A1) Admitting that every classroom is charged with creating critical readers and writers. Then acting accordingly.
A1: To me it is authentic writing each subject area’s context
A1 I think it is where writing is taught in all content areas & not just English.
A1: Even though I teach Science, we still have writing!
A1: Integrating the integral component of writing across all subject areas. The ability to write is major in life.
A1 Teaching/ using writing as a means of effective communication in all subject areas
A1: integrating writing into every subject you teach. Journaling, note taking, blogging.
Kylie Jackson, 5/6 Reading at Clinton. A1- writing/responding to different material within all subject areas.
a1: Asking students to make their thinking visible by committing to writing in EVERY subject
A1: It's something this old math guy needs to learn more about.
A1 writing in all subject areas
A1: Incorporating writing in all curricula
A1: Writing is present in all courses throughout the day. Using different styles of writing to express knowledge.
I can help you with that :). What writing happens now? https://t.co/lnf4bbB0Wu
A1: It's something this old math guy needs to learn more about.
A1 It's teaching Ss how writing is a means of communicating and learning in math, science, history, auto mechanics...
A1: Writing is an essential skill for every subject! We use words to express ourselves!
A1) Journaling in all subjects.
A1: students write to show their thinking.
Happy Sunday, ! Lara with ... getting my boys ready for the week, so I'll ❤️ your posts later.
A1: writing is expression of what students know, can be done for all subjects
A1: Writing outside of English class beyond composition and standard writing styles and medium.
So true. It is amazing they don’t realize how much they will communicate
A1B: It's also teaching Ss that different subjects have different expectations for writing
I love showing my students how they use reading skills In science and math.
Most of my Ts are really good at this, but my math staff needs a jump start. Hoping to nab a few ideas tonight :)
A1: It means that no matter what you teach, you implement writing. Writing in itself looks different in every content area.
It's writing in all content areas, but most also recognizing that writing in each area looks different. Math not same as ELA or SS
Joy Hofmeister-State Supt

Joy Hofmeister-State Supt
Hi, I'm ready for tonight's chat! Enjoyed seeing many of you at conference this weekend.
A2: At the risk of cliche, "writing is thnking on paper." If you can't write it clearly, you're probably not thinking it clearly
Good eveing! 8th grade English at Sequoyah MS in Edmond
Applying what is learned about quality writing and using it across all subject areas
A2: Reading and writing is used in all professions. It is important to see it from the lens of those professions
A1) It's demonstrating how the subject connects to the others and how it is applied in real life as well.
A2: BC we are all a team. We teach the same kids. We should work together to educate them. It's not a competition.
Kurt Myers, Assistant Principal Pioneer High School
A2: allows students to show their thinking and the process rather than the ABC guess
EXACTLY!!! https://t.co/PuIgxHkx7t
A2: BC we are all a team. We teach the same kids. We should work together to educate them. It's not a competition.
A2: Writing in different content areas other than ELA improves creativity and structural ability to formulate valid thoughts.
A2) Because writing...well, it's kind of a big deal.
A2. Because college professors will thank them. 🤓🤓🤓❤️
Brandon, elem. principal joining in late.
A2: Writing becomes technical in different content areas and must be modeled by professionals, isn’t always an English teacher.
A2: because writing naturally occurs and is required in all facets of life, not just when studying English.
A2: writing helps to develop full and deep thoughts -and it looks different in every subject
A2: To show Ss it's important in ALL areas not just in ELA.
Doug Brown running late! Hello
A2: so kids can communicate no matter what they are learning or doing!
A2: Because I college you write all kinds of stuff for all kinds of courses. ELA improves the structure and process.
A2: Communicating ideas is essential to all disciplines. Writing skills make a more effective communicator. https://t.co/MX8y3iT7pS
Brandon, elem. principal joining late.
A2- it is important that Ss see importance of writing and learn how to write more than just essays so they apply it later in life
A2: Writing in Math/Sci/History looks so much different than a typical ELA assignment. Makes students think critically.
A2) Writing is a basic form of communication all students need in any vocation they choose.
A2: We live in a text rich society. Ss need to know how to communicate clearly, not matter the context/content
Q2A Writing is an important tool for commucnication, no subject is exempt! Ss need to see the importance of writing beyond ELA.
A2: Ss remember more when they write it down. Can help them understand their own thinking more clearly.
A2 Because I didn't learn how to write a proper lab report in English. : )
A2: if u can't effectively express yourself u will not b heard... That goes 4 all disciplines https://t.co/XBGMbDTaLm
A2 give Ss an opportunity to communicate their understanding and thoughts for that subject
A2) There is a tactile connection with learning when one writes compared to typing. It also forces the Ss to think.
Hello everyone! Steven, a Middle School Assistant Principal from Missouri
Dr Gist faithfully joined in on a edchat in RID
A2 writing demonstrates a deeper understanding in every area
a2: All subjects should ask S's to write. It gives T's a window into the thinking that is occurring (or lack thereof in some cases)
A2 I think it's about expressing our thinking in a visible way to see if we truly understand and can share our knowledge
A2cont) which is conducive for their learning as well.
every time I see this it makes me so happy to have her as our leader
A2 A teacher can authentically assess the Ss thought process 4 solving problems and understanding of concepts.
Q2b When students write in other subjects they broaden their writing styles, vocab, thinking...
A1: I think writing can be done in any subject and can be cross-curricular with other subjects, and support ELA
A2: I don't know much about this topic, but writing is great therapy. Helps us realize and work through our issues. Need more of it.
a2: Committing thoughts to writing also helps fuel class rich discussions
welcome all glad to have you https://t.co/BlJnXdQHvG
Hello everyone! Steven, a Middle School Assistant Principal from Missouri
A2: What subject exists on it's own, in a bubble? They each support each other.
A2:Support ELA, we can find a way in each subject
You know I was taught in college to type to depersonalize to edit better https://t.co/pBk5Bqwwl8
A2) There is a tactile connection with learning when one writes compared to typing. It also forces the Ss to think.
welcome to I am from living in OK now. Taught in for 3 years!
A3: My students write music.
A2: When we write, we figure out what we think. If we are thinking in a subj, we should be writing in that subj...
A3: I've always thought sky-writing is far too little utilized in an academic setting...
Q2: Including writing is a way teachers can assess student learning & determine misconceptions for next steps.
A2) Because writing, just like reading or study skills, needs to develop across disciplines. https://t.co/E2th3qUPSZ
A2, part two: learning its conventions, thinking through the big ideas.
A3) The more authentic the better. What are authorities & practitioners in (insert your discipline here) writing? Find out. Do that.
A2 Writing is a basic life skill; job applications, mortgage apps…effective communication is necessary to success in any endeavor
A3: Big fan of business proposals centered on an academic idea.
A3: Essays, reflection, list of questions, journals, reports, proofs, the list goes on and on! https://t.co/n8jDsSe1gm
another budget casualty, I suppose? :) https://t.co/dMPmLytn9S
A3: I've always thought sky-writing is far too little utilized in an academic setting...
In ELA, 8th grade, the focus has been on expository, but I'm going hard on argument this year. https://t.co/U4yEg6JoNe
A3 Fiction, non-fiction, word problems etc.
A3 I love movie making, writing is a critical part and everybody loves the camera! These days, kids can use their smartphones!
A3) Reflections, reviews, opinions, narratives, and many more.
A2 Writing actually aids a student to develop deeper cognitive thinking. When you have to form sentences, you have to think.
A3: hashtags, texting, quick writes, presentations...
A3: How about you should include whatever you model for students. If students are writing, teachers should write with them.
A3: There are so many. I love reflection prompts the best. Fits any subject area and great wrap up to a lesson
A3- Padlet to have Ss respond to what we learned in class that day. Quick way to see their thoughts and make them think about it!
A3: In SS,we can have Ss write personal narratives of what that historical figure is thinking, founding fathers would think of today
A3: in science do a lot of compare/contrast, and defending thoughts with text evidence (in theory, trying) https://t.co/noA1FX0irh
A3: I have them write songs, raps, poetry, narratives, commercials, I love poetry slams, plays, etc.
Daughter learned more about writing from 8th grade history T than any other T! We're all in this together! https://t.co/fooXjx8Lfj
A1: I think writing can be done in any subject and can be cross-curricular with other subjects, and support ELA
A2. Writing is a muscle. Needs exercised
A3 Hypothesis & reports in science, letters in history...
A3: The sky's the limit when it comes 2 types! Persuade, explain, inform, entertain, essays, poetry...I say let kids choose!
A3b, response to lit and nonfiction too. It's a toughie, but necessary
A2: Engineers, doctors, mechanics, etc. Still have to communicate with their clients in written communication
A3: Cereal box and Menus - for discriptive writing. Bulleted for technicial instructions... for the visually driven
A2: writing requires all Ss to think & leads to more complex responses
A3: I love using for writing! Great short questions to start the day!
A3 I am big on reflections we all should take the time to reflect on what happened thru the day
A3- @ the EC level, writing begins w/ scribbles & pics to letters and words. It is amazing to see S growth by the end of the K yr!
A3: We've created a student generated school newsfeed that will eventually include all subject areas. https://t.co/AuCWf7gTvP
A3: tweets, blog posts, letters, reviews, etc. we cover it all!
A3: Writing to explore thinking, reflect on learning, explain learning, to analyze, to evaluate a topic, to ask a cute girl out...
A3 I love the idea of reflective writing, thanks to . Have Ss reflect on their learning in writing.
As ELL tchr, writing is last domain to be successful and need to writefor different purpose. https://t.co/A1Ax6Al9z4
That is awesome, History and ELA should always support each other, shows value in learning
A3: We've created a student generated school newsfeed that will eventually include all subject areas. https://t.co/obTAWUfWO7
I have me kids do slams too. They love it! https://t.co/WTvE6Rmirb
A3: I have them write songs, raps, poetry, narratives, commercials, I love poetry slams, plays, etc.
A2: Thoughts translated to written words in all subjects builds vocabulary and spoken words
A3: it may look a lil different on the kinder level, all kinds of writing happen. Anything Ss "read" they can write.
A3. I have started to include advocacy writing assignments... Donors.. Congressmen.. Principals. Superintendents
I'd love to know how you incorporate slams. How do you teach this to the kids? https://t.co/D0yOlAy5i7
I have me kids do slams too. They love it! https://t.co/WTvE6Rmirb
A3: I have them write songs, raps, poetry, narratives, commercials, I love poetry slams, plays, etc.
favorite writing pieces in math was a RAFT- love/hate letter from a decimal to a fraction. Ss had deep understanding & creativity
A3 In first grade we tell and write "math stories", write science reports or observations, write fiction stories, book reports...
A3 Not all writing must be evaluated.
Exit tickets are great insight to day’s lesson. Ask 4 I wonder questions following lessons
A3 digital writing allows us to combine words with images, words with audio, with video; making memes a GREAT activity: make & share
A3 Write in your journal everything you learned and how you feel about it.
A3: I have my kids back up their claims. They declare things to me all the time, so I ask "So what?" And they rise to the occasion.
A3) Media releases. For when you make them famous.
A3 Short writes, essays, explanations of mathematical problems, lab reports, etc.
If you have students writing songs in your classes make sure they fit a music structure. Melodically and rhythmically.
Love the literacy skills being learned in our broadcasting class.
A3b menus, stories, reports, plays, journals, bios, magazines, the possibilities are endless
A3 In primary grades, it helps for students to write in a journal what did they learn today.
. Can do this for art classes. Dont just create art. Write proposal to win competitive art project that meets criteria
A3: Something new I want to try this year: having them reflect on what they learned.
I think this is what scares non ELA teachers most...the grading load. https://t.co/Q8RcPw3Dlv
A3 Not all writing must be evaluated.
Exit tickets are great insight to day’s lesson. Ask 4 I wonder questions following lessons
A4: I have write down stuff I need to remember.
A3 So I'm a big fan of visual note-taking or sketchnoting...to me, that's writing too...what do you all think?
You all are ahead of the game: Answering some of my Qs before I've posted them. is awesome!
also she was state commissioner managing difficult education climate.
A4: Key to synthesizing learning. Loved learning how to sketch note as a way of writing at by
A4- Writing gets students thinking about their learning, huge impact on thinking critically!
A3: I look at PE and they could have the Ss come up with a new game, write rules, regulations, and officiating, playing surface, etc
A4) "Reading is the inhale, writing is the exhale." Don't make your students hold their breaths all hour.
A4: it makes students have to (gasp) think about the material and communicate that thinking https://t.co/G9EKIpx2Zm
LOVE this!! Math and writing...depending on the menu type could be social studies too. https://t.co/gMujdHzWmd
A3: Cereal box and Menus - for discriptive writing. Bulleted for technicial instructions... for the visually driven
"So what?" is the best follow up question of all time! https://t.co/cZ3DwL7bvH
A3: I have my kids back up their claims. They declare things to me all the time, so I ask "So what?" And they rise to the occasion.
A4: Allows Ss to express themselves, dev a deeper unders of subj, can edit, rewrite to understand end prod. https://t.co/owljKgj3af
A4: It can spark curiosity, narrow a topic, clarify a topic, reflect, explore, communicate! https://t.co/JabjeXrtcJ
This is an excellent way to express thinking, and look for areas that have been missed, have holes. https://t.co/qrhW6iV5nt
. Can do this for art classes. Dont just create art. Write proposal to win competitive art project that meets criteria
A4 a record of thought that Ss can come back to to correct or expand upon
A4: We use it as a means to assess, but I believe it can be used to help students understand how they learn. https://t.co/o9k1Nip5e3
A4 It helps to sort and process info.
A2) Every subject requires communication. Ss need to know how writing changes depending upon what you are trying to say and to whom.
A4 shows Ts and Ss what they understand and what misconceptions there may be
A4 writing is a great way to model the learning PROCESS: writing, feedback, revision, more writing, more feedback, more revision :-)
A4 For me, writing is about organizing...I'm a bit squirrelly so writing helps me process the information in a meaningful way!
Just what I was thinking. Nothing like writing to help a T see what a child gets, and doesn't. https://t.co/tZmCddyjtC
A4 shows Ts and Ss what they understand and what misconceptions there may be
A4: In the role of literacy, writing should come after speaking and listening and then reading. The latter two are foundational.
A4) It makes the Ss formulate ideas to communicate which can cultivate creativity, and more understanding.
A4: Writing > Reading > Communication > Learning > Thinking > Problem solving
A4 Writing stirs the thinking and is part of cognitive awareness. S's need to know what they are thinking and learning.
A4: it brings it to life. Provides a visual representation of your learning. & also provides you with something to reference later.
Love how our new standards follow this pattern. https://t.co/jiJslyUg2h
A4: In the role of literacy, writing should come after speaking and listening and then reading. The latter two are foundational.
A4) Writing helps organize, connect, solidify and communicate what the learning is.
Same! https://t.co/NFKwtNRS2L
A4 For me, writing is about organizing...I'm a bit squirrelly so writing helps me process the information in a meaningful way!
A4: It is the foundation that goes hand in hand with reading, valuable for our Ss to get their ideas across in writing
I love how you mention that writing gives a reference for later. Can also be used for learning portfolios. https://t.co/vLNtSLF84t
A4: it brings it to life. Provides a visual representation of your learning. & also provides you with something to reference later.
A4) It allows students to put their thoughts in a tangible form so they can be communicated and reflected upon.
A4: writing has a major role in expression/communication of ideas in school & the real world & is a top job skill reqmt
A4 Ss need 2 learn 2 decipher info not just hunt & seek on a wkst.Real world isn't worksheets, it's THINKING https://t.co/ZcjUmfieba
sometimes by writing, things fall into place and begin to make sense
A4 helps to analyze and organize thoughts and concepts
A4 I believe writing leads to deeper understanding of information, give Ss voice and audience.
A4 feedback. revision, reflection can drive writing process; then you are teaching WRITERS, not just writing https://t.co/6uGAiRokKJ
When my students leave me at the end of the year they have a writing notebook full of learning. https://t.co/VJoL9PuLF1
I love how you mention that writing gives a reference for later. Can also be used for learning portfolios. https://t.co/vLNtSLF84t
A4: it brings it to life. Provides a visual representation of your learning. & also provides you with something to reference later.
I was thinking the same thing!
Ss write menus to incorporate defin into concept. Ex: Big Bang Burger a galactic bite that will explode in ur mouth! .
A4: Writing is huge. Thinking critically enough to translate thoughts into structural prose is a very deep DOK skill.
A3) The list is too long! Formal, informal, social, visual, spontaneous, planned...the list goes on!
A5 I save the grammar stuff for the editing process. As a non-ELA T, perhaps your focus is more on content, than conventions?
A4: Writing gives T's more accurate information than any multiple choice test can give
A5: I'm not sure what being a 'grammar expert' has to do with anything - well, other than grammar, I suppose...
Writing takes the learning and gives the student something to hang onto instead of just In their mind. concrete learning.
A5: I often tell kids I a not grading the grammar but I will make notes about it.
A5: Focus mainly on the content. Leave editing for later
A5: There are all SORTS of things to look for in wriitng other than grammar. I'd put that pretty low on the list, actually.
That was my thought, but some Ts might be concerned they're not "qualified" to teach writing bec. of grammar https://t.co/f2OhBnsye3
A5: I'm not sure what being a 'grammar expert' has to do with anything - well, other than grammar, I suppose...
A5 we are ALL learners: so learn about language side by side with your students, be inquisitive, find answers...keep on learning :-)
A5: It's about critically thinking, not being grammatically correct.
A3: Teachers can include quick writes, journaling, note taking, performance assessments, & feedback to peers.
then I think that teacher should not be teaching writing. YOU have to be an expert
A5 Every teacher should know enough about the English language to make a writing assignment and to model the process.
A5: Should be able to teach & assign writing w/in their content. Math can have Ss write word problems, etc https://t.co/1vCrPvxHT9
A5: the grammar doesn’t have to be the focus…doesn’t always even need to be evaluated
I agree! Ss must get their ideas onto paper. Then grammar can be dealt with at a later stage. https://t.co/sVoR31uXHk
A5: There are all SORTS of things to look for in wriitng other than grammar. I'd put that pretty low on the list, actually.
A5 Work with your English T in a cross curriculum project. Let them help you with the grammar.
A5) It's great time to use those networking connections and get ideas. I figure I'll give my best on grammar and ask if need be.
A5) The same way I (Eng T) assign a passage about genetics w/out being a Sci T. Maximize your expertise and minimize your ignorance.
Okay, didn’t every teacher get a degree. Doesn’t that mean we all had to write papers so should know enough about grammar
A5:Having rubrics, I don't think you need to be a grammar experts, very few adults and Ts are experts, more about mastery of subject
A5 Grammar is important but sometimes the writing process is what really matters, not the final product!
A5: As a math T I find my Ss have easier time with writing when they know I'm not worried about the grammar. Just want them writing
A5 I teach stream of consciousness. It isn't just a way to think, but a way to write. No grammar check required.
Absolutely. We worry that we're supposed to micro-obsess over every little thing instead of choosing priorities!
A5: Exit tickets, reflections, blogging, journaling
A6: it is about the ideas not the format, my struggle is getting ss to read what they wrote b4 turning in https://t.co/lhh4162Ni5
So hard to get back in the groove but I know I need to join my peeps even if I'm late!
A5 In MS model this is a great opportunity to collaborate with ELA to do a team project/assignment
a5: While grammar is important - We all need to get out of the habit of assessing writing primarily on grammar. Content > Grammar
A5: They are college graduates; they know well enough to assess the real objective: the response to ???? https://t.co/xSoEVvydhv
A5: Start w/ content. Team up with an teacher that has same Ss and turn in one paper. One grades content, the other grammar.
A5: I'm not a math expert either and I teach math. I do the best I can. And I let them b expressive &have freedom in their writing.
gave me problems as a non expert. Tried to make sure Ss had read or had a true understanding of subject https://t.co/YGHup6AxPj
Not all teachers are confident with their own grammar abilities. https://t.co/nstMEIUY7w
A5 Every teacher should know enough about the English language to make a writing assignment and to model the process.
Sorry, i just hate it when we act like we can’t be competent about the basics. Won’t get on a tangent again
A5) The same way we expect Ss to. Do the best you can, and get help when needed. Use the same resources the Ss have.
A5: The grammar doesn’t have to be the focus
A4: Ss should grapple w/big ideas, interact w/complex text, collaborate w/peers to discuss those ideas, and write about it.
A5 focus on the message/info Ss share in writing more than the grammar if this is cause for concern
A5 Dive in and get started! It's okay to learn with them. The more you write the better you'll get.
If we ask students to write to learn about our students, teachers need to read them, not make this just a project to turn in.
Nothing like a dissertation to teach you that... https://t.co/aEuyJkLwJZ
A5 Dive in and get started! It's okay to learn with them. The more you write the better you'll get.
A5: For the record, I LOVE the question. I think I scared some of the new people w/ my responses... sorry!
EXACTLY! And Ts should be writing with their students! https://t.co/Ifc2zSRz0R
A5 Dive in and get started! It's okay to learn with them. The more you write the better you'll get.
A5: Not a grammar expert but I will be having Ss read/respond and discuss. Imo grammar shouldn't always be the focus (Ex- Twitter)
A5: it is about the ideas not the format, my struggle is getting ss to read what they wrote b4 turning in https://t.co/lhh4162Ni5
We love it when you're scary. https://t.co/8YW4mVdWuR
A5: For the record, I LOVE the question. I think I scared some of the new people w/ my responses... sorry!
a5: Use rubrics that minimize impact of grammar on grade. Rubrics should tie directly to learning goal.
confident or not, that is our jobs
A5: Now, it IS appropriate to let Ss know what you ARE looking for, if there will be assessment involved.
A5: Never a bad time to create "Grammar Masters" in class. They get black belts for good grammar and then become helpers
A5b I like the idea of learning along side. If we identify as lifelong learners, we shouldn't be afraid to say I don't know
A5: TEAMWORK! I've worked closely w/the English Ts @ my schools to help Ss with grammar/mechanics in other subject areas.
A5) If our 43rd President (GWB) can do it, ANYONE can. Just write! Let your thoughts flow.
. It also pounds hard the emphasis on persuasive writing in .
not just the new people! Geesh!
A6: I'm all for using our time well, but as long as Ss are engaged and the time is well-spent, I'm not worried about how MUCH.
I love doing this and sometimes even come up with good stuff! https://t.co/kqWfExD7aZ
EXACTLY! And Ts should be writing with their students! https://t.co/Ifc2zSRz0R
A5 Dive in and get started! It's okay to learn with them. The more you write the better you'll get.
A6: Using Google Docs and have Ss share with comment only, have them do 1 part and then switch to a new S
A5: In other subjects the writing doesn't have to be about the grammar. It's about mastering the content.
Exactly! We have to show them what to do when they aren't experts. https://t.co/bauw3vPyeL
A5b I like the idea of learning along side. If we identify as lifelong learners, we shouldn't be afraid to say I don't know
A5: I'm big on focusing on what I wanted them to write about. I teach freshmen, so I'm just happy when they write for me.
A4 FTR, I think asking Ss to peer edit/review can help those Ts who are feeling shaky with their grammar skills.
Hey - PEDAGOGY IS NOT PRETTY.
You are the teacher You should have your day mapped out to max time Not saying you can't be flexible https://t.co/xRRjoufcan
a6) We use online tools (google sheets) for peer review and its homework after the first time.
A6: limit the task and focus more on content of writing. Quality over quantity!
A5: Our preoccupation with writing has ruined so many Ss' experience with writing. Writing is not about grammar. continued...
a6: Don't. It should take some time.
A6) Work with your Eng teachers! We would love to share the load & have them do some of that in our classes! It's ok. We don't bite.
A6 I use the suggestion feature in Google Docs so Ss can work together to edit each others' papers.
A6 Help Ss set writing goals setting "flexible" deadlines.
A6) It doesn't have to be and most often doesn't need to be real lengthy to get it done.
A6: I don’t think peer review can’t take up too much time. It is another opportunity to deepen learning. Timers fix any time issue.
A6 make it routine. The more Ss do it the more comfortable they become with the process= saving time.
Agreed! Although, I think there are some Eng Ts who do bite. LOL! https://t.co/YHTv9fyJfT
A6) Work with your Eng teachers! We would love to share the load & have them do some of that in our classes! It's ok. We don't bite.
A6 Group writing assignments so that all Ss get to contribute and less papers to grade.
A6 I know we have to make the most of our time, but if learning is happening, let it happen! I can always re-adjust lesson plans
Now, at some point Ss need to understand that good grammar is a tool of clarity, tone, and intent - it MATTERS, just not #1 -
Timers are perfect. They can be embedded into Google Slides, too! https://t.co/1OrJ2hosjZ
A6: I don’t think peer review can’t take up too much time. It is another opportunity to deepen learning. Timers fix any time issue.
A6 just set one day aside for peer reviews. 2 for a research paper.
A6: Writing doesn't have to be long to be effective. Build slowly for non ELA teachers. .
Oh, yes. Some bite really hard. Others bark and bite.
A6: Do any of you use student driven rubrics to help with this? Are there good ones you could share with me?
A6 How about audio feedback? integrates w/ Google to encourage feedback
A6- I'm a fan of timers and group collab, this helps understand the thought process of others and reflect/revise our work quickly
A6) Use a simple and concise rubric that all students understand.
A6 if discussion and effort is about content I don't think it can be too much. Get collaborating
Agreed. and those components you mention change slightly depending on audience. https://t.co/CtUj6cijvD
Now, at some point Ss need to understand that good grammar is a tool of clarity, tone, and intent - it MATTERS, just not #1 -
Anyone have student driven rubrics? https://t.co/u7ytBW93Bn
A6: Do any of you use student driven rubrics to help with this? Are there good ones you could share with me?
A6 It might take a lot of time at first, when they are first learning. Being the teacher is a great way for students to learn.
If we minimize the importance of grammar, isn't that doing the Ss a disservice? At least in formal writing.
A5, part 2: We focus on grammar bc grammar is the only concrete thing in writing. I can point to a place and say "comma goes here."
A7: That varies widely w/ purpose. So, I guess first and foremost, IT SHOULD HAVE AN ACTUAL PURPOSE.
A4: writing is your thoughts in a transferable form... There's a Sagan quote about books that wld fit here https://t.co/PjfEiukWUZ
Good question. Comments? https://t.co/imZB5srH02
If we minimize the importance of grammar, isn't that doing the Ss a disservice? At least in formal writing.
who has a better chance of landing the job? Well written, error free resume or one with grammar spelling unorganized one?
a7: the best writing assignments are those where students have real audiences other than teacher (other classmates, public...)
A6: Except when designed 2 teach certain aspects of writing, Student writing should be a very natural part of S engagement.
A7 I think 1 is that makes Ss learn something else WHILE writing & creates good discussion in my classroom https://t.co/pboXQeoV8k
A7: That being said, the purpose could be purely cathartic, for information crunching, to practice techniques, or whatever
A7: something the student can connect with personally. Something that connects to prior knowledge.
A7) One that engages Ss and helps them reach your purpose of giving the assignment.
A7: One where Ss are engaged and excited to write about, and where they go into higher DOK levels
A7 I think the key is that there is an audience. That's why I love blogging and movie making!
We need to make sure we balance ruining their love of writing forever w/ ruining their love of reading forever, so it's fair.
Final edit/peer reviews can be for grammar. Let the ideas flow on first draft. Rubrics shld help. https://t.co/mJwPedgJo3
Good question. Comments? https://t.co/imZB5srH02
If we minimize the importance of grammar, isn't that doing the Ss a disservice? At least in formal writing.
A7- any assignment where Ss can get their thoughts out and reflect on those thoughts. Quality>Quantity
A7: Something that allows us to assess and also gives the Ss a chance to think outside of the box a bit. https://t.co/2tOUemihk3
I agree! This is why I have Ss share with another S in class. They publish virtually all writing this way. https://t.co/syZ10nkkJk
A7 I think the key is that there is an audience. That's why I love blogging and movie making!
A7 Writing on a topic of interest for a real life audience...more than just an assignment!
A7: Purpose and relevant context and final audience (not teacher) for the assignment. Not just added work for students.
A very wise chick told me she never grades writing for more than about 2 things at a time - grammar, content, flow, paragraphs, etc.
Agreed! Authentic, purpose, published. https://t.co/ZMwCvfk2cd
a7: the best writing assignments are those where students have real audiences other than teacher (other classmates, public...)
A7: Something that will have the Ss wanting to write more! (Like snakes)
A prime example of the republican-dominated legislature's mismanagement of state budget- 730 new emergency teaching certificates.
Depends on the goal - the feedback we give students on writing should be related to learning goal. https://t.co/VGGsRN44bL
Good question. Comments? https://t.co/imZB5srH02
If we minimize the importance of grammar, isn't that doing the Ss a disservice? At least in formal writing.
blogging and vlogging are an interesting cousin to writing...Do they help or hurt in your opinion? https://t.co/RsL5AtK4Z4
A7 I think the key is that there is an audience. That's why I love blogging and movie making!
A7 I'm going with real audience too. That always seems to get my Ss to a higher level.
A7 something their interested in. Last yr, girl wrote her argumentative essay over iPhone vs. android.
A7: same things that make any assignment good…engagement, excitement, purpose
A7 something Ss are engaged and creative with and Ts can assess their understanding of the concept
. Not minimizing, just not the primary focus. We edit before publishing. Don't want to turn Ss off to writing
A7) Ss have the foundation to complete it, it is related to their learning, it is focused but offers Ss freedom in their expression.
Haha! I love this idea. https://t.co/m2CV31cz44
A7 something their interested in. Last yr, girl wrote her argumentative essay over iPhone vs. android.
A7 Did it create an opportunity for back and forth analyzing between Ss & T, Ss & Ss?
A7 writing project broad enough to let Ss use interest and talents to want to write. Let them be creative, push the edge of page.
U know the answer. I'm not saying it's not important. I'm saying heightened focus on it hurts the S experience.
A7: Purposeful communication. Ss want to share, I guide them through writing
A7) Would someone pay money for it on Teachers Pay Teachers to replicate it in their classroom? If so, it was probably pretty good.
I think help, especially for student engagement! Plus it's a real-world skill! https://t.co/HYAAPLWCAq
blogging and vlogging are an interesting cousin to writing...Do they help or hurt in your opinion? https://t.co/RsL5AtK4Z4
A7 I think the key is that there is an audience. That's why I love blogging and movie making!
A8: That's tied to purpose. I only point out grammar/spelling in terms of clarity and effectiveness, for example.
A8:Does the writing master the learning objective that was suppose to be covered
A8: What was the purpose of the writing? How well did they fulfill that purpose? Rubrics might help. https://t.co/e3JOIMlYE6
A8: I'm usually looking for a clear thesis and decently organized, valid supporting details. But they KNOW that going in.
A4: Writing broadens a student's understanding, builds upon prior knowledge & teaches effective communication.
A8- Should be graded on content and effort for short responses. Rubrics are always helpful for longer assignments!
A8 Whats wrong w/working w/the ELA T to grade the writing while the other T grades content knowledge?
A8: every subject should have a writing component. But it doesn't have to be graded, just needs feedback.
A6: Students need feedback. They don't need feedback on every piece they write. Feedback doesn't have to be exhaustive.
A8) With an emphasis on the content but also keeping mind of the grammar as much as you can.
I started scoring with AP, so there are specific standards for each level - Ss earn a score, not lose points for a grade
A8: Ts should grade writ in all courses. Not all Ss will be auth. Need to know how to write in their field. https://t.co/6BWLFy1O9g
Ill add - its frustrating to try to hit a goal and get negative feedback on something unrelated to the goal https://t.co/04rVDG7Zyy
Depends on the goal - the feedback we give students on writing should be related to learning goal. https://t.co/VGGsRN44bL
Good question. Comments? https://t.co/imZB5srH02

it will hurt more when they lost chances due to poor writing
I think this is an excellent idea. As an ELA T, I'd love to work with Ts from other areas. I'd learn, too! https://t.co/dfXUDFyp7H
A8 Whats wrong w/working w/the ELA T to grade the writing while the other T grades content knowledge?
A8: Teachers should model writing first. So whatever expectations you set forth when you model is what you should assess.
A8 Detailed rubrics put the T & Ss mind at ease at where to begin in the evaluation process.
A8 Non ELA grade should be content and understanding. ELA could give grade for mechanics..great way to connect subjects.
I'm looking forward to watching! (And tuning in to your discussion, too.)
A8 it should be graded based on how well Ss met the requirements of the assignment
A8: Rubrics that focus on content and feedback. Collab w/ other Ts to create one?
A8: Grade for your subject's content. Provide feedback on grammar and future clarity.
A8 Focus on content, did it address your prompt, is it written in complete sent, work w ELA Ts 4 a rubric https://t.co/C2nNVnoVIG
True, but if you are doing formal writing, shouldn't grammar be part of the goal?
A8 I agree with . Rubrics are everything.
A8:Grading maybe based on the discussion spurred by the S's writing. Tie all that literacy stuff up 2gether https://t.co/hbnkluWk6J
Grades are not part of the learning process. Writing in math helps them learn math. The grade doesn't.
You should not grade what you haven’t taught. (for example) So if you haven’t taught grammar, leave it alone.
This... https://t.co/NCylGYyy9K
A8 Whats wrong w/working w/the ELA T to grade the writing while the other T grades content knowledge?
Qualitative rubrics (not Quantitative) tied to learning objective. It is also fine not to grade it.
I have read some of my blogs to my students. I model the importance of having a voice and a stance. https://t.co/r6ALgIc862
A8: Teachers should model writing first. So whatever expectations you set forth when you model is what you should assess.
YES!!! https://t.co/tOdB8OCraY
You should not grade what you haven’t taught. (for example) So if you haven’t taught grammar, leave it alone.
A8: for science,in ms, I am grading for content and ideas. Can't start with "it" or "because" Pretty basic https://t.co/EptuuDEmlG
Q9 How can teachers incorporate writing and peer review into their classes without taking up too much time? https://t.co/w08XvwiU4n
A8: My "grading" now is written feedback. Later I will have Ss take it home for Ps to read and feedback for bonus points.
A8: That being said, rubrics aren't the end all, be all when it comes to writing. Just let them write without one, it's freeing.
Have to skip out a little early. Great chat have a great week
I did not grade the Mathematical Autobiographies I asked my students to write. I responded to them. https://t.co/WuLQU1E34x
Grades are not part of the learning process. Writing in math helps them learn math. The grade doesn't.
I gave my history T husband a simple rubric for his essays, but outlines objectives for HIS Ss.He assesses TOTALLY different than me
Hello, I'm Anthony and I teach math in Stillwater.
A8 writers need FEEDBACK, not grades... I never put grades on writing. see Hacking Assessment + https://t.co/LZAIePoK48
Modeling the “blog” style is important as well. It’s become this new casual, yet professional form of discourse.
A7: Connection to reading+connection to big ideas+open exchange and collaboration=good writing assignment
A8) Grade the way you do everything else. Did Ss do what you asked them to do correctly?
A8 They should be graded on the merits of content understanding.
A9 Quick writes that pertain to subject...set a timer and go!
A9 I have had students rotate, see how students solved a problem, respond with writing. A little like musical chairs.
A9- be mindful of time and plan ahead for flexibility with written assignments and peer review. Student collaboration is important!
A9: What's too much time? My Ss write everyday to varying degrees. Variety is important I think. https://t.co/NwSkJcoObq
When kids don't like a new policy, I have them write a formal proposal and a solution instead of griping https://t.co/r6ALgIc862
A8: Teachers should model writing first. So whatever expectations you set forth when you model is what you should assess.
A9: If writing is a window into Ss thinking, shouldn't we give them think time?
I am so enjoying the reading. I can’t remember to write a response ;-)
A8 feedback from peers is very valuable! help students learn how to give/get feedback: https://t.co/zlhZvQD4Zk & use
A8) There are so many writing styles where rules of grammar really don't matter. Focus on those when you create the assignment.
A9: quick writes, exit slips, blogging, etc. all can be done quickly, but be relevant.
A#7. A writing assignment that ignites creative thinking & expression & is so important to the S that his effort multiplies 4 effect.
A8 definitely don't grade with a bright red sharpie. No one wants to try writing again after that! Constructive edits.
Ss are turned away for poor writing skills. What isn’t recognized is that those kids need foundational help.
I had to make a last minute edit, and saved an old question with the wrong file name. Ghosts in the machine.. https://t.co/rvaZKtRwsz
Didn't... didn't we have this question already? Oh god, I've been watching too much Star Trek. I'm in a time loop...
Bigotry of soft expectations is worrisome. Hurt feelings should not be an excuse to not help student master content i.e. Writing
A10 Not gonna lie, I get some really great and out of the box writing prompts from Pinterest.
Good thing Wilson Rawls didn't give up in spite of poor writing skills! https://t.co/8KdE4gAvnS
Ss are turned away for poor writing skills. What isn’t recognized is that those kids need foundational help.
A7 good writing assignment = students enjoy AND learn + teacher enjoys AND learns; if you are bored, Ss probably even more bored!!!
Sure, and that's why we have to give them time to work through the process.
A10 I think anything Ts provides to their Ss is a viable resource,Purdue Owl, College Board,Kelly Gallegher https://t.co/WpVogARuC8
So, readicide/writicide! Of courseicide! https://t.co/P9LgVWisKW
We need to make sure we balance ruining their love of writing forever w/ ruining their love of reading forever, so it's fair.
Me. Too. I love perusing Pinterest for writing things. https://t.co/4DqtQ7ZrD8
A10 Not gonna lie, I get some really great and out of the box writing prompts from Pinterest.
Students need to do research, cooperating with different teachers such as English & History, where students get credit in both.
A10: would love to find some on the level beyond pinterest and Tpt
LOLOL Love the Star Trek references!
a10: TECH - devices or apps w/ talk to text to help Ss get started without fear of spelling. Get the idea down 1st, edit later.
A5: Through reader response journals!! A great way to get students feeling safe to write & ask questions.
I encourage every teacher, esp MS & HS, to assign students to write a thank you note to see if they can do it.
A10) Pintrest, networking, Google, and anything I might randomly pull out of nowhere.
I agree on the small part, but not the "only" part. Presentation matters in formal writing, and that includes grammar.
A10- paper/pencil, read/respond, iPad/chromebook (Notes, Paper, Padlet, Seesaw, etc), sidewalk chalk. The possibilities are endless!
A10 One of the cool things about Google Docs is the "voice to text" option. It allows all students to participate in writing!
A5: Go to the Writing Across the Curriculum Project, which is designed for this very issue. https://t.co/hVqpwJbc4W
A10: Tunes, lyrics to all kinds songs are a great resource to tie the arts, writing, and meaning - all around a content topic.
Pinterest's GREAT! I teach students specific Pinterest skills: annotating pins, doing research w/ Pinterest: https://t.co/Q52CT3Ymob
A10 I have Ss create their own class style book -- including presentation and convention information they need to remember.
who's saying anything about giving up???
I missed the last question. Was talking to a parent.
A5: Draw a line under sixth line of writing; only grade grammar to that line. After that, no more grammar correcting.
I've heard much the same. I try to do this, to save me some valuable grading time. https://t.co/AlEfGbiDWb
A very wise chick told me she never grades writing for more than about 2 things at a time - grammar, content, flow, paragraphs, etc.
. This lets Ss know that they do have probs in their grammar, but does not distract from wider writing objectives
. This lets Ss know that they do have probs in their grammar, but does not distract from wider writing objectives
I just don't like the overemphasis. When S's don't get feedback on ideas - but there paper is covered in red
On a Sunday evening? Your time? What? Teachers don't do that!! ! https://t.co/guTsWevtbv
I missed the last question. Was talking to a parent.
May I just say, "I love school!" That is -- for those of you familiar with the phrase -- "The Debbie Way"! 🚲
I would love your class! Pinterest is my favorite!
Super critical that Ss have ample choice in reading/writing so it remains something they love!! https://t.co/dBhq5CTDOP
We need to make sure we balance ruining their love of writing forever w/ ruining their love of reading forever, so it's fair.
The initial point was that ppl don’t realize that writing is about more than grammar.
And if you don’t realize that, then sometimes you give up when you run into bad grammar.
A10: The resources are endless! There's power in a pencil and technology!
ok let it go please You don't need to feel the way I do
A5: I might add: If u r not strong in grammar, GET STRONG IN GRAMMAR. Personal PD... growth... lifetime learners, etc.
Agreed. Underemphasis is a problem, but so is the opposite. Finding the balance is key.
I'm just going to make a plug for teaching video game design...writing is an essential element plus you know it's pretty fun too!
Contemplating how this could make a super grammar lesson. Focused effort on grammar. Nail it and write on. https://t.co/9dJTPMhVCz
A5: Draw a line under sixth line of writing; only grade grammar to that line. After that, no more grammar correcting.
I love these because they can focus on the expression of thought, not the rules.
A10 is a great resource. Had a typo.
I agree, I always walk away with ideas that I can use the next day. Love their workshops.
A11) Repeat of my A10, So many online resources. It's a great thing
A5 far better than grammar: study linguistics... linguistics is FUN; read David Crystal, John McWhorter, Guy Deutsch, so many greats
A11: We have great admin at ! If we need anything, we ask and they do their best to get it for us!
Check out oldie-but-valid: Atwell's "in the Middle." Ss learn writing/grammar thru reading books they enjoy & responding in writing
A6: Do more informal writing. And use a timer!
Use the Twitters for writing resources and save/archive the things you find, share them with a friend and expand ideas.
A11 Apply for the ! It's Hogwarts for writing Ts, & we're all writing Ts.
If you don't already, I recommend following for ELA/writing ideas. He was a presenter at
