#aussieED Archive
#aussieED was founded on the belief that all teachers, and students, should have unlimited access to Professional Development, on their own terms, to improve their teaching, their schools and change the lives of the students they encounter. Since then, we have embarked on a mission to reach educators, not only in Australia but, all around the globe. We want to smash the barriers that prevent teachers from easily connecting and learning with each other. To that end, we have developed a regular Ed-chat each Sunday on twitter at #aussieED. The chat allows all teachers, leaders, administrators and all those connected with education to meet on an unbiased platform and discuss the real issues that effect what happens in classrooms everywhere. Our chats are authentic because we are real teachers walking the same walk that so many do everyday.

Hi Ang from Manchester UK - best choice was moving into management - love being a Dep Head
A2 both. You want to be able to have them and make them but they also carry a responsibility and that can be a heavy load to carry
Agreed! https://t.co/S2xfW921Hs
A1 Sometimes I think choice is an illusion. The way you feel about things so often comes from your set of circumstances
Looks like we have quite an international blend on tonight... The right mix for a for pleasant chat https://t.co/Cq4JKFXc40
Definitely feel that we & our sts sometimes we live the paradoxical "tyranny of choice" - can be paralysing sometimes!
A2. Unintentionally pre-empted the question! Choice is freeing so long as we are willing to take risks. https://t.co/FEmnBuXnw9
Definitely feel that we & our sts sometimes we live the paradoxical "tyranny of choice" - can be paralysing sometimes!
A2 depends what the choices are and how you approach them
Said so much more eloquently than I could have https://t.co/Cq4JKFXc40
Definitely feel that we & our sts sometimes we live the paradoxical "tyranny of choice" - can be paralysing sometimes!
A1) Hi Good Morning friends, Spiri from the States jumping in, every decision & every choice shapes Ss future, choice empowers
Choices are interesting. For some they are empowering. For some i.e students with ASD they are debilitating
Don't sell yourself short sir ;-)
A2. Psychology Question! Answer 4 me is Mindset dependent!
Don't do it Leonie. That pouch is full of mucus
A1 applying for my first teaching job in 1994. Still at the same school
I find this almost always :S https://t.co/88OGwFGOqT
Stuck deliberating a few choices atm... hard to know what to do sometimes
Situational. Individuals respond differently to choices. For me? Empowering because it generates results https://t.co/vImMjFIXmD
A2: Both. Too many choices can debilitate as much as too few. Choice does empower, thoughโฆjust not too much!
A1. Rachel my most successful choices were to be a teacher, a mum and get married to my husband - possibly not in that order.
A2 - definitely both. Keeps me on my toes in how best to implement my pedagogy
A1: Mike from Illinois. Choosing my attitude is one of the most important choices I make daily https://t.co/VFwIRHOSRl
Empowering, allows for multiple solutions or outcomes, diverse thinking and an opportunity to see another's perspective.
A2: Definitely empowering - provides opportunities for individuality & creativity
A2. Depends on the situation. Sometimes choice is a great thing. Other times it can become restrictive. https://t.co/z4zApNEcmb
A2. Empowering when u feel they are right. Debilitating when forced into making them.
A1b) I like making choices. I tend to see closing doors and just bolt on in
A2 The big choices we make usually ain't that big, the choices we unwittingly make, they're usually the big ones that do damage.
A2: EMPOWERING! Can you imagine having no choices ever???
A2 Both - too much choice within organisation such as school can damage continuity, but need some individuality
.A2. Always empowering as they can and do change your life, your direction, your relationships, the way you tch & lrn etc
Can choice be bad when mistakes are there to be learnt from? (obviously excluding dangerous things here) https://t.co/pEmjRBo5xJ
Not doing anything is a choice .. often the default one. Is a bad choice better than nothing?
A2 Choice can lead to high levels of inequity for disadvantaged students.
Exactly my point tonight! :) https://t.co/NqVp83QcNo
A1b There's a limit to the amount of choices I can make in a day. I try to get other people to make them for me. Freaks them out!
A2 Bit of column a and bit of column b. Without strategies to understand consequences and priorities, choice can be terrifying
With choice comes responsibility & outcome or consequence challenge is being open to the possible flow on
A2: Choice is empowering. As long as it is genuine choice - not just a pre-determined outcome dressed up. https://t.co/iRs3t9ywpg
A2 choice is empowering as choice is often accompanied by change. Choosing 2 make change rather than being dragged along by change
A2 Choices can only be debilitating if one doesn't have the capacity or confidence to choose.
A2: both, depending on the situation. I feel our Ss and Ts see things the same way. Depends on their experiences I think.
A1: Best Choice - applying for Sabbatical Leave in 2013. 1 year later = 18 weeks paid holiday. Travel reinforced love of Teaching.
A2 Depends on the circumstances..Choice is empowering, tricky when it becomes entitlement based
A2 interesting to note that response to choices can be impacted by time of day/glucose levels known as egodepletion
A4: Some Ss love choice. Others it freak. I think it depends if they have been empowered to make choices in their lives!
A2 I think choice is great as students grow in mastery of a subject. Early on, it can be confusing and debilitating
A2 Choices are so very individual & dependent on context. Important to decide beforehand: Will choice be given? How many options?
A2. Choice empowers decision making but too many options are debilitating - ooohhh I can't choose.
I feel this too about us (adults) https://t.co/JnyG2MIlez
Said so much more eloquently than I could have https://t.co/Cq4JKFXc40
Definitely feel that we & our sts sometimes we live the paradoxical "tyranny of choice" - can be paralysing sometimes!
Nice work and no doubt well-deserved! A1
A2 For example, schools sweat over Google v Microsoft, yet float through the instruction v inquiry decision.
A2: Some Ss โค๏ธ choice. Others it freak. I think it depends if they have been empowered to make choices in their lives!
Hi! Sorry I'm late. A1: I like choice. Best choice so far was leaving the classroom to focus on improving teaching in sector.
Nice Richard, they're just tools.
you don't need it to grow. Although growth skyrockets when there is a positive mindset
A2 when they are meaningful, choice empowers, when choice is forced, there is no win win situation.
Lucky you! At my 5th school already
A2: This book discusses how we have too many choices facing us on a daily basis. Think the supermarket! https://t.co/naccW9GR2t
A2 - contemplation time is often required to make the right choice
A2 I think it's situational as to whether the choices are empowering or not.
Choice and mindset are interwoven - when we complain about having choice - try to imagine the opposite situation
This. We should present choices when sts are equipped 2 critically discern between them, not pick randomly https://t.co/6OsUhQC2As
A2 I think choice is great as students grow in mastery of a subject. Early on, it can be confusing and debilitating
yeah. Always felt uncomfortable with giving Ss "choices" that barely got the bill
A2: choices come with accountability - we come to realise the implications of our decisions. But please - let me choose!
Hi Carl Good Morning (evening) ๐ no artificial stuff, important to keep it real
Preparing prizes for Friday night! So excited for the big event! If you can't make it join us online https://t.co/9vQwdaRKIV
A2) Empowering - love the idea of new opportunities and adventures
A2: Depends on circumstances. Choices are not always win/lose. The lesser of two evils is not a win.
How much is too much though? https://t.co/nbAaq0YDQX
A2: Both. Too many choices can debilitate as much as too few. Choice does empower, thoughโฆjust not too much!
I know that feeling all too personally. Fear of the unknown is the real paralysing factor, not choice itself
so would you say you're feeling debilitated by this??
Hi Fiona here travelling the UK and meeting lots of wonderful teachers
A2: we should foster informed choices to avoid the debilitating feeling.
A2 The only way people learn is by choice. Students need to make the right choice every day. It's up to us to make the choice easy
Hi Spiri. Missed you lately. Beautiful day here today... mild winters day. Cold evening though. Keeping it real
looks like a fun time ahead
Ss choice can always be steered to assist them and overcome debilitation
that's only half the prizes - over $3500 worth of donated prizes to give away - it's amazing!!!
Q3 Choice can be overwhelming rather than exciting. Do you think students experience choices as burdens? https://t.co/8551pU87z7
Yes! (As a general rule). But the latest Ep 'medium white tshirt ' is Especially relevant here
A2: empowering because they challenge us to think creatively and critically
Not sure I entirely agree. I have learned many valuable lessons from situations that I had zero choice about!
Totally agree! A2 https://t.co/NMyiuvOgBx
A2 I think choice is great as students grow in mastery of a subject. Early on, it can be confusing and debilitating
So true. We need to realise this when giving Ss choice. Need to take little steps for some https://t.co/w55Dusww7w
A2: Some Ss โค๏ธ choice. Others it freak. I think it depends if they have been empowered to make choices in their lives!
A2: Depends on the context, feasibility of process and expectations of outcomes.
You had to choose to learn from them though. You could have chosen to ignore the lesson.
A2: Choice in the classroom is empowering but we can't allow apathy to be a possible choice. That's when we slip into debilitation
Excellent point! https://t.co/ZF8ZqdEkY2
A2 Choices can only be debilitating if one doesn't have the capacity or confidence to choose.
A3 Sometimes they do. I reckon they also want to have the choice not to make choices and trust we make the right ones for them
Great Q. When too many choices leads to inability to choose. Depends very much on the S or T. We are all different.
A2 Choices might also cause both debilitating & empowering feels at the same time
A2)Empowering, even if you donโt want to act on them Having choice much better than having feeling I'm trapped
A3. Yes, but sts can be freed to take risks if they feel the psychological safety to mess up and try again
A3 Choice for Ss is only a burden if the purpose of the choice is unclear still need to give some guidance & provide structure
A3 I'd put Ss choice in the forced category. How much choice do they really have at school. they get told when what & where.
A2 lots of choice allow them not to think outside the box BUT think that there is no box
A3. Definitely if students haven't got the skills to think about and follow through on their choices. https://t.co/Vr1LFsMYf3
Q3 Choice can be overwhelming rather than exciting. Do you think students experience choices as burdens? https://t.co/8551pU87z7
My supermarket is working hard to fix this for me ๐
Awesome man!! Will try to make it
Yes if not sufficiently scaffolded and aware in advance. A3
A3 Might I suggest that if students are overwhelmed by the choices they need to make, then the learning design is wrong.
A3 shouldn't be burdens if we support S's to make and enact good choices - our role as teachers
A3 If there are too many choices and/or too many options, yes. And if the stakes are too high, yes. https://t.co/yOtBIrydQ3
Q3 Choice can be overwhelming rather than exciting. Do you think students experience choices as burdens? https://t.co/8551pU87z7
It's important to know your students, choice can be used to stretch high ability but may hinder low ability
A3: not all but for some, yes. If criteria is clear it helps choice within the boundaries become more viable
Just adding to my listening list... =) Thanks!
A3. I think students need to be taught specific skills to deal with choices. They also need to face the realities of their choices
Agree opting out should not be an option
that would be cool! Will through a few videos up on too I hope
A3) As a parent of 2 Year 12 girls I can tell you they are feeling very overwhelmed at what choice sthey have next
interesting thought. How do you make choice easy? https://t.co/W4Wr1AVEAG
A2 The only way people learn is by choice. Students need to make the right choice every day. It's up to us to make the choice easy
A3 Oh yes, I even heard Ss say, "oh pls, can you just tell me what to do?" They need to learn how to deal with having choices!
A3: Students and Teachers. I know some teachers who want no choice. โJust tell me what to do/how to do itโ Fear the โwrongโ choice
A3 Some Ss thrive with option of making choices - others need boundaries to feel safe and supported
A3. My Ss definitely find making choices exciting. Their behaviour, questioning, engagement and quality of work supports this.
Subject selection, how many chose based on ease or fun rather than mid or long term goals.
A3: I think age, ability and aptitude have to be key factors, esp Ss struggle with uncertainty of experience. Can be tricky.
.A3 I tch Jnrs & they generally find choices exciting. No fear at that age. Want to get stuck in and try new things
A3 It's important to remember that real choice is only possible if not everybody has a choice.
A3. For some Ss choice is a convenient excuse to not choose anything!
No thy students! https://t.co/4kK8ZfaDnG
A3 Some Ss thrive with option of making choices - others need boundaries to feel safe and supported
A3:some do,if their experience with choice have been negative. Many would rather just be told what to do-which is a bigger problem!
A3 Give the correct amount of choice to students. Young students given low stakes choices, older students given tougher choices.
exactly, there needs to be trust and a safe environment; even better if choices and risks are modeled by Ts
A3: Like anything, there needs to be the right balance with choices, particularly with children
A2 classes are all about inquiry and choice {or at least should be.......}
A3 it is how the choices are structured and the authenticity of those choices that make them powerful
A3: Choice needs to be there with support. The level of support depends on each student
Q3 I think much is in the design of the option. Are the options varied enough to encompass different thoughts and varied outcomes?
That looks so inviting. Wherew as the beach. BTW I love piers and that one looks great
A3: Often we limit choice to what is manageable for schools. What works for timetables/staffing or reporting. Forget the students!
Students will have to make choices in a life outside of school, so need to learn in a safe environment. A3
Students will choose to learn if they feel they've got control, a chance to succeed and there's a purpose to it.
Shame. I find that too sometimes. how could we help them develop this important skills?
A3 also relevant - way is the choice? Choice of topic, access method, presentation style, equipment,model... https://t.co/9Vkv7jQLfj
A2 many stages of choice - from the conscience based to the spiritual to the hierarchical. Some choices are out of our control...
True. Part of teaching resilience is training sts to "do hard things" - because they're worth it
Totally agree a3 https://t.co/w3Ap9QeHhN
A3 Choice for Ss is only a burden if the purpose of the choice is unclear still need to give some guidance & provide structure
So we need to also help our students learn to make choices! https://t.co/s4xo8x1hRh
Yes if not sufficiently scaffolded and aware in advance. A3
Is that fear of making the wrong choice? Of taking responsibility perhaps?
A3: Choices are learning opportunities. Sometimes tricky, yes, but what would they learn if we made all the decisions for them?
A3 Is the idea of students needing to "make good choices" highly problematic? Should student choice be good v bad?
A3: Ss who are afraid of choice possibly have a preconceived idea that there is a right or wrong choice
A3. When they know they're not being given a 'real' choice the excitement is lost. When you give them a choice 2 early, yes.
Controlled choice vs Free Choice https://t.co/DuWZOQBpVp
A3 Some Ss thrive with option of making choices - others need boundaries to feel safe and supported
I'd like a muffin please. | Which muffin would you like? | Surprise me! | ใ(>_<ใ)
true. We even decide when they can choose
Well said! https://t.co/5Sz0D7iyn9
A3. I think students need to be taught specific skills to deal with choices. They also need to face the realities of their choices
Absolutely, if stand back to some extent and let them learn from their bad choices.
We vacationed in Sunset Beach, North Carolina, taken as a storm was rolling in, my daughter has
Q3 Choice is a burden if the options require only a single outcome or response. Then there is a "what's the point" factor.
A3 Letting Ss choose their learning path should always lead to greater learning. Fail isn't an option. First Attempt In Learning.
Currently accepting applications for Assistant Head of Junior School. See 'Employment' at https://t.co/knhE3pjm9p Closing 22 July
Currently accepting applications for Assistant Head of Junior School. See 'Employment' at https://t.co/L3QRijOhS6 Closing 22 July
Do use the good / bad when we want them to make our choice, not theirs?
Indeed, choosing is a great responsibility! https://t.co/Br8mRow5oN
A3: Students and Teachers. I know some teachers who want no choice. โJust tell me what to do/how to do itโ Fear the โwrongโ choice
is officially sold out for Friday night in Sydney - 120 educators will come together for an epic night of fun learning
A3 - IMO some Ss thrive when challenged with choices others dislike challenges. Understanding these Ss helps the classroom
Yes, once sts are "old enough to make their own mistakes" - we should let them! Ownership -> learning
Hello sweet friend ๐ How are you Rizza?
Isn't all choice forced choice? Too philosophical?
Q3 Choices are vital to learning. Every child thinks & are interested in diff things. Writers Notebook, Inquiry models give Choice
hello I'm languages teacher from Spain
A3 While recognising the importance of teaching informed choice-making, it's also vital to allow kids to enjoy carefree time
A3 in a safe & trusting environment where Ss feel encouraged to take risks
Students r no different to us!We need to make choices,we need to model bad/good behaviors when good/bad https://t.co/D3jBZmcyVv
what to do after Year 12... one is thinking about work. the other want to play soccer overseas
I've known some Ts like that too
And we need to hold students to their choices. Help them negotiate the world of choices, right and wrong!
For ASD and Anxious Ss choice can be absolutely horrific. They are so scared to "get it wrong" even if there is no "wrong"
Hi Stuart Good Morning/Evening ๐
A3; When we design learning with choice - Ss need to know there is no โ
or โ path. Put value on growth mindset & risk taking
A3:Depends on student & context. Learning how to deal with choice & consequences that follow important too https://t.co/3eCWyWcyPk
Q3 Choice can be overwhelming rather than exciting. Do you think students experience choices as burdens? https://t.co/8551pU87z7
Concur with Joel here, constraints don't eliminate choice. There are always boundaries.
Q3 Who is doing the talking? teacher or child, Choices give Ss a voice & and forum to be experts in their own learning interests
A4 Sometimes not. If not done thoughtfully they are just a case of useless freedom. Some choices r not needed or useful at school
I agree - there shouldn't be a wrong path (choice). Put value on the learning along the way
A4 There's a lot to be said for sometimes allowing students to answer Qs or solve problems in the way that they choose
A3 Student agency is a challenge to foster&sometimes SS just want to be absolved of choice Doesn't mean we allow that, though
Q1: Scott from Melbourne. I like choice personally
need to leave early for some extra sleep after weekend school camp great discussion questions - sorry to miss rest
yeah. Always good to get 1st hand accounts
I choose not to dig any deeper into that question for fear of what I might find ๐
A3. Choice can be overwhelming when we don't provide our Ss with the tools and strategies to make informed decisions
Sometimes. Many Ss aren't used to making choices in school/life; they need a "safe environment" to try and learn A3
Thanks Eddie. I'm glad you articulated what I could not.
A4 - Definitely "worthy", Learning how to make the correct choices helps develop engagement for Ss in the classroom
Yes they are! I understand her well ๐
A4. Absolutely because choice can take students on learning journeys they never even would think about. https://t.co/hJhiXyZtla
Absolutely. Sometimes Ts are the first people to give them the option of choice. They donโt know what to do with it!
A4. In mathematics, choice of how to approach a problem is everything. Doing it well requires creativity, insight & ingenuity!
A4) I think all choices are a step in personal maturity and progress so yes they are "worthy"
A4 choice = agency = engagement = learning :)
A1 Loretta-best choice applying & accepting principals job in Canberra and moving from Perth. https://t.co/xvO3Q9pO6C
Q1 Introduce yourself and tell us what you most successful choice has been so far OR how does the idea... https://t.co/5Nwz8jIhEn
I talk to Ss in UK and they say yes my Ss in Aus say bring it on. Maybe its how you present and support https://t.co/JJIdzzO2Jw
Q3 Choice can be overwhelming rather than exciting. Do you think students experience choices as burdens? https://t.co/8551pU87z7
Exactly! Ss don't need to be doing work just to have work to do.
A4 Homework choices should only be reflection or reading of family time.
A4. Oooh... Depends what they are. Can lean toward enquiry learning = ๐ Needs good accountability. https://t.co/ik4MCFcA1I
A4: if the task is purposeful/relatable/formative, then yes. Busy work, HMWK for the sake of it, and tasks to fill gradebook...no.
Ss always make choices, even when we don't offer them
A4 Absolutely! Student choice in learning = ownership, pride, meaningful and authentic learning experiences
Can be "unworthy" if the understanding is lacking. Many parents see choice as "optional" in homework rather than necessity.
A2: Both. For Ss and Ts. I think it is situation and context dependent.
A3 it may be a burden when Ss were not fully prepared to make choices or were not given opportunities to practice making choices
A4: Yes! Allowing choice can make learning more personalised and interesting
taking that a step further providing opportunities 4 S 2find answers 2questions that interest them
Thank you Rizza, love the beach, off to Denver & mountains on Tuesday for conference
Got lost looking at Alfina Jackson's video. Thanks Alfine!
So true!I was thinking more about grids of choices on homework. SOme of them look like false choices to me https://t.co/IMESWYWP0L
A4 There's a lot to be said for sometimes allowing students to answer Qs or solve problems in the way that they choose
Great point Ben, in class, student engagement is always a choice!
A4 I think the choice to complete a task at home can give you a fresh perspective on things & may make it easier to concentrate
Yes! The Tour de France is on!
There not only worthy but vital. Student voice should be at the heart of education
A4.Homework should be brief but meaningful and related to the days learning
I give my Ss homework choice - do it at home or do it at lunch time - not do it is not an option : )
Eg Twitter or Family time? https://t.co/OoRMMCa1ky
A4 Homework choices should only be reflection or reading of family time.
Thanks Stuart. That reading opened my eyes
You are really getting the miles done Spiri
A4: Yes because it gives children opportunities to attempt more challenging tasks that they might not have if given a task by T
A4 I think choices are "worthy" bc Ss are engaged when they are choosing the way they enjoy learning.
A4 Ss make a choice to do Hwork. motivation matters to the quality - I want to do it vs I have to do it - is that a worthy choice
A4 Think a well facilitated Inquiry process, where choice is central to learning will always be extremely effective.
A4: any & all of our decisions have outcomes - even if we made the same choice the outcome could be different. Worth is the value
Great point Kevin. Should be deeper not just more!
Q4 Parents and educators see it as unworthy because we sometimes forget our Ss are being bought up to think, and participate
A4 None of my students do the same homework or classwork on any given day. It's really about differentiation.
purposeful design takes time and scaffolding, supports broader skills but not always recognised as curriculum
A4. Ss and teacher choise everytime when they are doing or not.
A3: I think they can. Can be minimised if tasks are structured correctly and that choices they allowed to make are genuine.
A4: worthy, because if not, they'll "choose" not to do it.
Yes as long as they are underpinned with quality pedagogy and clear LI and SC
By the way Hi Kati,
Great to see your questions... finally caught up
A4 Student choice in learning can be debilitating for disadvantaged students. Those with cultural capital are the most empowered.
A4 YES! Thatโs the "safe environment" I was talking about . Plus, they are more motivated to work on tasks they like!
A4: Iโd like to think that my Ss always have a choice in my class. Choose your effort and you choose your end point. Worth it? TBD
A4b You could consider differentiation here with Kaplan model: choice, process, product, learning env't. (for Gifted & Talented)
A4: As long as it's still guided and supported by teachers, students having choice in how they learn is incredibly worthy
Is there a valid reason for any compulsory h/work? I'm not convinced. A4
A4) Choice is meaningful, purposeful, personal to each individual, learning is too, Ss should take ownership of their learning
To continue with the status quo is also a choice
So true. Be visual and give short and sharp directions as well as simple choice that removes anxiety
Agreed - especially when it is an established practice and Ss and Ts are comfortable.
A4. Choice in homework/school work is worthy when it is authentic and responds to Ss learning styles/interests etc
I agree, yet I strongly believe many students are not ready to make choices when we given them the chance https://t.co/0NmB1qZ6R7
There not only worthy but vital. Student voice should be at the heart of education
What if a good student doesn't want to do homework? A4
A4.For homework less is more.Quality not quantity
A3. Whomever chooses "owns" the results of the decision. https://t.co/YJFwSwQBoP
A3 Oh yes, I even heard Ss say, "oh pls, can you just tell me what to do?" They need to learn how to deal with having choices!
A4 HWK with my seniors is always negotiated 1 to 1. I ask "Do u think u need to do some HWK?" Sometimes they say yes, sometimes no
.A4.Sch wk choices should be related to indiv Ss needs goals, learning journey helping thm be motivated, engaged indep & confident
I argue we need to help them prepare for it, through providing them with choices and ways to choose wisely https://t.co/0NmB1qZ6R7
There not only worthy but vital. Student voice should be at the heart of education
not everything has to have choice. But like all skills for future work & life we need give opportunities to learn them
was late tonight are you moderating? _ Whoo Hoo!!!! Trying to catchup quickly :)
A5 on our own individual needs and disregard others' opinions and wisdom. Choices can also be about community needs as a whole 2/2
A5 I reckon choices need to b made for the common good whenever possible. I fear we are more and more focused on (exclusively) 1/2
Classwork too. Want to v Have to is a strong (un)motivator
Unless the reason & expected outcome is clear there is no valid reason, in my opinion.
Lets not go down the homework arguments path!
Wow, respect! Can you really offer different tasks for every student EVERY DAY?๐ค
"Just tell me the answer!"
Got my vote, let the students play IMO.
A4 I don't like homework if it's repetitive work.I prefer creativityhomework Ss need emotional experience https://t.co/3d3XSCbTc3
A5. No way! We need to encourage students to make choices that are beneficial for others in the school, local and global community
A3 Yes, I think we all can feel overwhelmed sometimes. confidence is key. Not sure it's a burden though. https://t.co/utIYib0OEE
Q3 Choice can be overwhelming rather than exciting. Do you think students experience choices as burdens? https://t.co/8551pU87z7
A5 - Yes. Being able to satisfy one's curiosity will help work towards a Ss or Ts want to become better
Do they though? I find many choose the easy path and in that sense giving them choice not the best option https://t.co/ce6rU86QpY
A4: Yes because it gives children opportunities to attempt more challenging tasks that they might not have if given a task by T
A5. Choices should always be based on a empathetic understanding of the big picture reality!
If students aren't used to doing any work outside of school they find revising before exams difficult
Give the opportunity anyway better for them to be anxious then supported and feel success in a supportive environment then fail
A5. No because choices need to be sometimes considered in a wider context beyond our own self. https://t.co/HGLVtRDFyl
I agree. Let's not exhaust the students before the next day of school!
A5: If we want our world to be a self-absorbed egotistical non-event. Go for it! Iโd like to think we want Ss thinking of others.
A5 Of course not - many choices are forced upon us. Ind choices may conflict too; strive for resolution https://t.co/ZQ5du2LchP
I'm cool with this, but not with just more.
A4 I like using thinkers keys for h/w I spend alot of time making h/w relevant and fun
For me, choice is about getting the best result. Who is the result for? What steps am I taking? https://t.co/GPwhZ0LirW
I don't believe in homework, I don't give it, if T teaches well, Ts&Ss makes use of time, homework is not needed
There was a sig milestone in my life once where I realised that every choice I made from then on made me a diff person since then
I still haven't!!! a few minutes behind. This is so hard!! Great to see your answers always ;)
.A5. Sometimes choices should be made that are not indiv but for others too. Relationshps are impt in life
A necessity for some to have another go at a concept in their own time. For some Parents, homework is the "in" to help
A4 For my last lit. project I prepared a "pool" of different creative tasks for students to choose from https://t.co/M047n9FMcX
A4. Great tasks allow sts to self-differentiate by giving them choice, like Which One Doesn't Belong https://t.co/S2Sl0FY2Ae
A5 not always. We need to teach sts that at times they need to make choices that benefit more than just themselves
A4. Agree. Allows them the freedom to chose their learning style. https://t.co/6O6KqzhZtQ
A4 There's a lot to be said for sometimes allowing students to answer Qs or solve problems in the way that they choose
A5: Choice should sometimes take Ss (and us ) out of our comfort zone for greater growth
Tweet of the night! ๐
Tailoring choice options to ind's IS an option. Doesn't have to be all or nothing. https://t.co/ANOgTXC0nK
A4 None of my students do the same homework or classwork on any given day. It's really about differentiation.
A5b: We โtrainโ our Ss to think of others. Work with clients. Create for them. What you think matters less than your client needs.
could this be a debilitating statement and in fact work in reverse when supporting Ss who fear choice?
For example. Grade 9s are coding this term. Everyone will code something completely different using diff techniques.
A5. Some people have the preference/need to help others. So what does that mean? This question has imploded on me.
A5 No - safe choices will not help long term growth need to take risks and make mistakes to win big
One of the hardest things can be making a choice when you know/can guess the reactions of others https://t.co/FtJToyXPKw
A5 Of course not - many choices are forced upon us. Ind choices may conflict too; strive for resolution https://t.co/ZQ5du2LchP
Interesting, one of my tchg mentors used to argue...revision could take place in school and there only.
I like this! https://t.co/jcliPlm0f2
A4: Iโd like to think that my Ss always have a choice in my class. Choose your effort and you choose your end point. Worth it? TBD
Hi, A bit late tonight. A1. I like the thought of choice but can become overwhelmed with too many options.
Thanks Kati.
I read fast... that's my superpower.
It could have been flying but no, I got read fast
What impact did this have on their revision before exams?
A4: Choice in class. Work then, minimal chance of homework. Choice in how they approach their learning is what is important.
we make choices every time we walk in to door too, just like the students about attitude etc.
A5: it depends on the situation. If S are working collaboratively, then their choices should be based one what's best for all.
I tell my students to read and be nice to their parents, that's quality h/work!
Choice will not always be cut and dry. Choices can be for a variety of reasons some self centred and some not so
A5 Choice should be about improving things. Make the best choice? Sometimes that is not in your own interests. Helping others!
A5 big difficult philosophical question my answer the the ego and the id
My kids have chosen that I must leave now - I want to stay but I will do what is right for them so no - not always personal gain
choice can occur within learning outcome frameworks through to free choice like genius hour concepts
A5: I think choice in learning is about exploring options & decision making. Being able to justify choice not just preference
Q5 If it is make learners successful and help them access the classroom learning most definitely. Choice teach independence
I find that with my own children. They are not very good at making choices with homework... https://t.co/zZEutH5Mia
A4.For homework less is more.Quality not quantity
A5. Not at all; it's vital for sts to make choices keeping social justice priorities in mind https://t.co/HXimslm1gy
Choices that S T R E T C H https://t.co/9EQltPs5uo
A5 No - safe choices will not help long term growth need to take risks and make mistakes to win big
A5 I think that when you are perfect in harmony your actions are the vest in each situations.I think yes. https://t.co/DwCSdDuxdA
Not be even more fearful of the next class and learning.
Not be even more fearful of the next class and learning.
Sorry I'm not sure I understand the question.
There only is 1 one. It's part of teh number 16
I do this too, but many are choosing the I won't do it option and it has not been good for them :( https://t.co/hcL4MAFP62
A4 HWK with my seniors is always negotiated 1 to 1. I ask "Do u think u need to do some HWK?" Sometimes they say yes, sometimes no
Q5. No way. Choices should impact local, and global issues. The deeper the choice the more skills we learn.
A5: Is choice sometimes a list of options? Maybe some Ss take the easy choice, stay in comfort zone and don't learn anything new!?
As Ts isn't it our role to help Ss work towards embracing choice
For all work! We often think more=better. Why not just less, but better quality. Like good food! Rich, but not too much!
completely agree https://t.co/fiZY6ZEoh1
A4. Agree. Allows them the freedom to chose their learning style. https://t.co/6O6KqzhZtQ
A4 There's a lot to be said for sometimes allowing students to answer Qs or solve problems in the way that they choose
Thinking outside the box like this is most definitely welcome ;-)
Q5 Choices promote Ss curiosity, innovation, questioning, problem solving and reflection in the classroom aka Independent learner
I definitely want this! https://t.co/xcco60Dm9r
A5: If we want our world to be a self-absorbed egotistical non-event. Go for it! Iโd like to think we want Ss thinking of others.
Q6 What choice have you (or we as an industry/nation) recently made that we need to discuss? https://t.co/eqA8QZBhcR
but what happens to subjects with only limited curriculum time?
We also need to let students cultivate a growth mindset and build there ability to bounce back when things don't go their way
a5: No. You cannot have rights without responsibilities.
yep isn't it amazing what stands out from our school years
A5 Have not thought about it like that but it does when it pushes you out of your comfort zone between 2 https://t.co/UTuctR6AmC
A2. For me - keeping the amount of choices to only a few can be very empowering. Others may love many options. Knowing students
https://t.co/hDcvQXzHYl Self Organized Learning Environments... I'm helping to facilitate a summer program inspired by them.
If we argue that Ts need more space outside of school, students need likewise.
A4.Homework can cause great stress at home.It must be meaningful and not involve written work
A5 Not always. Informed choices will be based on available time, resources, desired outcomes & balanced w/ impact on self & others
A6 It takes effort and energy and we need to be willing to put those on to benefit from the privilege of choice 2/2
A5) Not always, choice could be for the betterment of many
A6 The choice of giving up choice because of apathy or inaction is always one for discussion! Choice is also a responsibility 1/2
Yes Yes so very true, they teach Ss to take action and learn at that deeper level.
A5. No we are preparing our Ss for life beyond school and think and make choices that will have an affect on others.
The students shouldn't be penalised due to a structural impediment IMO.
A5: When we give freedom to make choices, we give freedom to learn from mistakes - Ts and Ss https://t.co/StWQGtJfhp
If I give them info, evidence & they need it, they see sense. Sometimes they don't do HWK as have other commitments
Some students need extra time 2 grasp concepts/practise. HW can provide with guidance 2 use that time https://t.co/oixxJ2lk0F
I don't believe in homework, I don't give it, if T teaches well, Ts&Ss makes use of time, homework is not needed
A5 Choices I make in the classroom are always for the good of my Ss. If I can give them the choice, the ball is always in their ๐๐ป
I must be doing something wrong :(
I think we all need more space & less busyness (she types during on a Sunday night).
I agree, ed's about quality not quantity. Let them live!
Spending time w/family is their homework in my classroom, build relationships w/family, socialize, make memories
Q5. Choices made for "greater good" may not satisfy individual preference in the short term... https://t.co/YfOkZtNxG3
Love the honesty and the irony!
Relationships is THE most important thing in life in my opinion! https://t.co/Of0ok4CCs1
.A5. Sometimes choices should be made that are not indiv but for others too. Relationshps are impt in life
I do flipped mastery. They know where they are in the course, what the endpoints are & how much time they have to do it
A6: Ah I said it before but... TIMETABLING in secondary.
A5: Choice is about making the best decisions for oneself. That is not always about satisfying ones own preferences.
A5: in education there are always too many others you are working for that allows this to be the case
A6 We need to make some choices on how we fund initiatives for adolescents with mental health issues https://t.co/rVmrdVp8fY
Q6 What choice have you (or we as an industry/nation) recently made that we need to discuss? https://t.co/eqA8QZBhcR
I agree. Often people must weigh self-interest with the greater good. Choices have ethical & moral dimensions.
I agree that practice can be useful but often the guidance part is missing
Good point, in many low-income homes, h/work can only be done at school.
A3. Too many dresses in a dress shop.... this can be very overpowering & it becomes less about a choice & more about anxiety.
Education is life itself. Find what each and every s loves and watch magic happen.
hi Bernadette. How goes the highly individualised PhD?
The choices aren't blanket ones. Some nights they decide they need hwk, other nights they have other priorities.
A6. I think we need to discuss what our real aims of school are. What is our vision for our students?
A6) I chose that whatever administrative role I may have, being a teacher comes first
It doesn't always work out obviously!
Big Choice by Face To Face This chat topic reminded me of a favorite song from years ago. โซ https://t.co/rEDFUZpd33
Choices can be absent due to sticking to the curriculum. My classroom I use resources, global/local, create choice build curiosity
I have this poster up in my classroom
profound! not sure but would love to find out! https://t.co/F2pGORiznU
A5. Some people have the preference/need to help others. So what does that mean? This question has imploded on me.
I'm also on holidays so my inability to switch off professionally is doubly ironic.
A6 In Germany, the plan is to equip every school with internet/wifi. "The Great Digitization" or "Education 4.0", they call it
Valid points ladies. Often the work needs the teacher present, less so the parents.
A6.I have rid my school of all workbooks. They stem creative thinking
Yep. Clare finally slept a good nights sleep last night for teh first time all year
A6. My choice to take a step back and try to find a better work/life balance and it's been very positive. https://t.co/d5aIA8qN6u
Q6 What choice have you (or we as an industry/nation) recently made that we need to discuss? https://t.co/eqA8QZBhcR
Q5 Choice. Here in Delaware we have choice for schools to attend (do you have that in other places?)
What a chat ! Thank you so much for all the ideas! 'Til next my friend ๐
Had lovely time collecting data in Wangaratta recently and 91 surveys now in! https://t.co/RL2CBokOCH
hi Bernadette. How goes the highly individualised PhD?
A6. Do we keep pushing ahead with Edcamps & Teachmeets? Massively time intensive?
So the school needs to try an ensure that there is provision to give extra help in school
Likewise, this for me is R n R as much as work!
Thanks for another great chat, look forward to next week
Funding, how we deal with students who are falling behind, working as a team to improve education
great! With data it becomes real & rewarding. Enjoy!
Was aware of this. But can destroy/confuse students' want and engagement for learning.
A6: probably not too recent but 5 pts scale reporting for Prep to 3
A6: As a nation (or state) we need to talk about Gonski and the funding of public and private education. https://t.co/zdYvn1j2bE
Q6 What choice have you (or we as an industry/nation) recently made that we need to discuss? https://t.co/eqA8QZBhcR
A6: Not necessarily recent but the need for teaching of British values, made more significant by recent events in Nice
A6 The choice to educate students as we do. There are many alternatives that we ignore because it's how we've always don it
Thanks- on a great learning journey and fully immersed in my data! https://t.co/Wi1OluJeRo
great! With data it becomes real & rewarding. Enjoy!
she may polarise but at least she has the confidence to say what she thinks. That is not saying I agree with her!!!!
.A6Why govt thinks it knows more thn comm/ Schs -crowded Schs get more c/rms to fill up playgrds& neighbours fields. Not new sch
Yes! That's why many schools run homework sessions/catch-ups at school. Home time is free time.
Xtra prac time is in classroom, Ss need time to think/dissect/absorb info given (continued)
A6. The elephant in the room! 1/3 of Australians don't finish high school? WHAT THE? This is not Ok!
A6 We are making choices for students who live in a world that we may never understand. Is our current ed system the best choice?
Q7 Bonus question: tell us about the next choice you need to make. (Could we help you with the decision?) https://t.co/DHL9jO17Ce
I agree. This is a tough one for me in a low SES school it helps with students taking ownership of something in their life
a6b For instance, I feel that students are capable of contributing to society before yr10/12/uni/etc. It would benefit them & all
me, too. & blogging feels like downtime.
Definitely. You lose touch very quickly - even if its just basic things like air con, or wireless access
Helps to show them visually how much time is left vs how much "stuff". They can also see where the rest of class is.
A7 The choice 2 make a FUN assessment w the risk of not following guidelines or coming up w messy results and complicate marking
A4. I like to have a balance of both. Set items that need to be completed & others that students can have more power over.
A5: Choices are made for many reasons - some personal preferences and some with sacrifice in mind. Think: Family, life, work...
yes but only if you pay. not in public schools
4.0?! Did I miss 3.0 somewhere along the line?
The hidden curriculum is a vital part of education. Schools are direct reflections of society
A7. Every week you already do! Do I drive 2016 Qld Edcamp?
Why do new concept & practice all in 1 day? Mile wide/inch deep curric doesn't work, not meaningful
A6: content over love of learning in the Junior School
I know, so many interesting things going on, it is hard to choose!! https://t.co/3fXR0CfymW
A6. Do we keep pushing ahead with Edcamps & Teachmeets? Massively time intensive?
A7 My next choice is if I, as a teacher, should go completely paperless in the classroom next school year ๐
A6 The end of year testing debacle is always a discussion point in TN.
awesome! I look forward to following how it develops.
A7 Who will I recruit? ๐
BQ) Where do I want to teach? Tough choice but I need to find a place I belong
Q7 I choose to continue to be a student so that my students know what to do.
A6.Programming robotic Lego and drones beats any mathsbook.Simple choice
Do I eat the home made vanilla slice or the Ice cream
A6: how to effectively fund schools? how do we change the perception of teachers?
A7 my next step in edu journey from primary maths leader to???
It's my thinking and reflection time...same with twitter.
A6: encouraging risk taking on the part of Ss and Ts. How do we encourage and promote moving out of one's comfort zone?
Q7 Should I stay up and watch and be bleary eyed tomorrow at school or go to bed?
A7 What should I do and where should I go for my Principals study break/time next year? https://t.co/dC7OzqmygK
Q7 Bonus question: tell us about the next choice you need to make. (Could we help you with the decision?) https://t.co/DHL9jO17Ce
love of learning... content will follow
that's so important: personal alignment with organisational context, vision & values. Good luck!
How do we prepare our Ss for an unknown tomorrow if we don't give them the opportunity to choose a path https://t.co/4fEU9ObyJv
Q7: go to bed or do uni work?
I also choose to design a mobile school. One that perpetually traverses the globe
Thank you very much. I got overwhelmed about 15 minutes ago though. Not keeping up! :( https://t.co/XNuhX4H7na
Awesome questions! Really does help having peeps like you in to reach the back boxes of the brain! Thanks!
A7.My next big choice is to lessen dependence on texts that teach nothing
coconut. Blueberry is everywhere, coconut is rarer.
From a teaching standpoint - Seating plans and if to change a few students or whole class (year 1/2s)? https://t.co/2T9C53BV4N
Q7 Bonus question: tell us about the next choice you need to make. (Could we help you with the decision?) https://t.co/DHL9jO17Ce
And that is why our job is SO important. What we do influences how our society is and will become https://t.co/BzNblFu66v
The hidden curriculum is a vital part of education. Schools are direct reflections of society
vanilla slice is my choice
Chromebooks for all students....recommended or expected? A7
Chromebooks for all students....recommended or expected? A7
Yes. Alos need tro align it with my family life
Your purpose and your intended outcome should be considered. However, sometimes we have to remember to have FUN(1/1)
Yes, do I say... But only if you want to do it, not because you have to!
A7: How hard do I push? How carefully do I tread? How many people will I upset/annoy/challenge?
I find a lot of teachers withhold that info. Every class is a "surprise party" with students not knowing what's next.
A7) Shall I go back to bed & sleep or start my day?
principal! We need good ones around!
Are the two honestly mutually exclusive? https://t.co/mr2mdjbSXX
A6: content over love of learning in the Junior School
Why is this even a question? ;)
A7 Go for it, can always say "sorry"!
Goodbye from Ireland. Thanks to all who engaged .We learn much from each other .Summer has finally arrived here
Tennessee is lovely! ๐
Not sure. I think it's something you have to realise with experience. Not a helpful answer
A5. No. In team situations, it can be more about encouraging another student by allowing them to take more control of choice.
I LOVE this idea!!! https://t.co/jgvvCSHGp2
I also choose to design a mobile school. One that perpetually traverses the globe
A6: STEM - are we really nailing it by integrating curriculum areas & rethinking school structure or just playing w bits & bots?
A7. Should I introduce Plickers into my Year 2 classroom to use as an assessment tool? Anybody using it?
1 hours only of Uni work, then bed
I don't think so. Adjust content to engaged pupils in discovery and foster a love of learning.
I think that the standardised testing phenomena is a battle that all Ts battle https://t.co/T28mCvqalz
A6 The end of year testing debacle is always a discussion point in TN.
recommended otherwise where did the choice go?
depends whatโs for breakfast? Bacon? Iโd go with neither.
The question "what are we doing today" is like "what are we having for diner" at home So annoying! https://t.co/XbRJ3cT2ks
I find a lot of teachers withhold that info. Every class is a "surprise party" with students not knowing what's next.
Likewise but as a dad! Not sure how much h/work benefits anyone significantly, longterm.
slow start on the couch with a favourite book or magazine
