Hello there. Random, but has anyone else looked at the #a11y of Smore? It has some real funky heading hierarchy and strange use of buttons (some unlabeled) vs. links. Way more success with the built-in Reader in iOS. #ATchat
Q1: Awareness of Reasonable 504 Accom. Are your 504 teams given opportunities to learn about types of AT like your IEP teams? How do you raise awareness about the range of accom: no/low/high tech?

A1: I am in #highered now, but previously I would say it depends on the people comprising the team. Frequently there is a lot of crossover between #IEP and #504 teams. Or, team members were called in based on need (with much crossover). #atchat
A1: This has been interesting for me at times. As a consultant, I am paid thru SpEd. 504s not handled by SpEd. I work to include this group thru school level training if possible #ATchat
We offer many of the same accommodations to S with 504 plans. I am asked to consult weekly and train staff. I love it! Accessibility for EVERYONE. #atchat
Q2: Determination of Need for AT device/service as accom. Are your IEP AT procedures used for 504 accommodations? Do you have different procedures?
#Atchat
I think being in higher education, a 504 plan has a bit of a different meaning for me. I could speak historically to some of this, but it is less relevant in my day-to-day now. Still important, though. #atchat
Last year at a Tennessee conference, I heard from an advocate who was telling the audience to have schools write 504s and IEPs for their children. While I suppose there’s no legal reason you couldn’t, I don’t understand why you would want to? #ATchat

Higher ed doesn't necessarily follow any particular plan. Whether u have an IEP or 504, it is helpful 2 have that documentation. Instead, higher ed has to do due diligence in "providing accomms under sect 504".. so 504 plan isn't really a thing. Accommodations are tho! #ATchat
Exactly. And if you’re concerned with accommodations post K12, either documentation is useful. But when I asked, the speaker just repeated that the schools have to allow both for her child so I didn’t really get anywhere. #ATchat
IEPs fall under IDEA - it is a law of entitlement to guarentee success.. versus something like the ADA / Section 504 of rehab, which is a civil rights law that guarantees access... so the biggest diff btwn IEP vs. 504 I see is success vs. access #ATchat
ehhh that being said... this is the point of the team. To determine the actual amount of support needed - does explicit instruction need to occur? Or do they need accommodations and modifications solely to ensure access to the curriculum... IEP vs. 504... #ATchat

This is exactly how I teach it to my SLP grad students. But after that conversation I started throwing in an aside that some people seem to think there should be both. This topic comes up in 2 weeks & I was wondering how to handle it this time. #ATchat
Indeed. If a student has an IEP they have significantly more rights and benefits than just a 504. so I am confused as to how that person was stating both were needed. mostly just makes me worried abt the lack of understanding admin in schools must have abt the diff, too #ATchat
oh man. wouldn't muddy the waters! slippery slope. They serve distinct purposes. What is the point of having two if that is the situation? 504/ADA are anti-discrimination laws. IDEA (IEP) aligns w/ FAPE and learning... SLP wannabes should learn this important diff #ATchat
Ok, those 2 exceptions make some sense. Thanks for finding that! That’s not what this person was talking about, I don’t think. My interpretation was that she wanted everything it was possible to get but I continue to have some questions about her advocacy training. #ATchat
#ATchat - just happened to catch this. I want to make sure K-12 folks know that 504 plans (& IEPs) aren't valid after students graduate from h.s. Colleges may offer the same accommodations students had in h.s., but they don't have to: Read on my site: https://t.co/e30nGHITqf
not valid no, but highered often uses documentation to determine necessary accommodations in postsecondary. the information is relevant, just does not translate in the same way (and special instructional services are not received in the same way, either). #ATchat
Q6: PD & Training / Student instruction about AT & FAPE. How do you approach team training for 504 plan accommodations? Have you experienced different issues with Student training for 504 accoms?
#ATchat
The parents are selecting to seek outside intervention instead of trying or continuing IEP interventions that are not targeted for dyslexia. Many are running out of time to get their students up to grade level.
it is madness! constant misinfo/misunderstanding... we get this phone call asking a lot. this is the (lack of) training i am most concerned about (whether a student is going to college or the workforce).. advocacy! #ATchat
Last question
Q7: Share examples of accommodations you have used to support Ss under 504 plans. How different are these from technologies you use with students on iEPs? #ATchat
some of this is really outdated.. and another opportunity for training/support.. intersectionality btwn curriculum accommodation plans in MA and #UDL.. #ATchat
A7: With the move towards UDL in schools - the accommodations are the same AND they are embedded into the learning environment. A Win-Win for ALL! #ATchat
A6 I find training, communication, providing AT resources harder for S with 504 than IEP. Admins don’t know/leverage AT. When AT is in 504 my best bet is always time/training with S. #Atchat
I really buy into the value of UDL for higher ed now that I teach grad students that often don’t disclose any learning issues. I’ll get an occasional request for extra time on in class exams I don’t typically give, but that’s been it. #ATchat
I had my youngest‘s open school night tonight which overlapped the chat. The late night stuff is keeping me from getting to join in!! I was looking forward to catching up on tonight’s chat too! #atchat
My fav thing has been working with faculty to understand the diff btwn #UDL and #differentiatedinstruction - it is one of our most popular workshops on campus! It is important. And it is necessary. Access+Success. #ATchat
