#HipHopEd Chat is a weekly cyber cypher (chat) where stakeholders within Hip-Hop and Education come together to discuss issues that impact the youth and adults within our local, national and global communities. #HipHopEd Chat is a virtual form of professional development for Educators, workshop for Parents and other Adults and a brainstorming session of Hip-Hop practitioners. Our #HipHopEd chats are every Tuesday from 9-10 EST. on Twitter.
Welcome 2 #HipHopEd tonight we are discussing how we as educators can build up our abilities to exhibit and model 21st Century Learning skills to enhance our craft
#HipHopEd We often focus on the need to develop and enhance Creativity, Collaboration, Critical Thinking and Communication #21stCent4Cs in or students but what about developing them ourselves within our profession
a lot i appreciate about this.
1. shows students aren't necessarily impressed by teachers using raps to get them to open their math books.
2. the student gets the mic!
‘Chicago’s rapping teacher Dwayne Reed drops "My Teacher Loves Me"' https://t.co/VTGn43FKdR#HipHopEd

Agreed. I used to say, “Don’t fail Physics for the same reason 50 cent did ... He forgot his G-G-G-G-G-G- G-Units.”
But now none of the Ss know who 50 even is.
Guess I better find a pun involving Migos or Chance
#hiphoped
Whatcya think @TheJLV ?
How Effective am I at communicating, collaborating, critically thinking & being creative....? This is the first question a #HipHopEd(ucator) must ask themselves ....If You can't Live it you can't teach it! #21stCent4Cs
THAT is one chewy question! Developing self-awareness definitely involves evaluating ourselves. I know there are some wise answers out there, following so I can learn! #HipHopEd
Stay up to date on the latest technological advances for classroom use & attend Professional Development conferences. I attend the @TheSCEA annual Spring & Fall Conferences. I attended the annual At Risk and Struggling Students Conference in Atlanta to see @chrisemdin#HipHopEd
When I talk about using hip-hop in math, I often get the question of whether or not I rap, and I explain that I am utilizing hip-hop culture beyond just rapping for students. #HipHopEd
Teacher ed programs can have a tremendous role in promoting #21stCent4Cs These are just as important for methods courses as focusing on disciplinary learning #HipHopEd
If you are a seasoned educator you should look to collaborate with a new teacher the way an established artist will collaborate with a new artist #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd faculty @NazPrep model our 21st C mindsets we seek to build in Ss by being growth-focused learners and leaders. (Pics of them doing an activity about #HipHopEd a few weeks ago)
We have to let students drive the instruction. They generate the questions, we steer them a little to stay on topic. Students will give us the insights into their 21st century skill set if empower them as such. #hiphoped

I’m ready for the day when people who think they run this system will be held accountable for implementing policies that perpetuate these cycles of “education” #HipHopEd
Word. Much the best and the emcee - listening and immersing yourself in the vibe of the beat (the rhythm of the students and their voice) one can start the journey towards effective “sender” #hiphoped
Think the “us teaching content thing” is a wash. Content is everywhere. We have to teach our students ways of thinking inside, outside, above, beneath and around ‘the box’ and pathways to activate revolution, organization streams and activism. #HipHopEd

Critical Thinking is essential to deal with the inherent challenges of being an educator in an ever changing world inside of school that isn’t designed to change #HipHopEd
YES. I need to give a shout out to Miami University’s Urban TeachingCohort. I wouldn’t be the educator nor person I am today if it weren’t for this family. #HipHopEd
I find that I communicate with young people more effectively than I communicate w/ my colleagues. I think it important to do both, to educate students but also to educate others on the work we do and why it is critical that we consider changing our classroom paradigm #HipHopEd
This comes when you create the space for content knowledge to be validated beyond the prescribed text of a particular subject. Also create spaces for co-teaching and co-learning #HipHopEd
Skillsets are always changing but if we can teach critical thinking and problem solving our Ss can grow and expand with changing skillsets like how @JoeBudden went from mc to podcast mogul by adapting to the game #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd Hey fam...caught up in the Atlanta Dream - Washington Mystics game 5 playoff...Gotta watch my grandbaby! Will join in if it ends before the hour!
I pretty much live inside the college and career readiness components on CCSS with teachers daily. Take a look at em, recently? IF that’s our barometer for measured effectiveness of our teaching, we. Ain’t. There. #HipHopEd
Ss gravitate toward lessons that expose new avenues of thought. My Ss are floored when shown social inequities that work within our curriculum. Developing lessons that tap into that enthusiasm is infectious. #hiphoped
#HipHopEd Hey fam...caught up in the Atlanta Dream - Washington Mystics game 5 playoff...Gotta watch my grandbaby! Will join in if it ends before the hour!
Good place to look is at the Reggio Emilia Approach and @Reggiochildren. I went there last May. The approach is centered around student interests #HipHopEd

We recorded this live mixtape last month called "Ready P.Eddie vs. The Universe Vol. 1 on SoundCloud #HipHopEd it's a collaborative project with several different Birmingham artist that often collaborate on projects in & out of music. https://t.co/bH3iBm3RZ0
For our students to be ‘College and Career Ready truly means analysis and synthesis on multiple levels. Transference of a skill-strategy into the doing, creating and producing spaces across ‘content’ #HipHopEd
I am so saddened yet so encouraged when I ask questions such as this in my high school classroom. Attempting to get 10th/11th grade students to see that they ARE somebody instead of “I want to be somebody when I grow up” is the most stressful but beautiful thing #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd We often focus on the need to develop and enhance Creativity, Collaboration, Critical Thinking and Communication #21stCent4Cs in or students but what about developing them ourselves within our profession
Listen to music with your students and communicate what you hear and your impressions and then listen to your students do the same and you will have created a communication cycle aka a cypher #HipHopEd
I like the question of "What problems do you want to solve, now?" I am going to steal that & push my students to think about what mathematics do they need to know to help them solve that problem. It's about time to change how students perceive the power pf mathematics. #HipHopEd
Listen to music with your students and communicate what you hear and your impressions and then listen to your students do the same and you will have created a communication cycle aka a cypher #HipHopEd
Critical Thinking along with Communication Skills, Creativity, the willingness to Collaborate and finally the intellectual Curiosity to find out who you are; what you want to do and how to maximize that person's potential. #HipHopEd
Absolutely! I wish I had math teachers, in high school, who could connect the content with what was interesting to me (I.e. Sports). Especially, with the rise of advanced analytics in athletics. #hiphoped
Hero mode: Let them pick. God mode: Let then pick and play uncensored versions. Immortal mode: All of the above and you close your mouth and let students lead the discussions, acting as facilitator only when absolutely necessary.
When I was in a classroom and still now with my teachers, we use text, narratives, research (scholarship) music etc to spark and trigger critical, literal and figurative thinking. Analysis is key. Synthesis is major. #HipHopEd
A marker of the 21st century is rapid and consistent technological advancement. No one is more privy to these innovations than the young people in our classrooms. Partner with them, let them show you what you don’t know, and then work together to create change #HipHopEd
Critical Thinking along with Communication Skills, Creativity, the willingness to Collaborate and finally the intellectual Curiosity to find out who you are; what you want to do and how to maximize that person's potential. #HipHopEd
Hip hop has & will always be about owning the means of production & the Masters. We must educate for agency not subservience. #21stcenturyskills#HipHopEd
Always liked that meme about (Ts) being outsourced by YouTube IF all you’re doing is Still standing in a room lecturing, talking and boring students to death. Students can get content annnnnywhere. It’s even in their pockets!!! #HipHopEd
Have them draw a picture of a mathematician, with no other instructions given, to gain an understanding of how Ss see themselves & others in the world. Typically, my Ss draw old guys w/ beards & glasses & discuss. Great to look for implicit gender, age, or racial bias. #HipHopEd

If you don't innovate and adapt, the game will pass you by. #21stCent4Cs help students and professionals drive the change instead of reacting to it #hiphoped
Hey #HipHopEd fam! This is a collab I am working with a local artist. We are shooting the video with students in my school in a little over a week. Working to make it available for #antibullying week in October. Please share & any little bit helps! #WalkingTall

Relevance is also vitally important. If students don’t see themselves in what you’re teaching and can’t map the journey from classroom lessons to who and where they’re going in life, just sit down. #HipHopEd
This is my favorite, and has resulted in some of the most inspiring conversations I’ve ever heard, and usually I don’t even play an active role. Students want nothing more than for their voice to be heard without a teacher trying to fine tune what they’re saying. #HipHopEd
Listen to music with your students and communicate what you hear and your impressions and then listen to your students do the same and you will have created a communication cycle aka a cypher #HipHopEd
I currently work in a position that didn't exist 4 years ago, let alone 15. I know folks who are being offered the opportunity to create their positions. This is why we need #21stCent4Cs#hiphopEd

A way to disrupt the model that has black and brown students wanting to earn primarily so they can be consumers...a victory in this Capitalist system that has oppressed and sacrificed too much (in the name of financial gain) for far too long. #hiphoped
Understand “how to be culturally relevant” because they’ve participated in the culture and understand it’s transformative power on a firsthand basis #HipHopEd#IfYouDontKnowNowYouKnow
Students need to be brought in on the planning process for classroom work if we want to most effectively reach them, and they love the responsibility of being brought in that process. #HipHopEd
Providing space for others to be truly heard requires one to listen to the speaker and oneself simultaneously. It means "hearing" one's visceral responses to what is being said and separating them from the speaker's intent to truly hear the speaker's words #HipHopEd
This is a great idea! My teaching science professor had us do this but with what we do we think of when we hear the word Scientist. We discussed the biases and stereotypes we all had about scientists and science #HipHopEd

One of the scariest things as a new teacher is trying to "justify" what I am doing to an administrator who doesn't understand the importance of #HipHopEd...it's hard work, but critical work.
#Facts but the mission of #HipHopEd calls us to step outside the comfort of our youth to confer, convert, collaborate and confront those we need/deny this #Medicine
If there is anything I could say about us finding da strength hip hop could have 4 our (be it underserved or privileged) 4 crit thinking, please read the "Cultural Appropriation" chapter in @IjeomaOluo 's "So U Wanna Talk About Race" WE COULD TALK fo HRS FAM! #hiphoped
Teaching is an art form so if we only hold the position because we have information then we can and should be easily replaced. The ability to connect with your students is the art form #HipHopEd
Allow student voice to not only be heard by Ts and Admins, but to drive school policy and peer-to-peer collaboration, particularly around equity. SO to Madison East justice league... #hiphoped
In Decoded Jay-Z talks about how his notebook looked like jibberish to anyone but him. He could see the flow in a way nobody else could. This is #21stcskills wisdom #HipHopEd
You know I fundamentally agree, however, good pre-K and K teachers been doing the circle thing probably before the hiphop cipher came to be, I say this on the day my son started Kindergarten! They rock out that cipher, not quite the same, but it's the foundation. #hiphoped
Teaching is an art form so if we only hold the position because we have information then we can and should be easily replaced. The ability to connect with your students is the art form #HipHopEd
It's hard stepping back into a school where admin wants everyone on the same page but colleagues want to keep teaching to the test instead of teaching math. I speak out in PLCs, but ultimately I just have to step in my classroom & do what I do despite what others think #HipHopEd
Yes that’s why we focus on PBL at our school... Ss dive into some problem they want to solve based on PBL essential Q... and standards are woven into a matrix of possibilities #HipHopEd
Learning has to be a conversation. We cannot possibly have that if we are merely waiting for listeners. It is possible to be responsive to students by asking them what they want to know, how they want to learn it, then creating optimal conditions for that. #hiphoped
Definitely have had this issue before. If they don’t see your vision, it’s hard to get people on bored. One thing I’ve found is it’s hard to argue with the results! #HipHopEd
Yes that’s why we focus on PBL at our school... Ss dive into some problem they want to solve based on PBL essential Q... and standards are woven into a matrix of possibilities #HipHopEd
If we are building spaces & opportunities to educate, agitate & organize, the requisite collaborative skills become sought after internally. That’s hip hop 2 the core. #HipHopEd
The more our Ss understand that there is a process behind every project that reaches their ear the more we can focus on mastering the process so we can control the product #hiphoped
Yes! Too often schools make decisions about students and communities without them. They have been demanding change for decades. It's up to us to invite them to the table or they end up on the menu. #HipHopEd
Critical thinking is not the indoctrination to the systems that oppress, it is the notion of sparking the mind that will challenge and change the systems #HipHopEd
The work of us all is to evict white supremacy from our consciousness. It ain’t 21st century learning unless we are constantly working to dismantle centuries of ritualized humiliation of children in schools #HipHopEd@chrisemdin ✊🏽
I used “They School” by Dead Prez w/ my juniors during the 1st week of school this year. I had an 18 yr old student tell me in response to a question I had asked, “Hold on I gotta look back at the lyrics.” He then realized what he said and told me.... #HipHopEd

Yeah but fam the cypher is rooted in African drum circles which far predate traditional education systems. Colonial and imperial movements just denounced that knowledge and then co-opted them in schools. #HipHopEd
What are we building with? Some of the necessary ingredients rely on what gifts we are ready to accept from students. Whom have much to teach us in what is relevant, and what sustains them. #CogenerativeDialogues#PedagogyofTrust#HipHopEd

Hip hop elements/pillars & pedagogy are both called “Crafts” for a reason. It’s never done. The 4Cs require a constant state of becoming. Always forward. #HipHopEd
the mind is in the whole body, the emotion is lived through the body, then because in more than 90% of the classes they give us content on a blackboard? #hiphoped#hiphopedchile
The majority of the jobs in our region are in the tech or health sector... we have 100+ intern partners that tell us they can teach them the content or specific job skills. They want Ss who are innovators and creators/critical thinkers.. aka MCs! #HipHopEd

because if the learning that can be verbalized depends on pleasurable experiences, even some teachers continue to do the same? , with the word most used in the classroom, do you know what it is? #hiphoped#hiphopedchile@chrisemdin
Welcome 2 #HipHopEd and please use the hash tag in your tweets. You are absolutely right and sometimes you get silence because they have to figure it out on the way home
If your communication illicits a bunch of praise, then you might have done a good job telling the audience what they wanted to hear. If your piece illicits productive questioning and subsequent dialogue, then you’ve done an amazing job.
I agree! I also think if we ask students how they view the use of mathematics in their communities, I would imagine they may have a hard time seeing the mathematical connections. I want students to see the mathematical beauty in their own communities. #HipHopEd

Beware vulture capitalism disguising itself as “entrepreneurship” devoid of community or common uplift. Hip hop’s history with corporate entities is a testament to this. #HipHopEd
Showcasing your ability to freestyle as a teacher in front of your class communicates to your students that the classroom is a space that acknowledges vulnerability as a precursor to academic, social, and emotional success #hiphoped#ItsOkToNotKnow
Which is something that involves a lot of work and studying on the part of the teacher. It can be such a cool special experience when you let the kids teach you about what they know and you might not. #HipHopEd

via @chrisemdin For the record, our use of 21st century skills as a frame simply uses edu-speak to support what we've BEEN doing as #HipHopEd(ucators) #hiphopedchile
Understanding that when it comes to teaching students believe us ineffective -change can't wait- . We must practice praxis and reflectivity. And we must adjust and create ways to remix the classroom. #HipHopEd
Daayyyam... I once did a remake of Common's "The Light" to describe the cardiovascular and digestive system in Grade 5 Science... Won't lie, it was not a freestyle though :) #hiphoped
Do you mean freestyle as in rap or freestyle as in be willing to speak off of the curriculum and take the tasks of the class one step at a time? #HipHopEd
We have to resist insisting students prove learning the way we did--with a question/answer model that basically communicates, "How well can you show me you've learned what I told you to in the way I want you to." #HipHopEd
My students love coming to my class because they enjoy the vibe. I've got lamps & LED string lights versus using the florescent lighting & music is going as they walk in the room! #HipHopEd
the word most used is the word, NO, but what happens when I ask you, do not imagine a blue lake?, the word lexeme, no, it has no image, so when you say do not stop, guess what happens. the instruction has the opposite effect ... #hiphoped#hiphopedchile
But if those policies and beliefs that we are mandated to trickle down into our classrooms (i.e. curriculum, or strips to it) don't truly support and ignite our students, it's our job to #riseup & provide our students what they need #hiphoped#Ontario

I sadly can’t freestyle...I am in awe of folks that can like @tdj6899 our Ss love when he does this when he’s on campus facilitating Lyrics and Scripture #HipHopEd
Yes! And yo by freestyle I mean literally rhyme, but also as a pedagogical framework. Respond to words, feelings, and objects in the room as you teach. Drop your lesson plan if something more salient/meaningful content or emotions emerge #HipHopEd
As educators, I hope we are all immersed in your local art/hip-hop scene. There you find unfiltered creative development and can be possible bridges to a larger learning cypher for our students. #hiphoped

We owe to ourselves to ensure that we are being our best creative and communicative selves in our classrooms. We benefit as well as our students. #HipHopEd
And that requires trust...trust that you're more than enough; your students are more than enough; and the space you created in your learning community is more than enough. #HipHopEd
