Welcome to #TXed Chat! Tonight we continue our Summer Book Study with #ShakeUpLearning. Please take the next few minutes to introduce yourself and tell us where you are from.
After several back to school meetings today, I think this applies to all of our Edmentum partners getting ready to start the new school year! #txed#edtech
Q1: #ShakeUpLearning states that we need to move away from the industrial, one-size-fits-all, model of education. How can you start making this change in your position? #TXed
A1: I would be looking for ways I can move some of my mutliple choice assessments to more of an open assessment. Give Ss a chance to express themselves. #txed
#TXed A1 - Somehow we have to get away from one-size fits all and empower students to be the master of their education. Pondering how to make that happen is my moon-shot thought as I start year 28.

A1: Keep sharing your learning with each other...great lessons, great strategies, and great PD! We must make time to SHARE and collaborate each week! #TxEd
A1: There is a fine line with Ts that we need to be careful of. We want to push them to try new things, but we need to make sure we are not going too far too fast. #txed
Q2: Student voice/student choice helps empower students to take ownership of their learning. How are you/will you be providing choice to your students? #TXed
A1 Gone are the days of one size fits all, passive, sit and get the whole time. Learning is more active, individual yet collaborative, and engaging. #TxEd
A2: Choice boards, menus, tic-tac-toe boards....something of that nature is a great way to give some freedom while still supplying some guidance. It's a safety net. #txed

A2: Menus provide students with choice, especially with projects at @PollyRyonMS We also have mid day Exploratory enrichment classes where students choose class...robotics, cooking, yoga, fishing, aerospace, coding, etc #TXed
#TXed A2 - We discussed this topic today in training. It’s exciting to give students more choice in their learning but scary to give up control. Have to balance both sides. Start small, build relationship and embrace the chaos.

A2-We have to understand that not all children will be successful at certain task. But they can be successful at other things. Find their interest and go from there. #TXed
A2: I teach a programming class during the summer. It starts off a little rough but I front load much of the annoying/hard stuff so students get to have more fun after. #TXed
A3: This is where the menus/choice boards come into play. You are giving them some freedom but still guiding them in a certain direction. Options are great. Too many will drive them crazy too though. #txed
A3: I'm a big believer in collaboration wherever it can work. I've found even students who traditionally struggle can end up taking a lead sometimes. #TXed

You are right. My voice for choice boards is more to ease some of the worry some Ss have from not being able to decide which tool to use. It isn't about the tool...it's about the learning. We need to get them to that part. #txed
A3-This might be a good time to talk to them about a #growthmindset. The struggles can make us stronger. Keep on trying, guiding and encouraging them. #TXed
A3: Start Small. Too many choices can be cumbersome for grading on the teacher side...when you have. 160 kids. Also...setting up expectations in advance is key, s have to KNOW in advance what you are expecting so you can hold them accountable. #TXed
This is also where rubrics play a major role. If you have the correct rubric, then the tool should not matter as much. You can grade regardless of platform. #txed

Word on the street is that I have a group of teachers interested in doing a book study on #growthmindset. I remind you they are taking this task on their own. #TXed#NoPlaceLikeAlton
A4: This is another example of the importance of having Ss feel comfortable in your classroom. This can help inspire them to take more risks and try new things. #txed
A3: This is a tough one because we have done a great job in teaching our students to worry about getting the grade over learning to application and synthesis. It’s not about a grade. #TXed
Easy. Be “customized” thinking as opposed to standardized thinking. Share the benefits of giving kids exactly what they need as opposed to trying to make everyone fit in one size. #txed

That was our discussion today with instructional coaches after holding GPC’s. We have to help our teachers get kids to be on fire for learning. Light a fire in them rather than underneath them. #txed

A4: I feel as a leader I have to foster a safe place for my staff being curious...It becomes contagious! That’s how the magic red button happened in @MrFraserRMS classroom! Saw it at @ronclarkacademy...curiosity turned it into reality for his 6th graders. #TXed
Q5: When considering the 4 C's (Creativity, Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking), which do you feel is the most difficult to integrate into lessons? Why? #TXed

Build them up. Help them see the short and long term benefits of owning their learning. It’s a great big world out there and it’s theirs for the taking. The question is, will they be equipped to do so? We’ve got to help them see that! #txed

Keep sharing with them that mistakes are their best teachers. Embrace failing forward. And embrace dreaming. Now is the time to do so, when they get older, there less time for that. #txed
A5: I have to say Critical Thinking is most difficult. Ss have been trained to just get the right answer and not worry about the process. To me, critical thinking is where they are truly breaking something down to see how it works. That can be hard to teach. #txed
A5: (tuning in late here) I struggle with planning creativity throughout my lessons. Some projects really lend themselves to it, but on a daily basis I find it difficult. #TXed
RT CREEEDorg: Congratulations to SocorroISD for the great strides your students have made in their academic readiness this past year & the progress the district has made on the STAAR exams #txedhttps://t.co/9R5yCRxA7L
My opinion would be Crwativity. Simply because when you try to encourage it and give ideas to students, they usually mimic your ideas. Creating genuine opportunities for creativity may be difficult. You have to teach the process of being creative first. #txed

That's a good point too, Jaison. You can see the communication, collaboration, and creativity and assess a little easier. How do you assess their critical thinking? #txed

A6: I would like to make sure I am incorporating more of the communication and collaboration when working on research projects this year with some classes. I want them communicating with others outside our schools: professionals, experts, etc. #txed
A6: I want to model better by givingbetter feedback to create more reflection in walkthroughs and classroom visits. I hope to foster more conversations about growth of everyone. #TXed
