The Breakfast Club – #BFC530 – is a 15 minute, 1 question Twitter chat every weekday. We chat in 4 timezones Mon-Fri – 5:30am Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Times. The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
Good morning, #bfc530 friends! Happy Friday! Thought I'd share a wonderful article about my (now former) school: https://t.co/WVzjSfn3Az that came out this week. Enjoy!
From my past, I worked at two boarding schools for years - and it was impossible to escape shop talk, as you might imagine. #bfc530 That was one of things that caused me to move out of that kind of school.
Sometimes I do as a release of stress. Once it is out, I move on. Since my wife isn't a teacher nor in my situation. When I need someone to discuss a situation that needs 1st hand knowledge, I will reach out to specific colleagues. I try to keep that to a minimum #bfc530
It is hard not to. The fact we’re chatting about Edu topics at 5:30am Eastern Time in the USA / 9:30pm Eastern Daylight Saving Time in Australia pretty much answers the question. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy our #bfc530 chats.

Teacher moments involve stories. Stories take some time. If it isn't 280 characters (even aloud), then there's not much interest. They don't mind seeing a pic...but, uh... don't include the story that goes with it. *sigh*
#bfc530
Shop talk happens ... many people talk about their job at home. It may not be the focus of conversation but it is always there. ... sometimes like a giant gorilla in the room #BFC530
I used to talk with my wife about my students a lot. Now that I'm not teaching, I talk about work less. For some reason, she doesn't find databases, student information systems, and staffing projections as entertaining as some of the stuff my students did and said. #bfc530
Talk shop? Rarely. Twitter saves me! Hubby is wonderful, but thinks my engagement activities and passion to shift grades are quite mad, so no talk about my ‘top of mind’, and really, how interesting is, “Jacob finally understood what a topic senentce is!” to a non-edu? #bfc530

In my opinion, in healthy, loving relationships, all kinds of sharing is important...”shop talk” is part of the mix, as long as it doesn’t become one-way ‘dumping’ of challenges/problems...joys, challenges, & two-way sharing are important. We need to celebrate each other! #bfc530
Hubs and I never stop...kind of an obsession, really. When we cotaught in a one roomed schoolhouse we used to joke that our daily after school walks were our T meetings because we talked about education and Ss the entire time 😂 #bfc530
Compartmentalization is a works-in-progress for me.
I try to bring home the good, yet oftentimes the complicated will haunt me at home.
Mindfulness helps but isn't perfect.
It is fantastic that I'm married to an HR executive. Her strategies have been invaluable.

I'm with @GruntledChalkie. I'm more inclined to bounce around to a couple of colleagues before or after school than discuss much at home. I also find #sunchat and #satchat and you all here at #bfc530 great brain downloading grounds.
For me, I suppose it goes back to that work/life balance thing. When you LOVE what you do, it becomes what you are and is simply living. I try to never complain (SAAB>BMW rule), but often chat with my wife, friends, etc. about the work I enjoy. #bfc530
When I moved from where I taught in CT, my wife asked how could I miss it b/c I complained about much more than my current school. I said I complain when I deeply care & want it at its best. A few yrs later I complained about my current school & she said "You're caring" #bfc530
seems like "shop talk" implies a negative or venting. i guess i did some of that, but most of my shop talk was the goofy stuff that happened in my classroom, personalities, interesting things students said, book discussions. all the stuff i got into teaching for. #bfc530
LOL I was using a eduTwitter thread to teach something to my students about social media use the other day & had to explain the eduTwitter shorthand to them #bfc530
At dinner we allgive the highlights of our days. Most Sunday’s we have shop talk with Sunday lunch. Of the 10 adults over half have worked or currently work in schools. PreK-16 #bfc530
I do share funny stories about what my kids said or did—I do not share gripes, unless I just need to vent for a second so I can move on. My family is pretty understanding about it all. #BFC530
Michelle in VA - my husband is a principal and since we've been married we've always worked in the same division or county. We have set clear boundaries about shop talk at home so we don't fall into the trap of discussing work all the time. #bfc530
When two teachers get home and talk inevitably the conversation is shop talk. We try to remind each other when it is too much. I’m usually the one who needs the most reminding. #BFC530
I actually didn’t think of it as venting. I thought shop talk was processing. How can i??? What do you think??? Does this make sense??? That is what we do. #bfc530
Very little these days. I used to and came to the realisation that it is important to switch off. I may talk about a funny thing that happened or a great achievement, but that’s about it. #bfc530
Some- ❤️ I am grateful to have educators in my personal social life that I'm able to 'relate' with, and a few of those are the nitty-gritty friends who you can vent the harder stuff more deeply with. Layers and levels. #bfc530 good question!! 🙏
Pretty much I just love being with people. As long as they’re comfortable talking about educational topics than it’s probably a good thing. They don’t necessarily have to have an education background to be connected and interested in what you have to share. #bfc530
A fair amount because we are both teachers but at different schools now. But we have very different views & teaching styles so sometimes better to cut heated Edu discussions short & move on.
#bfc530
My husband has a rule that we don’t talk about our work unless it is a “human interest” story. I think all of my stories are human interest but he disagrees (I’m not very good about following the rules!)😂 #bfc530

Agreed. I fell into a thread about that idea last week. Made me question, once again, those who’ve “moved on” from the classroom but feel they must share their wisdom in condescending ways from on high. I’m over it. #bfc530
There is quite an extensive Australian & New Zealand Twitter community. They generally are engaged in chats that are more localised. It’s possible to use Twitter chats as part of maintenance of teacher accreditation. Ping @EduSum@stringer_andrea@Lilylauren@markliddell#bfc530

Shop talk may be venting but it is so much more. When I get together with teacher mates we can spend ages arguing translations -e.g flamin galah, but rest of the world would find us very *insert head scratcher emoji* odd.
#bilingual 💆 🤔😲🙃
My wife is a teacher and I’m an assistant principal- we do talk shop- our two oldest are in elementary school. They like to hear things too- I only share appropriate tidbits with them. There has to be a separation- I won’t take the difficult stuff home with me.
I usually talk about the things that inspired or surprised me. I privately mull over the things that didn't go well and how they could be improved. #bfc530
This may interest the #bfc530. Community. The @aitsl site is very useful to Australian teachers and for people outside Australia not a bad place to get ideas from.

Talking about school at home. Yearly I coach my school's soccer team against my daughters' gym teacher & our town's team. He told them that their daddy's team won this yr. When they asked why I hadn't told them, I said "I like Mr R so I didnt want to rub it in" #bfc530

Me looking forward to weekends, holiday breaks, and Summer does not make me a bad teacher ... we just need to stop that rhetoric that tries paint looking forward to weekends as some sort of negative thing. #bfc530
I love creating little opportunities for creativity - providing the time and space for it. Sometimes, it's directed, but more often, I like to spark their curiosity and offer an option and see who bites! #participatementors
I guess not too much. I’m always so into what and how my husband and kids’ days went that I rarely share my day. We are in a stage of life where there’s still a lot of play time at home. #bfc530
Pick a card day for seating. Easy visibly random seating arrangement I got from @wheeler_laura. Posted to my kids on Snapchat already so that they know before arriving! #redbud132#bfc530
