The #TXLchat provides a forum for Texas librarians (but not limited to Texas librarians) to create collaborative connections, share educational resources, and foster life-long learning.
Welcome to tonight’s joint #mwlibchat & #txlchat! Tonight we will be focusing on the Framework for Learners as we chat. If you haven’t already, you may want to take a look at the new Framework: https://t.co/VtqXqIPDqa
Hi #mwlibchat and #txlchat!
I'm Ashley, elem teacher-librarian in Arkansas. Current @AAIMhome Chair-elect. Affiliate Assembly member & attended the Affiliate Assembly 1.5 day pre-conference #AASLstandards workshop.
Whoa...what a mouthful.
A1 we have state frameworks. Currently ina revision year. Fingers crossed we adopt the #AASLstandards as our own state standards i.e. NGSS.
#TxLChat#mwlibchat
A1 Arkansas has state library media and computer science standards. I use those to drive instruction since I teach both of those subjects. #mwlibchat#txlchat
Totes! I'm so excited that our frameworks are being revised. I'm hoping we'll include more 21st century skills and that they'll be aligned with the new AASL Frameworks #mwlibchat#txlchat
A1: I used the #AASL standards for my digital media class: https://t.co/bTUY82N1DZ. I didn’t have a curriculum so I created lessons based off AASL! #txlchat
What has that process been like? KY will review LMS standards and hopefully adopt something for the 2018-19 school year. Tips on how local or state LMS can help this process? #TxLChat
A2: For TLs, standards represent best practice, a framework for improvement & an opportunity for advocacy. They do require education for those outside our profession. #mwlibchat#txlchat
#mwlibchat#txlchat A2: I think it brings an awareness to our profession and what we can offer. Potential downsides if playing devil’s advocate-not all library situations are alike
A2: For TLs, standards represent best practice, a framework for improvement & an opportunity for advocacy. They do require education for those outside our profession. #mwlibchat#txlchat
A2 Pros - Universal to justify job Cons - State or district might feel cmte not needed to write specific standards for your Ss ≠ not spend the $$$ #mwlibchat#txLChat
A2: I 💜 having national standards b/c I know it’s created by the masters of the library world. Downfall is that campus leaders have no clue to the intricacies of the library, especially if they don’t see kids in there 24/7 like a classroom. #txlchat
Thanks @AshleyCooksey2 4 expressing very legitimate fear. So many standards/competencies... can lead 2 job description/performance confusion - not sure if/how "official" crosswalks help #txlchat#mwlibchat
#mwlibchat#txlchat A2: I think it brings an awareness to our profession and what we can offer. Potential downsides if playing devil’s advocate-not all library situations are alike
This is one of my favorite parts of the @aasl Standards book! For my evaluations as a LMS, the burden of proof is on me to show how I routinely meet the standards. Checklist is super helpful! #txlchat
Q3: The new @AASL Standards Framework center around 4 Domains: Think, Create, Share & Grow. How do these components currently fit into your practice as a Library Professional? #mwlibchat#txlchat#AASLstandards
A3: I like how these verbs touch a little bit of everything I do in the library, including goals. I'm curious to see how easily I can adapt. #txlchat#mwlibchat
A3
I think we, as school librarians, foster thinking, creating, sharing, and growing for our Ss. It's in the heart of what we do and why we do it. #mwlibchat#TxLChat
A3 I love how these verbs highlight behaviors that I want my students to exhibit. They're open to discovery learning and play to the creativity of my students rather than the cut and dry standards of old #mwlibchat#txlchat
A2 Con: Being overwhelmed trying to be perfect in all expectations on both AASL and state standards...even though there are so many similarities between the two. #mwlibchat#txlchat
A3 Do we also foster these alongside our classroom Ts/Specialists/Admins? I hope so! Best way 2 > impact is 2 influence practice of adults! #mwlibchat#txlchat
A3
I think we, as school librarians, foster thinking, creating, sharing, and growing for our Ss. It's in the heart of what we do and why we do it. #mwlibchat#TxLChat
A3: I use it to challenge the Ss. Think how the resource can help their learning. Then share their experience (preferably digitally). They grow it by altering the target audience’s original perception. It combines #growthmindset & accountability! #txlchat#mwlibchat
Q3: The new @AASL Standards Framework center around 4 Domains: Think, Create, Share & Grow. How do these components currently fit into your practice as a Library Professional? #mwlibchat#txlchat#AASLstandards
A2 Con: Being overwhelmed trying to be perfect in all expectations on both AASL and state standards...even though there are so many similarities between the two. #mwlibchat#txlchat
#mwlibchat#txlchat A3: think-we help with informational literacy, create- promote creative thinkers, share-encourage collaboration, and grow-provide students tools to be successful
Q4: In your current work with your students, which domain (Think, Create, Share or Grow) do you feel is your strength? Which is a goal? #mwlibchat#txlchat#AASLstandards
A3: We are all helping Ss think, create, share, and grow each day. So many possibilities for TLs. It’s an exciting time to be in the profession #mwlibchat#txlchat
A4 I feel like Think and Grow are my strengths - especially in research. Helping Ss learn how to find what they need to do more #mwlibchat#txlchat Would love to do more Sharing outside w others outside of our library
A4 I really would hope that fostering growth in my students would be my strength. All those other things (think, create, share) are why my students do to grow. #mwlibchat#txlchat
A3 Do we also collaborate w/Ts/Specialist/Admins 2 think/create/share/grow future-ready learning culture/instructional practices? Even more exciting 2 me > impact! #mwlibchat#txlchat
A3: We are all helping Ss think, create, share, and grow each day. So many possibilities for TLs. It’s an exciting time to be in the profession #mwlibchat#txlchat
A4...probably Think and Share.
Having elem Ss I see Growth longitudinally over several years. I would love to be able to Share more. #mwlibchat#txlchat
A4: Without sounding like a #literarygoddess 😂, my strength is creating. I inspire Ss to be originals. Group mentalities are great but creation is outstanding. It’s how trademarks, patents & entrepreneurs are made! #txlchat#mwlibchat
Q5: Shared Foundation: Include: Demonstrate an understanding of diversity & a commitment to inclusiveness. How do you current try to address this foundation? #mwlibchat#txlchat#AASLstandards
A4 I feel like Think and Grow are my strengths - especially in research. Helping Ss learn how to find what they need to do more #mwlibchat#txlchat Would love to do more Sharing outside w others outside of our library
A4 In instruction, think and create are strengths in my library. Professionally, share and grow. My goal is to be more explicit in discussing a growth mindset with students. #txlchat
The challenge is that sometimes all this doesn't fit nicely into a box for a score or assessment which sets up roadblocks for some...got to keep pushing the envelope #MWLibchat
The challenge is that sometimes all this doesn't fit nicely into a box for a score or assessment which sets up roadblocks for some...got to keep pushing the envelope #MWLibchat
#mwlibchat#txlchat A5: I examine our collection to make sure every student can find books where they relate/see them themselves. I also have a rule that kids can’t say no to working together.
I believe w/the help of admins we CAN measure impact of classroom-library collaboration on Ts & #schoollibrarians professional growth. That's where power lies. #mwlibchat#txlchat
The challenge is that sometimes all this doesn't fit nicely into a box for a score or assessment which sets up roadblocks for some...got to keep pushing the envelope #MWLibchat
A5: Create activities that will strengthen our ELL & SPED students. Something to empower them and awaken hidden talents through multimedia contests and book club. #txlchat#mwlibchat#hopeful
Maybe the best thing to do is to keep sharing our stories... and featuring S and T voices on the impact of library collab & programs. I’ll keep thinking on this! #mwlibchat#TxLChat
A5 This one is all about equity. I try to reach those students who need more encouragement in reading, tech skills, and computer science. I encourage students to try new things regardless of if they are typical for their peers. #mwlibchat#txlchat
A5b I also have Ss evaluate our collection. Last week a group of 6th graders drew up plans to rearrange some areas to make it more user-friendly #mwlibchat#TxLChat
A5: This is where a student led library council is needed. I want the hidden, diverse jewels seeking out the book reviews. If there’s little S interest, combine diverse Ts w/Ss. Give them direction & let them have a seat at the table. #txlchat#mwlibchat
Q5: Shared Foundation: Include: Demonstrate an understanding of diversity & a commitment to inclusiveness. How do you current try to address this foundation? #mwlibchat#txlchat#AASLstandards
I love using students to help drive the decisions I make for the library. I tell them all the time that the library is THEIR space. I am merely the gatekeeper. #mwlibchat#txlchat
Q6: Shared Foundation: Curate: Collecting, Organizing, and Sharing Resources. How does this align with your current practices? #mwlibchat#txlchat#AASLstandards
A6 All about curation as I start teaching research to HS students. LOVE Collections in Destiny. Directs Ss right where we need them to start & branch out from there as needed! #mwlibchat#txlchat
Or even better, have more participation in chats, panels & conference that focus on diversity. Then instruct PD at your campus on diversity. It’s proactive & shining a light! #txlchat#mwlibchat
Maybe the best thing to do is to keep sharing our stories... and featuring S and T voices on the impact of library collab & programs. I’ll keep thinking on this! #mwlibchat#TxLChat
Yes. We have a craft station this week. 3rd graders were upset that 2nd grade didn't clean up after themselves. Cracked me up.
"They ruined the floor. Where's the vacuum?" #mwlibchat#txlchat
A5: We try to make every individual feel safe and valued. We look for opportunities to empower all Ss when possible (clubs, presentations, etc). This is a work in progress! #mwlibchat#txlchat
#mwlibchat#txlchat A6: I recently asked to become an admin for our school’s google classroom so that I can see lesson plans. I have been sending teachers resources without any time being taken on their part
A6: I involved ELA, Sci, SS, & Math teachers for my first book collection analysis & weeding. I plan to continue to strengthen & cultivate these relationships. #txlchat#mwlibchat
#mwlibchat#txlchat A6: I recently asked to become an admin for our school’s google classroom so that I can see lesson plans. I have been sending teachers resources without any time being taken on their part
A6 I facilitate 6th grade projects where Ss develop their own measurable learning goals. It can be anything from learning Japanese to the creation of instructional soccer videos. Ss are engaged and developing resource collections based on their own interests #mwlibchat#txlchat
Q7: Shared Foundation: Explore: Growth mindset through experience and reflection. How does this align with your current practices? #mwlibchat#txlchat#AASLstandards
A5 I try to reach out find a topic for the kid that just can’t find anything: ask him/her what interests them - then I purchase it for library. #mwlibchat#txlchat
#MWLibchat#txlchat A7: I am still working on this one but I like to try to leave time for students to share what they have created in makerspace or what they liked about current book they have read. Time is an issue 😢
A7 I love how this foundation addresses authentic problems. Bye bye random research topics. Research should be about real world problems that our students can actually solve! #mwlibchat#txlchat
A7: Love that these make me think about what I'm actually doing! #growthmindset is a huge thing at our campus. The campus mindset is slowly revolutionizing to focus on the process, not just the result. #txlchat#mwlibchat
A7: Love that these make me think about what I'm actually doing! #growthmindset is a huge thing at our campus. The campus mindset is slowly revolutionizing to focus on the process, not just the result. #txlchat#mwlibchat
A7 Me talking to myself it probably the most effective. Once the Ss realize that I am, in fact, not crazy. They start replying and helping me work through probs. #mwlibchat#TxLChat
A7: Reflection is what I struggle w/Ss. They just check it as task done. But it’s the reflecting that download the experience to the brain’s CPU. Any ideas on making the reflection count? Separately from reteaching...#txlchat#mwlibchat
A8: The vocab may be slightly different between various sets of standards but the goal is equitable access to resources that promote advanced student learning and experience #mwlibchat#txlchat

Q8: As you’re exploring these new standards, what (if any) alignment are you seeing with other frameworks, such as #FutureReadyLibs? #mwlibchat#txlchat
Love to use exit tickets, Padlets, Socrative, or Twitter for Older Ss - It's something which takes practice but Ss often find they learn MORE from the reflection #mwlibchat#txlchat
A7: Reflection is what I struggle w/Ss. They just check it as task done. But it’s the reflecting that download the experience to the brain’s CPU. Any ideas on making the reflection count? Separately from reteaching...#txlchat#mwlibchat
A8: I've only glanced at the new standards. I see the #futurereadylibs standards branching out and providing clarity and examples. Very neat graphics too. #txlchat#mwlibchat
A7 Working on a “Speed Dating” to share what learned from research project but feel wording not appropriate for elementary What do call it? #mwlibchat#txlchat
A8: I've only glanced at the new standards. I see the #futurereadylibs standards branching out and providing clarity and examples. Very neat graphics too. #txlchat#mwlibchat
Q8: As you’re exploring these new standards, what (if any) alignment are you seeing with other frameworks, such as #FutureReadyLibs? #mwlibchat#txlchat
Q9: These standards can be used as personal guides (integrated as teaching opportunities arise) or as a progression (starting w/ Domains & moving out toward mastery). Which method fits your professional practice? #mwlibchat#txlchat#AASLstandards
A8 I just love how we are moving away from those checkbox standards and towards real learning. Learning that can't always be measured with a multiple choice but is so much more authentic and relevant to student success. #mwlibchat#txlchat
Q8: As you’re exploring these new standards, what (if any) alignment are you seeing with other frameworks, such as #FutureReadyLibs? #mwlibchat#txlchat
A9 domains outward. I'm a list type of gal.
We do use some lessons each year (because the Ss love them) so I can def find their #AASLstandards
quickly #mwlibchat#txlchat
A9 IMHO state standards rule Ts responsibilities/concerns/needs 4 support/collab - as such should be of utmost concern 2 #schoollibrarians ! #mwlibchat#txlchat
A9: Since most of my lessons are tied to the teacher’s curriculum, I use them as guides, integrating where they apply. #txlchat#mwlibchat#AASLstandards
A9: As 2nd yr lib, teaching (TTESS) performance guidelines are not too far away. I can easily adapt to the model of progression or personal improvement. My challenge is getting subjects other than ELA into the library to activate my super teaching powers. #txlchat#mwlibchat ;)
A8 I just love how we are moving away from those checkbox standards and towards real learning. Learning that can't always be measured with a multiple choice but is so much more authentic and relevant to student success. #mwlibchat#txlchat
Q9: These standards can be used as personal guides (integrated as teaching opportunities arise) or as a progression (starting w/ Domains & moving out toward mastery). Which method fits your professional practice? #mwlibchat#txlchat#AASLstandards
Q10: Share your thoughts on advocating for the school library with your stakeholders (Ts, Admin & parents) using the #AASLstandards! How will you get the word out? #mwlibchat#txlchat#AASLstandard
A9: I don’t know if this fits but when Ss ask me ?s I answer but tease them about my ideas having #copyrights & challenge them to develop their own. Or do a library task to use my ideas! I thought it was engaging but now sounds mean! 😂 #txlchat#mwlibchat
A8 I just love how we are moving away from those checkbox standards and towards real learning. Learning that can't always be measured with a multiple choice but is so much more authentic and relevant to student success. #mwlibchat#txlchat
I like the integration approach. I've been trying to incorporate #futurereadylibs in small bits & pieces with everything I do this year. And keep improving every year! #mwlibchat#txlchat
Q9: These standards can be used as personal guides (integrated as teaching opportunities arise) or as a progression (starting w/ Domains & moving out toward mastery). Which method fits your professional practice? #mwlibchat#txlchat#AASLstandards
A3 We do a lot of #makerspace challenges at my library. Ss are asked to #think and #create. They are also asked to share via platforms such as @Flipgrid and discuss what they did and how they could make it better #txlchat#mwlibchat
A8 I just love how we are moving away from those checkbox standards and towards real learning. Learning that can't always be measured with a multiple choice but is so much more authentic and relevant to student success. #mwlibchat#txlchat
A9 I prefer to integrate the standards as needs arise in my teachers' curriculum, but can also see the spiraling nature of the standards which makes assessment and checks for mastery both necessary and ongoing #txlchat
A10 I feel like the new AASL standards are really something I've already been doing (with total stakeholder support) but now I finally have something legit to back up my "crazy, hippie" methods. I can't wait to share them with stakeholders. #mwlibchat#txlchat
A10
@AAIMhome created a Mug Your Supporters campaign last year. Planning to add the awesome Stakeholder graphic from https://t.co/43o3arR70L with some candy to the mug. All board members will get one at the next board meeting. #mwlibchat#txlchat
Have you read Our Librarian Won't Tell Us Anything: A Mrs. Skorupski Story by Toni Buzzeo! Put it on the top of your 2-read pile @AwakenLibrarian & keep on asking Ss 2 be original/inde thinkers! #mwlibchat#txlchat
You know I love a good checklist but they have absolutely no place in my standards for learning. Learning is a process and shouldn't ever be checked off a list #mwlibchat#txlchat
A10: #txlchat#mwlibchat Using the framework icons will help Ss and Ts to relate the foundations and domains to real life. The visuals are so important.
A10: I heard the phrase “evolved but familiar” used to describe the new standards at AASL conf. May be useful in describing to stakeholders #mwlibchat#txlchat
Q10: My plan is to make standards part of professional development. Most Ts & Admin still believe in the old library stereotype. Promote the library's transformation & establish credibility in the time Ts & Ss will invest in the library. #Goals#txlchat#mwlibchat
A10: Maybe I should start blogging about our library programs and how they connect to standards. What if I started mentioning standards in my social media posts that admin see? #txlchat#mwlibchat
