The #educoach hashtag is used by instructional coaches around the world. We chat each Wednesday at 8pm CST on Twitter and use the hashtag throughout the week to share resources, ask questions and collaborate with instructional coaches.
Right this second I'm celebrating an #IowaState win (basketball). We needed this one. Professionally - a great planning sessions with our Teacher Leadership team today! #EduCoach
Hi, I'm Julie Nelson, Advanced Learning Facilitator in Arlington Heights, IL. Celebrating that I've slowed down to listen more than speak this week. #educoach
Good evening! Lauren, K-5 Instructional Coach, Indiana and co-moderator for tonight's chat. My #eduwin is colleagues taking new risks like using @goswivl for the first time! Looking forward to tonight's chat with @boxofcrayons! #educoach
Hi #educoach! My #eduwin was modeling @WODBMath and #numbertalks in two schools this week.
Good to be here, but probably have to leave half way through to pick up my kid at swimming.
Let’s get started with tonight’s topic: Chapter 4 - The Foundation Question. We will keep this short so you have time to ask Michael all your questions! #educoach
Q1 Have you tried incorporating any of The Coach Habit’s 1st 3 questions: What’s on your mind? And what else? What’s the real challenge here for you? Share your experiences. #educoach
Hello! I’m Karen, a first-year K-4 Instructional Coach from Indiana. My #eduwin this week was some great purposeful planning with my Ts this week and supporting them as they took some big steps/risks with their instruction! #educoach
A1 if you're going to pick one of those to start using, "and what else?" is often the easiest one. You can add it in to almost any convo: their first answer is rarely their best or only answer #educoach
A1 Our Teacher leader planning group had a great discussion of the questions use and plan to incorporate them w/out work with coaches in a few weeks. #educoach
A1: After modeling today, I asked "what did you think?" This took the conversation in different directions. Sometimes I ask "what did you think about how students responded?" "And what else" keeps the conversations going. I can always talk less though... #educoach
A1: Yes! It went really well. However, I found it easy to get pulled into the conversation, especially if it’s really interesting! Have to be able to refocus and make sure it’s about them, not you. #educoach
A1 if you're going to pick one of those to start using, "and what else?" is often the easiest one. You can add it in to almost any convo: their first answer is rarely their best or only answer #educoach
A1: Yes, very effective. I still need a lot of work on AWE, but "what's the real challenge" was extremely effective in focusing an idea. #educoach#educoach
#EduCoach A1: Yes have worked on asking more questions that begin with "What." Now I see @boxofcrayons how your 7 essential ?s in #TheCoachingHabit start with "What." 🗳Will stick with more "What" questions and less "Why" questions. 📒
Q2: What are your thoughts about reframing “why” questions to “what” questions as @boxofcrayons describes in the opening of Part 4 in The Coaching Habit? #educoach
I’ve definitely had that struggle! Talking about teaching and learning is my passion, but I need to temper my talking a bit to encourage their passion! #educoach
@boxofcrayons how true to the order should one generally stay? Obviously a convo will dictate, but are they in this order as a way to structure a convo? #educoach
great question, Heath. The 7 questions do have an "arc" to them ... but I'd encourage people to listen, and then ask the best question that occurs to you, no matter where it appears in the "right order" #educoach
Q2: What are your thoughts about reframing “why” questions to “what” questions as @boxofcrayons describes in the opening of Part 4 in The Coaching Habit? #educoach
A1 if you're going to pick one of those to start using, "and what else?" is often the easiest one. You can add it in to almost any convo: their first answer is rarely their best or only answer #educoach
A2 sometimes we ask "why... ?" so WE get more data, so WE can solve the problem. Asking the question helps us more than it helps the person we're asking #educoach
#EduCoach ⚠️A2: Now understand why posing ?s w/a why in a focused conversation can backfire & put Ts on the defensive. 🤚🏼From 📒@boxofcrayons "You want more detail because you want to fix the problem. Suddenly you're back in the vicious cycle of overdependence & overwhelm."🌀
A2: “Why” often puts someone on the defensive. They need to justify their thoughts or actions. “What” brings about a more productive response. #educoach
I was going to ask what you recommend instead, but then I saw the graphic in the thread. Great examples! I always told my Ss I was going to ask them “why” abt everything, but we can’t treat professionals as Ss. #educoach
A2: "What" questions are less threatening than "why" questions.
So many of the tips in this book can apply to our work with students, too - make sure everyone feels safe.
#educoach
A2 sometimes we ask "why... ?" so WE get more data, so WE can solve the problem. Asking the question helps us more than it helps the person we're asking #educoach
Yes - I was just thinking about how these questions would be helpful with students.
The questions don't have to be secrets for the coach. Share them with teachers! #educoach
A3: As coaches, we need to meet Ts where they are. We have to understand where they are, and what their needs are in order to support them and their progress. #educoach#educoach
#EduCoach A3: Role can be the difference between clarity &👇🏼We assume what the other person wants or needs which then leads to frustration. #TheCoachingHabit
"The single biggest problem with communication is the illusion that it has taken place." ➰🔘➰
-George Bernard Shaw
#EduCoach A3: The simple yet powerful question "What do you want?" can👇🏼and 🔜 "has the effect of pulling people to the outcome, and once you see the destination, the journey often becomes clearer." From #TheCoachingHabit 📒@boxofcrayons#BetterTogether#PLN
A3 "what do I want?" is a really useful variation to ask yourself, when you're feeling discombobulated or knocked off balance. Helps you find your feet #educoach
A4: All so important!
Tribe - coach is part of the teaching tribe
Expectation - clarity of the coaching cycle or work together
Rank - coach and teacher must share rank and build status of teacher
Autonomy - teachers must have choice in coaching
#educoach
A5: 😊As an #EduCoach so impt to communicate as was recently shared "This is a face of a friend. I want you to succeed. If you see pain, then I'm doing something wrong." Just like Ss if they feel safe & their affect filter is lowered they're most likely to take risks & engage

Thanks for this. I’ve always struggled with how to bridge the rank gap erroneously created by position/title. In my mind, im still the same “let’s share ideas and collaborate” T that I’ve always been, but that title changes the way other Ts look at u sometimes. #educoach

A4 Rank, in the moment, is typically not about title or hierarchy. You can manage Rank (the R in TERA) but such tactics as sitting or standing at the same level, sitting next to not across, shaking hands or touching them on the elbow #educoach
A5: @boxofcrayons If you could give advice to a first-year Instructional Coach, what would be the most important little nugget you would share? #educoach
A5 eg "I know I've tended to jump in and answer the question when we've talked before ... but this time just let me ask, what's the real challenge here for you?" #educoach
A5: @boxofcrayons What kinds of effective ?s can we ask ourselves as Coaches to truly identify what we really really want and need??? Are there essential questions we could be asking ourselves? #TheCoachingHabit#EduCoach
#What prompts an execution; #Why empowers critical thinking, engagement, ownership, innovation, capacity building.
In an education setting, even in management, I want my team to engage.... not execute. #UnlearnWhatYouHaveLearned
Calling @jprofNB to share thoughts?
#educoach
A5 I like "what do I know to be true for me right now?" it helps me to start teasing apart data, feelings and judgments/opinions. That often calms me down and gets me clearer on what I want #educoach

A5 nice question, Karen! I'll tell you my thoughts ... but first, let me ask you: what advice would YOU share? #educoach (I know you know what I'm doing here *grin*)
In a coaching context, "why" questions can easily lead to a downward spiral of problem focused thinking. "What" Qs lead to what's wanted instead - solution focused! #educoach

A4 once you understand TERA, it's then lots of small tactical things that can raise the TERA quotient. Asking questions is always a good approach of course! For A = Autonomy, I'm always asking: what small choices can I give them

Welcome Kerri. I'm in Iowa, too. Glad you could join use. We are currently asking @boxofcrayons questions on our minds about his book The Coaching Habit. #educoach
True. The ‘what’ direct and clarifies success... yet, educators can differentiate, or gage, with background information. #educoach
Great challenges @boxofcrayons#kudos

I think both types of questions are necessary. It’s up to the coach to gauge which one, when, and how often. It depends on the person being coached. #educoach

The coaching I see that has the most impact is small, daily interactions (drip irrigation beats an occasional flash flood) ... and for me coaching is "simply": can you stay curious a little longer, rush to action and advice a little more slowly #educoach

Read chapter one of The Coaching Habit, create a habit and then go for it! (Just trying to remember to use it is going to be less successful, typically) #educoach
For us at Box of Crayons, if you can't coach in 10 minutes or less, you don't have time for coaching. And coaching (or being more coach-like) is not something you're ADDING to what you do. It's about transforming what you currently do #educoach

I feel that mandating formal coaching cycles takes away the authenticity and trust; rather it becomes viewed as more of an evaluative element. #educoach
#EduCoach Love it! So important to build trust one question, conversation, & interaction at a time. Indeed as Coaches we can only go as fast as we can deposit into the bank of trust. Our foundation is begins with building relationships and trust. #TheCoachingHabit

Q6 We are nearing the end of the hour. Feel free to keep the questions coming for @boxofcrayons
OR
What is something you will take away from tonight’s chat and try in your own situation? #educoach
#EduCoach Would love to learn more about this!👇🏼 "But there are still new frontiers of knowledge to be explored, & one of the most exciting is neuroscience... we're starting to see that the art of leadership has its basis in science." 〰🔹〰#TheCoachingHabit#BrainBasedCoaching
A6 I do have a small favour to ask (related to "what do you want?): If you've read The Coaching Habit and are so inclined, a review on Amazon is v appreciated #educoachhttps://t.co/OQXwMluDMm
Love it. (I need to learn to do better at asking for reviews for our book - The Coach Approach to School Leadership) #educoach
I loved your page in the middle of the book, too! :) Masterful!
Q5: what process do recommend for teachers to enter into coaching relationships for a system with a new coaching model? Obviously not thinking about mandating, but would love some fresh ideas... thanks! #educoach
#EduCoach
Great question! Mandating is loaded and diminishes voice & choice.
I recently heard this difference:
Coaches can request & suggest
Admin can require
Huge difference!
And... by sustaining a “transformation”... you are enabling a leader to adopt a leadership role of “disposition” to support, in his/her turn others.... avoiding the autocratic leadership. #educoach
A6: Excellent chat that showcased the power of Twitter! Thank you @boxofcrayons for your insight and taking the time to participate! #educoach#educoach
