I love items! Those are one of my favs to come up with.
-
-
Hey! Glad to see you here tonight.
-
Hello everyone. Dave here. Teach 1-4 math and reading. Love the mechanic of Ss crafting items
-
Jeff from NS, Canada. I teach grade 5. Joining in for a bit!
-
Thanks. Participation spotty but will try to get in as much as I can.
-
YEAH!!! Super woman is here!
-
Big fan of items… There is so much you can do once you start building in some currencies to your game.
-
Yeah! Jeff made it this week!
-
A1: excited to see what ideas I can borrow (steal) from others!
-
A1: Feeling more confident with - Ss can't wait for the random events, more participation, increase in desire to do more
-
The leader of the adventure Quest is here, welcome back! I'm trying to catch up
-
Dave! So glad to have you back at you are a teacher leader in the world of the power of play!
-
A1: biggest fear = not providing feedback fast enough from updating xp, gold, or printing their items quickly so they don't lose int.
-
A1: afraid I didn't think through enough or will be smthng That falls by wayside.
-
A1: Sustainability - making sure I have enough new things to keep Ss engaged and wanting more
-
A1 trying to keep up with my ss! They keep asking what else they can earn. All I can say is you'll find out when u get there
-
That is what we are all here for!
-
A1: Ss feel more engaged and empowered.Finding an efficient way to give out badges and items
-
a1) worried that I'm going to overpower students, or make the leveling too easy. also not being able to create enough stuff.
-
3rd grade teacher Sioux Falls, SD. Would love to incorporate some games into classroom. Any elementary teachers on?
-
Awesome! Glad you are building in such an awesome tool with great success.
-
-
Thanks! Trying not to miss out this week - gotta keep the streak going ;)
-
2 Nova Scotians in the same chat! Should be a good one welcome!
-
A1: Building momentum in Masterchef. Excitement is building. Just hope I can keep up the excitement & keep game interesting.
-
Good goal, but I think most Ss will recognize that what you are providing is awesomeness. They will cut some slack
-
A1 I feel pretty good about mechanics :-) Just making time to keep going, and creating an in class habit and routine for usage
-
HS Bio and Health teacher from IN
-
a1) also that it falls completely flat on it's face when I try it, lol
-
You need to bring the game and the passion. The students have endless imagination… they will help construct a world with.
-
Oh okay! I knew I recognized your name. Good to hear from you! How's gamification going?
-
-
Great way to deal with this is by adding a twist… They get right back in faster then you could imagine. Play is powerful!
-
I was scarred of the same thing. I decided to just take the plunge.
-
Great to hear! It's a powerful tool.
-
ask a small group for ideas. Or add the ability to craft items. If they get approved they get some gold/free item.
-
-
I'll be going for it anyways, failure is a part of life, learn from it and make yourself better.
-
Anyone going to in Portland, OR? Heading there now.
-
Well said Play is so powerful fire keeping kids engaged!
-
A1 I have 5 preps, so putting together a long-term game seems daunting!
-
Adjust your game when it is in progress. Don’t worry to much. I make changes all the time. Be fair and they won’t care.
-
important to model this to Ss as well!
-
I made a change Monday and the Ss completely fed from it! https://t.co/VhSzS2AZYb
-
-
Adjust your game when it is in progress. Don’t worry to much. I make changes all the time. Be fair and they won’t care.
-
-
that's why I started small and am growing it as I go
-
<—— that is what I am talking about! Great job. Build it and they will come, Break it and it’s just part of the game!
-
A2: I think Theme helps develop the language for the conversations, badges and items. Ex. I have an MVF most valuable faction badge
-
A2: It drives what items/powers we create and use. Gives us a story line/theme to follow throughout the game
-
definitely modeling the life long learner each day with them and they love that i call them my beta testers.
-
We are all here for you. Together the community will build some rocking units and classes.
-
a2) helps with character development too. I've had students obsessed with aliens, so we're going to have that.
-
That is a great plan! I try to add pieces each week
-
A2: its the force behind all of my next moves and add ons.
-
yup! I just started with 1 of my preps too.
-
a2) and the types of side quests should follow the theme/over arching goal of the storyline.
-
-
One of the best ways to build. My first year my game was tiny by comparison to my game now.
-
That is cool that you add in SS interests into your story line. Great idea!
-
A2: helps character, curric, build creates excitement in class
-
As the main theme or just a fun drop in to the story. Could come with some crazy ideas!
-
that's what I'm hoping to do is add to it as I go and as the kids get more into it add more and more.
-
Great answer about the importance of Theme in your gamified course design. Way to be a leader! https://t.co/RsGVsfQskc
-
-
A2: its the force behind all of my next moves and add ons.
-
I agree, It also adds curiosity as well
-
A2: theme creates a story where the ideas start flowing and your story begins
-
A2: my excitement increases Ss excitement
-
not quite the main theme, but will play a significant role. idea- trying to communicate main learning objectives w/o words
-
-
A2:Theme is one of my favs. It creates the tapestry in which you will wrap all your students in. Helps drive all aspects of the game.
-
A2 specific themes can drive all aspects of game naming. I've been keeping my theme less specific. I need to be more specific!
-
-
probably some sort of conflict/battle as well. Maybe different alien races
-
doing a unit that looks like it will morph into multiple units. That's my goal but I don't have it planned out
-
Oh man, I am freaking out here. I can’t wait to chat with you! So much to talk about.
-
-
We battle mr. Freeze. They used vocab to build superheroes/villains using def as powers.
-
there are so many ideas you could dive into on this one. Alien tech, worm holes, space ships.
-
A3: I award XP when Ss complete quests that build 21st century skills, PDL skills and teambuilding challenges or mini games
-
that sounds like a lot of fun. What are some of the powers the villain has?
-
A3 Part 1: SS received points this week for passing all SEs (I use SBG) on their unit test.
-
A3: I give small amount of XP for completing routine tasks and larger amount for positive attitude, helping others, and going beyond.
-
probably be on a space ship at the beginning, then crash on planet. have to develop our tech and survive. no lights at beg
-
A3:Trying to figure out for effectiveness.
-
A3. The trickiest part is making XP more than just their scores on MC questions/quizzes/games.
-
Oh man! I so want to be in your science class. Talk with as she has some great science item ideas https://t.co/epE0NJpfwn
-
-
probably be on a space ship at the beginning, then crash on planet. have to develop our tech and survive. no lights at beg
-
a3) probably for completing work on time, side quests, maybe the weekly skill from the school
-
A3 P2: lower value of points was awarded when a S passed their retest. Win win Doubled the amount of Ss that usually retest.
-
A3. I frame my AP review after the Olympics and give them a "training plan" and then award points based on tasks they've done.
-
Yeah! Steph thanks for blogging about and joining our chat. Reviews, blogs and chats always helps spread the word.
-
Once you start, it is so addicting. I think about it all the time
-
we r studying WED, erosion would be a villain for ability to take from others https://t.co/LoR8CngDMm
-
-
that sounds like a lot of fun. What are some of the powers the villain has?
-
Awesome! Could you award some XP for some olympic events…. I am thinking minute to win it challenges?
-
Agreed! I added a side quest in last week for them to gain. https://t.co/4Pq3NW1UX3
-
-
A3. The trickiest part is making XP more than just their scores on MC questions/quizzes/games.
-
I hear you there! I wake up thinking about what to do next.
-
A3: Ss can earn team, individual, and bakery mission badges for varying levels of XP to reach 3 different levels at end of unit
-
That is a great idea, what are some of the tasks that they have to do?
-
Agreed with you both. My mind turns and I constantly think about how I could add to my game.
-
We do this actually on our Sunday night reviews! I also give out "medals" for 1st, 2nd & 3rd.
-
A3 cont. Individual badges are given for PDL
-
a3) might have skills that would award XP for completing certain things. i.e. radioactive = get 5 questions in a row right earn XP
-
For the past 8 weeks, mine has too!
-
Sidequests are a great way to push them outside the bounds of your course and help them learn beyond the silo.
-
-
Watch https://t.co/IdfLe2vZZh videos, read their review book, make a timeline... Shhh sometimes it's hard to truly track.
-
A3 I like side quests with bonus XP on related trivia and discovering items in class
-
-
Tell me about it. Like I said in the book, my “grading” of XP things is far quicker then assignments.
-
-
A3 cont. just launched Twitter adventure quest today!
-
that's a good idea too. I haven't really used it but you can load any YouTube video in, right?
-
Tell me more, tell me more
-
-
A4:Only way 2 beat the game is 4 their Faction collect as many XP as possible therefore they’re motivating eachother to do the quests
-
A4 we have a leaderboard on my website w/ individual player and class team xp. Ss go on and check throughout the day.
-
A4: give badges that they keep in baseball card sleeve ( idea). team badges help with teamwork https://t.co/dbpiTyQIDJ
-
A4: I inlcuded XP for Ss following the Social Contract and for 'checking' Ss that aren't to remind them.
-
A4: Just had a high XP day doing a simulation… Battle of Marathon. Students worked together. https://t.co/oVCSfSpIUL
-
a4) leaderboards, sticker badges they can put on their notebook/book cover
-
Much like adv quest. Post trivia ques at random times & Ss answer on google form with code.
-
Much like adv quest. Post trivia ques at random times & Ss answer on google form with code.
-
I have a leaderboard so Ss are always checking to make sure update. It's a win win
-
What do you do when your Ss do more "calling ppl out" for low effort vs truly motivating them?
-
-
A4 Tried Alliance level (class) raid; everyone complete specific quest to unlock a "Food Friday" - helped many, but fail in end :-(
-
Better late than never. Dock me -10HP if necessary. Melissa from Nebraska, 11-12 ELA
-
agreed! I have a big leaderboard as well. Students love it and check it all the time.
-
I made accountable talk bookmarks so that they use these to talk respectfully to eachother and set the expectations
-
a4) I might make a big printed leaderboard, tape the names in for each class.
-
Great idea! Don’t give up on this structure. Did you debrief with the students to strategize how to win next time.
-
and they come and tell me what class is in 1st between classes.
-
Glad that you made it, we missed you
-
-
A4: I screenshot the leaderboard and put it at the top of our class agendas. Then I point out lead changes or major jumps
-
A4 cont. Adding "Food Friday" reward card as individual, hoping to motivate fellow Ss. Its extrinsic, but hoping to light a fire
-
Make sure you tweet an image of that.
-
Important lesson in gamification - make friends with people who know spreadsheet magic :) https://t.co/45wpLziDje
-
-
and they come and tell me what class is in 1st between classes.
-
Missed you all, too! I was looking forward to this topic--will have to go back & read archives!
-
-
yes is a spread sheet magician.
-
That is real time feedback love this !
-
Leaderboards, while motivating for the best students, can be demotivating for those who need motivation most https://t.co/RJpIvMtIDI
-
A5: With , they get new armor, pets, & powers available.
-
A5: I have some desired items at high levels so that kids are motivated to level up because they want those items
-
now that you have that food Fri currency you could develop a house item that says 1 or 2 people don’t have to complete it
-
-
a5) higher level items, maybe they get to have a snack during class
-
A5: next year my items will have specific levels attached so they can't jump straight to mythic weapons :p
-
or maybe the leading guild gets to have a snack.
-
Great Idea! https://t.co/2YiMdLKcTt
-
-
A4: I screenshot the leaderboard and put it at the top of our class agendas. Then I point out lead changes or major jumps
-
Thanks! I think it is worth it. It took about 1000 hours of development. It has tons of features. https://t.co/UsQ9hcl8zR
-
A5: I have 3 levels to achieve in each unit w/ diff privileges. Ultimate level Masterchef achieves mastery on unit summative
-
Call me a nerd but I think Spreadsheets are cool!
-
Yes, I will use this tomorrow
-
I think it is all about your class and game culture you setup. I have had some students use them for micro goal setting.
-
hey I totally get it! There are so many cool things you can do with spreadsheets.
-
A5: Using the levels already built into
-
Inferno Ss have been warned about Thurs' class but don't know about our Limbo contest on Fri! https://t.co/8gOKWpVgVR
-
I do that. This year I added some really high level items! Kids are drooling over the idea of them.
-
built this one in and a student earned that power. It was like they had won the lottery.
-
-
Agreed. I have some Ss very motivated by it, some aren't. Important to accept not all Ss may be motivated by it
-
my sheet shows major jumps and changes over time as well. Great to have micro leaderboards to help Ss see growth.
-
-
My 8th graders don't get to have snacks, and I hear about it everyday. They'd push mom down stairs to get this!
-
Thanks much… by the shoutout. It has so much to help develop your own game & get it off the ground. https://t.co/txJHS7dGnc
-
I use spreadsheet and have also tried which had some amazing scripts for item shop.
-
A6 Using a shared Google spreadsheet for our Inferno leaderboard. Nice to separate scoreboard from gradebook
-
A6: fairly new and still exploring the world of , i'm using the the tools has built in to their system.
-
A6: I love but have played with the Matera sheet & sheet. All of them are great!
-
Once again, Brian has done it. He takes a lesson adds elements of & makes sure kids Awesome! https://t.co/ZyXxbNX90x
-
-
Inferno Ss have been warned about Thurs' class but don't know about our Limbo contest on Fri! https://t.co/8gOKWpVgVR
-
a6) haven't decided between classcraft or excel/google spreadsheet. Will probably depend on students tech at home
-
A6: gamification database on https://t.co/XJLKHbxaZM ! It will save you so much time and it will blow your mind! Genius!
-
A5: add powers or ammo or skins per level
-
-
Couldn’t agree more… Students like that they are free to play with out worry of the grade. https://t.co/KYVyrA57qF
-
-
A6 Using a shared Google spreadsheet for our Inferno leaderboard. Nice to separate scoreboard from gradebook
-
Using Google Sheets as my leaderboard. 's is awesome though! I have seen it
-
Always have fun in classes, but I am personally enjoying the planning challenges of Adding new element to my course!
-
a7) I'm thinking year long board, and quarter boards. Individual prizes for each
-
A7: Throw in Easter eggs or hidden quests hidden around school.
-
I love the idea of playful planning that is discussed in the book. Glad you enjoy it too.
-
A7:Having mini games built in & simulations I also tell Ss that inorder to do this quest u must choose Ss that are at levels 3, 9,15
-
A7: Keeping it fresh goes beyond game. It's keeping class & lessons fresh. New games, new activities.
-
A7: side quests, unrelated topic fun learning, changing things up on them every so often……
-
-
2 minutes until with Join in and look inside the random thoughts in her brain...SCARY!! 8CST
-
A7: give incentive at end of unit for highest scoring teams & indiv. XP builds but Ss turn in badges at end of unit & start over.
-
a7 maybe have a omputer crash that resets the lleaderbboard
