Start by asking if students see windows AND mirrors or just mirrors.

Yes, we need to talk about differences early, and our discussions have to be well informed.

I tell Ss to call me out, teach me--I acknowledge I don't know it all, we're all learning together.

too often the conversations is yes, but because we want to ignore the problems and jump straight to any solution
I would say start finding ways to connect your kids to real kids that are different,make them real people

Thinking of Ss who noticed racism at school--was able to help through good conversation, problem solving.
I teach in a majority minority Title 1 school. Primarily Latinx. Kids were GRATEFUL to share their own experiences
that's awesome you talk abt in 4th grade. I teach senior Criminal Law, many have never heard the term
good approach! Not totally silent, but listening more than talking. That's always hardest for me to decenter myself 😐
And sometimes you'll have to do the heavy lifting. Especially for students. And you *should.*
