#games4ed Archive
#games4ed discussions cover ways in which gaming can be used in education. Games mirror the way the human mind was designed to learn. They motivate players to take risks and actions, persevere through failures, set and achieve increasingly difficult goals, and devote attention, time, and effort to acquiring knowledge and skills. All this while the game is tracking the player’s actions and assessing the player’s achievements and skills. Isn’t this what we want from education?

Justin, Ohio, and it’s really hard to pick one! Docs? Slides? Sites? Forms?… Hmm…
Hi all. Dianne 4/5 T from soCal. Fav is Classroom! Close 2nd is Slides
Happy Thursday! Melissa from Nebraska, 11-12 ELA. Fave GAFE app: Forms! Drawing is second fave! https://t.co/Xd4zILycgR
Nathan, Mars, and google search page
I know, right? Man, I didn't think about slides...Now I want to change my vote!
Hey Dianne! Wonderful to have you and all your ideas once again!
Probably going to spend most of this time learning than participating. But we’ll see!
Kevin, Socal, 7/8 history, probably Forms, I HATE slides, ugh.
Best ideas come from learning!
It's never the same when you don't join us via interstellar interwebz. Glad you're here!
Hi everyone! Adina from Alberta, 7 hum/foods, Gclass and... well, all of them :)
No prob! Feel free to chime in if the spirit moves you!
me and my boy Matt Damon are chilling in the dome
No go on slides, huh? They probably tie with forms as my favorite.
and for the record I hate sites
Agree. New are better, but still UGH!
Mark the Minecraft Author here, Hi everyone!
Me too. BUT sites is going through a major upgrade, so this fall it will get much much better https://t.co/Y8YLiKYIYI
and for the record I hate sites
I like slides as a visual support for the Ss - especially when I use slidescarnival!
Following the Q1/A1 format (or whatever creates for his answers) Q1 coming up!
Its just so ugly and limited. Keynote or PPT, yes please.
Q1. How have you/can you use GAFE apps that modify existing games?
%1 use forms as a score record
Excellent point on appearance. But love for collaborative work or for ebook creation
I concur - I love the collab - and that I can work on it on any of my devices!
I built an XP tracker for my class game in Forms. I think it will help a ton this year.
~1 use google shortener to make likes to digital game parts
A1: Using forms with is great!
I found this today how plays Battleship w/algebra Ss using Slides. Pretty cool, though I don't teach math
A1: Use google sheets to record digital badging achievements.
I'm using breakouts for the first time this year... can you share how you used it?
I'm doing this later this week with a Google Drive Quest
Maybe I'm dense, but I'm not understanding you.
We creatd a review for science unit & did one for poetry from the librarian.
Do you have a link for that? Would love to see it! Thanks!
Some of my students have also created CYOA stories using forms. (Possible on slides & docs, too)
use goo web address shortener to make shorter link for digital parts of games
Can I know why? That's a lot of negative energy towards something inanimate.
yeah but is was taking the longest path
I want to do this. Need time to look into it more.
A1: Linking the Easter Eggs that I’m placing around my site to specific Docs with instructions to gain XP for discovering
Amazon has a new CYOA Story maker for the voice controlled Alexa, looks awesome.
Q2 coming up. I got distracted by discussion.
Incredibly limited, encourages awful presentation techniques to students.
What a great idea! This may become a thing ... I am thinking about ways to do this already! What a gem! https://t.co/sQvsZPrDOE
A1: Linking the Easter Eggs that I’m placing around my site to specific Docs with instructions to gain XP for discovering
A2: Google Drawing hasn't been mentioned yet--a great starting app for creating & playing games!
A2: A shared google doc is vital for brainstorming and making design docs.
Just started w/Drawings w/Ss. am liking what I have seen so far, just need to figure out how to integrate it more
I’ll explain more later in a future question!
Great point! Anyone know if there's a chat component on drawings like there is on Slides & Docs? https://t.co/R0YfNTHmbe
A2: A shared google doc is vital for brainstorming and making design docs.
Slides for sure - my Ss use it all the time :)
Feel free to talk about it now if you want :) We'll jump to that question next
. One way I love Drawing is to create unit quest maps for lessons that students can move thru at own pace.
I am creating 6 different maps to lead to lockers in the school - do you think this would work well?
Noob comment: I’m reading a lot of answers that are mostly about how you’re using GAFE. Not getting much about how linked to games
OK, we're going to jump to Q5... then we'll come back to Q3 & Q4. Cool?
I'm still new to the gaming idea, so mine won't be too specific YET
Ah ha! Here we go! https://t.co/CGOjcGkAfv
. One way I love Drawing is to create unit quest maps for lessons that students can move thru at own pace.
A5: Is there a way to hide a link? I know with forms u could hide based on answers chosen like CYOA, but not sure Easter Egg type
True. We're on tangents a bit, which is cool. We've touched a little on Battleship, CYOA, game creation
A5: Place images around the site that link to a Doc you create with directions or possibly a next step to claim the EA
are we rolling for questions?
In Docs/Sheets you can change the text color to white to hide them. I use that trick with BreakoutEDUs.
Great trick! So simple, but not something I would have thought about. Thanks
A5: In google Drawing, create a shape. Link it to an Easter Egg page. Then turn it invisible. Lots of possibilities :)
A5: Example: Go to link https://t.co/uPUEHRtRdb , click your Guide tab, scroll all the way down, click on GLHF image.
I'm only just starting to learn how to use it. I put a digital into it. Worked well.
A5: Also, Pokeball gif is (kind of) an obvious EA. Not telling Ss it will link to side quest Doc.
A5: Another forms Easter Egg could be at the end of a form. How often do Ss read the msg after submitting a form?
Instead of using the default "Thank you for submitting this form," change the msg to a nondescript hint to a sidequest or egg.
OK, going back to Q3 in a second!
Q3: No one has mentioned Google Maps yet. How can we capitalize on this and use it for games? https://t.co/Mn3Ut7hqTE
A5: Another Egg idea. Hide a hint in the background on a form--something in the image that some Ss wouldn't notice
A3: One of the Digital games use it for a directional lock clue as you "follow the journey." It was pretty cool!
Great question! An easter egg is a hidden quest or prize in a game. Something only a few players might find.
is on my list of sites to explore. Been seeing it mentioned quite a bit lately!
Google maps are great for authentic gamified math problems, even make shift Pokemon go style game mechanics!
Highly encourage it! I just set one up for first day of school. All clues originate in syllabus on mine!
You'll love it! So many possibilities and since many games already done set up is easy
Never thought of it with math, but so true!! And integrating it with Pokemon...even better!!! https://t.co/Wc5sNCeDJg
Google maps are great for authentic gamified math problems, even make shift Pokemon go style game mechanics!
A4: I would think similar answer to previous ?s, look for clues/ Easter Eggs w/in video, embed video into game doc?
A4: Going to have Epic Quests encourage video creating that will be uploaded to our class YouTube channel. Huge XP gainer!
Love that idea!! Might have to steal that!!
A4: Ss can create annotation links to other videos based on question choices. A video version of choose your own story!
Oh hey, another great idea! Very simple, but easy to overlook! https://t.co/UCFc3DrLut
Just popped in...I'm planning on screencapturing direct instruction. I could have a clue placed in the background or in content
OK, now to Q6 after some jumping around :) Here we go!!! Share a link to a great playful GAFE resource! https://t.co/WwSCuzdfuu
That would be cool. What age do you think could handle this?
I'd say middle school and up. Maybe upper elementary. Lots of planning and thinking would be required!
A6: This isn't a game, but a quest-based activity for learning Google. I'm tweaking it and using it ! https://t.co/H4AvMESy6I
I must have missed the Battleship and CYOA things from earlier!
Great resource Thanks for sharing
. Would love a resource for CYOA too!
That's all the questions I have! Thanks to all who posted!!! Have a great end of summer/start of school! https://t.co/bhcOuTuiwo
Thanks for sharing, everyone!
Thanks for the ideas! Have a great night.
Sorry, had to duck out - a sick critter in my house! I will read over this shortly - thanks for the ideas!
