Simon, Sci T NE OH - I told a group of students I was proud to be their T and they were smart and going to do good things. There were smiles and the statement - Thank you, we don't hear that enough #ohedchat
What powerful words, and a good reminder to all of us to share those things we think but don't always share. They can make such a difference! #ohedchat
Tricia Ebner, gifted coordinator in NE Ohio. I told one of my teachers I think she's a rock star and appreciate all she does for our students. #ohedchat
That's so important--so often adolescents don't think about the fact that an awful lot of people around them are either going through the same thing, or did when they were a similar age. It's hard to feel so alone. #ohedchat
Ted, Middle School Principal, from MO. I met with a student to share a celebration for his success in his Engineering By Design Class (building and racing his car and winning)! #ohedchat
A1: In the digital age, Ss are connecting with each other in ways that have not been studied, are different from any other generation, and foreign to many. Ts are creating opportunities for Ss to find their face-to-face social and emotional time. #ohedchat
A1) Social emotional learning is key to students understanding their world and themselves. It helps kids work through the stuff that gets in the way of learning. Stephanie from NW Ohio here. K-5 GIS. #ohedchat
A1: "We are social creatures -- we have to engage with other people at home, at school, at work, at play, Success in life involves interacting with others. Social-emotional learning gives us the skills to make those interactions effective, respectful and enjoyable." #ohedchat
I saw some evidence of good SEL in a fourth grader this week, who greeted me with a smile and a cheerful "Good morning," and then asked me who I was subbing for, and then told me to have a good day. (I think I need to get into that building more often!) #ohedchat
A1: social-emotional learning is preparing them for life. We must articulate the importance of mental health and positive social-emotional experiences for kiddos. #ohedchat
A1 For elementary parents - learning to understand why and how we feel the way we do and understanding/having empathy for others as well as how to deal with life in a positive way #OhEdChat
Welcome, Stephanie! What a good point, that the social-emotional stuff can get in the way of learning if we don't help kids find and see ways to manage. #ohedchat
A1 cont'd: In addition to instructional piece, the Ts spend time getting to know their Ss in a professional and mutually respectful way. We have 90min blocks and a small school, we have the time and opp to ask a Ss how the BLANK event went #ohedchat
Those moments make a big difference. I always try to say “hey friend” or refer to students as my “fave.” That isn’t to be disengenuous, but to remind them that they matter. #OhEdChat
Q2: What are the benefits of including social-emotional learning in our schools? What positive changes have you seen in students and the overall school atmosphere since prioritizing SE learning? #ohedchat
A1. You can go one step further to explain how you set up a center/classroom to assist disregulated students return to the regular classroom setting. #ohedchat
I don't think our students hear often enough that they matter. I know I made the assumption that they knew they mattered to me because I was putting so much energy and time into them and their learning--but they didn't always realize it. #ohedchat
A2: One benefit has been making it OK for students to talk about their struggles – I think we need to shatter that image of perfection end the stigma of needing help. #ohedchat
Q2: What are the benefits of including social-emotional learning in our schools? What positive changes have you seen in students and the overall school atmosphere since prioritizing SE learning? #ohedchat
A2 Students are learning to be more accepting of each other and more empathetic. We do Mindful Music and Circle Time every morning - kids learn to celebrate with each other and also be supportive of each other too! #OhEdChat
A2: When kids understand how to interact with others in a positive way and can show empathy in difficult situations it builds community which fosters shared trust. THAT’S when learning happens in a BIG WAY. #ohedchat
A2: social-emotional learning and positive experiences exponentially improves school culture and interpersonal relationships. Clubs, organizations, and authentic learning experiences that contribute to the “whole” child. #ohedchat
A2 Teachers talk with kids about taking risks and failing forward. It is ok to try new things even if they don't go right the first time. Students are learning not to feel bad about their efforts, but to celebrate them! #ohedchat
A2. Benefits can easily extend to our staff. We can see how these supports help our students succeed. Our staff also learns the importance of meeting the needs of our disregulated students #ohedchat
A2: The students already feel the school is a safe space, emotionally and physically. I have seen a little uptick in positive in the hallways. The SEL model has not officially been adopted, but is practiced by many of the fac/staff. #ohedchat
RT Q2: What are the benefits of including social-emotional learning in our schools? What positive changes have you seen in students and the overall school atmosphere since prioritizing SE learning? #ohedchat
A2: (got here late-thought I’d jump in) I’ve seen a huge difference in how my students support one another & how they problem solve! As a 1st grade teacher it’d be very easy for me to solve most of their problems myself or manage/discipline and move on. But I don’t! #ohedchat
A2 we also just started the "house system" like what is used in the Ron Clark Academy to continue to building the idea of community and serving. The kids are loving it and it allows them to really get to know others outside of their class/grade #ohedchat
That sense of belonging and being cared for is amazing---I've been amazed at what my students can do when we have the kind of community that exudes that kind of atmosphere. #ohedchat
A2: Being mindful of SEL is empowering - for Ts and Ss who can now have a common vocabulary and a set of tools and strategies to use when working peer to peer, in groups or on their own #Ohedchat
A2: Relationships matter most … kids & kids; kids & adults; adults & adults! The benefits of building these can be seen and felt in every interaction. #ohedchat
A1: Social & emotional skills...students learn about how to use their words, to recognize their emotions, how to regulate themselves, it might be about learning to calm themselves. #ohedchat
Q3: What are ways you are incorporating social-emotional learning into your classroom or school? What approaches seem to be most successful why? #ohedchat
A2: When kids understand how to interact with others in a positive way and can show empathy in difficult situations it builds community which fosters shared trust. THAT’S when learning happens in a BIG WAY. #ohedchat
Our Circle Time has had a big impact! We have had students share about struggles they are having & other students have physically gone over & held a hand, rubbed a back, place a hand on a back - showing support to the one struggling! These are elementary kids! LOVE! #ohedchat
A3: I’ve created a classroom culture around kindness (with lots of resource/activity support) & Zones of Regulation. It’s really helped how we talk about our emotions & how to support each other. #ohedchat
A2: Greater understanding and empathy for one another. Acceptance of the fact that we all have different needs. Greater self awareness for all. #ohedchat
A3: During my monthly Reading Day where I read to every class in the building I try to incorporate a new book with a strong SE message. I want students to see themselves in the characters! #ohedchat
A3: finding moments to celebrate with each other. Sharing personal accomplishments. Light-hearted banter with each other. As a professional, I wouldn’t want to work in a place that doesn’t have these moments - why would our students? #ohedchat
RT Q3: What are ways you are incorporating social-emotional learning into your classroom or school? What approaches seem to be most successful why? #ohedchat
A3) it’s a natural fit in a gifted class but I incorporate it mostly through our reading selections for #classroombookaday and our whole class read aloud. We talk through the situations the characters are experiencing and brainstorm how we could help them. #ohedchat
A3
As a principal, I read aloud to every classroom at least twice per year - I tend to bring books that have a lesson about caring for others or being kind to others - there is always a positive message. #OhEdChat
A3 We meet together every week - a community meeting- this is time to check in to see how “things” are going. We have traits that the whole school is working on each month- Feb. is acceptance month. #OhEdChat
I use @Headspace! Our building also has a sensory path in case our emotions (or body) are too much and they need a break! I also (🤣) have a fake dog that legit looks like a real one that they can take for walks. Sometimes they sit and talk to her. 😊 #Ohedchat
A2: We use https://t.co/8axuXQic6X which is a great social & emotional curriculum...has great resources to help kids! It is empowering for students as well as staff. It helps create a more positive school day! #ohedchat
Q2: What are the benefits of including social-emotional learning in our schools? What positive changes have you seen in students and the overall school atmosphere since prioritizing SE learning? #ohedchat
A3: There are times I've set the academic aside for a moment of "being real.," talking about what I hope for my students (that you build a life you find to be fulfilling, doing work that matters to you and you are proud of), or taking a moment to check in. #ohedchat
We use a Career Based Intervention approach for ALL students that focuses on skills needed to be successful in the workforce. Student Understanding how to react, how to present yourself, and how to surpass employer expectations is our goal! #ohedchat
Q3: What are ways you are incorporating social-emotional learning into your classroom or school? What approaches seem to be most successful why? #ohedchat
I also run a makerspace and try to have students work together as often as possible so that we have chances to use/practice SEL skills in meaningful ways. #ohedchat
Friday check-ins on index cards were powerful. Kids wrote out whatever they wanted me to know--they'd gotten a new video game, they were going to have a new baby brother/sister, the family planned a trip, they were confused about something. Moments of connection. #ohedchat
A4: I had two students working for me in the hall. A student walked by in tears, and they jumped into action. One went to check on the student; the other came to get me. #OhEdChat
A4: Our ED staff does an amazing job talking with students about expectations and how people may react in a variety of settings. Then IF the students end up in my office they can express what happened using a common vocabulary. #ohedchat

A4) once, years ago when I taught MS, I had a big tough football player write a persuasive piece drawing a parallel between the struggle of the LGBTQ community and the civil rights struggles of the sixties and counting. He didn’t want to read it in front of the class... #ohedchat
A4: I did a school-wide talk on the science of smiling and how it positively affects the smiler and the recipients of the smiles (“smiles change the world). 😊 That was two months ago and I still have kids who walk up to me to flash me a big smile. #ohedchat
A4: happens daily. Today was @GSPlayDay & a kid had a “tantrum” moment & the students knew he needed space. when he was ready, they were like it’s ok to be mad. Want to play now? AND he was even able to reflect on it while group when we talked about our day! #Ohedchat
I love that!!! I worked as a receptionist and secretary while in college, and that was part of my training: "Smile when you answer the phone--it comes through in your voice." #ohedchat
We started the year teaching kids mindful breathing. I have seen students tell others who are upset to take some shark, bee, lion breaths - love seeing them using strategies we have taught them. #ohedchat

Q5: What are the best ways to balance academics and social-emotional learning? How can we ensure we are integrating social-emotional learning in our classrooms on a daily basis? What does this look like and sound like? #ohedchat
A3: always try to model, through positive interactions with Ts and Ss, also take a genuine interest in Ss, We have a small school, I try to learn every Ss first name #ohedchat
What a great question! As we've been chatting tonight, I've thought a couple of times how my ungrad training didn't really prepare me for all of this, though my cooperating teacher did LOTS through student teaching. Definitely something to address #ohedchat
A5: Again, using literature is an easy way to hit both academic and SEL skills. Discussions in small groups, visuals, quick “mantras” or sayings... #ohedchat
A4: I was outside @ Recess, we were playing a game. I planned to use “Ro-Sham-Bo” as our tie breaker, but I had not used it yet w/my Ss. We had 2 kids who normally would have argued, right away they were able to resolve their own conflict! #ohedchat
A3: always try to model, through positive interactions with Ts and Ss, also take a genuine interest in Ss, We have a small school, I try to learn every Ss first name #ohedchat
A5: I have to say candid conversations at teachable moments. Today I was able to talk to a student about grade anxiety because he was asking about advanced classes next year. #OhEdChat
Q5: What are the best ways to balance academics and social-emotional learning? How can we ensure we are integrating social-emotional learning in our classrooms on a daily basis? What does this look like and sound like? #ohedchat
Today I had a parent call &thank r school 4 helping their child 2 become a successful & honorable student, child, &citizen! They were crying, so I started crying..bcs I know the journey that her child has taken &the successful future that’s now possible! #openingdoors#ohedchat
I think sometimes ELA teachers may have an easier time with this, but I've seen teachers in all content areas do amazing things. Music directors impress me to no end--they seem to pick up on things VERY quickly, even with 80+ students in the room at one time. #ohedchat
A4. When we led out staff PD on the subject of “Challenges vs. Escalations. Helping teachers understand the importance of remaining calm when a student argues with us or becomes confrontational. #OhEdChat
RT Q5: What are the best ways to balance academics and social-emotional learning? How can we ensure we are integrating social-emotional learning in our classrooms on a daily basis? What does this look like and sound like? #ohedchat
A4: Today a Ss came to lunch, like every other day...no one to sit with. A classmate saw the Ss’s sadness, moved to where she was sitting by herself and “pep talked” her thru her lunch! Thats SEL! #ohedchat
I agree but I think there is a way to integrate Read Alouds into every subject area... also, if you ever use games in your class, you can give feedback on game playing skills, how students speak to each other, etc. #ohedchat
A4: luckily in the school, I'm at there is a large service competent. Ss and Ts came together for a S who experienced a loss. The whole school pulled together for them. It was great to see #ohedchat
A5: Socratic seminars can give students the opportunity to run the discussion, including being responsible for inviting and including everyone's thoughts and ideas. There are social-emotional components built in alongside other aspects of learning. #ohedchat
A5: It’s less a balance & more integration. We need to be intentional about modeling and coaching our s’s with quality SEL moments through the curriculum. Literature. Functional problem solving. Perserverance. If they’re struggling, connect w/them. Show them you care. #OhEdChat
A5) It integrates into reading so well but remembering Maslow and the fact that they CAN’T learn if some of these other needs aren’t met first puts an urgency to it. I say make SEL a priority then do the rest. 😉 #ohedchat
A5: positive culture and climate, incorporating the SEL into every class, find 5 minutes to engage in positive, respectful, meaningful engagements, utilize some big projects to create global understandings, leverage technology to highlight positivity #ohedchat
A1 Learning how to respond to every day happenings and building that into your classroom. It empowers Ss to know how to handle their emotions and experiences out of the cr #OhEdChat
A4: Today a Ss came to lunch, like every other day...no one to sit with. A classmate saw the Ss’s sadness, moved to where she was sitting by herself and “pep talked” her thru her lunch! Thats SEL! #ohedchat
Absolutely! I've seen math teachers talk with kids about how to overcome fears of being wrong and take a risk in solving something difficult . . . so many opportunities across ALL subjects at all grade levels. #ohedchat
A5 Brunswick uses PRIDE (performance, respect, integrity, determination and effort) for our PBIS. @ehuthsimpson we turned that into a proclamation that defines those works for elementary kids that we say every morning - I agree - it is powerful! #ohedchat
A5: It looks like a family holiday event without the arguing!!! Jk lol! The Ss learn to have #empathy for one another, care about each other. We integrate with our https://t.co/8axuXQic6X curriculum, each grade level learns skills and builds on previous skills. #ohedchat
Q5: What are the best ways to balance academics and social-emotional learning? How can we ensure we are integrating social-emotional learning in our classrooms on a daily basis? What does this look like and sound like? #ohedchat
A5: Looks like lots of books, activities, kids engaging with one another bc of either specific teaching or organic moments. Sounds like students communicating, being able to express emotions & kind words. I feel as though it’s part of my curriculum. 🤷🏼♀️ #ohedchat
Ours is Every day in every way I show my Brunswick Pride. P - I do my very best, R - I respect myself and others, I- I am honest and truthful, D - I do my very best. E - I achieve what I set out to do. I am a Kidder Kid with PRIDE! #ohedchat
Happy to help and share! I spent 5 phenomenal years living and working on the east side before relocating to NE Ohio. Feel free to ask whenever! #ohedchat
A6: I love resources from Free Spirit Press. Especially loved the books written for tweens about dealing with stress, homework, etc. Even one called "How Rude," which is an etiquette guide for teens and tweens. #ohedchat
Join us for next week's #OHedchat. Our focus will be on Open Education Resources and Collaboration - And will feature the @infohio team as guest facilitators and the new Open Space OER platform for Ohio launching 2/13 at 12:15 during #OETC19@DrBDrost@TebnerEbner
We are about to post draft K-12 SEL standards for public comment. I hope everyone checks them out and provides comments. Your input is so important. I want to make these a valuable resource! #ohedchat
A6: I love the Zones of Regulation. I also love to use picture books as well. I like the podcast @cultofpedagogy for lots of different topics. #ohedchat
I'm looking forward to seeing them--and I know first-hand how seriously the public feedback is taken, so I want to encourage everyone to comment. Your voice IS heard and listened to. #ohedchat
#ohedchat The Ss use youtube clips from NGOs to highlight global issues, and the positive the NGOs can affect. They also utilize them to create videos/animations/etc about issues that matter to them (bioethics assignment, conservation assignment);
A6: UnSelfie (book), Zones of Regulation, tons of pic 📚, @actionhappiness@Headspace and a mindset that is willing to try & fail but not give up. I truly have noticed bc I’ve changed my mindset my classroom is a happier, kinder and more empathetic place. 😊🧀 I know 😆#ohedchat
This is glorious! My seniors don’t know it yet, but they’re writing thank you cards tomorrow for a speaker/presenter we had via Skype on Tuesday. #leadbyexample#ohedchat
A2 Overall, it improves learning in your classroom and school. When you build relationships, it creates a better classroom environment for all. Our Ss love our classroom table group/classroom competitions #OhEdChat
A4: Today a Ss came to lunch, like every other day...no one to sit with. A classmate saw the Ss’s sadness, moved to where she was sitting by herself and “pep talked” her thru her lunch! Thats SEL! #ohedchat
Cleveland Clinic had a really powerful video a few years ago about putting ourselves in others' shoes--setting aside our own thoughts to consider how someone else is feeling. I shared it with my Ss---extremely powerful. #ohedchat
#ohedchat for black history month last year members of the females achieving minority excellence (FAME) club strung together video clips of inspirational speeches by minority public figures. It was POWERFUL
If you get it--preview it--there is a part or two that is a bit more mature in nature. My MS kids loved the part about "things that don't exist"---like burps, belches, and flatulence. We should pretend we hear (and smell) nothing. #ohedchat
