CatholicEdChat is a twitter chat. Topics focus on discussions around educational issues for Catholic Educators and topics beneficial to Catholic Schools. We look forward to continuing to connect Catholic Educators online to discuss education and teaching with faith in our schools. The chat takes place on Saturday mornings. Time 9am EST.
I’m Andrea, Assistant Director for Educational and Formation Programs with @NCEATALK. I hope you all are off to a great start to the school year! #CatholicEdChat We will be talking about Service Learning today.
Good morning from stormy Indianapolis #catholicedchat I am an assistant principal at a Jesuit high school. Very glad to be back with you all on the chat this morning.
I'll be bouncing between chats this morning, but our new found celebrity - Sr. Mary Jo takes our Ss on multiple trips into the city to feed the homeless. #CatholicEdChat
A1: I know that each class is responsible for chairing a service project. We're located a 5 min walk away from an assisted living home, so some classes visit regularly #CatholicEdChat
A1 Stand Down (helps homeless vets), Second Harvest (prepares meals for children for the weekend), Catholic Charities (stocking shelves and anything else they need), yard work for the Sisters. #CatholicEdChat
It's crazy, but awesome to see positive and personal side of who these people are who founded our schools. They're stunned that a nun played college softball. #CatholicEdChat
Yes! We started this a couple of years ago and it have been great! Not only does it offer direct experience with our community’s commitment to service but everyone builds positive new relationships #CatholicedChat
Good morning from chilly La Loche SK where I put the furnace on yesterday morning, but am resisting today. I’m Melva and I teach grade 3 here. #CatholicEdChat
A1. @OConnellHS Sophomore classes do a full day of service at 30 sites all throughout the greater Washington DC area. Working face to face alongside residents of retirement communities, nursing homes, or homeless visitors to food banks affirms human dignity. #CatholicEdChat
A1. In the past we have done a variety of collections - school supplies, socks for homeless, toys at Christmas. We are looking at changing things up a bit this year. #CatholicEdChat
A1 Service projects don't have to be complicated. @s_margaret_mary sponsors several refuge families. We collected quarters for washing clothes at landry mats #CatholicEdChat
Canned food 🥫drive and a citywide day of service where our entire school goes out to minister to different agencies are the biggies. We have a wonderful Campus Ministry @BCHS_CM Department that is constantly organizing events. #CatholicEdChat
A2. most of these decisions are made at the beginning of the year but some will come along during the year. We also have our set ones we always do. #CatholicEdChat
Same here. Some annual and others arise as student engage in community need through their parishes, Community Service courses, or family experiences. Love that students see opportunities to be men & women for/with others and answer the call to act. #catholicedchat
Q2. We have a new staff member @danielle_fuchs and she’s working with leadership, teachers and students now to explore opportunities. She’d love to take a group of students out of the country for service. #CatholicEdChat
Box of Joy is my favorite because it blesses so many children, is so simple and can easily be lead by a student organization https://t.co/rAZl7N0NS1#catholicedchat
A2 Again, I have to give credit to our Campus Ministry @BCHS_CM Department. They are highly organized and constantly offering opportunities for our students. And their office is located, very symbolically, in the heart of our school. #CatholicEdChat
Today is my cousin’s baby shower! Thanks for all your prayers, baby Thomas was born at only 27 weeks but is now at 4 lbs. and in a criblet in NICU! No more incubator! #catholicedchat
A2. “This tradition is our mission /
And Moana, there's so much to do!”
We draw inspiration for each of 4 grade levels from a common guiding principle aligned across our curriculum, and design our service opportunities to echo and support these same teachings. #CatholicEdchat
Just an aside: #CatholicEdchat My son attended a Catholic U & then transferred to a private one. He said the students in private u talked about social justice all the time, but actually did very little. The student at the Cath U were engaged in service even while busy w/ studies.
This is my friends website for her charity Gold Rush Cure https://t.co/1pVkjhfHoM Encourage your students to perhaps create a pot of gold to a child with cancer. #catholicedchat
Danielle from Grande Prairie, AB... VP & Gr1 ❤️ #CatholicEdChat A2: we sort of plan it thru year. Some classes have service projects they ❤️ to do (Gr3 always does the Christmas Shoeboxes). District wide service projects this yr based on scripture.
A3: Last year, I nominated a student for state recognition, and she received a $1000 college scholarship. Also encourage HS to spend time in discernment about career choice. #CatholicEdchat
I’m Andrea, Assistant Director for Educational and Formation Programs with @NCEATALK. I hope you all are off to a great start to the school year! #CatholicEdChat We will be talking about Service Learning today.
A3. Each year at the 1st mass, we hand out a pin to recognize these Ss. When they are seniors, instead of a pin they wear a cord at graduation and are recognized for their years of service at awards assembly. #CatholicEdChat
A3: school community - maybe a shout-out during morning announcements, the greater community also has awards students can be nominated for. We've sent little cards home in agendas or the mail to students as a thank you! #CatholicEdChat
Hanging out at a the Kwon do tournament today, so no #CatholicEdChat but love the topic. Maker club @BrebeufJesuit partners to teach programming and #digcit to local school. #makerEd
A3 Ss are acknowledged several ways... Our Dir of Com is great about tweeting out student service @BrebeufJesuit. Celebrate in weekly newsletter and biannual print magazine. We also have school level service awards given at our Honors Convo and Baccalaureate Mass #catholicedchat
A3: We recognize them with a special award from the school president after one of our Masses. We do the same for faculty and staff so that Ss see that everyone is called to serve. #CatholicEdChat
#CatholicEdChat Have you heard of the NCEA Youth Virtue, Valor and Vision Award? You can still nominate your students. Nominations are open until Sept. 30th. https://t.co/js7Ob6vfPR@NCEATALK@CrossCatholic We would love to hear what great things your kiddos are doing!
A3: Also, in my Theology classes I spoke about service that no one ever knows about: visiting an elderly neighbor, helping someone you meet at the store, etc. Some service is not going to on the college app, just in your heart. #CatholicEdchat
A3. In my gamified classroom, there are special power-up abilities & badges that can only be unlocked by highest levels of service to our community. We’re now developing a similar approach to schoolwide teacher PD with an entire track devoted to service learning. #CatholicEdChat
#CatholicEdchat our “Service” projects are more integrated as a normal part of teaching and learning (our school focus is PBL) makes it engaging and relevant for Ss.
I am fortunate in being out of the Principal's Office suite and in the Information Commons. Again, where the people I serve are ... and anyone can just stop in - which is a blessing and a curse :-) #catholicedchat

A4 IMO the biggest challenge is time. Students are very busy with academics, sports, extra-curriculars and trying to sleep occasionally. #catholicedchat
#CatholicEdchat the spectrum of social justice and service-like projects spans from the neighborhood level, to city and national to global. All Ss share out projects at our end of trimester exhibitions of learning.
A4: I felt we did not always help our students see those we were serving as people first. I always asked my 10th grade - do you think you could ever be homeless? They always said of course not. #CatholicEdchat
A4: sometimes families can get overwhelmed with sending things or money in for different service projects. Communication between classes is super important and timing (for bigger projects/fundraising) #CatholicEdChat
A4 good morning everyone! we have a hard time with convincing our students to make time to go on the projects. we have opportunities every day.. #CatholicEdChat
It's a little easier with high school students. I encourage them to give up their Starbucks drink and use that money to go buy a box of cereal for the food drive. #CatholicEdChat
Sometimes Ss who have been traditionally marginalized struggle with the concept of helping others and having a voice to be part of change... our job to form them with a servant learning mindset. #CatholicEdChat
Yes we were all asked to do community acts of kindness one week & as our community is very small there aren’t a lot of choices. The folks in long term care were inundated with visitors for a week & then left alone. #catholicedchat
A4. Timing & resources. This year I’m working with @DJOMinistry & our Christian Service coordinator to design a fully integrated off-site cross-curricular initiative. Goal of spending a full week with 300+ juniors in Appalachia serving & learning in the spring. #CatholicEdChat
It is easy for Ss (and myself) to freeze up in shear magnitude of pain in the world. Last year M. Obama came to Indy & talked abt using your voice when invited to the table...any table. I use that image with my students. Small conversations can lead to change #catholicedchat
No, because then I would truly be responsible for you. Now I can at least say I don’t know where you are and no I don’t have a tracker on you. #catholicedchat

A5: I always remember when @HendrickenHawks admin came to my school to sub, so I could give my teachers a luncheon. So generous and kind. #CatholicEdchat
#catholicedchat K-8 teachers or those who don't teach HS theology...how do you incorporate Catholic social justice into other academic areas? Science, English, Social Studies...?
A5 Everywhere from Dig Cit (responsible use of tech) to English & Social Studies (texts that highlight justice issues) to Science (care for environment) to Art (faith through performance) to traditional Religion courses. #catholicedchat

We have had great experiences intentionally choosing texts (non-fiction and fiction) which highlight/encourage discussion on Catholic social justice topics. #catholicedchat
A5: At the elem level, having many fiction and non- books that introduce people w/ various disabilities and how to include them in all aspects of life. #CatholicEdchat
A5. American Lit classes take a trip to an abandoned mental asylum to destigmatize mental health. Reading stories learning of this awful history, then using the CCC & DSM-5 to reflect on contemporary alternatives to institutionalization. https://t.co/KroaiT3PyF#CatholicEdChat
We weave the Catholic Social social teachings into all PBL (our 3 hour PBL block is co-taught by cultural literacy, science, leadership and theology faculty) last year grade themes were: social justice, civic action, energy+sustainability and education equity. #catholicedchat
A5 Everywhere from Dig Cit (responsible use of tech) to English & Social Studies (texts that highlight justice issues) to Science (care for environment) to Art (faith through performance) to traditional Religion courses. #catholicedchat
Pope Francis says he shares the pain and shame of the Catholic community at what he called the "grave scandal" of clerical abuse in Ireland
Follow live reporting: https://t.co/Y43EdhzsNI#PopeInIreland
A5: I tied the documentary, God Grew Tired of Us, into my MS classes Religion/ELA/SS Finally, after 9 years, I had the pleasure of meeting John Dau. #CatholicEdchat#servicelearning
You've been reading our goals for 2018-19 :-) This is a big focus for us - partnering and encouraging students/staff to engage in their parish service and outreach activities. #catholicedchat
We’re an independent school so we are not affiliated with a parish but a ministry of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth and have partnered with other sponsored ministries on projects plus we have 140+ partners in our region #catholicedchat

A5: IMO - being comfortable with faith permeation. Using bible verses & faith based poems about kindness. Infusing social studies & science w faith (gr 1 plants & animals - learning how to take care of Gods world. Service - pick up litter outside #CatholicEdChat
Just a few mins left in our chat today...I'd like to invite everyone to nominate a student for the NCEA Youth Virtue Valor and Vision Award @NCEATALK@CrossCatholichttps://t.co/js7Ob6dEYj Spread the word! Nominations open until Sept. 30th. #CatholicEdChat
