing Ss to show mastery in diff ways is meaningful assessment #122edchat
A1: First, I think the form of assessment is key! Having varied types like entrance/exit slips, projects, class discussions, etc and not just the standard multiple choice test. It's essential to drive instruction and understand students' needs. #122edchat
A1: assessment is a broad term, we make them all of the time. "Is this coffee strong enough? *taste*" , "can I walk in these shoes? *fall*"... I think when people say assessments are a distraction they are referring specifically to state/standardized assessments #122edchat ...
Q1: Assessment is a significant part of our world in modern education. Some think of it as a powerful tool for improving teaching and learning. Others believe it is a distraction from learning and harmful for students. What are your thoughts and why? #122edchat
A2p2: but if we never assess our students, there is no way to know if they are learning what we are trying to teach them. We just can't just their entire life/future on one day of testing #122edchat
#122edchat. A1: It’s all about agreed-upon definitions. Assessment is different things in different scenarios. Assessment AS learning whenever possible please.
#122edchat A1: Like most things, it depends on the context. "Assessment" is neither bad nor good. It can be done in a manner beneficial to both Ts and Ss. Good: Done with Ss growth, development, learning in mind...as a checkpoint in a process. Bad: a measure of permanence.
Q1: Assessment is a significant part of our world in modern education. Some think of it as a powerful tool for improving teaching and learning. Others believe it is a distraction from learning and harmful for students. What are your thoughts and why? #122edchat
#122edchat If you're talking about high stakes standardized tests, they only serve to evaluate and discredit teachers. I don't think a single standardized assessment has ever informed my teaching. I don't make the test, I can't see the questions and answers. It isn't good data.
A1- Assessment can be a negative thing if it isn't used properly. Frequent formative assessments should guide instruction while summative assessments should be saved to demonstrate final knowledge on a topic, but not be the end-all-be-all. #122edchat
A1: Assessment should be a form of communicating what ss know and should come in multiple forms and at multiple times for each concept. It’s the only way to make knowledge and learning visible and value (bad grade) should not be placed on it. #122edchat
Q2: There are three ways to use assessment: OF learning, FOR learning, and AS learning. Assessment of learning is easy to understand- think summative assessment! What do you think assessment FOR learning means? What would it look like? #122edchat
A1:Assessments are https://t.co/LwZ7wqVIyj long as we know how to use them correctly, they are useful. If we use a hammer to try to put a screw in a wall, it will not be as effective as if we use a screwdriver. The same way, we match assessments to the intended outcome. #122EdChat
Q1: Assessment is a significant part of our world in modern education. Some think of it as a powerful tool for improving teaching and learning. Others believe it is a distraction from learning and harmful for students. What are your thoughts and why? #122edchat
A1 I am glad that our DepEd decided to differentiate assessment: graded (summative) vs non-graded (formative). Formatives become an effective feedback tool for students to reflect on learning while for the teacher it's to identify misconceptions. #122edchat
A1 things aren’t ever 100% one or the other. Some assessment is incredibly meaningful and important for learning. Others isn’t. It’s important to make sure any time we assess it has value #122EdChat
Q1: Assessment is a significant part of our world in modern education. Some think of it as a powerful tool for improving teaching and learning. Others believe it is a distraction from learning and harmful for students. What are your thoughts and why? #122edchat
And if you ever want to know more about how you can use assessment as a record of student growth, this guy is AWESOME at it! Ask him about his standards based grade book. :) #122edchat
#122edchat
A1: I think having various kinds of assessment is crucial. Bell ringers, exit slips, quizizz, etc.... having one major assessment for a unit is too much. #122edchat
A1- Assessments, both formative and summative, are useful in seeing where are kids are and where we need to go. However, although we know there are better ways to assess, rather than "tests", we still over-test our Ss! We test to prepare for big tests! #122edchat
Assessment is one of the most powerful tools we have as educators. Formatively assessing students, pre and post assessments and other measure are the pulse of learning in the classroom. When used effectively to drive instruction it can be transformative! #122edchat
Q2: There are three ways to use assessment: OF learning, FOR learning, and AS learning. Assessment of learning is easy to understand- think summative assessment! What do you think assessment FOR learning means? What would it look like? #122edchat
A2 Assessment for learning is using student work to feedback. It could be visible thinking strategies utilized to capture understanding. It is also the day to day conferences/conversations you have with your students about the topics discussed in class #122edchat
A2: I think that is the formative assessment. We get a picture of what we already know and what we need to know to accomplish the goal or task at hand. You can use a pre-test to guide instruction or your own learning. #122edchat
Q2: There are three ways to use assessment: OF learning, FOR learning, and AS learning. Assessment of learning is easy to understand- think summative assessment! What do you think assessment FOR learning means? What would it look like? #122edchat
A2: Would this be akin to FORmative assessment? :) Honestly, if you are using assessment for learning there should be some lesson that is being taught because of the process. Growth should occur because of the process? Maybe I am off base on this. #122edchat
A2 This is formative assessment! When we use assessment tools to determine the next step or what direction we need to lead the class, it is assessment FOR learning! For me, it looks like frequent exit slips, quick checks, daily conversations with every single student! #122edchat
A1: Assessment is necessary and valuable as long as it isn’t overdone and it’s information isn’t used for punitive purposes. Data should be used to guide and plan instruction #122edchat
All those smaller parts you mentioned can be a step stone as #formativeassessment that can lead to a learning strand performance task or summative assessment #122edchat
A2 I guess I jumped the gun in Q1. If Ss are given prompt, feedback and allowed to revise/redo/retry, then it is FOR learning. It is not about a "grade" #122edchat
#122edchat
A2: Assessment for learning allows the teacher to pause and reflect. When I did a quizizz with my Ss, if they were not understanding something, it was clear to me, and I knew I had to go back and revisit that question. #122edchat
#122edchat A2- Assessment for learning looks like formative assessment that students can use to learn from their mistakes and teachers can learn what gaps exist in understanding in their students.
I absolutely agree with this premis but I don’t think we can lump all “Assessment” into this category. I absolutely think that assessment data we can’t see or evaluate critically becomes useless to serve its primary function which is DRIVE INSTRUCTION #122edchat
Q2: There are three ways to use assessment: OF learning, FOR learning, and AS learning. Assessment of learning is easy to understand- think summative assessment! What do you think assessment FOR learning means? What would it look like? #122edchat
A2 assessment for learning should be the goal of your class. Having the end in mind, but taking into consideration how best students learn and accounting for differentiation #122edchat
A2: I think it's when we use assessment to guide our instruction. Using it we know whether to move on to the next concept, slow down, or who individually needs more guidance or a challenge! #122edchat
I teach an IB literature course where they take 5 exams over the course of two years. Because they are varied and staggered, I believe it is a more accurate picture of the students aptitude and ability. We complete multiple formative presentations and essays to prep. #122edchat
A2 Honestly, I think it is hard because I think this is where we struggle as a society. We tend to take the results of assessment and put them into a more negative context. We need to use the results for betterment #122edchat
Q2: There are three ways to use assessment: OF learning, FOR learning, and AS learning. Assessment of learning is easy to understand- think summative assessment! What do you think assessment FOR learning means? What would it look like? #122edchat
A2 Assessment for learning communicates what the students have learned so far and should be used to direct us to work on the missing parts/gaps in learning #122edchat
A1: If we are using assessments for the wrong reason, it's not going to benefit our Ss. I'm not a fan of over using assessments. I try to find creative ways to assess my Ss without them feeling pressure to perform perfectly. I do like being able to track Ss growth. #122edchat
A2 @thegridmethod embodies Assessment FOR learning. The assessment is part of the process of learning and will drive the next steps in the cycle of the process. Will the student move to more complex material or need additional practice? This is at the core of mastery. #122edchat
A2: Assessment for learning allows me to see where my Ss are at while we're still learning, make adjustments, & continue to help every student master the skills. Use the feedback to drive the learning. #122edchat
A2: Formative assessments! Student reflections/surveys, exit slips, peer-peer discussions, and 1:1 conferences are some of the formative assessments I do regulary. #122edchat
A2: I think of it for learning as an anticipation guide. Provide a preview for what is going to be learned, assess what ss already know, identify what they want to know, and misconceptions. Also provide next steps for ss and teacher, helps make a plan! #122edchat
A2 assessment FOR learning should involve feedback, conferencing, student reflection, and goal setting! This assessment helps students understand and take ownership of their learning! #champforkids#122edchat
And Thomas hit the whole point of this chat right on the head. Assessment can make learning better! Now we get to figure out how to make that happen!
#122edchat
A3: I did not want to look dumb, so I googled this. Where I can see this finding a place in the classroom is through reflection after activities and lessons. We should be doing this as teachers to better prepare for tomorrow, so why not students as well? #122edchat
A3 One of the best articles about assessment I have ever read is here: https://t.co/ZOPGEmtwHD
It goes into detail about the different ways we USE assessment. When we use assessment AS learning, it is student driven, meaningful, and collaborative. It is reflective! #122edchat
A2:When I assess FOR learning, I give my students tasks to complete to show proficiency in a standard. They get continual feedback on how to grow towards proficiency until they revise and reach it or make an action plan for next time. #122EdChat
I'm from Williston SC and currently teach 7th gr. social studies but may be moving down to 6th. I'm excited to take a deep breath and recharge and reflect because before u know it it's back to school By the way, who would be someone you suggest to follow on twitter? #122edchat
A3: I think using an assessment as learning is more focused on the product itself. I am a fan of project based learning and want my Ss to demonstrate that they do know the content in different ways besides traditional pencil/ paper. #122edchat
A2: for learning should be formative assessments. I have been using quizizz a lot because Ss get instant results. I can schedule questions to stay up for a period of time. It randomizes questions and answers. It has been useful #122edchat
I sometimes use formative assessment for completion grades - as long as the student put in some true effort, it's okay if their answer is wrong! #122edchat
#122edchat
Assessment is definitely not a distraction. It is a necessary part of the learning process. It requires teachers to look at their data and sometimes they are not happy with what the data shows.
A3 assessment as learning should give the teacher a glimpse of how the students' thinking develops over time. From simple ideas to complex ones. #122edchat
Thank you for welcoming me in. I cannot express how much of an impact this #122edchat family has had on me. You were a part of my journey since the beginning. I am excited to be a 1st year teacher and continue this adventure.
A3: some sort of challenge or PBL? I'm not sure, I've heard of formative and summative... can't think of a 3rd type (because I KNOW you don't mean high stakes) #122edchat
A3: Assessment as learning - letting Ss use assessment to show what they've learned however they want! Whatever makes them to most comfortable. #122edchat
A3, for the most I believe this is should be the basis of learning. When you allow students to reflect on their learning and present their finds in new and creative ways. Their work force is going to reward innovation more than ours. #122edchat
A2 @thegridmethod embodies Assessment FOR learning. The assessment is part of the process of learning and will drive the next steps in the cycle of the process. Will the student move to more complex material or need additional practice? This is at the core of mastery. #122edchat
I love that you talk about assessing what they already know! Until we know what they kknow, how can we plan for awesome learning experiences to help them grow? #122edchat
A2: I think of it for learning as an anticipation guide. Provide a preview for what is going to be learned, assess what ss already know, identify what they want to know, and misconceptions. Also provide next steps for ss and teacher, helps make a plan! #122edchat
A3 when we let students constantly reflect on their learning, they become accountable and have a buy-in. This leads to better student engagement and richer discussion of the unit. #122edchat
#122edchat A3 - Assessment AS learning means to me that everything Ss do in our class is really an ongoing assessment. I use @goformative so that I get instantaneous feedback about student performance so all mistakes can be turned into teachable and learning moments.
Q4: Which way do you use assessment most in your classroom? Which do you use least? How would you like to see your assessment practices change for next year? #122edchat
This is my favorite part! They are the ones driving their process. Each student gets the challenge they need - which is different for everyone! #122edchat
Ending on a tough one! A #CER can be used as learning As Ss go through the claim & evidence process they learn which they then apply in their reasoning #122edchat
A3: as learning I think of as a product. Ss apply what they learn in a meaningful way: they show what they learn in ways that are relevant and useful. #122edchat
A3, for the most I believe this is should be the basis of learning. When you allow students to reflect on their learning and present their finds in new and creative ways. Their work force is going to reward innovation more than ours. #122edchat
A4 I have slowly begun moving towards a focus more on mastery than completion and "grades" Next year I want to do more blended learning and assessment, less "test days" #122edchat
A3, for the most I believe this is should be the basis of learning. When you allow students to reflect on their learning and present their finds in new and creative ways. Their work force is going to reward innovation more than ours. #122edchat
A4 it's difficult to tell, but this year I should be more conscious of how I use assessments. I need to craft it in such a way that it's differentiated and variated enough to meet different learning needs. #122edchat
Q4 I am not a classroom T so I am not the best to answer this, but I like to preach Student Choice of Voice when it comes to sharing their outcomes and results. Don't limit to one form or assessment. #122edchat
Q4: Which way do you use assessment most in your classroom? Which do you use least? How would you like to see your assessment practices change for next year? #122edchat
A4: I think across the board formative assessment is underutilized. I think we see it as a something else, rather than an important part of the assessment process. #122edchat
Q4: Which way do you use assessment most in your classroom? Which do you use least? How would you like to see your assessment practices change for next year? #122edchat
A3 - Assessment AS learning means that the reflection on the assessment and the work going into it are part of the learning cycle. This is a critical feedback loop necessary for progress and adjustment. I see this in @gridmethod classrooms constantly! #122edchat
A4: In our Lab, we are pass/fail, so much of the assessment is through self-reflection on process accomplished each day at each engagement. We are looking at alternative methods to better encourage our students to reflect on their accomplishments. #122edchat
A4B: I use assessment of learning the least. I need to work on a better balance of this, but I don't believe that standard, traditional testing works for my content. #122edchat
A4 While I use assessment OF & FOR learning regularly, the most powerful one, assessment AS learning, is harder for me to find/make time for! It takes a while for Ss to reflect, assess their own work, interpret their score, & find ways to improve. #122edchat#GoalsForNextYear
It's all about student reflection, self grading, metacognition, and goal setting! It's letting students critically analyze their own work and learn from it! #122edchat
A4 in our country, test is still king, so I try to make tests fun: posters, mind maps, infographics as summative assessments and not boring old MCQs, True/False, Matching Type #122edchat
#122edchat A4 - I used to use summative assessment the most, but i've changed to only teaching through self-paced playlists, video, and @goformative, so now my class is driven through constant formative assessment. See how I do it - https://t.co/XshqOcviSX
Using the results for improvement means having the right types of assessment at the right times, knowing what they mean, and the types of improvements that can come. That isn’t typically happening on a large scale #122EdChat
A4: I feel like I have been using assessment for learning, and I feel like I have not been using assessment as learning as much as I would like. As a soon to be 1st year teacher, I want to use @thegridmethod and focus on utilizing the teach further model. #122edchat
luckily I'm still a first year teacher for 1 more week so I'm allowed to look stupid LOL! After NEXT Thursday I gotta step up! #HereComesYear2#122edchat
#122edchat. A2: Yes, and then assessment AS learning is where students are driving a lot more of the learning through making learning visible and through self- and peer-assessment.
A2: Assessment for learning allows the teacher to pause and reflect. When I did a quizizz with my Ss, if they were not understanding something, it was clear to me, and I knew I had to go back and revisit that question. #122edchat
A4: I use assessment of & for the most & I know I need to incorporate much more AS learning! SO much more reflection & goal setting next year! #122edchat
Using the results for improvement means having the right types of assessment at the right times, knowing what they mean, and the types of improvements that can come. That isn’t typically happening on a large scale #122EdChat
Great question! Explicit instruction and continued practice! Just like you teach procedures at the start of the year, you also teach what reflection looks like and how to self assess. Then you practice, refine, and set aside time for it to happen. #122edchat
I know that I am biased, but follow anyone here tonight! Some amazing leaders amassed in one location. Also check out #masterychat and #waledchat tomorrow evening...7 and 8 Central. #122edchat
A3: As students progressively dig deeper into a text and DOK skills, they are constantly being assessed on understanding before they progress to the next skill. They will begin identifying, then summarizing and analyzing, and by the end, they create. #122EdChat
#122edchat A4 - I used to use summative assessment the most, but i've changed to only teaching through self-paced playlists, video, and @goformative, so now my class is driven through constant formative assessment. See how I do it - https://t.co/XshqOcviSX
A4 Assessment for learning is my most frequent type of Assessment. I have Special Need's students, I'm constantly assessing what they know and where the gaps are in order to continue the learning #122edchat
A4: I use formative the most and summative the least. Ss can redo any assignment. I allow ss to choose how to show what they learn. Sometimes I give an assignment, grade it, give some ss it in a diff format, maybe even in a 3rd format. Working on a blog about it! #122edchat
A3: My Ss had to research an animal & make a zoo placard. While conferencing with them, they were showing me what they learned & they didn't have to have a formal assessment. I feel like if they can explain the purpose of the standard, they have shown me they learned. #122edchat
I utilize essays more than tests as I think it demonstrates more of what a student knows. This past year, I tried a sketchnote essay with accompanying quotes from text to prove their points. Kids loved it. #122edchat
#122edchat
A2: Assessment FOR learning provide students with the opportunity to learn and take control of the learning process. It also provides the teacher with opportunities to reteach or provide enrichment.
I will be doing an unconference on using apps to promote student engagement and reflection...basically assessment in the classroom but with tech integration. I'll post a video of it when I am done #122edchat
Q5: What are your favorite resources for using assessment well in your classroom? These could be tech tools, favorite products from Teachers Pay Teachers, something you have created yourself, or even a person we should all follow! Share the wealth! #122edchat
I used and now share the power of consistent, accountable and real time formative assessment linked with quick, targeted, and direct feedback for Ss. This is a pillar of Mastery Learning. Summative assessments then becomes more of a “double check” #122edchat
Absolutely! In reality, all three times of assessment overlap and are inseperably linked. Just as summative assessment is really never an ending point (or shouldn't be), assessment for and as learning are also deeply connected! #122edchat
A5: I love the I-Checks with the @FOSSscience curriculum, and they can be used as a formal assessment or more of a casual, "group test" type of assessment. #122edchat
A5 @flipgrid@edpuzzle and soon I will try out @plickers for assessing. Padlet is still my favorite app for student thinking, learning, and reflection. #122edchat
A4: I use formative the most throughout a unit. Ss can retry throughout the unit. When I think about changes, I need to slow down and be consistent throughout the year. #122edchat
Ending on a tough one! A #CER can be used as learning As Ss go through the claim & evidence process they learn which they then apply in their reasoning #122edchat
A5 Resource: My Students
When I read their work & LISTEN to their conversations I have a pathway to assess them in a way they will be comfortable with Many good resources, but can't forget the ones in front of us #122edchat

Thanks so much for everything tonight, @TechieTeachOtt! You always know how to get a conversation going! If you enjoyed hanging out with Tiffany tonight in #122edchat, be sure to join her tomorrow in #masterychat at 7!
A5 I love tech! There are so many amazing tools out there that can help with all 3 kinds of assessments! I use @edpuzzle for formative assessment (assessment FOR learning) often. @Flipgrid is a great way for reflecting during assessment AS learning! So many options! #122edchat
Claims - Evidence - Reasoning - it's a tool that can be used in many different ways to help students assess their own learning (at least that's how I use it!). #122edchat
Here's my latest blog post on maximizing the effectiveness of multiple-choice questions:

My blog is full of easily modifiable activities for formative assessment...it's really a main focus for me.

Q5: What are your favorite resources for using assessment well in your classroom? These could be tech tools, favorite products from Teachers Pay Teachers, something you have created yourself, or even a person we should all follow! Share the wealth! #122edchat
A4b: I want to break down each standard into concepts. Find multiple ways for ss to practice and show what they learned. Have a check off sheet so I can see how many times ss showed me that concept. Also have diff intelligences covered. Have a few units but not all! #122edchat
A5 best tools are the ones students discover themselves. I may know of some but it's the way my students manipulate those tools that amaze me #122edchat
Q4: 1. Formative 2. Summative. Next year, I want to add in even more student reflection of learning after their assessments & testing Ss as they are ready in a unit (That's where @thegridmethod comes in handy). #122edchat

A4: I assess FOR learning most. I use assessment AS learning a little less frequently. Next year, I want to incorporate ways of providing quick and thoughtful feedback to all 160 of my students’ essays. If you have any ideas, please send them my way! #122EdChat
Q4: Which way do you use assessment most in your classroom? Which do you use least? How would you like to see your assessment practices change for next year? #122edchat
I often say, "I don't care what you did, I care what you know." If they can explain it to me in conversation, I am satisfied. (Unless, of course, the thing they need to know requires written language!) #122edchat
A3: My Ss had to research an animal & make a zoo placard. While conferencing with them, they were showing me what they learned & they didn't have to have a formal assessment. I feel like if they can explain the purpose of the standard, they have shown me they learned. #122edchat
A4: I would like to see assessments change next year to make it more learning focused. Not making sure I have all my data and drilling my Ss. I want them to take ownership of their learning! #122edchat
A5: my favorite things for assessment: @quizizz@Flipgrid@quizlet having Ss add thought bubbles to a pic in google drawings, making memes, etc.. #122edchat
Keep talking about it. Sharing it. Annoying colleagues about it. The more we share, the more our grassroots movement of awesome educations ready for the #educationrevolution grows! #122edchat
A5: So many amazing tools from @Padlet, #Googleforms, @GetKahoot, to @nearpod. A personal fav is allowing student choice and creation for assessments. They create them throughout the learning process then allow classmates to take them and give feedback! @GoogleEdu#122edchat
A4 - for most of the year we have weekly summatives on the standard we are covering (that was your "of" I guess). I've grown my formatives as my year progressed. Still not really sure about the "As" one #122edchat
A5: I love having students create maps of novel settings! It is a great way to represent their learning in visual form. Plus students always come up with answers that surprise me. #122edchat
A5: @PearDeck- hands down! Easily assesses where each ss is and collectively what needs to be reviewed. Helps assess where there are holes in my activities. #122edchat
You guys are such an awesome group of educators that inspire me. Thank you for having me here tonight on #122edchat to talk all about assessment. i have lots of ideas from all of you and I hope you found it valuable as well. You rock! Now, go forth and #teachbetter!
A1: Assessment can be both an ally and a distraction. Depending how you use it, it can tell you the academic health of students. I am a firm believer of progress monitoring. #122edchat
#122edchat. A5: I’m stuck on things like tarsia puzzles. Group students according to entry points for the same big-picture concept. Have students then individually use Flipgrid to verbalize how they solved one of the matching edges of the tarsia puzzle.
I am always shocked at how often preassessments are given and then ignored! It is tragic. :(
Give preassessments that are meaningful and then put that information to good use! #122edchat

Started using @Flipgrid this year for #globalcollaboration and lesson hooks, but plan to start using it more for formative in the fall. Just got a set of @plickers at a PD Monday so looking forward to trying it too. Have had a few good exit slips and review games #122edchat

#122edchat
A3: Assessment AS learning means that assessment is a two-way street. As the students are learning the teacher is assessing and making instructional adjustments and as the teacher is assessing the students are taking ownership of their own learning.
A2: Assessment FOR learning should be used to help Ts inform their instructional decisions. If we aren’t using the data to show us what Ss already know, have learned, need help with- then WHY are we administering it? #122EdChat#LoveLiteracyLearning
Q4: Which way do you use assessment most in your classroom? Which do you use least? How would you like to see your assessment practices change for next year? #122edchat
A4: to help guide instructional decisions that need to be made. What type of interventions, practice, extension opportunities do Ss need based on what the data/observations show us? I’d like to see this become more authentic for Ts #122edchat#LoveLiteracyLearning
A3: Assessment AS learning gives you information in real time and allows Ts teachable moments right then and there- not days or weeks later. Clear up any misconceptions and/or praise new found understanding as it happens! #122EdChat#LoveLiteracyLearning
