Q1: Please share samples of what you have been doing with the new curric throughout this chat.
-
Love the gif..... Kinda got mesmerized by it....
-
A1 repeating some of my "coding centres" this year to help students explore ADST (and intro eportfolios to new learning community)
-
I created a makerspace to enhance a student-centered classroom. inquiry & problem-solving opportunities for Ss choice
-
-
Q2: (as Q1 is ongoing) What type of resources are you looking at in developing your class learning? Please share.
-
A1: #5-9 Increasing communication, reasoning, multiple representations, even creativity: frac talks https://t.co/5mvcXT0Rtd
-
Cool. Can you expand on the coding centres, please?
-
A1: staring all learning w/ essential questions & using more S Qs to guide resources, learning, & performance tasks
-
Cool. What level? And how does it look?
-
Hi all. I'm here from . I'm lucky I get to help ts integrate new curriculum and new practices for my SD and for
-
A1. Depends where you started with . My focus would be assessment and evaluation. How do you assess HS math competencies?
-
-
A1 Committing more time to Learning Contracts as a strategy for its flexibility and individualisation https://t.co/Ym5aUrkSMJ
-
Love it! can you share some of your work?
-
-
Great question. Thoughts, ?
-
A2 incorp more tech for online portfolio & blogging for podcasts & videos https://t.co/19K4JAuYG0
-
-
Q2: (as Q1 is ongoing) What type of resources are you looking at in developing your class learning? Please share.
-
In 140 characters, what's a Learning Contract?
-
So far, they're too busy having fun to realize they're learning.
-
Absolutely love Carole's work. Helped define my own thinking in math education.
-
-
A1: Also will be piloting Ss blogs for e-portfolio in grade #9 with help from :)
-
A1. Continued. The brings more questions than answers. Makes me look at my practice more critically & why I do things.
-
Introd coding centres to my k-5 school last year to show how coding is a way of thinking (not just keyboarding in a basement)
-
-
A1 and : new curric allows for larger debate unit & google docs allow teams to collaborate in and out of class.
-
A2 Enhance differentiation by providing more Ss choice. Using Skype to connect to other classrooms globally & interviews
-
A2 I'm a big fan of & G.Wiggins. UbD helps Ss plan their inquiry using a strong framework. I ❤️ their Essential Qs res
-
Two great educators here doing amazing things!
-
-
Love that connecting the world aspect ()
-
Learning contracts are like 'genius hour' but with more structure and qualitative and quantitative goals
-
Coding centres ranged from to and actual secret codes to some w power
-
Ian, what prgms are you using? I have exp. with and Sketch Up! Where else can I go?
-
Q2: What type of resources are you looking at in developing your class learning? Please share.
-
Very important! As a CS major, I'm really hoping Ss understand coding is abt logical & computational thinking!
-
❤️ starting with the why. Need our learners to do the same. Such a powerful beginning leads to powerful opportunities
-
A2 I'm looking FOR good resources to approach the First Nations components of the curric.
-
Love that LEGO! I really want to introduce this to my students, somehow.
-
Scratch is awesome! There's a lot we can do with it. Thinking abt using it in Math 8!
-
Awesome. I will have to look out for that, as I am a fan of genius hour.
-
A2 Not tied to a class but aiming to provide more collab time for teachers. Looking at imaginative games for multiple classes.
-
Ss create 5 min expert podcasts & have recorded their cells children's books for our PBL
-
A2: Developing inquiry based probs for Ss to construct deeper understanding collaboratively #4-11 https://t.co/El3wSGC0Cv
-
There are some great resources through the group.
-
A2 Looking more closely at the "3 ActMathLesson"= an approach that is more flexible, inclusive,+engaging https://t.co/HSqrKT9RVI
-
Great resource! Had success with Gr. 2 developing own vid games.
-
best investment I make is lego architecture studio -the all-white bricks really help w self-ref
-
Thx! Hope it will turn out well! My intention is for them to keep track their progress 'til Mandarin 12!
-
Hi - I'm a bit late and mostly lurking tonight :)
-
Thx 👍 focusing on the why helps me to focus on student learning and student strengths. https://t.co/a2odZCJxyr
-
-
❤️ starting with the why. Need our learners to do the same. Such a powerful beginning leads to powerful opportunities
-
A2 also love and @RightQuestion@ resources to help Ss form powerful, open ended, essential questions
-
Hi Errin. Great to have you here. Just looking at resources we are using.
-
A1 #9 Continued emphasis on stories- Ss chronicling their learning thru the year
-
that's gonna be the challenge - abed should look different from region to region to reflect local nations
-
There is so much power in the stories. Love it!
-
I also like LOGO (turtle academy, turtle pond, etc)
-
Angelee from NVan, gr 3 FrIm. Last year my 3s built math games using scratch with help from
-
I'm experimenting w/ two-stage test (individual + group) + math fair this yr! Want to focus on communication!
-
A2 I'd be thrilled if you all looked at my book
. I propose a gradual increase in S agency in a scaffolded process
-
That is so cool, Angelee. How did it go?
-
Hi Bryn! Sounds great! That's why I didn't want to miss it even though I can't fully commit like I'd like to!
-
check out the new on . Great resources online for it too
-
Q3 on it's way. Loving the sharing of both lessons, ideas and resources. tweeps are amazing!
-
Thanks Petra! Will look into it!
-
Hey guess we are both late to the
Will lurk n' learn to catch-up
-
Q3: If you used textbooks in the past, are you using the same one for the new curric? How are you adapting?
-
-
A2 has cohorts of Chromebooks: I share 1 cart of 15 with a colleague. Every student has a district Google Classroom acct.
-
Love that idea: Could be a new movement.
-
other apps I like include Swifty and of course what share
-
Thanks for Jann! Looks great!
-
I tried! Dinner ran late...better late than never!
-
A2. Got plenty of reading ranging from Creative Mindset to Mathematical Mindset. Ss get it. System/adults need to figure it out.
-
A3 No textbooks in K, so I'm sitting this question out. 😊
-
That's pretty good. I will need some more time looking through this. Thanks.
-
Great educators sharing well-tested successful ideas. Magic happening here tonight. Make sure to follow eachother & build your PLN
-
a major highlight of the year. We did +/- games we later changed them to mult. Lots of learning for both me and Ss
-
A2: Grid Algebra (I'm doing it without software) is making great progress in S comprehension/skills https://t.co/p5ZeOx7qHd
-
A3: another advantage to no textbooks in : can adjust to true learning as it happens!
-
Nice one. https://t.co/ds5aiX3C4V
-
-
I'm experimenting w/ two-stage test (individual + group) + math fair this yr! Want to focus on communication!
-
A3 some resources from our book room will be used but just reframed by beginning w/ S Qs then guiding them to particular books
-
We hope you’re enjoying the chat tonight! Remember, we chat every Sunday at 7 pm PST!
-
Not to worry, it's be a fast q. Hoping there's more out there than textbooks.... (and I love sitting in K classes)
-
-
-
Thanks, Trevor. What level would that be?
-
We have an online TB called Stemscopes but only used as reference tool. I focus on self discovery & Ss driven research
-
A3 I haven't used a formal textbook in a long time & it saddens me when my own kids bring home same texts I used in 8-12 as S & T
-
You're welcome . That's what is all about sharing & collaborating to make education better!
-
And this would be why I come here, tks for sharing!
-
Cool. I will need to look into this. Sounds amazing.
-
Yup.....I may have used this as a leading question to move away from textbooks.....
-
no texts but any program highlights for Ks? Animated alphabet & jolly phonics? New ideas?
-
-
Hi missed the question ...telephone then doorbell rang...
-
-
I think hands on learning & using labs & science articles more effective then a TB. Digital tools lead & do not give answs
-
That's okay. It was on text books and I will move to Q4 very soon.
-
I was just thinking similar when reflecting on Patterns of Civilization segment on Charlemagne vs Wikipedia
-
Q2 ELA was transformed in '07, so new curric is not so new. Colleagues and I use our own selections of short stories and poems.
-
. our most common foods textbook is from 1975. Almost predates me
-
-
Hate to 'like' this comment but will reply because it is so symptomatic of an engrained culture. It is sad statement
-
And if it doesn't. Learn from it and make it better. Endure the implementation dip. You can do it. https://t.co/iF3WPpk5EM
-
-
Doing my first two-stage test w/ Math 8 this Thursday. Fingers crossed that everything will go as planned ;)
-
I'd love to use LEGO in the classroom too. What would you suggest as a starter?
-
Also LOVE Handwriting Without Tears series.
-
That is crazy. Reminds me of a science 9 tb I used in late 90's had the promise of the space shuttle...
-
Good to recognize that there is a 'dip' when anything new comes along. Makes change safer and less scary for all.
-
-
Q4: Please share the different ways you will be communicating student learning with the revised curriculum.
-
-
have you used CFullerton's The Big 4 to assess Ss' levels of understanding?
-
-
A3. Good question. Not in classroom right now but would really reconsider use and evaluation.
-
Q4 is looking at the ways we communicate what the students are learning.
-
Q4: Please share the different ways you will be communicating student learning with the revised curriculum.
-
A3 - switched away from textbooks 4 years ago and cannot imagine going back.
-
Yes. Even universities have LONG adopted the collections of more up to date journal articles
-
2 approaches I use for intros: self regulation tool
& part of centres for exploration
-
Love it. What area do you teach? grade level? must be freeing to not be tied to a textbook.
-
Good think I had already eaten.
-
A2: FNESC for embedding Aboriginal worldviews and FPPOL; Harvard's Project Zero for cultures of thinking is also helpful.
-
lego animation also amazing too!
-
-
A4: love using to communicate ongoing S learning and give feedback for revision
-
I always called that "stop handwriting and just print/type" -but right tool for each user! My teen rebel uses cursive
-
The odd part is that it could be a great tool, if used beyond.....
-
space shuttle? How retro! 😜
-
A4: hoping to use FreshGrade to communicate student learning this year
-
I don't know Showbie. How does it work?
-
You rock it https://t.co/wNlKHT7zjN
-
-
That's true. Chances are it won't be perfect 1st time. Got advice from a UBC prof I learned it from. Still hope it goes well!
-
It's only a problem when the textbook becomes the curriculum
-
. hmmm, that's got the makings of a cool project! Mind is spinning, stomach is scared
-
Tonight’s topic was suggested by YOU, ! Please stop by our website to suggest topics for upcoming chats: https://t.co/apNWRbqItJ
-
A4 great Q. All of my Ss blog as a means to share learning and connect with an audience. I also use SM and my PLN to share
-
It was very exciting.....(thinking we're moving into a again....don't tell
-
A4: conferencing with students & parents in the room together. Powerful!
-
So true. New curric needs to focus on why/how more than what.
-
-
A4: I like the ideas of a Celebration of Learning and Student-Led Conferencing
-
-
Boom! Jann knows! https://t.co/Dkn7CrTeQR
-
-
wonder about the dangers of using textbooks w thinking that THEY are curriculum, as opposed to they support curriculum
-
spam. Looks so horrid. Tastes sooooo goood! And so many options!
-
-
Q4 uses the CIMS portal, so outcomes can be communicated in real time. This can facilitate a mostly numberless classroom.
-
-
You, Mr. Mah, are so good at these...>
-
textbooks are a tool to use, not the guide for teaching.
-
great to make learning public: authentic audience; beyond bulletin board & gradebook https://t.co/pV1485mVE0
-
-
A4 great Q. All of my Ss blog as a means to share learning and connect with an audience. I also use SM and my PLN to share
-
have seen more than a few Gr7 Ts use The Big 4 to guide teaching & grouping
-
Not bad for a lurker! :-)
-
How about a 70's themed ? :)
-
A4 uses the CIMS portal, so outcomes can be communicated in real time. This can facilitate a mostly numberless classroom.
-
Yes, but aren't we preaching to the choir ;)
-
I'm excited to be bringing to this year!
-
-
A4: having students share about what was meaningful to them, & setting goals together with parents vs. From the teacher only
-
A2 ELA was transformed in '07, so new curric is not so new. Colleagues and I use our own selections of short stories and poems.
-
Cool. What happens to parents/families without computer/internet access?
-
feedback tool w/ different platform options. Great annotation tools& communication classroom/home. https://t.co/k40zCRE8wV
-
and when there is only "a" resource being used. ok when worksheets & texts are once in awhiles
-
Q5 coming up....looking at the core competencies and how we could incorporate that..>
-
Although, I've revisited some from the 70's/80's that didn't have a wide enough voice then. Some gems
-
Visits home, phone calls, letters home I love writing positive notes.
-
We'll be exploring self-assessment, both in Core Comp but also our goal. Is there a way to align & merge?
-
A4 ditto! Students sharing their learning w authentic audiences. Empowering Ss to articulate learning https://t.co/gY7ChLXf89
-
-
A4: I like the ideas of a Celebration of Learning and Student-Led Conferencing
-
Yes. There could be some great things hidden in there.
-
Good question. All reports can be downloaded as a .pdf and sent home. It's more a mindset shift to steady feedback.
-
A4 3 years ago & I started a eportfolios challenge hoping efolios replace RCs before my oldest grads. Gonna be close!
-
love this idea. We have students teaching concepts for other students thru video & put on website to help others
-
Thank you for letting me chat with you all tonight! But off to bed it is late here. lots of amazing ideas.
-
A4. Would love to be using in HS math classes. Used "videotapes" in the day. This is do much better.
-
Love those positive calls and notes.
-
Thank you for awesome questions. Have a great week!
-
So it helps with the creation of a more consistent feedback?
-
Q5: What examples of integrating the core competencies are you planning trying this year?
-
Q5: What examples of integrating the core competencies are you planning trying this year?
-
Posed Q to staff about aligning CC and our student self-assessment. Let's see what we come up with!
-
I already make my students listen to Earth, Wind, and Fire, so this is right up my alley! https://t.co/eNMRXwREGl
-
-
How about a 70's themed ? :)
-
Ts have competencies visible in classrooms & Ss reflect on their thinking, communication, social prior to end of term
-
focus on big ideas as guideposts definitely a confirmation of importance of competencies though
-
Sadly. Policy says that recommended learning resources need to cover curriculum 100%. It happens. https://t.co/bFtk3VCJKy
-
A5: adding more 'story' elements for problem-based learning in ; getting Ss to pose their own Qs from provocations
-
Sorry a little delay- any SD in BC can request a visit from me to support use of digital classroom (1 of 2)
-
Feedback is crucial for student & teacher growth. I ask my Ss for FB all the time that helps me reflect & improve
-
-
Does this happen in all the classrooms? How does it look through grades?(Gr8 to have you here, Jonathan)
-
A5 The biggest part = dedicating REAL time for reflection.
-
also, had a staff social on Friday, and I had to say: "Enough about Mr. Sclater!" Didn't work, though.
-
A5 emphasizing communicating, collaboration and creativity through my teaching time in library (not just story & book exchange)
-
A5: trying out math journals this year as a way for Ss to show math thinking. 1 entry in and already impressed by my Ss
-
ideas that are visible tend to spread quickly. Yes in at least one classroom in every team
-
Don’t forget to use the hashtag throughout the week to keep the conversation going!
-
It was fabulous when visited - a great resource!! https://t.co/RcslYcefY1
-
-
Sorry a little delay- any SD in BC can request a visit from me to support use of digital classroom (1 of 2)
-
Trying to give more wait time for Ss when another S contributes an idea. Delaying my responses so Ss can think.
-
Agreed
Where/when can Ss self-assess his/her stretch&strengths wrt Core Comp profiles?
https://t.co/OQqS7q2zwr
-
-
A5 The biggest part = dedicating REAL time for reflection.
-
A5. Ensuring that all classes/lessons exercise & have opportunity to use & develop core competencies. Changes what I do.
-
. took the words out of my mouth!! Reflect, share, repeat
-
Okay....there are positives about the changes, but we need some help with the obstacles....Q5 coming up:
-
A4: incorporating more student voice in assessment, self reflection, end of term interviews.
-
-
Q6: What are the obstacles you have seen in this year? How did you/might you overcome these?
-
Or the MakerEd: Think, Make, Improve
-
This year has incorporated Flex Time with 7 lessons for the beginning of the year that focus on the competencies.
-
A5 tons of connections b/w core comp. & curricular comp. Ss self assessment using 'I can statements' will be focus.
-
Yes....Q6, I'm in the dark and missed the number (I'll give up my math card......)
-
There's always enough time, money and energy to what we decide is truly important
-
What are we doing here then? We need to be put there. Recruiting. Belong to the choir.
-
has been having great 'maker' & design thinking threads lately
-
A5 has just incorporated Flex Time with 7 lessons (for the beginning of the year) that focus on the competencies.
-
journal time to charts. Left side shows work, right side write to explain w/out numbers. Ss discuss different ways to solve.
-
yes!! Aim to do this for my iep mtgs, help develop student self-advocacy
-
-
A6 already had a T say "I do my thing and find ways to have the curriculum fit" –worked w old LOs but this new stuff is different
-
A6 largest obstacle...smoothening the transition for Ss. Having more agency over learning will bra challenge for some
-
who was involved in the design of the lessons?
-
Easiest solution was turning on the light.....Hopefully, that's a growth mindset!
-
-
-
sometimes it's late at night! Sometimes into weekend! Excuse not to edit too much!
-
what policy are you referring to?
-
A6 Not raising my hand to spread myself even more thin
-
A6: there are so many profiles in each competency. Focus on a few that are relevant to what is happening. Meaningful work!
-
A6 Helping colleagues discover where their style fits on the spectrum of the new senior ELA curriculum, and learning from that.
-
A6: Biggest obstacle is support that I'm trying to give to my teachers. Difficult as I don't know what they need.
-
This has a lot of potential. I also make Ss write solutions for other Ss to explain, greater accountability/clarity
-
Have Ss track learning and willingness to reassess on own. Working on accountability. https://t.co/erOBtbOLeh
-
-
Q6: What are the obstacles you have seen in this year? How did you/might you overcome these?
-
-
A6 I worry biggest obstacle is going to be "closed doors" instead of willingness to share successes and oopses along the way
-
specifically the competencies (If no prev focus on metacognition)
-
A6. 1st obstacle would be looking at curriculum too much at once. 2nd, being isolated from learning. 3rd, making mistakes.
-
Definitely. Need to see those mistakes as learning opportunities for all. Especially if we are sharing our journeys.
-
excited in our k-8 school w have intro & jr bands, choir, jazz combo & guitar (I play the in my library)
-
Exactly: Need to open up, share and expect mistakes, but learn from them. https://t.co/TzewvHYNXh
-
-
A6. 1st obstacle would be looking at curriculum too much at once. 2nd, being isolated from learning. 3rd, making mistakes.
-
Ss wrk together to solve problems & be respectful in correcting wrong answers. Ss must decide which one is correct & why.
-
Final Q coming up (I've given up on trying to say which one.....apparently my math skills are lacking this evening.
-
Q7:What type of support have you had to prepare for the revised curric? From teachers, school, district? What support do you need?
-
Follow the people you have met in this chat - you will find they are the resource.
-
And I like creating math world problems where Ss are in the story. :)
-
Q7:What type of support have you had to prepare for the revised curric? From teachers, school, district? What support do you need?
-
A7: Ongoing. Has to be consistent support. We do this to support Ss learning. Need to do this for us.
-
-
A7: has had curric implementation days with conferences at 3 sites blending elem/sec/support. District mentors +more
-
A7: Lots of teacher collab time is needed and I try to keep supporting this for my staff. Need some ideas on moving forward.
-
great opportunity to teach kids to celebrate mistakes, 'fail better' when trying something new
-
How are the CID's working? Very teacher-led, I assume, but enough buy-in?
-
A7 I've found new curric mentors at Montessori schools (miles ahead from others), if your SD has one, introduce yourself +network
-
A7 hard Q. Love the ministry vids & docs. Collab time has been powerful. Next step, long term collab inquiry needed
-
So excited to have & in on Fri to remind us to focus on learner (Lynne Miller tomorrow)
-
Great advice, Scott. https://t.co/4PWZgbdfZy
-
-
A7 I've found new curric mentors at Montessori schools (miles ahead from others), if your SD has one, introduce yourself +network
-
-
A7: 2 added Curric. Days last year gave a good opportunity to collab with colleagues in similar grades from other schools
-
Thank you for joining tonight!
-
Teacher leaders meet, break it down, then facilitate very interactive sessions,
-
I go into classrooms every day (usually the morning, after recess and lunch) to see kids and teachers do their thing
-
What type of questions do you ask Ss to answer in their math journals?
-
Please join next Sept 24 PST to discuss the New Communicating Learning reporting Order with and
-
Thank you all for joining in tonight. I always learn so much from these Sunday nights and appreciate the sharing!
-
-
No question... totally support making mistakes and learning from them. Need leadership to endorse this. https://t.co/vBhEHEgaIK

great opportunity to teach kids to celebrate mistakes, 'fail better' when trying something new
