Welcome to tonight. Let's start with introductions. Tell us about You, Who, where, and what you teach!
We use the:
Q1:
A1:
format for the
Question 1 is on the way!!!
Monica from Ohio, teaching 1st but just found out I'm looping with my kids to 2nd next year!
A1: Cooperative groups focus on Ss working together to respond to a task, problem or question
love my kids, but it's going to be a lot of new content/not getting to do my fav activities :(
A1: Cooperative groups the Ss have group roles and responsibilities
A1 My Cooperative Learning page https://t.co/yRmeUKVdMy Had great success using this with MS students in inner city
small group, it kind of depends on your definition tho, Ed vocabulary is not consistent
A1: small groups usually independent
A1: Small groups the Ss are usually working at their independent levels
Don't forget to use the so everyone can see your tweets.
A2: very important to be high quality activities as opposed to “busy work"
A2 Students need to learn to work in groups. Each student needs a specific role in the group for it to work.
A2: one of the pros of small groups is having quality dialogue time to pinpoint students' strengths.
This is key to keep students accountable. https://t.co/if5H7bZM9d
A2 Students need to learn to work in groups. Each student needs a specific role in the group for it to work.
+=targeted instruction, T is control of the direction... -= doesn't foster leadership or ownership
A2: Small groups are normally differentiated and strategic instruction
A2: Con to small group little accountability for Ss
A2: Depending on the students, even within SG there may be ways to foster leadership/accountability
A2: I think of our Ts doing Guided Reading Groups or Targeted Math Instruction to differentiated Groups
A2: Effective face to face engagement. More one on one instruction. You dont feel rushed. Able to focus on the specific need
Teacher led vs. Independent Small Groups A2
If a Ts has 30 Ss how can small group be effective
A2:My small group is 5 to 7 Ss. My disadvantage is I only have 30 min every day, but I try to be effective in my teaching
A3: CL= teacher is more of a facilitator and students learn from each other as they go. SG=teacher is the source.
A3: T is facilitator of cooperative groups - set structure and get out of the way
That’s challenging, your procedures and management have to be on point
A3: In small group the Ts set the objectives on what will be learned.
Not being on my tweetdeck is killing me
very true, there’s a need for Ts to give up some control with cooperative groups A2
A4: for projects; exploring new concepts; to culminate a unit of learning; comparing big ideas
A4 Students need to be prepared & understand their functions in a group before you use cooperative learning groups.
A4 w/o structure cooperative groups could be difficult https://t.co/B9jwnzRZT3
A4 Students need to be prepared & understand their functions in a group before you use cooperative learning groups.
A4:Ts should use CL whenever they feel Ss can help each other acquire intended skills/knowledge
A4: but there are so many other factors that help determine when its "appropriate" lol (BEHAVIOR)
A4:Not sure when it's appropriate, but today in a Ts room,Ss were in small groups & they had a leader, engaging & checking
A4 I agree with that!!! and even "structure" itself can take on so many different forms!
A4: May be appropriate at the "yall do" step because they've been introduced to it, so now they can discuss and do
A4: when solving problems, researching, when a product is the goal, multiple perspectives help all grow
A5, if the reason for SG is to strengthen weaknesses, they all look similar across levels, save content/rigor
A5: they should both consist of targeted instruction based on Ss need
What are people doing to affirm ethnic identities while maintaining a high bar for rigor and standards based teaching?
A5: Some Ts would argue that small group is not only for remediation
A5:Engagement! For me, the only quiet time is leaving my room going in the hall. Lesson should be modeled. Can't assume anything
Do all Ts have to use station work during small group?
A5: can be for extending learning as well; also getting students to dig deeper.
Students need systems for holding each other accountable for learning that happens in groups. Just assigning roles is enough.
I agree! All students can benefit from targeted small group instruction
so true! check your assumptions @ the door
I agree.I've seen some teachers use small groups with a CL structure. SG numbers with CL strategies
Cooperative learning is great for discovery based lessons that have bright lines between transitions within the lesson.
A6: opportunities when students need time to expand upon ideas; when there is a clear structure in place to support CL
A6: Project based learning requires cooperative learning structures
Great Qs tonight. Definitely food for thought for Ts everywhere.
There are some administrators that require small group instruction. Do you agree with this?
A6: Diagraming the plot of a story (post reading) Students can clear up misconceptions with one another.
small group instruction will be distinctively more teacher directed at the Elem level.
I think it depends on how much time they require, not everything can be done in small group
it’s essential for Ts to get a closeup look at Ss level of mastery. + to facilitate conversations re: learning
I do not agree with admin MANDATING SG, but Ts should have some system for addressing what SG addresses.
In my FB group there was a Ts that said her middle school principal mandated small groups
Thank you all for an informative . Join us next week to discuss how to use in the classroom!
