Hello #waledchat! Eric from Ontario, 🇨🇦! Looking forward to learning with you tonight! I teach grade 4/5. I also have an Ed. blog, YouTube channel, and create teacher & student resources! https://t.co/6KGS5o26Tc
Evening, #waledchat. I'm Brian. I teach middle-school students English in Colorado. Looks like question 1 should be coming in the door right behind me...
A1: I have found that when I emphasize procedures early on, I focus less on classroom management (because it takes care of itself) and focus more on learning and innovation! #waledchat@ERobbPrincipal@KTuttleEDU@DrCBishop
A1: Most people, adults and students appreciate knowing expectations and procedures- both can remove some ambiguity and bring clarity to a room #waledchat@MrPStrunk@PHausTech
A1: Procedures give everyone clear expectations and keep both people and materials safe. They also eliminate stress for everyone involved when they know exactly what is supposed to happen and how to get what they need #waledchat
A1: Ss, Ts, and everyone, need to know how a class is going to run, so that everyone is able show their best ability! Sometime it may look like controled chaios, but procedures work. #waledchat
A1: Procedures REDUCE ANXIETY! It took me a few years to figure this out. There is so much research on how predictability reduces anxiety and frees working memory for learning! #waledchat
A1: Procedures are important in the classroom so that all can be on the same page. Culture can't be built without norms and structure. The key is to be adaptable when a better way comes along.
#waledchat
A1: Procedures, or protocols, as I call them, are important for many reasons, but my favorite is that they structure the raw intellect, emotion and energy our our students in productive ways. #waledchat
A1: To allow learning to occur, especially when different activities are happening at the same time! We want learning and engagement to happen together while still remaining under control #waledchat
A1 Procedures are important because they remove guess work. Ss know the expectations and it reduces anxiety. When procedures are are clearly in place Ss and Ts can focus on learning #waledchat
A1-Kids need some consistency in their otherwise chaotic lives for one. Also the less time we have to spend on transitioning and other procedures the more time we have to engage and learn. #waledchat
A1: Procedures make things predictable, whether they’re emergency procedures or a weekly vocabulary quiz on Fridays... “This gets done then”; “We go here when”... #waledchat
A1 One reason classroom procedures are important is because the alternative to having those at least sometimes is making everything up from scratch all the time, which would be exhausting. #waledchat
A1 - People, especially Ss, thrive with consistency and procedures. Procedures can have a negative connotation, but procedures are just the process by which things are done. They are vital to a classroom. Procedures let Ss and Ts know what is expected. #waledchat
A1 - Structure that is positive and authentic helps kids focus, prepare and get excited about class. Often times people think of structure as negative. Students need routines to develop their own habits and a positive mindset. #waledchat
A1: I find class procedures reduce a lot of Ss anxiety. Ss appreciate knowing what is happening, what’s expected, and where their learning is taking them. #waledchat
A1: procedures give structure and a sense of order. Done correctly and they aid in the learning process. Overdone and they can stifle creativity and innovation. #waledchat
A1 We all need order and people like to know what is expected of them. When you have this from the beginning coupled with relationships you then will have the time for academics. #waledchat
A1: procedures give structure and a sense of order. Done correctly and they aid in the learning process. Overdone and they can stifle creativity and innovation. #waledchat
A1) Classroom management is important because it provides an environment for students to be successful and is a major key for a teacher to be effective. #waledchat
A1 It allows for everyone to be comfortable and successful. It opens the opportunities to go off-plan with a relevant story or challenge without derailing everything. It helps students and teachers practice what’s REALLY important. #waledchat
A2: I appreciate when staff work with students to establish expectations for what needs to happen when entering the classroom. #waledchat@MrPStrunk@WDoerwaldt
A1: When students know what to expect and what is expected, it gives them freedom to work within those constraints and lessens anxiety. They’re more open to learning, and there are fewer power struggles. #waledchat
A1: "Clarity precedes competence" and "repetition to the point of redundancy" Once you have things structured, there can be so much more creativity! #waledchat
A2: I really emphasize my expectations for how you walk into the room. If they run in or scream, I have them go back to the hall and try again. I want our room to be safe and structured to support learning. It has really helped with positive behavior choices. #waledchat
A2: Turning Chromebook screens towards me when I'm giving instructions. Crucial in my classroom! Adopted that one from the master himself, @_on11. Kids do it automatically now. #waledchat
A1: How to close read and annotate. It is used through the year with every document that we read. Helps Ss understand and read analytically. #waledchat
#waledchat Visual Notes- a personalized version of sketch notes- any way I can get students artsy and using color and graphics to help them see the big picture the better.
A2: Announcements are put on the TV in the lobby & in the cafeteria. Our cafeteria TV has been giving us trouble and the Ss are frustrated because they can't see announcements at lunch. I love that the procedure of checking TV announcements has become so engrained. #waledchat
A2: One procedure was to check two places before coming to be. 1) check with a peer as they can often help, 2) check with Google/YouTube. If they fail...
"... if no one else can help, and if you can find them....maybe you can hire The A-Team."
#waledchat
A2 - How we grade low-stakes assessment for feedback...tweeted about it last week, but I think this is the best thing I've done for edutwitter:
Color Coding Recall Attempts to Assess Learning
https://t.co/qfhAgH4XCL#waledchat
A2: Our procedure for retakes. Keep the learning going first using independent study resources, meet with me, then retake. Grades are climbing, but more importantly, they’re seriously mastering more content. #waledchat
A2 Our TQE method has increased learning, community, the joy of learning and eliminates homework, quizzes and tests. We also do a lot of call and response. Our blocks are spoilt into sections & everyone is up for it! #waledchat
A2: It's a few but as a traveling T, teaching them about my cart is essential! They know that's where to find ALL supplies, including extra copies, scrap paper, pencils, even the bin to hand in work. It has made the start of class so much smoother!!! #waledchat
A2: My juniors have online SAT practice that they hand in via Google Slides by Saturday at 12 noon... this gives them the week to plan when they’ll do it an they can manage their own time... #waledchat
A1 #waledchat Procedures are a norm you set. Expectations & goals. when they know a warm-up will be posted, they will settle in to class quicker and get to work completing it. when they understand the process of turning papers in, the class is more stream-lined-it runs smoother.
A2: We turn EVERYTHING in to the three colored bins. Green means “I get this.” Yellow means “I am unsure.” Red means “Please reteach me.” I was so sick of hearing kids ask where to turn things in. Even tests get turned into the bin. Everything. The bins. Yes, that too. #waledchat
A2: reading the board that shows the workshop schedule for the day. Ss immediately know where they're starting class and what materials they need... All before the bell rings! #waledchat
The one(s) I have worked on this year are student feedback protocols.
1. 1 Positive
2. “I wonder”
3. 1 and 1 - compliment and critique
4. 1 Question
They help structure the feedback students give each other in class and they keep class positive.
#waledchat
Procedures are the foundation for success. Students need to know what to do and how to do it so class runs seamlessly & with meticulous precision. #waledchat
A2: having many classes, clothes pins with students names. They clip them on the “ready to learn” line for their class when they enter the room. At the end of the day I can see who I need to catch up, who was missing, & I can even leave notes in the clips as needed #waledchat
A2 Eye contact and tracking the speaker. Also learning to know when it is your time to speak and then take your moment. Raising the hand does not happen at dinner with my friends so teaching them proper skills is key. #waledchat
A2: Using ‘stop and jot’ journals for Ss to park their ideas and thinking during class discussions. Ss get their thought written down so they can concentrate on what is being shared by others instead of focusing on what they want to say. #waledchat
A2: I have been using the Cybersandwich eduprotocol each week to help build conversations and research skills. It helps students be a part of a community, helping each other and discussing history. #waledchat
A2- Discussion protocols and we effectively and constructively engage others in conversation. Also our exit ticket procedure is running like a champ with my juniors now! #waledchat
Procedures- produce a sense of calm, they prepare students for the day, they preempt many questions and confusion. They are the canvas on which all the color and vibrancy of learning can be painted. #waledchat
A2 One procedure that is successful is going to a peer who has a strength like spelling who can help them. We have student experts with tech, editing etc #waledchat
I tell them to "clambshell" and model my hands for how I want the chromebooks to look. Learned it from @gett_marissa. It has been a HUGE help! #waledchat
In reply to
@Beyond_the_Desk, @megan_hacholski, @_on11, @gett_marissa
A3: Having students know to automatically open up Google Classroom and when they answer the Do Now, also get all the papers they need off the shelves for the day, so they don't need to get up while I'm providing instruction. #waledchat
Mine is just mine, not my school’s. But I allow retakes on any individual skill assessment IF they prepare & meet w/ me. I allow full credit. I don’t care WHEN they know it, just that they do. Start fresh each grading period. #waledchat
A2: PQP for offering effective feedback. Praise, Question, Polish that I learned from @JSerravallo Learning to give and receive appropriate feedback is so crucial in developing as readers and writers. #waledchat
A2) The usage of note taking guides . Many middle grade students struggle with organization and have trouble keeping up with the traditional note taking process. The guides reduces time wasted just writing notes and provides more time for discussions & practice. #waledchat
A3: Twitter does not give me enough characters for this. Lining up by our lockers before gym, putting our agendas out on outlet desks, stacking our chairs...such is life in 4th grade. I must remember they are 9-10 years old! #waledchat
A3: I have been inconsistent with bell ringers this year. I like to use it as a way for Ss to know they can get started without me asking but it hasn’t worked out. #waledchat
A3: Checking in and out books when I'm not in the media center. There's a check out sheet on the circulation desk with clear directions, but it rarely gets used. #waledchat
A3: I used totems for table leaders. The students would take turns leading their teams using a simple protocol and then debrief with their team at the end of class about the quality of their collaboration. Very little critical feedback was given during the debrief.#waledchat
A3 Not interrupting small group. Even if there are other adults in the room a few of my Ss still have difficulty with this. We have hand signals for the bathroom, breaks, tissues and drinks so I still reinforce using those rather than walking over to the table #waledchat
Hi #waledchat! Well I thought that I could take a shower in 15 minutes. Guess it’s more like a half an hour these days... anywho, I’m Kristen from PA, and I teach 6th grade science and shenanigans!!! #onebumleg#8weeksandcounting#whocounting#notme
A3: I really tried to teach a very specific procedure for returning Chromebooks but it is not working. I get so caught up in all the other end of class routines that I haven't held them accountable for doing it the way we learned it #waledchat
A3: I really wanted my juniors to engage in more online homework this year - more meaningful SAT practice, etc... tough to get kids to engage homework... #waledchat
A3 Friday Morning Rally Check in. Having several hundred students go straight to the gym wasn’t the best solution without checking in with their teacher.... my bad! #waledchat
A3 #waledchat I thought that my big board of connections- using yarn and pictures- like a huge evidence board of science would work well- it didn't it is a lot of work and we forget to update it. so it went to the wayside.
A3: Surprisungly, it’s entering quietly & getting right to work. I’ve had them go back into y’all & try again, used music, dimmed the lights, used points, etc. But not automatic yet. Not giving up though! It matters too much. #waledchat
All of my papers have numbers and are all available in mailbox slots. When students are out, I tell them which numbers they missed. Helps my middle school kiddos with organization when they follow through with labeling each paper. #waledchat
A3 Student asks, "May I use the bathroom?" I ask, "Do you see the pass hanging up?" They say, "Yes." I say, "There's your answer." This dialogue has not yet led to a procedure where students take breaks without asking me for permission. Time to try something new! #waledchat
A3: clip charts for behavior. I stopped. They are terrible... dear child, you screwed up, you probably acted like a child... now take the walk of shame a clip down!
the whole class can silently judge you now!
garbage. They should all be tossed in the garbage! 🗑 #waledchat
A3 - Every Teacher has endured this. Ss getting up when I say instead of the bell. I realized that it’s not fair to hold the entire class when I’m talking with a single Ss. Plus, Ss only have 4 min between classes. Why take up more of their time? #waledchat
A3 As a first year teacher I would ask my Ss to stand in a square in the hallway.
Ss need their space and it didn’t take long to change my ways! #waledchat
A4: Reteach, reteach, reteach. I think I will have a lot more success reteaching it after Christmas and very intentionally remind students of the process. #waledchat
A4: Didn't try it this year because there was so much "new" already. Next year, not sure if I'll try it. The lab will be a totally new space - maybe not ideal for something like that. #waledchat
The way kids enter the class is smooth. They like having a password that to say. Turn-in-talks and stop-&-jots are solid. Also, the procedure for turning in work is clear & consistent. #waledchat
A2: my test correction form. When ss don’t do well on a test, they look at their answers and talk about why it’s wrong and why the right answer is the right answer. Also group work with the acronym “Groups.” Really clear concise norms! #waledchat
A3) Homework that is not graded. It's was a good though and had student buy in but I did not see it as an important process but could be beneficial. So I ended up being inconsistent with it. #waledchat
A4 I collaborated with Ts and we came up with a better solution that worked better for everyone. It also made it less stressful for me, WIN WIN! #waledchat
A2&3 - a strong procedure is having individual boxes for each S w/their materials. I changed it once adn tried making more of a common area for the group and workinig together. That failed, I went back to the individual boxes. #waledchat
Shout out to @ScottLewisITC for pulling into parking lots every five minutes to answer Q's while he picks his daughter up from practice! Love the #waledchat fam. Thanks for not tweeting and driving!
A4 #waledchat I find the absolute best way to build a community of respect/engagement is to build strong relationships with 1-minute check ins. The more students work together and the more I talk to them and really get to know them- the more positive/respectful our classroom is.
A4: We are totally resetting, taking a few days without the Chromebooks and when we come back to them on Monday we will be going over expectations very clearly and I will make sure I follow through on my end and support them in doing everything correctly #waledchat
A4: My leadership protocol can be fixed by giving my students a simple rubric based off the protocol combined with a Google Form they can use to assess their teams and derive a plan for improving their collaboration. #waledchat
Most likely, if a child is not engaged, they are going to end up in trouble. So I adjust lessons as I go along. I ask for student feed back. I ask students lots of questions. And we don’t sit for very long! 😁#waledchat
A4 It is really hard for 6 year olds to wait, especially when they are excited. I have to find a visual that can help them remember. Right now I put up 1 finger so they know to wait #waledchat
A4: Reteach, reteach, reteach. I think I will have a lot more success reteaching it after Christmas and very intentionally remind students of the process. #waledchat
As long as the relationships are built, the consistency and communication is in place- the more informal the classroom can be. A change in format can be a great thing if students feel safe in their learning environment- security is relationships #waledchat
I do them...then stop for awhile...then do them again....I am right there with you...I always charge in head full of steam and slowly the wind goes out of my sails! #waledchat
A4: I went back to having Ss in charge of their materials. Easier for me and teaches responsibility. They also know not to bring anything to my room unless I ask them for something specific. I have everything they are going to need. #waledchat
A4: Sometimes, having the students “in charge” of those procedures can help and give back class ownership. Or giving examples and non examples. Consistency is key, but can be so difficult!
#waledchat
A5: My boy was diagnosed with a double ear infection today, and I think I've got a nice sinus infection of my own, so our weekend "routine" won't be happening. Taking it easy and laying low. #waledchat
A5: This time of the year its all about getting in the woods as much as possible for some hunting & disconnected time. Family time planned in the middle of the days. It will be awesome!
#waledchat
A5: Looking forward to seeing the in-laws, but routine-wise, I am looking forward to going to lunch and grocery shopping after church with @LBStrunk every Sunday. :) #waledchat
Quiz bowl tournaments are getting pretty regular and routine. After that I like to meditate, read and binge watch some TV- my weekends are more for relaxing as the rest of the week is a busy busy time #waledchat
From Department for Devil's Advocacy: Potential downside of procedures applied thoughtlessly and/or exclusively = sapping students' agency, having compliance thoroughly spackle over initiative. #waledchat
A5: I usually get up, make a cup of coffee that I get to slowly sip and enjoy on a lazy Sat AM. This weekend, I'll be at a wedding in OH. Really looking forward to Mon off! #waledchat
All of my papers have numbers and are all available in mailbox slots. When students are out, I tell them which numbers they missed. Helps my middle school kiddos with organization when they follow through with labeling each paper. #waledchat
A5: Saturday breakfast with my family is my favorite time of the week. A patio spot, an omelet and a hot cup of joe while catching up with my peeps is the best! #waledchat
A5 Every Friday night is movie night with my wife and two girls. We watch a movie, have popcorn, and the girls get to sleep in our room. I think I look forward to it as much as they do. #myworld#waledchat
A5: I was never a morning person but I've gotten in the habit of waking up early Sunday morning and getting some house cleaning done. Surprisingly calming... My stress levels tend to match my home's mess levels 😂 #waledchat
