CatholicEdChat is a twitter chat. Topics focus on discussions around educational issues for Catholic Educators and topics beneficial to Catholic Schools. We look forward to continuing to connect Catholic Educators online to discuss education and teaching with faith in our schools. The chat takes place on Saturday mornings. Time 9am EST.
Q2: for me it’s about movement. We are wrapping up our project over global and domestic terrorism. We’ve spent time in the class, library, and and outside as they film their news cast. #catholicedchat
A2: Definitely more projects than tests in class. A few service projects in school and in community. In general May is crazy busy throughout the school so true classtime is rare. #catholicedchat
Yeah. Never really stops. Two summer sessions then New Faculty Orientation on August 2-3. Student Orientation Aug. 8th. First day of school Aug. 9th. #catholicedchat
A2, to keep things fresh we do some fun “review” skill activities in reading and parts of speech “scoots”. I will attempt to make diagramming “fun” this week. #catholicedchat
Our last full day with students is June 27, June 28 we clean our classrooms and hand out report cards! Next year, after a lot of paperwork and meetings we we’ll be done June 13! At this time of year I try to do a lot of outdoor learning. #CatholicEdChat
A2 When I taught LA I would I teach bite-sized lessons rather than longer units, because of all the interruptions -- play rehearsals, 8th grade grad rehearsals, etc. So we studied poems, short stories, etc. rather than a novel. #catholicedchat
A2 With AP exams plus end of school energy it is hard to keep regular instruction going. Many special learning activities like Breakout Boxes, CSI labs, Maker Challenges, student presentations, intermural sports. #CatholicEdChat
A2 Anything arts and craftsy even in high school is always a hit. I had one class make movie posters-break out the crayons, markers and colored pencils! #catholicedchat

One thing I hate about this time of year is finding out who’s “leaving”, being “reassigned” etc. But then there are the promotions! Congrats to @EllenBurrola#catholicedchat

Today a teacher came by my office & said, “I’m having a tough time with a student & need your help.” I responded, “Course, how can I help? Convo? Call home? Other consequence?”
“Nope. Just remind me that I need to love him through it.”
Teachers, you amaze me.💛💯 #LoveWorks
A2: we stay consistent with our learning throughout the year so my strategies don’t change that way- but towards the end we def need more reminders than usual about what’s in the Constitution they mutually agreed upon lol #CatholicEdchat
Did they build their own or use one from the site? I would like to add a @breakoutEDU Looking for a good “end of year” elementary version. #CatholicEdChat

The idea is really taking off thanks to @BJPSLibrary. Hon World Civ students are creating their own this week after experiencing earlier in semester. Planning boxes in US History, English, Religion & Math #catholicedchat

Sorry #CatholicEdChat. I have to bow out early. Heading to a Girl Scout Mother’s Day brunch in a bit. Happy Mother’s Day to all of my twitter mom friends. Take some time to sit back and enjoy this weekend!
Little bit of both. Modify pre-made with specifics from individual class. Great cross-curricular collaboration opportunity. Both students & teachers kearn. #CatholicEdChat

Check this Board out on Pinterest!

A3. We just had our Teacher Appreciation Week lunch for teachers. Volunteers (& staff) do recess and games while teachers have 2 hour lunch in a nearby town. Lunch paid by parent club. It comes at a great time of year. #catholicedchat
Yes! #TeacherAppreciationWeek2018 really helped! Our parents and kids were so generous. It helped kick May off with positivity and gratitude. Also contagious. #catholicedchat
A3. Lending an ear. Supporting each other and offering to take classes, change schedules, etc. to accommodate grad practice, field day planning, etc. #CatholicEdChat
We are having classes team up to collect and paint rocks, with an emphasis on student responsibility, nurturing and leadership for the older kids in each group. Rocks will be used to create art for the school. #CatholicEdChat
A3: Had online Spanish students email a note of appreciation to their online teachers - they were overwhelmed - said they had never been thanked before! #CatholicEdchat
A3: what helps me most is reminders of deadlines. Sooo much paperwork due and I always loose track! Lucky I have a great partner teacher to keep me on track! #catholicedchat
Yes! And self-care reading, too! Treating myself to a David Sedaris book now which obviously will not be book talked to my 4th graders! Reading just for you = one of the greatest pleasures of life! #catholicedchat
A3 I have been struggling here...so stacked in hiring, scheduling, testing, planning, reporting, etc meetings that I find the day has ended & I’ve missed the school day. Wish I could be more available yo support teachers during day. #CatholicEdchat
A4 Pray! It’s a difficult time of year and we are all going through a lot. Last year at this time my husband was still in a SNF and this year is difficult for other reasons #catholicedchat
A4: Be encouraging. Collaborate when you can. Call out what is going well. Jump in to help when you can. Appreciate what they do for you. Sometimes it's just take the time to listen. #catholicedchat
A4: share, share, share! I’ve learned so much when I joined this community a year ago. The ability to bounce ideas off some of the best educators across the US has been a blessing #catholicedchat
A4. Continuing the tweets! I’ll be attending conferences, tweeking material, etc. and will post and hashtag anything that I think will benefit my #CatholicEdChat PLN
A4. Share. Each of our schools has special things that remind us why we educate. We had a puppet show yesterday. The kids were priceless. #catholicedchat
@GooseChaseEdu-like regular scavenger hunt-looking for things-but evidence is photographed, videoed, or answers are texted, or locations arrived at are geo-pointed. Possibilities are endless! #CatholicEdchat
Good for you! Looking fwd to hearing how that goes. I’m working on creating a more cohesive and efficient blended learning environment in my classes #CatholicEdChat
Good morning #catholicedchat friends! I’m so sorry I’ve been MIA lately! We had opening night for our musical yesterday that I directed, with 2 performances today!
A5... now is time to really focus on student-centered activities! Let them lead the activities. Tangible end product. And as many have mentioned...add movement! #woetothoselecturing#CatholicEdChat
Maintain structures that they feel secure even though we are doing things differently. Set expectations for activities and take time to listen to the kids. #CatholicEdChat
A5: I try to support my students by honoring their course load. I try to remind myself they have other finals, projects, test, etc when I build any assignment. I even build time in during this time of year for them to study for another class. #empathy#catholicedchat
A5 I like to see students reflect on the past year and create something to summarize what they've learned in some creative way - video, paper, collage, etc. #catholicedchat
Thanks to everyone who applied for our #NASASocial event for the upcoming launch! It was a tough choice, but we've chosen our attendees and invitations have been sent - so be sure to check your emails 📩 and RSVP. Apply to more NASA social events: https://t.co/QTKhydOgCN.
A5 (part2)... Adults also need to talk to each other - when are other classes testing or due dates of major assignments. Students (and adults) are overwhelmed w/ workload at end of term. Care for each other, plan carefully, be aware of assessment fatigue/stress #CatholicEdChat

A5. I’m trying to make sure I prepare my Ss for next yr. Starting summer reading lists. Trying to cover material 8th grd Ss should know for hugh school. Also doing projs to reflect material they have learned over yr #CatholicEdChat
A5: investing in meaningful routines all year. My kids RIOT if we miss independent reading and it’s mid May. I’m 100% sure they’ll be equally invested the last day bc it’s a routine we have that they deeply care about. #catholicedchat
Teachers keep a joint Google Calendar and ALL tests, projects, quizzes go on it so we don’t give two tests on the same day. Works great! #CatholicEdchat

We've used this for a few years. It works out great if everyone uses it. In case of a conflict, first one to post wins! #incentive It's great being a Google school - has simplified soooo much! #catholicedchat
Nice! We are trying to figure out a method to do at hs level. So many course, elective sequences etc ...our attempts have been unusable. #catholicedchat
A6 I always do an 8th grade lesson on how to use Google Takeout so they can keep all of their elementary work as they move on to high school. #catholicedchat
A6: One of our after-online-course-is-done activities: Use green screen video to see Ss in any world location having Spanish conversation about what they see. #CatholicEdchat
A6: this is usually when I break out the stop motion. It takes a loooong time that I don’t always have at the beginning of the year. But man is it good for collaboration, creativity, etc. #catholicedchat
A6 Our BioTech class does a full month CSI investigation. Faculty/staff are suspects. Brings whole school together. And we find out who amongst us is capable of *violence* #CatholicEdChat

A6. 6th grade is doing an art project of a person, place, or quote that they learned about this yr usng either a mosaic or illuminated maniscript (both of which medium comes from post-Western Roman Empire, which we are wrapping up now) #CatholicEdChat
A6: shared already it it’s a two part presentation over global and domestic terrorism. They turn in part two a paper the day of their final. Our final is non-traditional. We will have a different activity for each class that will take an hour to complete. #catholicedchat

A6. We take our exiting grade (6th) to West Bend Grotto. Then eat together as a group at this homey restaurant. Part of the fun is the 3 hrs total on the road. The day is about relationships. #catholicedchat
A6: Our 6th grade puts together ~20 stations for our 5th graders to rotate between one afternoon. How to succeed in middle school - from some real survivors! 6th feels like experts! 5th feels welcomed. Nice afternoon for all. #catholicedchat
We do but doesn’t have good calendar feature for assessment monitoring. I see our needs assessment as two steps... one, collecting data on number, frequency & type of assessments given. Second, what is *right* balance for our students. #catholicedchat
