Hi Barbara! How are you? Hope all is well, my friend!

A1 We made a March Madness-style "Bracket of Awesomeness" so kids could showcase their fave things and decide an ultimate winner
A1: group activity on team work. All team members have to get across(some blind folded). Hilarious to watch 5th graders do this.

A1 We have on deck for Thursday.

Wow, that one WAS funny, reminded of the "said no student ever" memes!
A1) Testing out various ways to protect land from erosion by creating model tsunamis
A1 My staff created mousetraps to capture a Kangaroo!
I love seeing student-created memes. They're so much better at it than I am. :)
A1: I play music before announcements on a daily basis and the kids have fun dancing and singing.
A1, another thing the kids loved was recording themselves working through tongue twisters for the start of National Poetry Mo.
ANYTHING! All we offered was suggested categories and a bracket. This preceded our dystopian/utopian unit
A1 Google slides w animations to teach economics concepts, 4 vocabulary & 4 vocab too! loads of laughs!
you're brilliant. I just decided.
Any suggestions on getting started with this? Apps to recommend?
will love hearing that Knikole, we have been using in & it rocks!
Great idea! https://t.co/HjFnDxat69
A1, another thing the kids loved was recording themselves working through tongue twisters for the start of National Poetry Mo.
Thanks, Kristen! It's nice to "meet" you!
we did that and then transfer it to our
Would you care to share those memes? They might be a lot of fun. Me and have a meme project on
We do this books. Ss love it.
Hi! Stacey, librarian from upstate NY with a love for teachers, librarians and authors from Texas swayed by
watching Planet Earth & rooting for the Caribou w everyone was fun. Also tragic. But fun.
We do this too! It's powerful and engagement is 100 %! My ELLS really shine! https://t.co/r3pWdY6ndc
A1) Using seesaw during our accountable talk circles.
Kermit, Yoda, Me....we're dapper dudes. :)
Love "meeting" fellow educators on this chat!
I just searched meme maker on the App Store and found the first free one
My kiddos are facilitating session conference next month. Excited!
A1 app smash vocabulary always seems to be a favorite!
A2: Play is more engaging & therefore a more memorable experience for Ss. Play ='s laughter & smiles & I like that!
A2. Kids learn better and more thru play than most anything else. It's collaborative.
A1 Subbed in different kinder classes & play ruled In the other an outdoor day 2celebrate Purim holiday https://t.co/3gBKvkZZem
I did this with books last year and Ss liked it. Think your idea would spur more passion. :D
A1b) Also made book talk videos & projects about inventors
Hello - checking in for a little -
A2: Play often gives time for student problem solving
Apparently I got suckered by the fake Q1 and missed the real one altogether...LOL
rooting for the herbivores will sometimes end badly.
A2 Play makes anything fun. I play at work every single chance I get.
Play combines social and emotional learning
A2: We play w. history on Scav. Hunts & Kahoot, Civil War Tech, & Going on Expeditions with L & Clark. We'll play tomorrow!
a very simple way is to use google slides. Upload the pic and then use text boxes to write the meme
A2: Play = learning. We learning not just the concept but how devise ways to learn that may not be the most direct.
I'll share the link later from my website on how we did that.
Q2: Learning should not be boring. Play is a great tool to enhance learning, as long as it's not playing for the sake of playing
Love it, great way to get Ss looking at things differently when they can create a meme for topic!
Sounds really interesting. Im walking class to nearby quarry in few weeks to look at geological time https://t.co/IELIEjJiUQ
A1) Testing out various ways to protect land from erosion by creating model tsunamis
Well I did one myself and Harry Potter won! I was surprised but I realized how much I loved it.Priorities!
A2 play is the basis of how everyone learns. It is also the cornerstone of several learning theories
A2: "Play" is when creativity emerges.
A2 The value of “play” is significant, especially for my Ss Next year I look forward to gamifying instruction as much as possible
A2: The value of play for me as an educator is that it makes teaching WAAYYY more fun!
A1 we read this rhyming Mockingbird Nominee that has a PLOT TWIST, had everyone baffled, then giggling. https://t.co/OjkmiJmMlB
had game day after STAAR, memory with artworks. We also had a sing-a-long day the week before that was a big hit.
A2 When we play we evoke positive emotions therefore triggering our memory to kick in. It is the same for students.
A2 Play keeps us all engaged and provokes Sts to beg for more!!
A2: We all learn through play. It's a great outlet for connecting & emoting. It provides stress relief! https://t.co/9VdeUJrg1p
A1 Sowed a parent how to build a van der graaf generator so he could show his son how to make lightning. Physics rules :)
A2: I like going down to PE and playing Dodgeball with the kids...Survival of the fittest :)
A2 I find that Ss are more accepting of mistakes (their own & their peers) through play - learn great teambuilding skills.
Looking forward to that, Ryan! Thx!
That rocks, make sure to send us picks!
I thought that was a portfolio tool?
A2 Kids relate to fun experiences and therefore retain information from play.
I win the Internet tonight. Send the trophy fed ex, UPS usually leaves out in the rain
A2: helps build relationships and trust so higher learning mag occur!
A1: Play is AWESOME when we play in the 1840s unit & the Ss LOVE it! Cholera, Dysentery, ah! It's the best!
A2: Most meaningful learning starts as play. This doesn't go away when u become an adult. It is important 4 students & teachers!
I knew you'd have a great answer! https://t.co/7FbLqIbEBE
had game day after STAAR, memory with artworks. We also had a sing-a-long day the week before that was a big hit.
A2: Play allows for you to discover new things without fear. There is an expectation that things aren't suppose to be perfect
I ❤️ to see kids singing as they walk to class in the morning. It's my favorite part of the day!
"suckered into the fake question!" 😂😂😂😂 is sneaky!
A2: Play because learning sucks without the fun.
Did I mention this was the day after the STAAR Writing test? Thrilled with their level of enthusiasm!
A2: Play is so important! Our school is blessed to have an amazing coach who helps kids w/ organized play
Hello! Michelle K teacher, joining a bit late!
A2 I find that elementary Ts find playing more a natural part of school; is it still important in secondary grades?
A2- I think it allows you to see your kids be themselves and build relationships it makes me want to go to work in the morning
30 minutes of tabletop tennis in my hard-working classroom = getting to know each other as humans https://t.co/9dlp0jXuJB
For young children play is how they learn: socialize language math collaboration. Their deep understanding of their world
Oh WOWzah!! Best of Luck to her!!
A2 Playing provides low-pressure situations for students to engage in problem-solving and be creative
A2 When kids play they in turn work harder to figure out challenges. They will then "struggle" longer to find the answer.
A2: Think it is vital that kids/adults play & find humor/fun in what we are doing & learning!
A2: And sometimes play is...well...just play and that's okay. But it's also a great brain break, too, no matter how old you are.
It is! However it has options to record, video, upload PDFs, commenting, and responding to text!
https://t.co/dDNmGEl1Pl
A2 Playing provides low-pressure situations for students to engage in problem-solving and be creative
A2 Just look in their eyes when they r playing in the classroom. They are engaged, passionate, ready 2learn! & the learning sticks!
Ah, yes, Plant Earth: From Pole to Pole never grows old.
Hi Stuart from Auckland, New Zealand.
Hi Stuart from Auckland, New Zealand.
A2 I heard the opposite of play is depression. Who wants depressed kids. So there's that.
A2+1 After spending time on this weekend, my kiddos at home & wk are getting a Maker Lab asap! Play is so important!
A2 Play brings imagination and critical thinking. It is fun & create together!
I am trying to think of an ecosystem where they are the end of the food chain...
We tend 2 forget that when we reach the adult stage. Love when adult learners jump at the chance 2 play n learn
A2Play allows practice in communication, problem solving, building relationships, building social & emotional intelligence & fun
It keeps us young and motivated: Ts & Sts! https://t.co/Q9cg3MB8oA
A2: Most meaningful learning starts as play. This doesn't go away when u become an adult. It is important 4 students & teachers!
Let's face it, some of us know fun and can make it from anything. Others have to work hard at it.
A2 I just ordered a kit to use with my Ts. Hopefully they will see the value of play with their Ss in the classroom
So true Faige, play IS learning for kids (& for me too!)
A2 It is incredibly important to realize that play evolved as a learning mechanism.
A2: Play is the opportunity to explore and invent as you go. Give Ss the toys of your class and let them create the game
A2 Play is why I love my job! If I don't enjoy it, would they? Make play apart of your teaching practice & you'll all enjoy it
wow. There are some decent rocks. We mainly found lots of granite.
A2)Love observe Ss at play, helps me to understand their way of thinking, interests, problem solving, creativity, social skill
Q2: play is important bc Ss don't know that they are learning! Bait & switch technique!
Great idea! Need to start doing this w/ more things we think are good for Ss. Start by letting Ts PLAY! https://t.co/AJTmUlKHDZ
A2 I just ordered a kit to use with my Ts. Hopefully they will see the value of play with their Ss in the classroom
Allows for lowered affective filter and transparency.
I think there is a fine balance here. Growth mindset kids are all over this. Fixed mindset kids have give up. :/
A2.b We should employ, constructively, it throughout the learning experience.
Joining late- NE Houston teacher joining in! A2: helps us all take silly breaks between rotations and
A2: Play is how I approach life. Enjoy life, work, school, learning, & time together.Laugh + play to balance out the darker times
A2. The value of play for Ss and Ts... a chance to take-risks, experiment, and collaborate... oh wait... and have fun doing it.
A2...again...lol Our STAAR review allows an hour of play each day too. Gives us all something to look forward to.
A2: The fear of losing control and not following the script to pass the test.
The value of play? Who ever learned ANYTHING when BORED? Play begs for ur attention, your focus, opens ur mind to possibilities.
A2: Play allows us to work out ideas and concepts ina stress free way that allows us to test out idea and learn
A1 Most fun making wevideos and bitmojis and these are seniors LOL.
A3 teachers and admins have a hard time figuring out how to assess play
A3: The only factor is time...Can you really do ALL that you want in "play" and utilize the time in the classroom
A2: Play builds social skills, problem solving skills, physical development, creativity, curiosity.....
A2 Play creates Purpose In the mind of an adolescent. They don't automatically buy-in unless there is a relevant purpose
A3 no one ever gave them "permission". That's where your book and come to play (see what I did there?)
A3: Play is hard to measure & we are a profession that can get too caught up in measuring...
A2. Because play is what keeps motivation to learn. Think about software you've learnt. Usually through play
A2 With play they can explore, problem solve, develop skills that they can use later in life.
A must to promote growth in all areas of Sts and Ts lives! https://t.co/nkg5bWvZRD
A2 Just look in their eyes when they r playing in the classroom. They are engaged, passionate, ready 2learn! & the learning sticks!
A2 play is naturally engaging and students collaborate which allows for learning tolerance and varied perspectives.
A2. Amazing what Ss will do when they play they won't do with other activities.
A2.c Play doesn't have to mean games, but can be joyful exploration and exploration.
Misconception that all play is "down time".....
A3 Fear that administration doesn't feel the same about play.
Do you ever make it explicit that they ARE learning? Debrief at the end or anything?
A3 - Afraid they won't 'cover' the curriculum, over-emphasis on standardized testing
Ss expect learning to be boring and hard. That's why it's important to play
A3: It's easy for the play aspect to get out of control and sometimes cause you to miss the teachable moment.
A3: Unfortunately, think that some see play as "wasted time" that they might spend on covering content. Not the case!
A3 Playing takes + time and planning. Thinking outside of the box is easy for some but difficult for others.
Q3 Lack of time. I'm not saying we never have the time. I'm saying we think we never have enough time. Perception is reality? 🤔
Love Minute-to-Win-It challenges in the library! Need to pull out some of the one I have ready to go!
as an adult I get bored, I DESPISE being bored, I am empathetic to my children when planning a lesson because I feel their pain.
Joining late- NE Houston T A2: helps us take silly breaks between rotations & Ss like 2 make games 4 us try 4 review
A2: With my ADD - my brain needs to play just like the kids. If I'm bored, they're bored and vice versa https://t.co/KFSDSxpRUT
A3: extra planning that goes into making lessons fun. It's way easier to print out a worksheet.
We have used them in our school love it! Great purchase
A2. I play all the time with my Ss. We may not officially call it "play" Just by making things fun, Ss get excited to learn
A3 Ts & Admin fear the STAAR monster. Allowing Ts & Ss to be creative & play will help scores. It's a win/win.
a3 there is a sadness that Play can't be rigorous learning. Sometimes "learning" is in a box of written/reading word
3. "play" doesn't look like traditional learning. That's why many are hesitant to use it.
For all of us And we get to decide what it means. Kids need time & space https://t.co/GcD2zUhsFP
So true Faige, play IS learning for kids (& for me too!)
A3: play by definition allows for the unstructured unknown. We are afraid to lose control or not be able to guide to resolution
Would love to know which ones you've tried that work well.
A2 Most natural and instinctive form of learning IMO
A2: Play makes good memories so that when things get tough, you have that banked
I'll bet you do a lot of brain breaks & fun things w/your learners Ro!
Great post, no student clock-watches when they're same with adults.
A3: I still don't feel like we have enough time. is great, but SEPs are not about playing. I need to get creative, build it
A3 Many Ts are afraid. We have to change admin's attitude about play so Ts will feel secure using it with Ss
A3 Feel like we have to work through the curriculum and don't have time.
How can play be integrated in ? https://t.co/xnopDCOTWK
A2 With play they can explore, problem solve, develop skills that they can use later in life.
3A) Some Ts do not see the value, they don't think Ss are learning/problem solving, you know "don't smile/have fun before Dec."
I am like a you Matt Damon
A3 I think of many AP friends who insist that there's no way their Ss can learn from a game...it all has to be 90 min lectures.
A3 personally, this is a classroom culture issue. We come to school to WORK, is it fun? Heck yea! Is our play fun AND work? YES!
A3 It's a matter of taking a risk! Do we bore them, or do we allow them to thrive through authentic engagement?
Great point. Look how has struggled to be accepted.
A3 too many standards - not enough time - fear of failure - fear of things going wrong
young Matt Damon. Stupid thumbs
A3: How many Ts complain when "play" is introduced during a PD? Is how it's done or the fact that we feel off task?
We have retrain ourselves to see play as vauable. Think back to how powerful it was for us when we were Ss.
A4: One has to look closer or think harder about the ed value play. Teachers are afraid b/c play isn't necessarily "encouraged."
As an admin, I'm OK with it as long as learning happens. https://t.co/ndJmq7OuFu
A3 Many Ts are afraid. We have to change admin's attitude about play so Ts will feel secure using it with Ss
I agree, no bored student is going to learn then apply long-term IMO.
and how silly is that because kids remember the happy fun silly stuff- it's what Ss share when they visit past Ts
A3- Barriers = space, time, + stringent standards. Have to "think outside of box" to incorporate play, fun, laughter + adventure.
A3: Creativity takes time and time is a precious commodity in the educations business.
A3: I play all the time. I often get scolded by my students because I'm "get off task" W/E I'm getting smarter shhh (j/k)
Asked my Ss to make my room more interactive and playful. This is what they did!
play=possibility https://t.co/OXkG3wqkfB
A3: classroom mgt is often an issue for new Ts the key is to structure the play so everyone is on task
A3b- It makes me sad to hear someone say "their class is fun but not sure what learning is happening." I learn best when I enjoy
A3 one Roadblock is lack of the feeling of Control of student behavior. If kids can play then they play around & can get rowdy.
Authentic engagement ~ YES! Fun {play} is our first-class ticket to engagement.
A3: may sound odd, but play takes structure, time, organization by T before bringing in the Ss
A3: Inertia…from both Ts and Ss. Comfortable to assign/fill out worksheets. Can be a difficult paradigm to break
A3-Many Ts feel they are the one in control of learning instead of seeing themselves as helping students find their own answer.
Great post. I think we all do and the learning is often more embedded.
A3 for play to happen, we have to be willing to give up some of the control and hand it to the L's. That can be scary 4 some
A3 We stereotype play as immature and unprofessional. Where we should both utilize it and practice it.
A3 Not enough time in the day; too many pressures on Ts.
I agree. Ts need to cede control and the student will learn more and longer and in a more enjoyable way.
Yes! It is often more work, but the benefits are amazing.
I'm sure you can offer some options to this https://t.co/kygsd5kZSg
A3 I think of many AP friends who insist that there's no way their Ss can learn from a game...it all has to be 90 min lectures.
No debriefing. I let them figure out for themselves. My kids own their learning through play.
Used to hear that alot but not so much anymore. https://t.co/zipnzoYnLJ
3A) Some Ts do not see the value, they don't think Ss are learning/problem solving, you know "don't smile/have fun before Dec."
A3: HS Ss don't always play along - "too cool for school". Takes the fun out of fun. Happend this year & made me want to stop.
Maybe that's the answer to the Q that I posed in my A3.When we're in a PD session we want to disengage if possible.
A3. Continued. There is some level of risk and unpredictability with PLAY in the classroom. Cannot control the outcomes. Messy.
Always my philosophy when planning. I try to infuse a lot of me into lessons & allow Ss to do same. https://t.co/1hKrXAiLod
A2: With my ADD - my brain needs to play just like the kids. If I'm bored, they're bored and vice versa https://t.co/KFSDSxpRUT
so true! https://t.co/fc8rlDWAY0
A3 for play to happen, we have to be willing to give up some of the control and hand it to the L's. That can be scary 4 some
No smile until Dec. brings about a non-emotional attachment: danger zone! https://t.co/dsSWvwEcwb
3A) Some Ts do not see the value, they don't think Ss are learning/problem solving, you know "don't smile/have fun before Dec."
A few of you have said this; what are some keys to classroom management when it comes to play? https://t.co/valQAPnGce
A3 one Roadblock is lack of the feeling of Control of student behavior. If kids can play then they play around & can get rowdy.
A3. Administrators who tell you that you are wasting time
Not seen as valid and long-term effective strategy for learning by many school and some Ts.
A3 We have a culture where we expect schools to transition students from children into adults and wean them off of play, quickly.
Developing classroom norms - setting the expectations together.
otherwise who wants to attend? Uncheck to that!
I was kind of hoping you'd say that. Hard to let go and do that as a teacher. :)
A3 play means students explore and teachers have to relinquish being the center of knowledge https://t.co/Qv7KRJ6oCR
Absolutely, and when one barely has two spare minutes, it can get challenging to plan well. Stuck in rut https://t.co/6RHSSI4qPG
A3: may sound odd, but play takes structure, time, organization by T before bringing in the Ss
Sometimes brains can also pair up w "the fun person"....ask them how to make it more fun until you learn https://t.co/aNTMeJTdO1
A3: extra planning that goes into making lessons fun. It's way easier to print out a worksheet.
If it fails, Ts will feel insecure about trying again in many cases.
exactly and its hard when you do all that work and the kids say "this is stupid" it takes the T to be vulnerable
is one I'm still struggling with but see the value in https://t.co/xytsHubGSn
Great point. Look how has struggled to be accepted.
Setting the expectations of when to quiet down, how to move between activity to activity, have fun with them.
trust your students is the first key. When they are engaged that will stay on task
I love that you called your "little" beard a micro-beard!
Play = Student centered classrooms
A3: Teachers will complain play is messy or takes to much time, but I think many are actually afraid of the risks play invites.
Yes. I hear Ts say this so many times during PD sessions at the district...complain about interruption of content.
A3 Ts can also balk if there isnt a clear cut connection to standards. To create something that "looks like" work takes prep time
I agree. I try to bring play into each unit, usually build up games/activities over summer each year.
Yes, so true! Still think that quiet is only way learning can happen
It's my summer focus! A must for myself! I must be more comfortable with gamification!
A3: Old-school admin who wants "order." Plus - we're an old open concept school so you hear everything https://t.co/4iq6BVVdOs
Once rules are set, voice level, safe choices, etc. a brief visual or auditory reminder gets them back on-task.
Good point. Kahoot etc can be effective but must be "fit for purpose" e.g. mindcraft for societal understanding.
The next 2 questions will be about toys --
true! You have less discipline problems too!
A3 At yesterday I got the idea some Ts didn't think play/change was possible/doable. Teacher-Ed schools focus on other
Play and don't fit in a high stakes testing environment. Bummer!
Is ss able to complete the task and reflect on results.
if the game and play makes sense and is engaging there is normally less management problems. Boring games are a pain.
Very true, need to show value for many people to "get it"
A3 Fun & play are huge motivators in education-it also makes teaching so much more interesting! https://t.co/qZgzkBhV2H
Same here, some of my Ts use Kahoot brilliantly and same with Socrates.
Don't listen to naysayers and complainers! Listen to problem-solvers and risk takers to grow our Sts! https://t.co/Dcni1lPHHE
A3: How many Ts complain when "play" is introduced during a PD? Is how it's done or the fact that we feel off task?
A3: The good fortune of teaching a senior elective gives me the opportunity to experiment with the Ss
Hi Finally made a chat (thank you wet weather).
There is nothing wrong with organized chaos either.
Classroom management skills....
I've heard that before, to which I reply: make it better! Good to see what they come up with!
and are both so much fun for Ss, too!
Nice! It's why I fear the silent classroom, how can there be real learning and collaboration?
I call it chaos learning. I students in other rooms and in the hallway. Our classroom will not contain us
Hear hear https://t.co/5zAcyF8jir
Don't listen to naysayers and complainers! Listen to problem-solvers and risk takers to grow our Sts! https://t.co/Dcni1lPHHE
A3: How many Ts complain when "play" is introduced during a PD? Is how it's done or the fact that we feel off task?
One of my favorite terms! I love being in classes where it looks crazy, but you can sense the underlying organization.
Just did, looks cool. thanks for the share
That is a big one IMO. https://t.co/hXAXm3MhT9
A3 one Roadblock is lack of the feeling of Control of student behavior. If kids can play then they play around & can get rowdy.
is fun - but a tough mindset to win over those that didn’t use games as a learning tool
https://t.co/x3S0RUqDiN
is one I'm still struggling with but see the value in https://t.co/xytsHubGSn
Great point. Look how has struggled to be accepted.
Have found Ss love to have choices where they can "play" with what they are learning as well!
Found the key to engaging adolescents is to give them more autonomy than boundaries. Most Ss rise to that expectation
A2: But it's not about how LONG you play. Sometimes a even 30 seconds of silliness opens new doors to learning possibilities.
Seriously aren't student motivators important enough to stop and take notice of? A3
it's funny that same student usually is the first to ask to do it again
So true! important 2support them as they learn 2make play work in their classroom so they don't give up! https://t.co/02pGunNWga
A3: classroom mgt is often an issue for new Ts the key is to structure the play so everyone is on task
A4 example, instead of drawing 3 branches of govt, building representations of legis/exec/judic branches, explaining the design
Building Prompts? Explain more please?
Exactly class doesn't have to look like students sitting in desks quietly listening to the teacher
I have pinned a bunch of different games on my Fun & Games Pinterest board and tweak them to fit lessons
I am excited to see responses on this one. I JUST got my Lego wall base put up Friday.
classroom culture, clear expectations, work ethic. Like any game rule book, u start by explaining HOW you win, its by learning.
Ian - principal from BCs sunny shuswap - just got sucked into with a great pic of play! one of my favourite “tools”
So true, 10 minutes of student making bitmojis turned into some deep reflection about who my S were!
That's so meta - you could make a game of making the best game :)
A3: I am looking at my class playing during lunch. They are teaching each other many skills.
A4 as a tech coach I see all the elem units. Can see geography, social studies easily being a build as a hook
A4: Could easily convert HS-LS1s starting with "use a model" into Lego fun!
A4 any type of research writing - building a paper is no different than building with Legos in a sense
Our library is getting a LEGO wall, too. Can't wait!
A4 another example: building the steps leading to American Revolution; Boston Tea Party, Stamp Act, French/Indian War
Q4: I suppose writing. Students could create a story board, or we could build an amazing Millenium Falcon.
A3 loss of control + how to measure
LEGO prompts? Yay! I'm about 2 learn something new!
Have heard same, especially w/ , have to show value & explain return on investment w/some
A4 In English, they could build the setting from one of the studied poems!
A4 In English, they could build the setting from one of the studied poems!
its amazing what a collaborative culture comes out of tech/games/etc -competition vs game not each other https://t.co/KF829sT4og
A3: I am looking at my class playing during lunch. They are teaching each other many skills.
Sts ❤️crazy Ts who are willing to put themselves out there for them! They understand you ❤️ them. https://t.co/y5rquytJvZ
One of my favorite terms! I love being in classes where it looks crazy, but you can sense the underlying organization.
A4: Oh my…SLOPE in Alg 1! It would be easy to construct/visualize lines of different slopes Slope as steepness is a tough concept
A4: I'm thinking that legos could be an awesome building prompt in math class: geometry, fractions, the possibilities R endless!
A4: Steps for math. . Hummmm by wheels are turning
A4. Good question. Hmm... It would have to start with a good question. Something that provokes interest & wonder. Build w/ more Q
A4: We have a unit on hardware functions in a PC. We could build inner workings of a PC with Legos.
This is what you want to do in our library! https://t.co/udUqPxy0IW
Our library is getting a LEGO wall, too. Can't wait!
A4: newton's laws, earth/moon system, plate movements, potential/kinetic energy
How about a on any topic you choose built with Legos.
A4: Create a habitat, design a setting for a story, create an insect, make a 3D shape, create two objects one shorter...
A4: Building the steps of mitosis then explain and label the different parts? Is that Building Prompt?
A4 I'm blank, but I won't be soon.
a4 everything your students do should have a writing part that goes with it. Write about your journey to see growth
A4 we do a unit on disc golf perhaps building a model course with legos then building the course for real and playing outside
A4 In fiction in ELA, both characters and settings are constructed by authors. They could create these in their prewriting stage
Great stuff. Ts should teach how students learn and not vice versa. The playgrouns is the coolest "learning space"!
A4 Have them create a story setting and have them take it from there.
A4 many math concepts, models of homes and worship centers from different cultures for world history, models for science topics
...I've also seen Ts teach structures of poetry/parts of speech/punctuation using LEGO https://t.co/BsluLesHb3
A4 In English, they could build the setting from one of the studied poems!
A4 I could see building prompts being used in lots of ways in elem geometry & measurement
absolutely! Seen it w/ other things. Need to remember FAIL= First Attempt In Learning. https://t.co/Pwix0AMEMh
If it fails, Ts will feel insecure about trying again in many cases.
A4 it makes an abstract concept concrete! A must for comprehension!
A4geometry, measurement and probability. What would be the dis/advantage of Spanish missions being taller/shorter : daily life.
A4: I think the possibilities are endless for using Legos in classroom
Finding the learners who need to be challenges/presented with the skills and joy of play through sports. https://t.co/WomdpndEiY
That sounds AWESOME! How does that work?
A4: Better yet, I could put a box of legos out at the beg. of math class & ask Ss build their fav. math concept so far & explain.
A4 Response to literature, building/creative new stories, stop motion storytelling
A4: So many ways to tie creating into just about any content, think: element of a story, math concept, science example, etc
Love those--some great possibilities.
I'm not sure yet, but I'm SUPER excited to find out!
Q3:We teach, how we were taught. Ts feel it will become a mess. The administration won't understand
This! It is EVERYONE'S "job" to teach reading and writing. Yes! https://t.co/owC3uJxLpC
a4 everything your students do should have a writing part that goes with it. Write about your journey to see growth
A4 When kids create info graphics, why couldn't they be three dimensional?
A4 Constructing a Lego figure requires revisions & editing; right? How is that different from an authentic writing process?
A4: model of rhyme scheme in poetry study
In this regard, students learn to be survivors and thrivers in life and in edu.
There is truth in that IMO https://t.co/6lkkUmSsc1
A3: Teachers will complain play is messy or takes to much time, but I think many are actually afraid of the risks play invites.
the lesson I sat in on was using stations to show difference between haiku, free verse, iambic pent...a few others.
A4: Used Legos in 1stgrade w/animal research. Ss designed animals and habitats using legos. Another T used legos to make clouds
A4 Force and Motion questions. Create a structure that could withstand an earthquake, what made it so?
They love it when they build, then describe their creation to a partner, who tries to recreate or draw it!
There is such a thing as "productive noise" https://t.co/gpZ6jCY0go
Yes, so true! Still think that quiet is only way learning can happen
Using bricks to stand in for words, and then replace the bricks with words as Ss progress
When can I come to your classroom for that?
In that case, it involves more self-evaluation, right?
writing is in everything. You have to be able to explain what you are doing
Enjoy it 3D printing has a learning curve but it's a fantastic educational tool!
A4 I was on a team that won laptops for our school using Legos to tell the story of the Salem Witch Trials. Kids could do that ez
...and if you're a teacher looking to get started w LEGO, here are my recommended sets to start with https://t.co/QYXp51ZLbc
Lightbulb moment: I'm going 2 ask my Ss, & their families, 2 send in any legos they R not using & get started on this right away!
Also for the olders tudents, there's LEGO robotics!
Also for the olders tudents, there's LEGO robotics!
A4 take a map, create the Great Wall of China or the Berlin Wall. Try to get to the other side, how does it feel to be secluded?
All of my LEGO everything always have a written component. Sometimes just index card, but there.
I think you'll be surprised how many you'll get!
Would definitely show them the interdependence of the "three legs" of our government & that two can't stand alone!
you must have structure period!
Yep. A set of Legos would surely help my HS students work on this concept that eludes so many of them https://t.co/D3p373qv2g
A4: Teach patterns & structure of language-phonics. Show what u know or learned. Use visuals, puzzle-like pieces, drawings.
loved going to the Lego store and getting colour coded blocks to help w math fractions!
Man that sounds really cool!! I have only seen pics. https://t.co/5VM2C0Oi9O
I am excited to see responses on this one. I JUST got my Lego wall base put up Friday.
A4) Measurement, geometry (Math), build a replica of White house, the Pyramids (SS), make DNA strand, model of cell (sci)
Yes. Skills they will need as adults.
Our students are loving how allows the freeing of imagination.
Our students are loving how allows the freeing of imagination.
So if I change ":LEGOS" to Play-Doh then I am doing "Building Prompts"?
and here is Nathan's rec for Legos. Buy the refill kits for storystarter. Cheaper and more awesome pieces
I don't know! I tried that last year and got 1 Lego piece in 3 weeks. No one wanted to give theirs up...LOL!
A4 create a LEGO transportation device, explain to someone in the Wild West its advantage, trying to sell it to them.
"sculpting prompts"? (or eating, depending on your kids)
A5: we replace the cards in guess who game with classmates and play they love this
OMG! YES!! That's it! We should all do a Lego Drive! Perfect!
Our MS robotics classes use the lego robots in class. My office is next to their classroom and it is amazing!
That sounds really cool! Great idea. https://t.co/Cksj8siCpp
A4: Used Legos in 1stgrade w/animal research. Ss designed animals and habitats using legos. Another T used legos to make clouds
A5 the only answer anyone should answer is Minecraft and doughnuts
A4: My 2d class right now has to design a city that would be built in a small unrealistic area. In Art all Ss do is build
A5 A greenscreen and app lets students go anywhere and be ANYTHING!
for their next presentation, ask them to write a Kahoot to share with the class.
Ss use K'Nex to build roller coasters. Building to understand energy conversion. So much better than straight out of the book.
A5 social media options like Twitter/Instagram/snapchat while not "games" meet Ss where they are, let's embrace & model good use
A5: Ss always added game creation as one of the items on our choice boards for Ss to show knowledge/explain concept
A5 lego also works well for self-regulation - esp lego architecture - all white/clear blocks - not as “busy” as coloured blocks
LOL. I'd know where I'd be most of the time.
LOL. I'd know where I'd be most of the time.
A3 I'm using Legos in class now to teach concepts for coding with Java- it's a great building aid! https://t.co/UNO4zfqxE6
A5 American Dolls and toy soldiers have helped writers break the ice and create great pieces.
A5. Another good question... As secondary math teacher, I would always invite Ss into the world of math. The class was the game.
Pyramids are also a great engineering study - especially the iterative design of the step and bent Pyramids.
No one ever gets rid of Legos - I used to scrounge yard sales for them. I now just borrow my son's
A5 - I use comic books for that purpose - to allow students to see themselves in historical and contemporary events
A5: Our 10 graders just spent a day playing "Clue" to practice inference skills prior to a STAAR test.
A5: game class during advisory for enrichment is chess, cards, kickball, monopoly, checkers, connect four
Those are some great icebreakers...
A5: My students love playing Kahoot in class.

A5: Toys?! Oh Man! My 25 historical bobbleheads, Pez Dispensers, Lewis & Clark Compass, Abe Lincoln dolls & Legos, & "Teddy" bear
pokemon cards also good for math & patterns & sorting
I'm not a big fan of the instruction version, prefer freeplay and imagination,
DON'T ask PARENTS to donate their kid's Legos to you. That is a crime against humanity & Quinn & I will hunt you down
A5: allow Ss 2 help build & expand toys & games. Legos blocks play-dough crayons dolls -maker space. https://t.co/nLZ2zBCoj8
A5 if you're there with kids as they're playing the games, you see them open up more than a trad. classroom setting
A5: Ss love Kahoot quizzes. We build aquariums in my class and they love decorating them and designing with their peers
A5 Storytelling (to mold the context) + case study (simulation) + Few Rules
Thanks - have to excuse myself - have a great week!
Yes!! We do this w/3rd, 4th, 5th graders! So fun! https://t.co/DJ0OQ7TTue
Also for the olders tudents, there's LEGO robotics!
great idea!!! https://t.co/TXwbuVM3Fv
Lightbulb moment: I'm going 2 ask my Ss, & their families, 2 send in any legos they R not using & get started on this right away!
Also can be used with proportionality.
A5 Not games but they love playdoh, scratchjr, seesaw, the green screen, and choose them to "play" with all the time!
A5) Love to explore w/ tinker box, interested in building with items, cups, wooden sticks, enjoy too
i think you mean “graphic novels”…..😎 love sharing my comic books….
Cool, it's great how the students can progress!
Great for getting language learners to operate in multiple domains as well!
My classroom was silent this morning. It scared me!
A5: Heads Up is a great game to review for a test or reinforce concepts!
We started a LEGO robotics club this yr for 5th thru 8th graders. Was awesome! https://t.co/8isKbff1BU
Also for the olders tudents, there's LEGO robotics!
A5 Mario Kart with scooters in class and soft foam balls as the shells. Who doesn't like Mario Kart???
My sons have been involved in those -- love them!
I used to try to keep sets apart - dear son preferred dumping them all together to create.
A5: I also allow for the Ss to choose the output of their product to help them use their strengths to learn
Imagine how the student felt! LOL
A5: Ss love to take neon markers + black tables + stop motion video maker to show biology processes. They have fun with this.
A5 We used origami to learn to read informational text and good ole' Scrabble pieces to do vocabulary structural analysis
A5: our MS students get enrichment during advisory and many choose the game based classes to play classic board games
Hey , , & friends, join in 10 min! Topic: Teacher Voice & Blogging
I know! This was our 1st year and I'm totally hooked!
A5 the Apples to Apples game, concept anyway.Make cards 4 your content. In my rules, the person chooses "funniest" & "most clever"
Yes! I think it's great to get Ss involved in game selection. I would miss a lot of great ideas if I didn't.
A5 breaking out a 3D printing pen in upcoming library times. part of our centers/games/activities whatever
A5 breaking out a 3D printing pen in upcoming library times. part of our centers/games/activities whatever
Same here, my boys just want to build massive towers and yip then destroy then rebuild.
This would be a great question to ask 5th graders as a challenge & let them do the research! https://t.co/SrD9b2we72
A5, I think - is a fun "toy."
it wasn't through my doing. They all just went into their concentration zones and forgot to chat.
Ot's great when the Ts and Ss are cohesively having fun in the learning space.
Great idea! Inferencing is always a struggle for many.
A6: My Ts love using GoNoodle and move activities. Its fun!
I've never understood kids that just build the car on the box and then keep it that way
A6: We use kinesthetic movement for learning grammar rules.
A6 voting with their feet - looking around d and seeing where everyone stands
A6 Trashcan basketball can be used for just about anything!
A5: We have a still life project Ss pick personality things. Toys ALWAYS show up, the class always is more connected afterwords
Exactly! I used to find random Lego guys all over the house in various poses. :)
A5 plastic animals! Toddler Time we read Dear Zoo! For ea flap that reveals the animal, kids had a plastic 1 to put in the zoo.
A5 you people and your desks. The floor is our workspace
A6: Scavenger Hunts with the US Const, GO on the Lewis & Clark Expedition, MOVE West on the Oregon Trail, & Speakeasy Jazz dance
A6: Sometimes we just do stuff sitting on the tables. Change of venue makes it seem novel & maybe a little "forbidden"!
A5: Sidewalk art is another fav. I love watching other HS Ss walking into the school & trying to figure out all the pink chalk.
A6: I also use it for learning vocabulary!
Ensure some physical movement is part of every lesson otherwise not physically active can mean not learning active.
teachers worrying about students getting on task rather than the outcome of the lesson.
Same here, we have to rush to get a photo before the next big adventure starts!
A6 We use just dance on the Wii kids love it whole class dances and a couple kids get chosen each time for scoring.
A6: I play "Coke or Pepsi" with my Ss. They can use persuasive argument to get anyone "over" to their "side."
TPR - Total Physical Response.
A6 Motions for understanding compound and compound-complex sentences. I saw their little hands use gestures during wtg test!
Q6: I have Ss answering questions or choosing sides of a debate by going to a different corner. Quick way to assess, lots of mvt
A6 Have allowed Ss to go on angle scavenger hung throughout building during geo unit.
A6: I'm always looking for any reason whatsoever to get out of the building and go outside to measure things in real life.
As a TL, I've had great success having Ss act as books and create call numbers - they move about for shelf order.
A6: QR code scavenger hunts. Putting the answers throughout the school.
I did that once and used puzzles with them. Lots of fun!
A6: I do a “Cake Walk” in which students work the problem that they are nearest when the music stops.
I watched my 6 year old create something cool from Lego, by following the instructions. Great lesson in itself!
A6: So many, favorite = game played as class teams w/basketball hoop in our room. Ss shot/competed daily last 10 min
A6 There are so many lessons to be learned in our outside garden too.
Me toooooo. If there's a reason to go outside, take it! https://t.co/zabTP4gtMV
A6: I'm always looking for any reason whatsoever to get out of the building and go outside to measure things in real life.
A6: go noodle activities, 4 corners, gallery walk, teach teach trade, scavenger hunts in math, and so many more
LOL Sounds like me forever out of my office visiting classrooms.
LOL Sounds like me forever out of my office visiting classrooms.
A6: Photo scavenger hunt. Predator/Prey simulation.
I'm old enough to say I didn't have access to those kinds of LEGOS. I had to use my imagination. https://t.co/cAG55C0yzC
I've never understood kids that just build the car on the box and then keep it that way
A6) Ss love to dance, relay spelling games, sparkle, popcorn (jumping) review games, twister vocabulary
A5 Anything that allows them to design and create. My L's also like games with strategy involved.
A5: I tweet a lot, so I'll let kids take pictures with my phone and compose tweets. I check them 1st :) https://t.co/RYJwaIoUfU
A6a: Also I use QR codes to get students up and moving around. Visual Walkabouts too. Anything to move (controlled).
A6: Kin. w hand signals 2 6 syllable types. Ur body will remember what 2 do. How do u know how 2 walk? https://t.co/CJWJDrI11L
When we made Wi-Fi "beyond the gate", couldn't keep the Ts inside!
When we made Wi-Fi "beyond the gate", couldn't keep the Ts inside!
letting students feel completely comfortable in the class room and making it a fun learning environment for everyone.
Maybe "hunt"....brain and fingers are on different pages tonight. https://t.co/yqK2uHDVvH
A6 Have allowed Ss to go on angle scavenger hung throughout building during geo unit.
A5: We do a lot of brain-break dances ~ Bunny Hop, Chicken Dance, Hand Jive, Whip & Nae Nae. Ss thrive on movement & so do I.
We use A2A in reverse, purposely choosing the noun so they have to apply the best adjective instead Builds vocab
Never understood the fun of building what's on the box.
Q5 Ss love it when we play different versions of musical chairs, i.e.: musical books, musical places, etc https://t.co/xmSGLb3WBY
A6: Congo line review sessions. But must include ridiculous music, and Ss dancing.
Alright & Shutting down the computer tonight...Y'all take care!
A6 We use 's EDU version to create scavenger hunts for our Ss. Get's them moving around the building!
A6: Movement is so important! We , we play spelling game "Sparkle" which gets us out of our seats. We also just dance!
A6 Scavenger hunts. I love the Goosechase App...great for any content and so much fun!
Is that He-man or Thundercats pose?
A6: So many - Go Noodle is great, but also treasure hunts where there's movement, activities where they manipulate and move.
I was terrible about capturing moment so did same, had two reporters take photos/craft Tweet & then I hit send
A6 meaningful movement is so important. Check out this graphic via
A7 Take the class outside for a lesson and enjoy the beautiful spring weather!
Focus on the learning journey and not the outcome and remember they are just young and full of potential & play! A7
A7 we're building straw rockets and spaghetti water towers this week.
A6 my class has stability balls for seating & as a certified yoga teacher, we move a lot for breaks! Adults need the breaks too
Healthy Mind, Healthy Body
That sounds fantastic. :)
It's lunch break and there are 'ninjas' playing, silent ball happening (noisy) and play everywhere. It's wet weather lunch!
BAM!! LOVE THIS! And so do the kids!
https://t.co/YIB3776rzi
A7 Take the class outside for a lesson and enjoy the beautiful spring weather!
Never thought I would see Bunny Hop & Whip and Nae Nae in same sentence! So awesome!
A6 We use gonoodle for brain breaks, we do math scavenger hunts, make the shapes with their bodies. https://t.co/GYaTFj80cG
Please join us in thanking for hosting this week! What fun to PLAY!
A7 I need to bring it to the Ts I support first. Let Ts play, so they will recreate the same joy for their Ss.
A7 remember often play is a state of mind and look for ways to make learning fun and engaging https://t.co/eShhkB86pb
And the play helps them to realize that potential!
A7: Share in their joy, go down the slide with them, laugh with them. Tchrs can have fun too!
A6: Love, adopt, buy. Ss mark artwork with paper symbols and explain 1 favorite, 1 to work on & 1 to hang in the hallway
A7, I will be inviting Ss in to build on the Lego wall. We will be creating poetry and "playing" with that as well.
A6-Ss write proper syntax computer code on paper and pass to partner to "process" Usually it involves doing 1000 jumping jacks!
Wish we were having nice spring weather! We had snow yesterday.
A6:Ts like taking their classes to the library when we collaborate it gets them moving, different scenery. "like a field trip."
A6: we Have mini breaks with half sized pool noodles as swords can't hit above waist and battle only last30 sec
Great point and allows us to see our students in different learning contexts too.
A6 I can't help it, I. Must. Shout. It. GET RID OF CHAIRS & TRADITIONAL FURNITURE! THere, it's off my chest.
Thanks for moderating tonight. 1st time on this chat & learned a bunch. Thx all!
If any teacher is bored by their own class...they need to fix that. :)
A7 Take the students outside and have them set up an obstacle course teaching teamwork, building, and physical fitness.
A7 get out of the building for accountable book discussions! I use to do this, so I better get cracking!
Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow; don't we need a balance of all three? Sometimes Ss make up their own "tomorrow" dance!
A7: Drop everything and.......
Class outside? Get up and yoga? Movie time? ...
play war! I'm using place value cards instead of playing cards
have them move desks to sides of classrooms and open it up, makes them excited and motivated to learn. Innovation.
Have them practice dying from a sword fight - did that last year when teaching Shakespeare w/ 2-4 grdrs. Epic!
A7: I love that the have play days, but also just allowing Ss to become immersed in their own little worlds of play.
