The Breakfast Club – #BFC530 – is a 15 minute, 1 question Twitter chat every weekday. We chat in 4 timezones Mon-Fri – 5:30am Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Times. The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
Best is when we get our hands into it, collaborate, and leave feeling productive and energized with new tools, inspiration, and useful resources we created or found. #bfc530
I often help Ts learn how to work with the databases we use for English learner data. Ideally, I'm talking as little as possible, Ts are able to work hands-on with their student data, and they walk away with something they can use in their school to support students. #bfc530
Personalized small group book study, weekly 15 minute get together with itinerary of pages to discuss, time to implement ideas into classroom, and then reflect as a group what is/isn't working. #bfc530
Good morning everyone- my ideal PD is relevant to my day-to-day. It is something which will enrich my teaching practice thereby benefitting my students. Even better when there is time allotted for actually creating hands-on resources-that precious time is so hard to find. #bfc530
PD should inspire learners to do something. If you have to force your teachers to use the “PD” than it was not very inspirational and one could argue it was a waste of their time. #bfc530
Good morning! I have to say the edcamp model cos’ there’s lots of time for thinking, brainstorming, and ways to discuss and tweak ideas to implement today. Some of my biggest motivations have come from traditional keynotes and expert podcasts, but I can’t ask questions! #bfc530
My ideal PD looks like #EdCamp. Educators coming together and having rich discussions based on what they need or want to learn more about. Even if I only learn 1 new thing, the conversations are priceless. #bfc530
Good morning #BFC530. Luis from RI checking in. Best Pd is when it is teacher selected, relevant to area of need, collaborative and hands on. Something that can be used right away. Of course involve positive people.
Timely question this morning - we have a PD day next Friday and I'm wondering what the district will have in store for us for the day. I do agree, though, the edcamp model is most personalized! #bfc530
For ideal PD combine clear objectives, collaboration and practice, wide applications for immediate implementation, , tech expertise, and choice of synchronous or asynchronous delivery #bfc530
I love well run PLCs and especially when we use @SchoolReformInc discussion protocols. They make teacher talk so rich - thoughtful, on topic, efficient and filled with equity of voice. I like it when my coworkers and I learn and solve together ! #bfc530

From a learner perspective, my ideal PD teachers me something new, then gives me time to work on my own in order to try out what I learned and decide how it fits into my own work/classroom/students. #bfc530
My ideal PD is one where it is personalized for what people need. People have choices of what they want to learn about and walk away with real things they can use in their classroom or in working with kids. #bfc530
Some of the most ideal PD exists right here...eduTwitter...timely, wide-ranging, self-selected, collaborative, engaging, with others who are so passionate about life-long learning. #bfc530
That is a shame, especially in a day where we are being asked to give students more freedom & options that often the professionals are more chained up from pursuing what will enhance their practice #bfc530

Good PD is research based. I want to know what we are doing has been tested and piloted and it has a large effect size. Otherwise we could fall victim to fads, whims, and trends. #bfc530
Any sharing of experience that makes me reflect, laugh, and consider a shift in thinking.
I leave the experience renewed, recharged, and recalibrated.
Good PD gets me pumped about the possibilities of tomorrow.

Couldn’t agree more. PD can be a one and done session if you really want to grow. That is why I love Communities of Practice. You have ongoing support for your continued growth and help when things get tricky! #bfc530

Sometimes no PD is the best PD - let us sit with our teams for an hour or two and talk/plan/share... we never get the opportunity to collaborate on school time. And 10 minutes doesn't cut it. #bfc530

I am grateful for @Twitter, @facebook@voxer for helping me along on my PD journey. Also, I am so glad that PD books are affordable now (most of them). I remember when they were not.. #bfc530

Agree. I can choose to just "listen", share, go deeper, or tune out any eduTwitter discussion. That freedom has created tremendous growth in my practice in the past 5 years (as well as gaining insights from some great educators like those here #bfc530 )
Jumping in v late to say that my ideal PD would be some sort of reciprocal coaching where topics were explored and we supported and encouraged one another to take risks and assess, critically but kindly, how things were going. #bfc530

PD should recognise some key things.
1) Generally room is full of people with a collective wealth of experience-use it!
2) If PD isn’t enabling of student & teacher success, did it have a point (updates on legal issues excluded)?
3) Recognise context& ask what they need

I have to say, I've found a few good teacher sites on Facebook that offer some great lesson ideas and sharing of information. It's out there if you take the time to look and find your squad. #bfc530
When my office does district-wide PD, there's always a choice of sessions Ts can attend. I'd rather have a few people in my session who are really interested in the topic than a room full of people who don't care or already know it. #bfc530
Yes! I'm involved in something like this with @westernquebec - we work with a colleague and set our own action plans with goals- we are given time to observe one another and have coaching sessions before/after- it's so valuable #bfc530
My ideal PD are real world jobs within the local industry. Awesome for curating content that is actually meaningful to students and families and keeps me familiar with the often uncomfortable part of many learning curves, helping me to empathize with my students. #bfc530

#uncamp -- #edcamp w no set program except time and place mtg. schedule. Meet + poll interest + go-for-it session + regroup + do again 'til day's end. #bfc530
We just love ourselves some initiatives in my district. I'm on four committees about initiatives and there are at least 2x that many more I'm not part of. What I really want is less initiatives so I can focus on a few really well and with fidelity and ongoing support! #bfc530

As with any profession, those who have a passion will want to improve others just see it as a job & paycheck. PD isn't what feeds the passionate to greater things, its the love of what they do and PD for the paycheck seekers will be a waste of time #bfc530
It's quite an interesting report. A lack of passion could be a casual factor but lots of other causal factors could be at play too. It might just be it's really hard to improve after a certain level. Full link here: https://t.co/8D9qAFA4FY#bfc530
It can be used in Australia towards maintaining Teacher Accreditation. It needs to be recorded (which is why Storify was so useful). Matches to Standard 7.4 (See pic). #bfc530
The thing about #bfc530 that everyone is missing is that we are on the verge of runaway climate change and we need a complete re-think of the global economy to ensure a just society & avoid planetary catastrophe.
And as always, I worry that my love of questioning and love of data come off as contrarian or abrasive. Gotta work on figuring out how to do it more politely! #bfc530
You have the key, if you know it's not "hitting the mark." Then consult your PLN for opportunities to learn and grow where you know its needed. #bfc530

I’ll have a read George. In Australia @aitsl developed an Australian Teacher Performance and Development Framework. The AITSL website is full of such resources and research. The fact sheets are attached. The framework and its research is at: https://t.co/JBhWqE7YzO#bfc530
I get it my damn self ... in an era where we are supposedly embracing this “kids taking ownership of their learning” mantra many teachers wait for PD to be told what to do and how to do it ... our PD system runs contrary to what we are supposedly doing in the classroom #bfc530
So we know the importance in the 21st to empower our students to learn- isn’t the best way to ensure teachers make the shift to student-centered classrooms https://t.co/cU4r8WTn7n model the strategies in their own learning? #bfc530#chrisweissct
Our district is going 1:1, and we can't print from chromebooks. Please share any strategies/tools for grading/sharing feedback on essays with grades 5-12 ELA students online. Any suggestions welcome! Please RT! #nctevillage#aplangchat#elachat#2ndaryela#bfc530#edcampbos
Indeed! According to Hattie’s effect sizes, Teacher Professional Development Programs have an ES of 0.41 which is regarded in his research as significant. See: https://t.co/crWPbPX8ay#bfc530

I thought so too, but then I read The Mirage! And now I'm conflicted. What to do when two seemingly research based and credible publications disagree? Just from our interactions here, I would love to hear your thoughts on the link I posted. Maybe even a blog post. #bfc530

Ideal PD is reasearch based and possibly in a small group of educators. That goes beyond a one time a one time learning experience. Multiple interactions would be best. #bfc530
More like a lesson teachers are expected to execute. Instruction, modeling, guiding, independent practice.
I do, we do, you do.
Give teachers time right there to create something meaningful and useful.
