#Kinderchat, glue, glitter, gogurt, bringing daily joy to twitter. Find us Mondays, 9 pm EST and 8:30PM London time when we talk all things Early Years!
This is a fun question, though! What shows did we all watch as kids? Me: Mr Dressup, Today's Special, He-Man after school with my brother... #Kinderchat
I liked the "imaginary" part of Mr. Rogers, with the puppets & King Friday, etc. Not so much the puttering around the house part. But let's be clear: he was totally an ECE hero! #kinderchat
This introduction and sharing time is powerful- this is about fostering relationships as much as teaching is! Reach out and make a friend! Catch up with each other #Kinderchat
My grandma made clothes for Neighbor Kids Dolls for a living and would sometimes sew for my Barbies too! Or her and my mom would crochet dresses for them #kinderchat
I think the main difference between toys and manipulative is that manipulative are used to reinforce a lesson where as toys can be used more as free play! #kinderchat
OMG, my Cabbage Patch dolls were my prized possessions. And my grandma made whole wardrobes of beautiful clothes for them. I still have the clothes - they are works of art! #Kinderchat
A1: While toys can be educational tools, I feel like the main difference is the fact that manipulatives are creaed specifically for learning while toys were first created with the purpose of play #kinderchat
No toys allowed in our classroom. They could get lost, broken, everyone wants to try them out, but usually the child that brought them doesn't want to share...#kinderchat
of course! But i guess I meant structured learning time such as designated time in the classroom for subjects liek math, history, art, etc. #kinderchat
A1: A toy in my opinion has a specific purpose with a specific type of play in mind. A manipulative can be altered to fit a situation and is more open ended. I feel like many classic toys could be classified as more manipulative than current toys. Tough question! #kinderchat
I feel like I would like to start doing show and tell. I'm always curious about students' interests outside of school. The trick is finding the time to do it. #Kinderchat@SVVSDdts#SVVSDTechBingo

I started doing show & tell like a museum - 4 or 5 kids per day, they host an "exhibit" of their toy & small groups rotate through each exhibit. Everyone gets to touch, talk, play. #kinderchat
It can be. I tried many different ways of doing it over the years. I think there are lots of other things to discuss and ways to develop language. #maybejustmyissue#kinderchat
Not currently in the classroom BUT my own two kids get to bring a toy from home during their star of the week time. It’s a huge moment for them. #kinderchat
I've also done it in conjunction with the letter of focus. So Ss had to bring in something that started with a specific letter and it had to fit into a pencil box (bc I didn't want giant stuffed animals and such coming to class 😅) #kinderchat

I've asked adults to bring in a fave book or personal artifact as a provocation for an inquiry activity. But, it's not what we do at a cocktail party!! #kinderchat
i've also seen a toy-from-home act as a great bridge for a child who struggled to initiate social interactions, so.... I guess not all bad? As always: intention, relationships matter... #Kinderchat
A few years back, my Ss were playing with the big blocks and built a bridge. Then, they started retelling The Three Billy Goats on their own. At that point, I became even more intentional about providing for these opportunities #kinderchat
I tend not too. I find they go missing, get lost outside or get broken. I try to have any toys that get brought stay in backpacks. Right now our class bear is babysitting any visiting stuffies though. It's a tough one to me. #kinderchat
Toys in general = positive. Our grade 2s do an awesome science unit where they build a chair for a beanie-boo, and the level of engagement/enthusiasm is AMAZING. #Kinderchat

I try to avoid a lot of the really trendy commercial toys, but will confess: I once spent $$$ on Shopkins for a little guy having a tough transition to KG. Helped him settle to have toys he knew & loved. #Kinderchat
Thinking to create community bc some classrooms have a range of socioeconomic status and the toys can differ greatly among Ss in those circumstances. Without community, issues could arise. I mean, they still can w. community but the discussions are easier had #kinderchat
One of my JK classes has old desktop computers for dramatic play, and the kids tell me they are "doing business" as they type 100 miles/hour. Cracks me up. #Kinderchat
Yes! Exactly! Especially for those who struggle- a toy can open a whole social world of connections #Kinderchat I think that's why they love show n tell
