The #2PencilChat is a weekly conversation about educational technology. As we enter a more student-centered age, let's talk about using all the tools in our toolboxes to be innovative and dynamic teachers.
I’m a little fuzzy on how I first learned about Willie Mays, “The Say Hey (#2PencilChat ) Kid”.. Must have been watching Dodger baseball with my sister Stella (Mays played for the SF Giants). Anyway, I’m urbie, learning experience designer from Arizona.
It's a quiet night - we may be taking a couple of weeks off after this. It is after all, the only tolerable hours of sunlight lately. Everything else is so hot! #2PencilChat
A1: I am most likely to get behind at home. It will not effect other people that much if I do not clean some as often as I feel like I should. #2pencilchat
A1 For me, it was always grading papers and keeping up on laundry and the spare room that is a storage cave. I've gotten a lot better about prioritizing at work, so it's just home stuff. #2PencilChat
#2PencilChat A1 Home. My hobby/work has me out in the field a lot. Sometimes relationships can take a hit. My remedy is inviting Mrs to accompany me when possible. Fun times when she says yes.
A1: I fall behind with yardwork ALL THE TIME. It's my nemesis. Too many other great things to do. Kid's sports especially. #2pencilchat Sorry I'm late!
A1. HOME! HAHA! At school the curtain rises at 8:10am M-F and the show must go on....with some sleep! I save cleaning up the garage for breaks or summer! LOL #2PencilChat
Yes, folding clothes is the worst! I just gave up this year and started leaving them on top of the bed in our guest bedroom. Not the best strategy. #2PencilChat

A2 I'm usually to embarrassed, or at least I don't want to drag people down with something I did to myself... I should ask more, though, it's always so nice when someone who likes to organize comes in and makes me feel better.
#2PencilChat
A2) I always need to get better at asking for help. People are always generous and willing to help. Just need to not think of asking for help as a sign of weakness. #2PencilChat
#2PencilChat A2 In my day job, yes. I do okay asking for help and providing support. The broadcast video/webcast business can get pretty crazy. There’s a lot of variability one project to the next. We help each other.
Yeah, it's funny how much I love to help, I'd rather help you organize than organize myself. And yet, I hate to ask...the lesson here is pretty blatant. I think we all need to get over that fear... #2PencilChat
A2. I am not always the best at asking for help. I have gotten better, but I have improved even more in the department of always saying yes and shaving back what I may take on. #2PencilChat
A2: I try to get everything done by myself at school. I don't like to burden others with my issues. I do get my family to help at home. Loud music, sweeping and mopping goes together so well!#2PencilChat
A2: I’ve gotten better at delegating or asking for help. There’s no point trying to do everything on your own. You just wear yourself out. If you ask for help, it makes it easier for others to approach you for help, when they need it. #2PencilChat
Hi. I, late to the party, but that’s just because I didn’t know there was a party! But one of these questions came across my feed, so I’m jumping in! #2PencilChat
Hi Shauna! It's an education chat that covers the culture of education. Sometimes it's pedagogy, sometimes it's all about tools, sometimes it's educator self-care (like tonight!)

I’m not always the best. The older I get, the easier it is to ask for help. I don’t need to prove anything to anyone. If I want my Ss to be okay asking for help, then I should model that myself. #2PencilChat
#2PencilChat A2b I heard tell, a few #EdCamps ago, about pineapple boards. They tell other teachers what’s going on in your classroom. It’s for observation purposes. I suppose they could be useful to ask for help, too.
A2: I definitely rely on my husband, and occasionally I #phoneafriend to help me with a home project or I take before and after photos for my friends and post them in our messenger chat so that they can encourage me to keep at it. #2PencilChat
A3: Inbox Zero is a huge goal for me...Love the new snooze feature in Gmail, used to Boomerang those emails...Also love using checklist feature in @GoogleKeep or a checklist in my @getRocketbook#2pencilchat
A3: I usually wait until I know that I will be home one weekend and will not have as much to do and then get caught up on some of what I need to take care of. Also certain things get held off until summer or holidays. #2pencilchat
A3: I try to not have a backlog. I just get it done right then and there. Or, I’ll set a reminder on my phone. Backlog for me becomes a way to forget about something. #2PencilChat
A3: I jumped right into war (middle of the year) & had an amazing T partner. She kept me organized, like she wrote it all & had a list & errything (including kitchen sink)! She inspires me to do better next year. #2PencilChat
I'm always somewhere around inbox 7, which isn't too bad. Whenever I see someone who has hundreds or thousands, I'm stressed out for them. #2PencilChat

A3: I have to make lists, schedule on Google Calendar, and make sure I have a “catch up” weekend every once in awhile. I have the best intentions, but I’m a procrastinator. #2PencilChat
When I am faced with deadlines, I make a good old fashioned to-do list. When I’m unmotivated, I throw in mini goals and rewards. Finish report cards, buy a coffee. Make that phone call, then go home. #2PencilChat
A3. I ask "How important is this? Will the price of tea in China change or world come to an end if I don't do it? Most likely answer is-NO. So I take a breath and LET IT GO! #2PencilChat
A3 I make lists, but I hate them, so my lists have to be novel, silly, and fun because that keeps me from rebelling against them. Yes, I know how immature that sounds, but at least I know that about myself, so there's my process. #2PencilChat
Oh my gosh...I was thinking about moving so my dog could have more independent outdoor time, and then I thought of all the packing, and thought, "Oh, he gets plenty at Mom and Dad's!" #2PencilChat
A3: I have a hard time sticking to one best method or a time limit for keeping/throwing out items!I try to organize at the beginning or end of school year. 🤓#2PencilChat
#2PencilChat A3 & A4 There’s a tendency among humans I’ve noted over the years (I do it too sometimes) to try and do it all yourself. In the case of teachers, can some work be offloaded to students?
A4: Looking ahead. I'm lucky that our coor looks ahead & creates a monthly timeline for all teachers. She makes us fully aware of our responsibilities. It looks overwhelming, but it definitely helps me to just sit down & work. #2PencilChat
A4: When I get there by a miracle, I think of some other project for home or my classroom. It's a curse!!!! I just remind myself that all Geniuses go through this turmoil. Lol. #2PencilChat
a4 The satisfaction of having things feel right, and smooth, and easy keeps me on track until there's a big project, or a trip, or an event. That's what knocks me off track. I need to get to the part where I have a process for THAT.
#2PencilChat
A4: I like the feeling of being ahead, but I tend to find myself crawling back to my lazy ways. My work wife helps keep me in check, but she’s just as bad. #2PencilChat
A4: I love Google Calendar! I also send out an Instructional Coaching weekly calendar for Ts to sign up on if they need help. I use a google doc app that alerts me when someone has added info to it. 😀#2PencilChat
#2pencilChat A4: I stay late on Monday and get all of what I need for the week. On Friday I make sure I have what I need before I leave done and still try to get out on time. At home, I have specific days I have things scheduled.
A4: I try to check messages and emails daily. I have paperwork that I must do that is tied to Ts certification points #2PencilChat. I try and process that as quickly as I can. I find myself double checking things ALL of the time!
A5: Well, I commonly tell my students to get their lives together. I also help them to set goals for themselves and we talk about what they need to do to reach those goals. #2pencilchat
Much like inbox zero, I'm a big fan of totebag zero. Get what you can done at work on or nearly on work hours, and then live your life, and take care of yourself and your fam! #2PencilChat
A5: I try to hole them to a higher standard with being organized/timely. I’m on point with giving info to my kiddos and posting it everywhere (HW folders, Google Classroom, board). I give grace, but my dream is that they grow up to beat their teacher. :) #2PencilChat
A5 I like to give/model the tools that work for me, but it's important to recognize that what works for me doesn't always work for everyone else. #2PencilChat

A5: A checklist: It's difficult to keep up w/ what's missing so having this supports and keeps Ss organized. Also, we ask them what they need to prioritize & provide deadlines when these need to be submitted. Easier said than done, though. #2PencilChat
A5: At school, I get my stuff done, but at home, I can be quite the procrastinator. I tell my Ss that. When it is important, I make sure I get it done (IEPs, math videos, etc)#2PencilChat
#2pencilchat A5: "Mathacognition." Google-doc reflections w/Ss that help them identify and articulate what does work for them, what obstacles get in their way, and how they continue to grow a learners of math.....and of themselves.
#2PencilChat A5 Trust but verify President Reagan used to say. Maybe give students responsibility/authority to do stuff, trust them to do so, then follow-up. After a while they’d get it?
I think part of teaching Ss is showing them how & what to prioritize. Asking them, "Do you need to do this now or can it wait?" Too many times, Ts are focused on academics, but not the steps on becoming successful learners w/c many Ts take for granted. #2PencilChat
A5: I had my students fill out a daily agenda and maintain a class binder. It was the first thing they did upon entering class. Most graded work we did in class was placed in their binder. I hope this helped them develop good org skills. #2PencilChat
I can't tell you how many times a bag full of papers stayed on a chair all weekend, only to get carried back to school. We have to use smarter methods! #2PencilChat
